Police launch operation to free abducted priest in Imo

The Police Command in Imo says it has launched a rescue operation to free a Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Jude Maduka, who was kidnapped on Sunday morning.

Maduka, the Parish Priest of Christ the King Parish, Ezinachi/Ugwuago of the Diocese of Okigwe in Okigwe Local Government Area, was abducted while preparing for the Eucharistic Mass celebration.

The kidnap occurred barely 24 hours after  yet-to-be identified gunmen had ambushed and killed two policemen at Okpala junction in Ngor-Okpala Local Goeêvernment Area of the state.

A Catholic faithful, who pleaded anonymity,  said the Diocese had been informed of the kidnap.

The source, who expressed worry over the incident, noted that Catholic Priests had become sudden targets of hoodlums in the state.

“It has not been long a Catholic Priest of St. Paul’s Catholic Parish, Osu in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, Rev. Fr. Michael Asumogha, in the same Okigwe Catholic diocese was kidnapped and later released.

“This is not a good development and it should be nipped in the bud,” the source said, while praying for the quick release of Maduka.

Confirming the incident, the state’s Police spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye said in a phone call, that Maduka was kidnapped at the building site of his adoration centre.

According to him, the state Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Barde, has ordered full investigation and manhunt for the kidnappers.

“We are currently on the trail of the kidnappers to immediately rescue the priest and bring the hoodlums to face the wrath of the law,” he said.

  • Gunmen storm Imo community, kill two policemen

Gunmen storm Imo community, kill two policemen

Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State was on Saturday thrown into pandemonium when gunmen once again laid ambushed and killed two police officers on Saturday.

Recall that less than a month ago, gunmen ambushed and killed five policemen and a couple at the same Okpala junction located on the Owerri-Aba Road.

In the same Ngor Okpala LGA of the state, five officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were attacked and slain in March.

These recent and incessant developments have thrown the residents of the communities Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State into tragic and fearful mood.

Due to the tragedy that occurred on Saturday, many locals have deserted their homes and places of business.

Many claimed that seven officers were shot dead during the incident, even though the state’s police department had only acknowledged the deaths of two officers.

It was gathered that  gunmen initially opened fire on the policemen, killing two of them and one was injured this morning at a checkpoint along Aba Road in Okpala.

When contacted, the police spokesman for the command, Henry Okoye, said only two policemen “paid the supreme prize.”

He told our correspondent in a telephone conversation that the gunmen were engaged in a gun duel by “the vigilant policemen on duty.”

He added that the police had found the blood-stained car that the gunmen abandoned while traveling in one of their operating vehicles.

Okoye claimed the command’s operatives had seized control of the area to inspire confidence in the local populace and to locate the suspects.

  • You were installed as Gov through judicial fraud, not by God – PDP hits Uzodinma

You were installed as Gov through judicial fraud, not by God – PDP hits Uzodinma

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State have accused the Imo State governor, Hope Uzodinma of coming into power through judicial fraud, and not by God’s will.

This PDP stated this a press release signed by it’s publicity secretary, Collins Opurozor on Tuesday, 16th May and made available for newsmen.

The statement reads; “The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has been drawn to a recent statement credited to the outgoing Governor of the State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, in a church service wherein he claimed that it was God who installed him as Governor.

“Even though we know Senator Uzodinma to be sorely deficient in morality, sincerity and integrity, we had at least expected him to pretend to respect God by not spewing barefaced lies and blasphemy against the Almighty God right on His Holy Altar. But he has once again proven that leopard cannot change its spots.

“To be sure, Senator Uzodinma was declared winner of an election he barely participated in and deservedly came a distant fourth position.

He rode to power through the most satanic conspiracy enforced by the worst judicial fraud in the history of Nigeria. And wherever the forces of darkness reign, there is always blood, there is fire, there is weeping and there is misery. That is the case today in Imo State. It is the character of Satan to give with one hand and take with the other hand.

