The Lagos State Government has arrested 100 suspected members of the dreaded cult group, Badoo, who have been terrorising residents of the state, especially in the Ikorodu axis.

The state government also cautioned residents to desist from carrying out jungle justice on suspected members of the gang, as the government would leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators of any dastardly act to justice.

For some time now, members of the Badoo cult group have been fingered in violent killings in Ikorodu axis, a development which had prompted some suspected members of the group to be lynched through mob action.

The 100 suspects were arrested in a joint operation carried out by men of the Lagos State Police Command, Rapid Response Squad, Odua People’s Congress, as well as local vigilantes, including Onyabo, in Ikorodu on Saturday.

As at Sunday morning, the number of arrested suspects had risen to 100.

The team, in the operation which started early in the morning of Saturday, moved around Ikorodu and combed the suspected hideouts of the members of the gang from street to street.

The combined security team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Lagos Police Command, Mr. Imohimi Edgal and the RRS Commander, ACP Olatunji Disu, specifically combed black spots and suspected areas like Ikorodu, Ibeshe, Ita Maja, Ijede, Ipakodo and other areas, arresting about 100 suspects for questioning.

The exercise was a follow-up to a meeting which the National Coordinator of Odua Peoples’ Congress, Chief Gani Adams and Onyabo leaders held with security chiefs in the state on Friday.

Confirming the operation, Public Relation Officer of Lagos State Police Command, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said about 40 police and RRS vehicles were used for the operation; adding that the exercise was a part of the ongoing efforts to rid the state of the activities of the reprehensible cult group.

He said: “We can confirm the arrest of 100 suspected members of the dreaded cult group, Badoo; and they are helping with ongoing investigation into the activities of the gang.

“Government is on top of the situation and we will like to use this medium to urge the people to desist from jungle justice.

“We would also like to assure residents that they are free to go about their normal activities without let or hindrance, as the police and other security agencies in the state are poised to make the state uncomfortable and hot for criminal elements,” Famous-Cole said.

Sequel to the incessant attacks on innocent lives by members of deadly criminal gang in Ikorodu, Lagos State, popularly known as “Badoo,” Police officers, in conjunction with members of Odua Peoples Congress, (OPC) on Saturday raided the different hideouts of the gang arresting over 100 suspected members.

The raid according to inside sources was a follow up to series of meetings the police authority had with different local vigilante in the area.

Members of OPC and other vigilante groups who were conversant with the terrain had led heavily harmed police officers to some locations suspected to be the den of the group, where over 100 of them were rounded up.

It was gathered that the unabated activities of the cult group had compelled the Lagos State Police authority to approach members of the Odua People’s Congress (OPC), led by its leader, Otunba Gani Adams last week, for possible collaboration and assistance.

The serial attacks by those boys in Ikorodu are becoming a thing of worry for the police in the state; the police considered it imperative and expedient to seek for partnership of vigilante groups in Ikorodu, led by the OPC.

Sincerely, the activities of those Badoo boys must be stopped; this massacre must not be allowed to go on unabated; it is seriously threatening the serenity of that town,” the source had disclosed.

  • Stop abetting criminals, Police warn monarchs in Ikorodu

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Fatai Owoseni, has warned traditional rulers in Ikorodu area against harbouring criminals who were unleashing terror on their subjects.

Owoseni gave the warning on Sunday during an interactive meeting with traditional rulers in Ikorodu over the incessant violent crimes by suspected militants in the area.

The police boss expressed sadness over incessant kidnapping, pipeline vandalism, robbery, cultism and killings of innocent persons in the area.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that four police men, an army captain and a civilian were on killed by suspected militants in Isawo area of Ikorodu on April 9.

Owoseni told the royal fathers that the police would no longer tolerate people being killed and maimed under the watchful eyes of traditional rulers.

He urged the traditional rulers to join hands with the police so that hoodlums would have no place to hide or operate in their domains.

Owoseni accused some chiefs in the area of collaborating with criminals to unleash terror on residents.

