Why we increased passport fees – Immigration

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says the recently announced increase in international passport fees is to enhance quality, faster process and access.

Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, NIS Comptroller in Adamawa stated this on Monday in Yola, at the inauguration of an exercise to sensitise the people of the state to the increase in the fees.

Mohammed told the gathering that, with effect from Sept. 1, applicants within Nigeria will pay ₦50,000 for 32-page passport booklet with five years validity, an increase from the previous ₦35,000 fee.

He said the 64-page passport booklet with ten years validity will cost ₦100,000, up from ₦70,000.

Mohammed however, added that applicants abroad will not be affected by the upward review.

Justifying government decision, the Comptroller said: “This is a new enhanced passport with better durability and quality, aligning with international standards.

“It has fingerprints and with that, it is difficult to be faked or tampered with, unlike the old one”, he said.

He advised those intending to acquire/renew their passports to apply online or visit NIS offices.

Mohammed cautioned them against patronising agents to avoid being duped.

He urged religious leaders to sensitise their followers to the development, adding that any applicant before the deadline would be charged the old rate.

He said the service would also extend the awareness to Local Government Areas, starting with Mubi.

Mr Joel Manzo and Alhaji Aliyu Iya, representatives of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Muslim Council, Adamawa, respectively appreciated NIS for the enlightenment and assured taking down the message to their followers.

NIS has taken the sensitisation to motor parks and major streets in the state capital.

The controller said that NIS was working and collaborating with the  Ghanaian government to stop human traffickers.

“So quickly, we had to interview them and ask them their reasons for coming to Ghana.

“We realised somebody may have influenced  their coming to Ghana, because they said when you work in Ghana you have a lot of money so that is the reason they are coming to Ghana.

“They also came with their children, a mother coming with about six children, some have one, some have two.

“So, we realised that some traffickers brought them to Ghana but they did not tell us the truth.

Dellir said the other eight ladies were picked up from different locations in Ghana, doing prostitution.

She said human trafficking had been an issue in Ghana and Nigeria, so, when we see these vulnerable ones, we try to interview them and ask them why they are there and what they are doing.

One of the trafficked Nigerians, Uche John from Port-Harcourt, said she was lured to Ghana with promises of a better life but was instead forced into prostitution.

She said she was happy to be back in the country, haven  learnt her lessons in Ghana.

  • Just in: UK starts e-visa rollout today: no more immigration cards for millions – Details attached

Just in: UK starts e-visa rollout today: no more immigration cards for millions – Details attached

Starting today, millions living in the UK will receive email invitations to sign up for an e-visa account that will replace their physical immigration documents like Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs).

The move is, according to the Home Office, “a key step in creating a modernised and digital border” that will “boost security and value for the UK public” and provide greater reassurance, convenience, and flexibility.

Email invites sent to millions indicating the Home Office has started rolling out e-visas for existing holders of physical immigration documents like Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs).

Millions of such residents will start receiving email invites from today, in batches, prompting them to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account that will serve as digital proof of their legal immigration status.

“These invitations will be issued in phases, and although initially by invitation only, the process will open to all BRP holders in summer 2024,” states the Home Office. “eVisas are central to making the UK safer by reducing the risk of fraud, loss and abuse of physical documents, strengthening border security, and providing a more secure way to prove immigration status.

This will pave the way for increased automation to deliver the government’s vision for a contactless border.”

“It is free and straightforward for customers who hold physical and paper documents to create a UKVI account to access their eVisa. Creating a UKVI account will not change, impact or remove customers’ current immigration status or their rights in the UK.”

Minister for Legal Migration and the Border, Tom Pursglove MP, said in a press statement: “We’ve already taken really significant steps to digitally transform the border and immigration system, and this wider rollout of eVisas is a key part of that process.” “Replacing physical immigration documents with eVisas will ensure firm control over who comes here to live, work or study, strengthening border security and preventing abuse of the immigration system, while delivering cost-savings for UK taxpayers.” ‘Tried and tested’.

The announcement follows the British government’s plans we had earlier reported on that focus on fully digitalizing the border systems and phasing out physical immigration documents by 2025.

According to the Home Office, eVisas bring “substantial benefits” to the UK public and are secure as “unlike a physical document cannot be lost, stolen or tampered with.”

A sample UK Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card used to enter the country (UK Visas & Immigration) E-visas can be accessed in real-time from anywhere and as such, says the government, puts “customers in control of their own data.”

The online system will also allow them to “swiftly update the Home Office with new contact or passport details.” Organizations that require proof of your immigration status will conduct a quick and simple check via the GOV.UK website, whereas, public bodies such as the NHS England and Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) can automatically and securely access an individual’s status when they apply to access benefits and public services.

“eVisas are tried and tested, with millions of customers already using them across routes including the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS).

Most physical documents, such as biometric residence permits/cards (BRPs/BRCs) are being gradually phased out, with most BRPs expiring at the end of 2024,” says the Home Office.” Much like BRPs, an e-visa will be securely linked to its holder’s unique biometric information.

The shift to e-visas aligns with other developed countries that have already moved towards or are planning on adopting digital forms of immigration status.

