    Kwara govt. re-opens College of Education, Ilorin

    Kwara Government has ordered the immediate resumption of academic activities at the state College of Education in Ilorin.

    This directive is contained in a statement issued by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Tertiary Education, Monsurat Amuda-Kannike, in Ilorin on Sunday.

    Amuda-Kannike quoted the Commissioner in the ministry, Dr Alabi Abolore as saying that Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq gave the directive, following interventions by some relevant stakeholders on the need to find lasting solutions to the crisis in the institution.

    Newsmen recalls that the state government had, on Oct. 19, shut the college, following the violent protest embarked upon by the students.

    The commissioner said that government had to close the institution to forestall possible degeneration of the crisis within the college community.

    Abolore said it took the ministry series of engagements with the college management and the leadership of the Joint Academic Staff Union in Tertiary Institutions (JASUTI), both of which pleaded for return to normalcy.

    ”Committee of Unions in Tertiary Institutions (CUTI) in the institution and other important stakeholders also intervened.

    ”Another takeaway from those meetings was the promise from the attendants never to allow anything that could threaten public peace and impede academic session in that citadel of learning happen again,” he said.

    The statement added that the latest decision by government was to enable the college to continue with the examination that was put on hold, following the shutdown.

    It, however, called on the school management to justify the confidence reposed in it by ensuring that the institution met the yearning of students vis-a-vis the service delivery.

    Snapchat teenage porn actress jailed for cybercrime in Ilorin

    The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday secured the conviction of one Daniel James, a Black American female on Snapchat over internet related fraud.

    James was charged along side one Atadoga Samuel for same offence.

    In his judgment, Justice Mohammed Sani, sentenced James to eight months imprisonment with option of fine of N200,000.

    The judge ordered that one Techno Phone used to perpetrate the crime and $150 USD which he collected from the unlawful activities be forfeited to the Federal Government.

    On the other hand, the judge sentenced Samuel to six months imprisonment with option of fine of N200,000.

    The court ordered that one Gionee S10 Phone recovered from defendant at the point of arrest and $25 US Dollars that he benefited from the unlawful activities be also forfeited to the federal government.

    The convicts, who were prosecuted separately on one count charge, pleaded guilty to their respective charges.

    Earlier, Counsel to the EFCC, Rashidat Alao, told the court how credible intelligence led to the arrest of the defendants at Dekina and Olamaboro Local Government Areas of the Kogi.

    She tendered the extra-judicial statements of the defendants, mobile phones and several fraudulent messages printed from their devices, which were admitted in evidence.

    She said that James fraudulently collected $150 dollars from one Karma Jones on March 25 via your Snap Chat application linked email-karmaardee193@gmail.com.

    While Samuel fraudulently collected $25 dollars sometimes in May from Alaina Hicks via your Snap Chat application linked to an email address bighoney2033@gmail.com

    Thereafter, Alao urged the court to convict the defendants based on their admittance of guilt.

    UNILORIN Pro-chancellor, Yazid Rafindadi is dead

    The Chairman and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Malam Habidu Yazid-Rafindadi is dead.

    The demise of the Pro-Chancellor was confirmed on Thursday by Mr Kunle Akogun, the Director of Corporate Affairs of the university.

    The director said that Rafindadi died in Abuja, but however, said that the university had yet to give an official statement on his death.

    Rafindadi, who hailed from Katsina State, was a former Secretary to the Government and Head of Service in the old Kaduna State.

    The deceased was appointed chairman of the Governing Board and Pro-Chancellor of the University in 2021.

    Cultists in Okesuna/Ojagboro area of Ilorin, Kwara state have renewed their rivalry as one person is reportedly dead on Sunday night.

    The victim who was identified Tantala, was caught up and murdered in the clash between rival cult groups in the state.

    The bloody clash, according to eyewitness accounts, started around 11:00pm when the rival cult group hacked down and killed the victim, also suspected to be a member of a cult group.

    SP Okasanmi Ajayi, Kwara state police Public Unit confirmed clash between cult groups in Ilorin on Sunday, saying the police is now on top of the situation.

    Okasanmi said, “the information is true and the Commissioner of Police, Tuesday Assayomo, has ordered an investigation into the incident.”

    AL-HIKMAH University gets 100% NUC accreditation for all undergraduate programs

    The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved full accreditation for all academic programmes offered at the first Islamic faith-based AL-HIKMAH University, Ilorin.

    The Vice-Chancellor of the university Noah Yusuf, a professor, made this known while speaking with newsmen in his office on Monday.

    The VC said the approval was sequel to the accreditation conducted by the NUC in January, involving eleven academic programmes spread across the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences as well as Education.