There are Baales (village heads) that are informants and sponsors of criminals in this area.

They allowed militants to build houses harbouring criminals in the creeks.

I want the royal fathers to call their chiefs to order.

This meeting is convened to tell them that we will no longer tolerate silent conspiracy.

Traditional rulers cannot tell me they don’t know who is who in their domain; all communities are advised to organise their local vigilantes,’’ Owoseni said.

According to him, most kidnappings, killings and other violent crimes in Lagos State takes place in Ikorodu area and urged community to be part of the security management.

In the community, there are hunters and farmers; they can’t say they don’t know criminals in their communities.

There is conspiracy of silence on criminal activities and this conspiracy must stop.

Traditional rulers and religious leaders must unmask the criminals in their communities.

We have begun operations at Isawo; we need intelligence reports from the traditional rulers.

Killing for rituals must stop and with your support, we can stop those killings.

Let us take ownership of our areas and expose the hoodlums amongst you.

Some of the Baales and chiefs supply foods to these militants; many of them are spies to these vandals and militants,’’ said the police commissioner.

Responding, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Adewale Shotobi, assured that the traditional institution would partner with security operatives in curbing crimes in the area.

Shotobi said that the royal fathers were investigating the recent killings and other crimes in Ikorodu area so as to expose the hoodlums.

Also speaking, Oba Ajibade Agoro of Imota, noted that increasing crime in the area was due to massive urban-rural migration.

No traditional ruler would be happy for his community to be known for criminality during his reign.

Cultism is our problem in Imota. Few days ago, someone was shot while another person was also shot yesterday.

Our challenge is that when we give information and the police arrest these criminals, after few weeks, the suspects are released,’’ Agoro said.

  • Mawere creeks in Ikorodu, major hide-out for militants, says community leader

Some community leaders of Isawo in Ikorodu area of Lagos have urged government to clear the creeks, saying that this would check kidnappings and other violent crimes in the area.
The residents of the creeks, bordering Lagos and Ogun States, told NAN on Sunday that criminals were using the areas as hideouts and operational bases.
Two suspects arrested in connection with the kidnapping of eight students and staff at Nigerian-Turkish International College in Ogun confessed to using the Mawere creeks for their operations.
According to Chief Musediku Ibrahim-Ayinla, the Baale of Oke-Oko Isawo near Ikorodu, many of the kidnappers operating in Lagos and Ogun were hiding in Mawere creeks.
“They were involved in NNPC pipeline vandalism before the military forced them out of Isawo in Ikorodu.

“Since they do not have access to pipelines any longer, they resorted to kidnapping people and moved to Mawere creeks in Ogun; from that creek, they can operate anywhere.
“The main threat to Lagos State and Ogun is Mawere creeks; that is where the militants are hiding now.
“And if government want to check kidnappings and robberies, all the creeks in the area should be cleared,” the community leader told NAN.
He commended the joint military task force for flushing out militants from Isawo area of Ikorodu, noting that there had been no sporadic gunshot since the military kept vigil of the area.
He also urged the Lagos State Government to fulfil its promise to construct a new road to link Isawo with Lagos – Ibadan Expressway to open up and bring development to the area.
Also, a community leader in Mawere, Oke-Oko in Ogun, Chief Taiwo Adisa, corroborated Ibrahim-Ayinla’s position, urging government to clear the creeks harbouring criminals in the area.
The chairman of commercial motorcycle operators in Isawo, Mr. Fatai Azeez, said violent crimes had reduced drastically in the areas cleared by the Lagos State Government last year.
“One thing the government must do to ensure safety of Ikorodu area is to clear all the creeks housing the militants.
“There is no more pipeline vandalism in the area that was cleared last year; more areas need to be cleared,”Azeez said.
NAN reports that more than 50 people lost lives during clashes between the militants and residents of Isawo near Ikorodu last year, leading to the deployment of troops to the area.
NAN also reports that some parts of the creeks leading to Arepo in Ogun, notorious for pipeline vandalism, were cleared by the state government last year.