“Our Party recalls that in the aftermath of Uzodinma’s infamous judicial victory, Justice Nweze of the Supreme had cried out, that the decision of the Supreme Court to create and impose a governor on Imo State would continue to haunt Nigeria’s electoral jurisprudence forever. Till date, Imo has continued to be remembered whenever judicial travesty in Nigeria is discussed.

“Justice Nweze also noted that Uzodinma, during the election tribunal, admitted that he hijacked the result sheets from the electoral umpire officials and completed the result sheets by himself. He concocted results from 388 nonexistent polling units without indicating the votes polled by other political parties nor the number of accredited votes. Nweze regretted that without evidence of meeting other constitutional provisions, the court misled itself into declaring Uzodinma as winner.

“As a Party, we are duty-bound to remind Uzodinma that the God he mocked with his statement is not an author of fraud, criminality and injustice. The fraud that brought him to power turned Imo into a killing terrace, a field of agony, and a land of lack, deprivation and hopelessness. He cannot claim to have been installed by God when under his watch Imo has become a city of bloodshed and has plummeted in all indices of good life and good governance. This is not God’s desire for His people in Imo State. God is peace. He is also love and life. He is the ultimate giver of joy. But Imo today occupies the top positions in all the indices of social strife and misery in Nigeria.

“Our Party, therefore, cautions Uzodinma to stop dropping the name of God in celebration of his abominable truncation of democracy and vicious usurpation of the people’s mandate in Imo State.

“Imolites are aware that their covenant with God to reestablish a PDP-led administration in the State under Senator Samuel Anyanwu, which will wipe away tears, heal all wounds, offer succour to the masses, behead the monster of insecurity, make the land yield again, bring back those who have fled because of killings and make Imo safe again shall come to fruition on November 11, 2023. God never fails.”

  • Police begin manhunt for killers of Uzodimma’s kinsman

Police begin manhunt for killers of Uzodimma’s kinsman

The Imo Police Command says it has begun a manhunt for the killers of a retired military officer and Gov. Hope Uzodimma’s kinsman, Mr Tony Enoch.

Enoch was the Presidential Campaign Council Chairman for Ahmed Bola Tinubu/Kashim Shettima election in Uzodimma’s Oru East Local Government Area (LGA).

He was gruesomely murdered by yet-to-be identified gunmen in the state.

Confirming the incident, the command’s Spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye, said the deceased was shot dead on Tuesday, while returning home from APC stakeholders’ meeting in Omuma area of the LGA.

“It is true, he was shot dead by miscreants suspected to be members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed group of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“The Commissioner of Police has condemned the attack and ordered for the arrest of the assailants. We are currently investigating and on top of the situation,” Okoye said in an interview in Owerri.

It was learnt that the assailants forced the remains of the deceased into the boot of his car after killing him.

They later abandoned the car close to Awo-Omama Technical College.

It was learnt that the remains of the ex-military personnel were uncovered by a villager, who noticed the pool of blood dropping from the boot of the vehicle.

“The villager raised alarm, attracting other villagers to the scene,” a native of the area told NAN on the condition of anonymity.

  • From Imo State, technology shines light to the future – By Okoh Aihe

From Imo State, technology shines light to the future – By Okoh Aihe

It is always a feeling of joy when Dr Chimezie  Amadi gets in touch. A feeling that something can really go well in the country if there is somebody to push a vision, somebody to make a sacrifice in order to make a difference. Amadi comes with a freshness which nourishes a wearied life in our dear nation.

When we introduced him on this page in October last year, Amadi who just joined the Imo State government on secondment from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), was nursing the Digital Imo idea and was kind enough to share it with us for dispassionate assessment. The project which is targeted at introducing the unemployed young people of Imo State to the world of technology and also help depopulate  the sordid world of unemployment, has gained traction and is receiving generous commendations.

