Just In: NBA Imo State Branches to boycott all courts from Monday to register their anger over murder of Judge

Disturbed by the gruesome murder of Judge Nnaemeka Ugboma, all Imo NBA branches are boycotting courts to register their anger as from on Monday.

TheNeweGuru.com, (TNG) recalls that Ugboma while presiding over a matter was murdered last Thursday.

This was contained in a statement signed by all the Chairmen of the branches of NBA in the state and made available to the press on Saturday, the boycott will last for three days.

Read the full Press release below:

“The Branches of the Nigerian Bar Association in Imo State deplore the cold blooded murder of a judicial officer, His Worship Nnaemeka Ugboma, Esq., who was shot point blank in Court by yet to be identified gun men on the 2nd of February, 2023.

“On receipt of the news, the Owerri Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association promptly engaged lawyers within the affected jurisdiction as well as staff of the affected court, who confirmed the incident.

“We also convened an emergency meeting and further contacted the heads of the judiciary, particularly the Chief Judge of Imo State and the President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Imo State.

“The Commissioner of Police, Imo State, has also received a request from us for an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident and to ensure that the culprits are apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law.

“The Imo Bar notes with deep concern that the attacks on judicial institutions have become a disturbing trend in Imo State, and has taken an unfortunate turn by the murder of Mr. Ugboma.

“This dastardly act is highly condemnable as it desecrates the temple of justice and undermines the confidence of the citizens in the judiciary as the last hope of the common man.

“The Bar therefore calls on the Imo State Government to provide, with immediate effect, security in and around all the courts in Imo State, which have remained porous despite the sensitive role they play in the society.

“The Imo Bar, in consonance with the national body of the NBA, ably led by Y.C. Maikyau, OON, SAN, firmly resists the attempt to undermine the judiciary and the legal profession, and instill fear in the conduct of judicial proceedings. Also, citizens need to be aware that judicial officers and lawyers are not their enemies or opponents; they only aid in the administration of justice.

“In the circumstance, the members of the NBA in Imo State have resolved to boycott all courts in Imo State, starting from Monday 6th February 2023 to Wednesday 8th February 2023, in order to register our displeasure with the current state of affairs.

“Until the members of the Bar in Imo State are sufficiently assured of the safety of the judiciary, the Bar and the litigants as requested, we shall continue to review the situation and to take further necessary actions.

According to monitored report , Ugboma was killed by gunmen who operated in motorcycles while presiding over a court session.

The incident brought the court sitting to an abrupt end as lawyers, court staff and litigants fled.

“He was killed in his court while sitting. His killers came with motorcycles. They came into the court, dragged him out and shot him dead and drove off.

Police launch manhunt for killers of Imo LG Sole Administrator

The Police Command in Imo says it has launched a manhunt for the abductors and killers of the Sole Administrator of Ideato North Local Government Council, Mr Christopher Ohizu.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Henry Okoye, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Owerri.

Recall that Ohizu’s house, located at Arondizuogu, was attacked and razed by gunmen at about 11: 00 p.m. on Jan. 19.

He was later abducted, along with two other persons, to an unknown place, while the vehicles parked within his premises were burnt.

The police spokesperson said that Ohizu was subsequently killed by the suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Okoye said: “The command is aware of the iniquitous and obscene video that has gone viral on social media where a man, suspected to be the abducted Ideato North LGA sole administrator, was seen kneeling down, with his hands tied, undergoing inhuman act.

“The man was subsequently killed by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network (ESN).

“The command wishes to inform the good people of the state that we are already on top of the situation, following a high-powered investigation team, inaugurated by the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde.”

Okoye said the team had commenced technical investigation from the day of the abduction.

He also stated that the team had been on the trail of the hoodlums, where tremendous progress was being made before the surfacing of the obscene video.

The police spokesperson noted that the command’s tactical teams were not relenting in their efforts at arresting and unraveling the identity of the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

He assured the people of the state that the command would ensure that the perpetrators were made to face the full wrath of the law.

Okoye called on the good Ideato North community and the general public to remain calm and go about their lawful businesses.

“The police and other security agencies are working assiduously, as adequate security measures have been put in place to forestall future occurrence,” he said.

