PDP’s National Secretary constitutes mobilization group to ensure party’s victory in Imo

National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Samuel Anyanwu has constituted a grassroots mobilisation group, the Divine Mandate Movement to campaign for the party’s success in Imo in 2023.

Anyanwu said at the inauguration of the group in Owerri that the party was determined to win the presidential, governorship, National and State Assembly seats in the state.

He said the movement was conceptualised in 2015 to deliver the 305 wards, the 10 federal constituencies and the three senatorial seats in the state to the PDP.

“Our mission is to mobilise the people for our presidential, vice-presidential, governorship, Senatorial, House of Representatives and House of Assembly candidates at the 2023 general elections.

“Our mandate is to ensure the overall victory of the PDP at the 2023 general elections so that we can kick-start the onerous task of rescuing, rebuilding and redirecting our nation,’’ he said.

He charged officials and members of the movement not to be intimidated by threats from opposition parties, which are bent on oppressing the people.

“Imo is home to PDP and the people are standing shoulder to shoulder with us on this task.

“There will be challenges including provocations and attempts by oppressive forces to intimidate or distract you from the mandate.

“I charge you to remain undeterred and above all, continue to conduct yourselves in the very organised and decent manner for which the Movement and the PDP are known,’’ Anyanwu said.

He also charged members not to indulge in politics of name calling and mudslinging as it could distract their attention from the stated goals.

“Our people look up to us for solution and, for them, we must reenergise ourselves for the rescue mission,’’ Anyanwu stressed.

Earlier, the Director-General of the Movement, Mr Ngozi Ogbu said the ultimate aim of the group was to position it to face the daunting challenges of the 2023 demands.

“Today, we have provided and furnished a befitting state secretariat for this purpose. This will be replicated in all the 27 local government areas of the state,’’ he said.

  • Gov Uzodinma, IPOB disagree on who is responsible for attack on Imo community

Gov Uzodinma, IPOB disagree on who is responsible for attack on Imo community

There is a back-and-forth between the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma and the lawyer to the leader of IPOB, Ifeanyi Ejiofor over who is responsible for attack on Orsu-Ihiteukwa community in Orsu Local Government Area.

IPOB released a set of gory videos and pictures of the attack allegedly carried out by members of the Ebubeagu security outfit in Imo State and blamed it on Governor Hope Uzodimma.

Ejiofor made the allegation in a statement titled, “Black weekend in Orsu-Ihiteukwa, Orsu LGA of Imo State.”

The body accused the Governor of ordering the security operatives to carry out the incident which included attacks on buildings, killing of citizens and burning of houses and shops.

But the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Oguwike Nwachukwu, washed the hands of government off the incident, saying people make allegations against Uxodinma for the fun of it.

“People can allege anything against the governor because it gives them joy to do so.Governor Uzodimma has never and will never instruct security operatives or anybody for that matter to kill innocent people,” Nwachukwu said.

He added, “Please, get in touch with security agencies because the concern you have raised bothers on security.

“However, let me say it is unfortunate that we often ignore the operational rule of the engagement that exists within the security agencies, with their different hierarchies taking responsibility for their actions; but it’s not fair to resort to mischievous finger-pointing at Governor Uzodimma.”

But the lawyer said the formerly peaceful community was last weekend, invaded by the combined team of Ebubeagu and the Nigerian Army.

“It is heart-rending that at this period of economic downturn, the only available daily market in the community, where the downtrodden go to for communal trade in search of their daily bread, was completely razed to the ground, and homes burnt by these evil monsters acting on behalf of the state government.

“Indigenes of the community were thrown into this unexpected horror, and out of fear, they fled from their homes. Right now, Orsu-Ihiteukwa is a ghost town.

“We ask the governor if there could there be any justification, whatsoever, under any known law in Nigeria, as well as the international jurisprudence, that sanctioned this oppressive, barbaric, wicked, soulless and evil destruction of the lives and property of his people that he swore to protect.

“We, therefore, call for the immediate arrest and prosecution of all those involved in these inhuman, wicked, and barbaric acts.”