Dr Chimezie Amadi, who is the Commissioner for Digital Economy and E-Government, went to Imo State with a concrete vision and measurable work plan and, his state which used to be known for a number of things far from good news, is enjoying the zenith by ranking agencies.

Our recent conversation ignited some fire in me and I don’t want to call it fury. My mind went to the NITDA Bill at the National Assembly with which the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, and a few desperate cohorts, want to supplant the telecoms regulatory agency, the Nigerian Communicatioms Commmission (NCC). All of a sudden, a small development agency wants to grow wings and swallow up the biggest regulatory agency in Africa and people fail to see the making of evil.

Do they know what it takes to build a regulatory agency like the NCC? They should get across to Engr Ernest Ndukwe for answers and if their power for necromancy hasn’t failed them, they should also reach out to late Alhaji Ahmed Joda. Building an NCC, for instance, demands a lot of investment in the right human capital, that was before politics assumed the power of employment at the Commission, lots of training – local and international; the NCC worker is trained for the present and future of work, and can function in whatever ecosystem he is placed. Amadi is paradigmatic of the knowledge capital available at the NCC and it is fitting that the Governor of the state, Senator Hope Uzodinma, looked beyond politics to pick those to work with him.

Amadi’s SkillUpImo, which has become a cardinal programme of the Uzodinma government has given a vista of opportunity for the young people in the state to acquire digital skills and be given start up equipment or seed funding to start their businesses.

With training centres at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Imo State University, KO Mbadiwe University, Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, College of Health Management Services, Alvan Ikoku College of Education, University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Claristian University, Imo State Polytechnic, and Ministry of Digital Economy and E-Government, the state has been able to democratise technology adoption trainings for the majority and make it available in the nook and cranny of the state.

The result, according to Amadi, is that “We have been able to position Imo as a leading digital skills hub in the country. We graduated 5000 students in Cohort 1 who were trained in various digital and tech skills. The governor has equipped them in their various startup endeavours. He gave out almost 3000 laptops, car tracking kits and smart phones for some of the graduates, while some others with visual and hearing challenges were given a hundred thousand Naira each.”

Amadi pointed out that what has happened in Imo State is that the government has “engineered a startup economy” where the young graduates have quickly embedded themselves into providing government with tech services and also providing needed digital services for other businesses in the state.

“People can see there is an economy beyond agriculture, building of roads, and buying and selling. They have come to realise that there is an economy fuelled by the Internet,” he said.

Could Amadi just be staying on the rooftop and blowing his trumpet to draw attention to non existent achievements or call it even a wave of developments in the state? The testimonies of other people provide the answer.

A recent report by FATE Institute of the famed FATE Foundation titled, State of Entrepreneurship Index for Nigeria, puts Imo State well ahead of other states of the federation. Which is a little surprising, just like South Korea being put above Sweden, USA, China and the United Kingdom among others in tech development and connectivity index some years ago. Over time it has become very obvious that such development depends on genuine actions taken to uplift an environment, organisation or a country.

For instance, the FATE Institute based its ranking on five major pillars, which include: Business Performance, Skills Acquisition, Innovation and Technology, Perception of Opportunities, and Enabling Business Environment. Some of these pillars were directly addressed by Amadi in his SkillUpImmo document. There is every indication that Cohort 2 which is targeting 15,000 trainees will bring even more visibility to the activities of the Imo State government.

Another testimony. Dr Pantami who was Special Guest of Honour at the graduation of the first 5000 trainees described the “Imo State programme as a shift from creating job employees to producing job creators.”

Such is the power of tech knowledge acquisition, transforming very little fellas into big guys overnight, ready to rule the world.

Speaking to this writer in October last year, Amadi explained, “The Digital IMO project aims to train 100,000 youth, women and people living with disabilities in core 21st century skills in software development, blockchain, game development and other technical vocational skills.”

