Trafficking: Immigration rescues 3-week-old baby in Calabar

The Marine Patrol team of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Cross River has rescued a three-week old baby suspected to be a victim of child trafficking at the high sea.

The Cross River Comptroller of NIS, Mr Okey Ezugwu, who briefed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the incident in Calabar, said that the suspected child trafficker, Mrs Maureen Awokara, was arrested on Dec. 19 at the high sea.

Ezugwu said that the suspect was arrested by the marine officers on patrol following her inability to give a comprehensive explanation on the true ownership of the baby.

“A few days ago, our officers at the marine patrol at the international waterways intercepted one Maureen Awokara, who claimed to be a native of Imo state with a three-week old child.

“During the arrest, she came up with all stories that were not adding up. Initially, she said the child belongs to her sister, yet we have carried out a preliminary investigation and all the lines she gave us to reach the sister, (name withheld), is not connecting.

“At this point, we are going to hand her over to NAPTIP for further investigations. Preliminary investigation gives us every reason to believe that the little child is been trafficked.
“The suspect claim she is going to Cameroon, Gabon and wherever. We are suspecting a cartel deal, because over time, we have had a lot of surveillance and serious checks at our border basis and the airport, making it impossible for any of them to use these routes.

“We are looking at a situation where they have now device a means of using the waterways, using small boats to take away this little children along,” he said.

He further explained that effort by the command to get in contact with other family members to ascertain if the family members were in agreement for her to take the baby away have proved abortive because the suspect was not willing to give them useful information on the matter.

Ezugwu told NAN that the NIS marine patrol team will continue to police the waterways with a view to ensure that all forms of child trafficking and other act of criminality are suppressed.

He urged parents to always watch over their children and shun any form of allowing their children to be trafficked for monetary purpose.

Responding, Awokara, 40, told NAN that the baby belongs to her younger sister who could not afford to take care of her after delivery on Dec. 2.

She told NAN that the younger sister decided to give her the child because she has been married for 18 years without a child.

“She gave me the baby in Imo state; since they brought me here, I have been trying to get in contact with her but her number isn’t connecting.

“The only time her number went through, I only heard a man’s voice, which was not her own,” she said.

When NAN sought to know if the father of the child was also in agreement for her to take the baby away, Awokara said that the father of the child denied the pregnancy even before delivery.

“My younger sister is between 18-20 years. This is not her first time of giving birth; but, we don’t know were the first child is as we speak,” she said.

Yes, #EndSARS promoter, Modupe Odele can’t leave Nigeria and here’s why – NIS breaks silence

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has finally broken the silence on why #EndSARS promoter, Modupe Odele’s passport was seized.

The Spokesman for the NIS, Mr. Sunday James who spoke on Thursday night noted that her passport was seized because a restriction order has been placed on her.

James confirmed the NIS was acting on a directive from an agency of the government to restrict Modupe from leaving the country.

He, however, stated that the restriction was not because of her #EndSARS activities but didn’t disclose “the agency of government” that gave the order.

He said, “When there is a directive from any agency of government not specific, we have to enforce either entry or restriction of entry by anybody who has been directed not to be allowed exit or entry and as a matter of fact, we cannot as a border management agency, allow anybody who has been restricted from leaving the country to go out and we cannot allow anybody who has been restricted from entry to enter.

“So, it is a routine assignment and it has nothing to do with End SARS. We are the lead agency for the security management of the border. It has to do with the restriction order which we are duty-bound to enforce.”

The NIS had on Sunday stopped Odele from boarding an Emirates flight to the Maldives through Dubai.

Odele, who is a lawyer, was one of the prominent personalities in the #EndSARS movement.

She was very active on social media and gave free legal assistance to several persons who were unjustly arrested by the police.

*As of now, I’m not aware of any charges against me or what I am under investigation for,” she stated on Tuesday via Twitter.

While the authorities have kept mum on the matter, Odele had said she would give an update when she has more information.

“We haven’t confirmed yet why I was stopped on Sunday or by whom. But I’ve been invited back in with my lawyers today.

*I’ll update when I have more information but please don’t spread false news. That is dangerous,” she tweeted.

Earlier, she had narrated in a newsletter how an immigration officer accustomed her at the airport on her way out of Nigeria.

“For my birthday, I had planned a trip to the Maldives. It was really for a break as the events of the last three weeks have exhausted my mind and body in a way I have never been exhausted in my life.

“I went to the airport, passed through immigration, and while I was putting my bags through the body and baggage scanner, the immigration officer who had previously cleared me, called me back. He told me he had orders from above to detain me.

“Okay, at this point I’m like excuse me, my flight is in an hour. On what grounds are you detaining me?” He didn’t respond. Instead, he goes to his computer where he typed in my name and something that looked like a ‘wanted poster’ popped up on the portal.

“He blocked my view so I couldn’t see most of it but I saw some of it. And it read something like – ‘This person is under investigation by XYZ Intelligence Agency. If seen, they should be apprehended on sight,” she wrote.

James said that NIS as the agency saddled with control of entry and departure from Nigeria of persons would not allow individuals or groups of well-educated Nigerians to disobey the laws.

He added that those who should know the procedures for travelling out of their country and the requirements, which include having a valid visa for entry into a destination country to leave, should not violate the laws.

“This is to avoid refusal of entry and repatriation back to Nigeria amidst COVID-19 pandemic. And also spreading of same as well as flouting the Federal Government’s directive on restriction of international flights unless for essential reason as approved by government.

“There is no official communication to the Service from the Ministry of Health in Nigeria or any known Medical body notifying the NIS of the travel of this number of medical doctors. The aircraft has departed for London without the medical doctors.

“The Comptroller General is taking this opportunity to advise Nigerians to always adhere to travel protocols. They should ensure they have valid passports with valid visa to the country they intended travelling to before going to any Airport, Seaport or Land Border Control to avoid refusal to depart,” he added.