    Elated Yusuf revealed that virtually all the undergraduate programmes in the various departments have secured full accreditation for five years, from 2021 – 2026 while thanking the stakeholder public of the varsity for the roles tehy played.

    His words: “While thanking Almighty Allah (SWT) for this feat, I wish to express appreciation to those who contributed to this success. First is the Founder, Alh. Chief (Dr.) Abdulraheem Oladimeji, OFR, FNAEAP, fSPSP for his unceasing prayers, counsel and encouragement. The University’s Governing Council is also appreciated for granting the required financial support for the exercise. I need to mention the leadership and rank and file of the respective Faculties and Departments which partook in the Accreditation exercise – Deans, Heads of Departments, academic and non-academic staff as well as visiting lecturers in the respective Departments.

    Worthy of mention is the exemplary role played by the University management and the Director and staff of the Academic planning unit.”

    The current outstanding performance by the University in NUC Accreditation has further served to re-position Al-Hikmah University as one of the foremost and mostly subscribed private Universities in Nigeria”

    He added that all the academic programmes in the University requiring professional accreditation such as Law Programmes, Medical Laboratory Science and Nursing Science have also successfully secured the requirement by various regulatory bodies.

    According to him, “It is noteworthy that all academic programs in the University requiring professional accreditation have successfully secured the requirements. These include Law programs ( Common and Islamic Accredited by the Council for Legal Education (2020), Medical Laboratory Science Accredited by Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (2021) and Nursing science Accredited by Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (2021).”

    The VC revealed that the university operates subsidized school fees for some undergraduate programs such as Arabic and Islamic Studies, Education courses and some courses in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences such as Petroleum Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Statistics, Physics with Electronics, Bsc. Biology, Industrial Mathematics and Mathematics.

    “Agriculture program operates free tuition from 100 to 300 levels. It combines quality education with moral and spiritual trainings so that products from the university can rise above prevalence the decadence among today’s youths,” he said.

    Anambra governorship election petitions tribunal relocates to Ilorin

    The Anambra governorship election petitions tribunal has relocated its sittings from Awka to Ilorin in Kwara.

    Mr Surajo Gusau, Secretary of the tribunal, disclosed this in Awka on Tuesday.

    Gusau said that the movement took place on Dec. 17 saying that the tribunal had already settled down in Ilorin.

    He, however, did not disclose the reasons for the relocation, saying it was based an administrative directive.

    Gusau said that the tribunal was handling 12 cases apart from the one filed by Accord Party which was withdrawn on Dec. 9.

    The tribunal was set up to handle petitions arising from the Anambra governorship poll, won by Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

    Kwara Govt evicts Saraki’s football club from Ilorin Stadium

    The Kwara Government has evicted Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Ilorin FC from the state stadium complex, Ilorin.

    The eviction was contained in a notice sent to the club by the state Sports Council, dated June 10.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the football club was owned, managed and financed by two-time governor of the state and former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki.

    NAN reports that the notice, titled “Request To Vacant Facility”, was signed by the council’s Secretary, A.J. Adebisi.

    “The management of Kwara State Sports Council wish to inform you/your club that the bill for the establishment of Kwara State Sports Commission has been passed into law and presently awaiting assent by the Executive Governor, Malam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

    “The Council has been requested to make available comfortable office accommodation for the incoming board chairman and members to start work as soon as possible.

    “In view of the foregoing, the council wish to appeal to you/your club that the council will need to make use of the facility in club’s in possession to accommodate the incoming Commission chairman and members,” the notice reads in part.

    ABS Ilorin FC is currently seating 4th on the 2020/2021 Nigeria National League (NNL) Group A2 log with 21 points from 15 games.

    The club is helping to raise local players and turn them to football superstars.

    EFCC arrests 30 suspected Yahoo-Yahoo students in Kwara

    Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 30 suspected internet fraudsters, also known as Yahoo-Yahoo boys, in Ilorin.

    The arrest of the suspect who were mostly students picked from different locations within Ilorin followed “actionable intelligence received on their criminal activities”, the commission said.

    Items recovered from them include 10 exotic cars, mobile phones, laptops, charms and several “incriminating documents”.

    The EFCC said they will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded.

    Those arrested are Adigun Oladapo, Olamilekan Ogunsola, Fuad Abidemi, Haastrup Samuel, Olamide Adeyemi, Akinola Abideen, Ebenezer Haastrup, Kehinde Adeyemi, Quadri Kareem, Abubakar Abdulbashit, Damilola Akinola, Ola-Oluwa Samuel, David Oyewole, Mojereola Toheeb, Isaac Chikezie, Joshua Chiekezie, Abdulsalam Opeyemi and Abawonjo Abdulazeez.