The police spokesman advised all and sundry to assist the police with credible information and report any clandestine activities or suspicious persons seen in their communities to the nearest police station.

He urged members of the public to call the command’s emergency numbers: 08034773600 or 08098880197 to volunteer useful information that could lead to the arrest of the criminals.

  • Imo PDP alleges Uzodinma behind attack on its Reps candidate, Ugochinyere

Imo PDP alleges Uzodinma behind attack on its Reps candidate, Ugochinyere

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has alleged that the Governor Hope Uzodinma administration was behind attack on its House of Representatives candidate, Chief Ikenga Ugochinyere on Saturday.

The PDP therefore is alerting the security Agencies, Nigerians, the International Community to what it described as sponsored killings and arson which happened at the Akokwa residence of Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the Party’s candidate for Ideato North/South Federal Constituency in the 2023 election.

Chief Ugochinyere’s home was attacked in the afternoon on Saturday where there was shooting for nearly 30 minutes with an undisclosed number of persons reportedly killed including an uncle of the politician, buildings and a number of vehicles razed in the process.

The PDP in Imo State however, described the unfortunate incident as “a well-coordinated armed attack at the Akokwa residence of Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the candidate of our Party for Ideato North/South Federal Constituency.”

Collins Opurozor, the Imo State Publicity Secretary of the PDP said in a statement
that there was an earlier attack on the convoy of the candidate “by clearly-identified agents of the Imo State Government”.

While the attack lasted, the PDP feared for the worse.

Opurozor said: “Our efforts to get back to our candidate, Ikenga Ugochinyere, who was present at his residence when this attack began and who had personally alerted us to the attack, has proven abortive.

“However, a torrent of messages, a while ago, from Ikenga’s close aides bore some deeply pathetic lines like: “Everywhere is on fire! They are killing us! We are going going!”

Imo PDP therefore called on security agencies to immediately intervene and quell the attack on its candidate and it’s Party members at his residence in Akokwa.

The Imo State PDP Spokesperson said: “Nigerians and international community are to recall that on December 23, 2022, there was an attack on the convoy of our candidate by clearly-identified agents of the Imo State Government.

“It is shocking that despite our demand for the arrest and prosecute of those involved in that onslaught, nothing has been done by the security till this moment.

“Today represents a dark day for us in Imo PDP and Imo State at large.”

  • PDP, APC trade words over Gov. Uzodimma’s scorecard in 3 years

PDP, APC trade words over Gov. Uzodimma’s scorecard in 3 years

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo have disagreed over Governor Hope Uzodimma’s scorecard within three years in office.

Recall Governor Uzodimma assumed office on Jan. 14, 2020, following a judgment of the Supreme Court which affirmed his victory at the 2019 governorship election in the state.

While the PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr Collins Opurozor, said Uzodimma’s three years were enmeshed in economic stagnation, mass penury, insecurity and infrastructural decay, the APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Cajetan Duke, dismissed the statement.

In a statement signed by the PDP publicity secretary and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Owerri, Opurozor argued that the greatest casualties of Gov. Uzodimma’s emergence are the Imo people.

He alleged that Uzodimma had, in the past three years, worked so hard to ensure that all the institutions of democracy in the state are dismantled and full-blown dictatorship firmly established.

Opurozor further claimed that bloodshed, poor healthcare, collapse of education, dearth of agricultural productivity, conscription of the political space and violation of human rights have become the order of the day.

“For instance, the local government system, which is a mechanism put in place to expand and sustain the democratic space and spread democratic values, has been destroyed in Imo State.

“This is a huge tragedy! Imo is a state that has over 70 per cent of her entire population living in the rural areas.

“Yet, the only channel through which governance can be delivered to the people has been completely run aground,” he contended.

Opurozor also claimed that in last 36 months, Uzodinma had received from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) a total of N180.6 billion meant for the Local Governments in the state.

“Today, there is nothing on ground that shows that even a kobo has gotten to the Local Government Areas.

“Sen. Hope Uzodimma must, without any further delay, tell Imo people where he kept the N180.6 billion belonging to the Local Governments,” he said.

He argued that Uzodimma had made incessant borrowings a state policy which had plunged the state into irredeemable debt slavery.