This was our position then. “The easiest verdict to give here is that Amadi is fully prepared for his new job as the Commissioner for Digital Economy and e-Governance. But that is not the way it works in government, especially at the state level, where petty jealousy and frivolous gossip are credentials for daily governance, where urgent files would go on circumlocutory journeys and may never return. It is the responsibility of Senator Uzodinma to empower his new Ministry and support it to use technology to straighten administrative processes , and make governance, businesses and investment appealing and attractive. In fact, be the first to run a state on technology.”

From all indications, the governor has empowered Amadi who is working towards achieving his dream for Imo State as the stats have demonstrated. We wish him well.

But my little fascination with the Imo project is its demonstration that development is not rocket science. In a country where youth unemployment is well over 53 per cent, the state has done well in trying to take its youths off the streets and wean them of frustration through digital tech training.

If this model is working, and there is the need to do more inquisition, it will not  be a bad idea for other states to look at what works for them too, more than building roads and bridges and giving poverty tokens to undocumented population, and initiate development projects that rests more in building capacity in the people to ensure the future of work. The way to the future  is technology, obviously.

Just In: Anxiety in Imo as gunmen kill five policemen, couple

Gunmen on Friday morning killed five policemen at the Okpala Junction in the Ngor Okpala Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State.

It was gathered that also killed were a couple identified as Mr and Mrs Chinaka Nwagu who hailed from Amankwo Okpala community.

The incident has thrown the junction and the entire community into a state of panic as commercial activities had abruptly come to end.
source who identified himself as Uche and a relative to the couple divulged that the slain cops drove from neighbouring Abo Mbaise police division to eat at the junction.

According to him, while the policemen were eating, some gunmen drove to the scene and opened fire on them.

He said that while three police officers were shot dead at the scene, two others ran to a nearby shot but their attackers raced to the shop and killed them and equally killed a couple who owned the shop they ran into.

The eyewitness disclosed that after killing the policemen, the gunmen carted away their five rifles.

“It is a black Friday in our community. Gunmen around 8am shot five policemen dead at Okpala junction. The policemen drove in a white coloured Hilux from Aboh Mbaise Police Division to eat at the junction.

they were eating, gunmen drove to the place and opened fire on them. Two out of the five policemen ran to a nearby shop where a couple sold meat pie and sachet water. After killing the three policemen, they came two the shop where the two other officers were hiding and killed them. They also killed a husband and wife that owned the shop.

“They took away their rifles and drove off. This is so unfortunate. Our community is bleeding. Everybody is confused. The couple just relocated from Lagos about one year ago. We just deposited their bodies in a mortuary. The market is shut. People here ran away out of shock and fear. This is unbelievable,” the source said.

  • 10th NASS: My eye is on Speaker position – Rep Onuoha

10th NASS: My eye is on Speaker position – Rep Onuoha

Rep. Miriam Onuoha (APC-Imo) the only female aspirant for the office of the Speaker says her eye is on the number one seat in the 10th House of Representatives and not to be a principal officer.

Onuoha, who made this known in an interview, in Abuja on Wednesday, said: ”To be a principal officer is no longer a new thing in the House of Reps.

“Currently in the 9th assembly, the Deputy Chief Whip is Rep Nkiruka Onyejiocha and that position has not given her the necessary leverage to act for the women as she would want.

”I do not aspire to be in that category of principal officers because that is not a presiding office.

“I am running to be a presiding officer of the 10th House of Reps Speaker because I know that I am qualified and have the experience to transform the national assembly”.

She said her motive was to transform the House of Reps to a citadel as an example to other legislators in the world.

She said the women have not been adequately included in the management of the house of representatives affairs, noting that the time has come to change the narrative.

“The attribute of a woman is inclusiveness. A woman breaths life and a woman nurtures. At this time of our political history,” she said.

Onuoha, who has since 2015 represented Okigwe North Federal Constituency in the Green Chamber, secured re-election into the 10th Assembly in February and is the only female contestant in the Speakership race.

She is the House Committee Chairperson on Disability.