Pros and cons While e-visas offer some advantages and the greater convenience of not having to worry about collecting and carrying physical documents, there may be some caveats. Despite their drawbacks, a key advantage of physical documents, especially chip-based ones, is their ability to be reliably verified offline, given the basics of public-key encryption.

When combined with additional security features such as UV holograms and watermarks built into these documents, the dependence on an always-online system is practically eliminated.

In other words, one can even use an NFC-powered smartphone app to securely read and verify the authenticity of a BRP card (or an ePassport) with utmost confidence, without being connected to the Internet.

The document holder’s details and photograph—all digitally signed by the issuing government, are stored in the biometric chip itself. Despite this, passengers have faced chaos at airports in the past when eGates went down.

What happens when the internet-connected IT systems used by airlines and border officials face an outage? In such a case, how can the identity of arriving passengers with eVisas, as opposed to physical biometric documents, be reliably verified?

BleepingComputer posed the question to the Home Office but is yet to receive clarity on the matter. Millions already use e-visas after their enrollment as part of the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS), and UK visitors from several countries are, in any case, granted an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) as opposed to a physical visa sticker, so the technology seems to be delivering thus far. People already with an e-visa don’t need to take any additional steps but are advised to keep their information and passport details up to date in their UKVI account.

The UK government still advises individuals to carry their valid physical immigration documents when traveling internationally, until these expire.

Additional information and updates regarding the rollout will be published at www.gov.uk/evisa.

Alleged assault: Immigration boss orders investigation

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has ordered investigation into an alleged assault of a journalist, Seun Falomo and personnel of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Agency (OYSRTMA) by some immigration officers.

The NIS Comptroller General, Kemi Nandap gave the order in a statement by the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO) Mr Kenneth Udo on Wednesday in Abuja.

Nandap said that the Service would not hesitate to sanction any of its Officers and Men who flaunted the law and code of conduct.

A news report had been circulating, alleging that some Immigration officers assaulted personnel of the OYSRTMA and one Seun Falomo, a journalist with Galaxy Television.

It was gathered that the incidence report promptly forwarded from Zone “F” Headquarters of NIS in Ibadan, Oyo State, where the incident occurred, indicated that personnel of OYSRTMA allegedly caught a retired Assistant Comptroller of Immigration (ACI).

He had violated  traffic rules at Onipepeye area (Old Ife road), and the personnel tried arresting him, but the latter who wanted to explain himself, was assaulted, leading to his son (who was driving his car) sustaining a fractured leg.

According to Nandap, regrettably, the situation further escalated when Immigration officers at Zone F office tried to intervene.

“I have ordered a thorough investigation into the case and we have however, swing into action to uncover the facts behind the fracas, “she said.

Nandap appealed for the understanding of the public and also seeks sustained collaboration with other sister agencies of government at all levels.

The NIS boss reaffirmed her commitment to upholding professionalism and integrity in delivering on NIS’ core mandates of border security and migration management, amongst others.

  • Why FG should improve working condition of NIS personnel – FCT Comptroller

Why FG should improve working condition of NIS personnel – FCT Comptroller

The Comptroller, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), FCT Command, Mr Tony Akuneme, says there is need for the Federal Government to improve the working conditions of immigration personnel, including their remuneration and logistics.

Akuneme said in an interview with NAN on Sunday in Abuja that there should also be deliberate efforts to build the capacity of the personnel to enhance operational efficiency.

He said in spite of the commitment of the personnel, their efforts were being hindered by inadequate funding, poor infrastructure and logistics.

The comptroller said that the command has very good plans for staff development, but could not push through due to funding constraints.

“I am committed to career growth and development, as well as welfare.

“We are in difficult times now, and anything we can do to put smiles on the faces of the people is welcome,” he said.

According to him, the most important and immediate intervention required is to get additional funding and logistics.

“If that is done, we’ll do better in providing quality services to the people of FCT, and Nigerians in general.

“No state comptroller is excited at what we get to run the commands, considering the cost of diesel to keep the command running.

“Let me tell you that what a comptroller gets to run the command in a month is about N100,000. That’s too poor. Where do you start from?

“Even though we get some supplies from the headquarters, but there are some accidental expenditures that can’t wait for response from the headquarters.

“We need more funding to enable us work well. That’s my appeal to the government,” Akuneme added.

He said that the NIS has a very efficient and committed workforce that requires a little push to deliver effective services to the public.

“We need more manpower, renumeration, training, welfare, technology, logistics, vehicle and other work tools.

“We cannot keep pretending and yet expect 21st century outcomes,” the comptroller said.

Akuneme said the new NIS Comptroller General, Kemi Nandap, has since assuming office, being providing inspirational and transparent leadership to the service.

“She operates an open door policy, and she has also promised to be judicious in handling the affairs of the service, particularly the finances and the well-being of officers, which is at the centre of her plans.

“All officers can attest to her fair and firm disposition.

“When she was a Deputy Comptroller General, she was part of those that improved the insurance scheme for officers, as well as the ongoing passport reforms.

“When the Minister of Interior, Mr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo came in, he took up the issue of passport and we can see the result,” he said.