According to him, Imo is currently the most indebted Igbo state, with a debt profile which stands at N220 billion.

“That means that the regime of Sen. Uzodinma has doubled the debt profile in less than three years and the fundamental question is: What has the regime done with over N100 billion it has borrowed so far?”

He said in spite of the borrowings, Uzodimma had made no effort at re-jigging investments in the hugely vital agro-industrial sector where Imo has major comparative advantage.

“What Senator Uzodinma really needs to explain to Imo people is how he diverted a whopping sum of N56 billion on the pretence of constructing the 36-kilometer Owerri-Orlu road.

“Does the administration in Imo want the people to believe that a kilometer of road was done at the rate of N1.5 billion?

“This same Craneburg Construction Company, which works for Uzodinma, has also done the Lekki-Epe Road in Lagos State and the Ibadan Circular Road in Oyo State.

“In both instances, even drainages and terrains rougher than Imo, the cost never exceeded N450 million per kilometer, but in Uzodinma’s Imo, the cost of a single kilometer of road by the same company suddenly became N1.5 billion,” he said.

Opurozor estimated that the 2023 budget revenue of the state would be sourced from FAAC, 13 per cent derivation, internally generated revenue, intervention grants would amount to N120.6 billion.

He maintained that Gov. Uzodimma is already planning to spend N475 billion within the year with the deficit of N354 billion which would be raised through borrowings.

“The loans would be solely dedicated to expanding Uzodimma’s political war chest and financing sundry other electoral malpractices, including massive vote buying.

“Already, agents of Imo APC have started distributing forms, requesting for bank accounts and PVC details of Imo voters so as to commence the first phase of this brazen electoral fraud,” he alleged.

He claimed that the party had intercepted credible intelligence about the planned role which the Uzodinma-backed Ebubeagu Militia would play in this process of derailing democracy in the state.

He therefore urged the Inspector-General of Police to immediately disband Ebubeagu Militia, claiming that since Ebubeagu began its operations in the state, insecurity, killings, abductions and arson have risen astronomically.

But dismissing the claims however, the APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Cajetan Duke, said the PDP should rather praise Uzodimma for the giant strides of development in the past three years.

Duke said: “We are glad today that the opposition PDP has confirmed by the contents of their press conference of the reconstruction of the Owerri-Orlu road.

“Their argument on the cost of the project is neither here nor there!

“PDP should stop reminding Imolites of their seven months illegal occupation of Douglas House and the unimaginable looting of our common patrimony.

“When they talk about the January 14th, 2020, landmark judgment of the Supreme Court, Imo PDP validates our position that the insecurity in the state is politically contrived,” he added.

Duke contended that the PDP’s argument on borrowing had reduced opposition politics to a roadside gossip as borrowing to fund investment in the critical sector of the economy was not a crime.

“Almost three years in office, nobody, including the opposition PDP, has accused Gov. Hope Uzodimma of converting public wealth to personal and private uses.

“No one has accused the governor of building a new house or renovating his old house in the village.

“Nobody has accused Uzodimma of appropriating any public land or asset to himself or any member of his family since inception of this administration,” he argued.

The APC publicity secretary further described PDP’s accusation of borrowing money to compromise the forthcoming general elections as an “acknowledgement of defeat”.

He said Imo PDP was only intimidated by the popularity of the APC-led shared prosperity administration of Gov. Hope Uzodimma.

“Their strategy is to do everything humanly possible to discredit the outcome of the forthcoming election.

“While they were busy labouring, albeit in vain, to undermine this administration, the Supreme Court, today nullified the Imo West senatorial primaries of the PDP,” he added.

  • Supreme Court nullifies PDP Imo West Senatorial primary election

Supreme Court nullifies PDP Imo West Senatorial primary election

The Supreme Court on Friday nullified the primary election of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which produced Mr Jones Onyerere as its Senatorial candidate for Imo West in the forth coming February National Assembly election.

Justice Emmanuel Agim in a judgment on the appeal filed by Mr Nnamdi Ezeani said that PDP grossly violated section 87 (9) of the Electoral Act by conducting the primary election outside the venue clearly stipulated by law.