    Others are Ganiyu Olanrewaju, Adeleke Ibrahim, Taiwo Ganiyu, Oke Gideon, Olakunle Adebisi, Ajani Samuel, Joshua Ogizien, Sodiq Olasupo, Olamilekan Mubarak, Adeniyi Olashile, Rotimi Adeyemi and Rasaq Olanrewaju.

    The commission lamented the prevalence of varsity students in internet fraud and cybercrimes during an anti-corruption sensitization lecture for students of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin.

    The Zonal Head of the Ilorin Office of the EFCC, Usman Muktar who spoke through the Head, Public Affairs Department of the Zone, Babatunde Ayodele urged students to imbibe the culture of excellence as future leaders of the country and to shun all forms of criminality.

    The EFCC boss decried the way students get involved in internet fraud and other form of economic and financial crimes, while stressing the determination of the Commission to bring such criminals to book.

    He advised the students to focus on their studies and desist from all forms of cybercrime and other forms of criminalities.

    Court stops Kwara govt from taking over Saraki’s property

    An Ilorin High Court on Tuesday restrained the Kwara State Government from taking over, “Ile-Arugbo”, the disputed properties belonging to late Abubakar Olusola Saraki.

    The three plots of land situated along the Ilofa Road GRA residence of the Sarakis has been a subject of litigation between them and the State Government.

    Justice A.O Akinpelu gave the interim order in suit No KWS/112/2021 filed by Asa Investment Ltd representing the Sarakis and one other, against Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, Kwara State House of Assembly, Attorney General of Kwara State, Director General, Kwara State Bureau of Lands and Inspector General of Police.

    The court further restrained the Kwara State Government from commencing any construction works on the said plots of lands pending the final determination of the case.

    According to the court order which was sited by Daily Trust Tuesday, “the state High Court in suit No KWS/112/2021 filed by Asa Investment and one other against the Governor and other respondents gave interim injunction restraining them either by themselves, their officers/employees, Servants, contractor/construction company, agents, privies or their successors in title or any other person known or unknown claiming in trust or in contractual reference/services for the defendants/respondents from taking over possession or occupation of the land.”

    It further restrained the defendants from “entering the plot of lands in dispute in this suit with intention/desire to construct, build, erect or commence any type of building, office, structure on the plots Nos 1, 3 and 5 with TPS/MISC.129A Survey Plan No KWSH927 and Land: G1071 and land G1071 situate, lying and being at Ilofa Road, GRA Ilorin, Kwara State besides Civil Service Clinic, pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice for interlocutory injunction.

    “An order of interim injunction mandating the Defendants/Respondents to maintain status quo ante bellum by not doing anything including construction on plots Nos 1, 2 and 5 with TPS/MISC.129A, Survey Plan No KWSH927 and land; G1071 situate, lying and being at Ilofa Road, GRA Ilorin, Kwara State beside Civil Service Clinic, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice,” the document added.

    The hearing of the case has been slated for April 13, 2021.

    Recall that Justice Abiodun Adewara had struck out the suit filed by the Sarakis over the matter about two months ago.

    Hijab Controversy: Police restore normalcy in Ilorin

    The Police Command in Kwara has restored peace and order after violence erupted on Wednesday in some of the Mission grant-aided schools over the use of Hijab by Muslim female students.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mr Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin.

    According to him, following the announcement by the state government to re-open the schools after it had been closed since Feb. 19, the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Bagega, deployed personnel to ensure that peace reign in the schools.

    “The situation grew worse as angry Christian and Muslim faithful started throwing various objects such as stones, plastic chairs and empty can drinks at themselves.

    “The security operatives deployed there called for reinforcement to calm the situation and the situation has been brought under control.

    ”Peace and order has been restored in the affected schools and everyone is now going about their normal activities,” the PPRO said.

    He however noted that no arrest has been made regarding the incident and no case of injury has been reported at the command.

    NAN recalls that the schools were closed on Feb. 19, over dispute in the usage of Hijab (Muslim female head gear) in Mission schools.

    The government set up a committee to resolve the misunderstanding and later announced that the schools would resume on March 8 with willing female students allowed to use Hijab.

    The government, however, withdrew the reopening order earlier given over safety concerns as some Christians were not willing to accept government decision. This led to the continuous closure of the schools.

    The affected schools included C&S College, Sabo-Oke; St. Anthony’s Secondary School, Offa Road; ECWA School, Oja Iya; Surulere Baptist Secondary School, and Bishop Smith Secondary School, Agba Dam.

    Others are CAC Secondary School, Asa Dam road; St. Barnabas Secondary School, Sabo-Oke; St. John School Maraba; St. Williams Secondary School, Taiwo Isale, and St. James Secondary School, Maraba.