The Apex Court nullified the primary election on the ground that it was conducted in Owerri, the Imo State Capital instead of Orlu being the Senatorial Headquarters of Imo West.

It held that by the judgment, PDP will not participate in the next month Senatorial election having failed to produce its candidate within time allowed by law.

It also held that since the time for conduct of primary election to nominate candidates was already over, it is deemed that the party would not have candidate in the February 25 National Assembly poll.

Agim warned the parties to always conduct their affairs within the ambit of the law adding that section 87 (9) of the Electoral Act is clear on where primary election should be conducted.

  • Leadership crisis in Imo PDP threatens Atiku’s chances

Leadership crisis in Imo PDP threatens Atiku’s chances

A leadership tussle in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo between former Gov. Emeka Ihedioha and the state’s chapter of the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) is tearing the party apart in the state.

While the state’s Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council, Mr Greg Egu is blaming Ihedioha of frustrating campaign plans, spokesman of the party in the state, Mr Collins Okpuruzo, dismissed allegations against Ihedioha.

The tussle is further heightened by the leadership crisis in Imo PDP between the National Secretary of the party, Mr Samuel Anyanwu and Ihedioha.

The campaign council director-general told newsmen in Owerri that Ihedioha’s actions could jeopardise Atiku’s campaign in Imo.

Egu said since his emergence as the director-general, Ihedioha had done a lot to frustrate the entire campaign management of the Imo PCC.

“All the 41 candidates of the PDP in Imo have found it difficult to campaign for Atiku because of the body language of Ihedioha who is playing a double-faced game.

“One cannot be working hard for Atiku and at the same time be painting his campaign structure in bad light in the estimation of the public.

“All that Ihedioha has been doing is to further his ambition to be Imo governor a third time and that is why he is frustrating the PCC,” Egu said.

He alleged that rather than ensure a cohesive campaign structure, Ihedioha had been side-tracking the PCC and frustrating the harmonious function of council members to further his governorship ambition.

He argued that there was no reason for Ihedioha to continue to convene meetings in his residence when the PCC had a befitting campaign building in Owerri.

“There is a party secretariat in Owerri where he can convene meetings, if he doesn’t like the Atiku/Okowa campaign building.

“All Ihedioha’s nominees within the presidential campaign council have also refused to attend meetings of the council.

“I called meetings on the Dec. 24, 2022, Jan. 7 and Jan. 11, and not a single loyalist of Ihedioha in the Imo PCC attended.

“We warn Ihedioha to desist from unilaterally convening meetings of his selected nominees in his private residence in the name of the Imo PCC because we cannot guarantee his true intentions,’’ he stressed.

Egu the Imo PCC had resorted to media campaigns and was engaging support groups to facilitate Atiku/Okowa victory.

“We have constituted Atiku/Okowa teams at the ward levels and collation centres.

“These measures are complementary to the structures set up by the state executive council of PDP and those contesting elections into other offices,’’ he said.

A chieftain of the PDP and member of the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council, at the news conference, Mr Myke Ikeoku alleged that Ihedioha had refused to invest in the party’s PCC.

“It is obvious that the state executive council of the party had turned itself into the re-election campaign organisation of Ihedioha because every action they have taken with respect to PCC promotes the personal interest of Ihedioha’s governorship ambition.

“Atiku’s campaign in Imo is in trouble because Ihedioha has been using Atiku/Okowa Campaign in the state to campaign for his governorship aspiration. This will destroy the opportunity Atiku has in Imo,’’ Ikeoku said.

Dismissing all the allegations, however, Imo Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Collins Okpuruzo, described Ihedioha as the leader of the party in the state.

He said Ihedioha was genuinely committed to the victory of Atiku and the 41 candidates of the party in Imo.

“I can confirm today that most of the activities carried out for our presidential candidate are being funded by Ihedioha.

“The publicity programmes we have and the bill boards, advertorials and jingles that are everywhere are directly sponsored by Ihedioha.

“He has also deployed his transportation network, contacts and loyalists into the field to aggressively mobilise for the victory of Atiku Abubakar.

“Anybody that accuses Ihedioha of not supporting or working for the victory of Atiku Abubakar is only playing to the gallery and only being dishonest,’’ Okpuruzo stressed.