  • Imo Govt., PDP disagree over alleged CVR fraud

Imo Govt., PDP disagree over alleged CVR fraud

The Imo State Government and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the State have disagreed over the mastermind behind the alleged irregularities in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voter registration in the state.

Recall that the Spokesman for the Conference of United Political Parties, Ikenga Ugochinyere, recently raised an alarm, alleging that the register for Omuma Ward, which is Gov. Hope Uzodimma’s place, contained fictitious and fraudulent names.

The party accused the State Government of complicity in the alleged fraud. In a reaction at a news briefing on Saturday in Owerri, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Declan Emelumba, described the allegation as reckless, irresponsible and seditious.

Emelumba said that the allegation “could only have come from a jaundiced, mischievous mindset”.
He called for the immediate arrest of Ugochinyere, who is the PDP’s candidate for Ideato Federal Constituency in the 2023 elections.

“On the claim that Omuma ward had fewer than 6,000 registered voters in 2014, I have it on good authority from verified INEC data that the ward had almost 10,000 voters as at 2014 and had 23,000 registered by 2019.

“This is obviously because many indigenes of the ward came home to register to be able to vote for their son, who was contesting the governorship election.

“It is therefore clear that Ugochinyere either hacked into INEC’s server and doctored documents therefrom or forged the document he was brandishing. Either way is criminal and it is important that he is immediately arrested for questioning,” the commissioner said.

Responding to Emelumba’s reaction, the state PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr Collins Opuruozor, said that the party would not tolerate any attack, threat or harassment of its candidate by the State Government.

“Not a single hair shall fall from Ugochinyere’s head, nor a scratch found on his body,” Opuruozor said.

He urged INEC to carefully look into the allegation, saying that it was a treasonable offence, capable of truncating the country’s democracy, if proven to be true.

He also challenged the security agencies to carry out painstaking investigations into the matter, vis-a-vis the governor’s alleged involvement in the saga.

“We commend the shrewdness and dexterity brought to bear by our candidate in exposing the suspected monumental electoral malfeasance,” Opuruozor said.

IPAC, Imo Govt urge caution among politicians

Meanwhile, state chapter of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), including the Imo State Government have called for caution in the handling of the alleged compromise of the INEC voter register in the state.

They also urged politicians to desist from any act capable of hitting up the polity ahead of the 2023 general elections. They made the call in separate reactions to the claim by the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) that the voter register in Imo and 20 other states had been compromised.

The Spokesman for CUPP, Mr Ikenga Ugochinyere, had alleged that inflated figures and fictitious names were uncovered in the voter register for Omuma Ward of Gov. Hope Uzodimma. The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Declan Emelumba, dismissed the allegation as “reckless, irresponsible and seditious.

“It could only have come from a jaundiced, mischievous mindset,” he said. Emelumba said that the establishment of a tertiary institution at Omuma could have accounted for the existence of non-Igbo names in the voter register.

According to him, only those who hack INEC’s server can gain access to the commission’s information that has yet to be brought to public knowledge.

He, therefore, urged relevant security agencies to arrest and investigate CUPP and its spokesman, in order to ascertain their source of information.

“Imo is not on INEC’s official list of states guilty of fictitious registration of voters and INEC has not completed the Automated Biometric Verification of the system.

“The exercise must be concluded before an official voter register can be released to the public. It is therefore clear that Ugochinyere has either hacked into INEC server and doctored documents there or forged the document he was brandishing.

“Either way is criminal and it is important that he is immediately arrested for questioning,” the commissioner said.

Also reacting, the state Chairman of IPAC, Mr Levi Ekeh, said it was premature to make such allegation when INEC had yet to publish a cleaned up voter register for public scrutiny.

Ekeh said INEC had no doubt introduced a lot of innovations to allay peoples’ fear regarding the 2023 General Elections.

“We as a body commend their good efforts so far. At the same time, we caution them that Imo people, Nigerians and the entire world are watching them as unbiased umpires to deliver free, credible, fair and acceptable elections in 2023.

“In line with the Electoral Act, after the Automated Biometric Identification System and clean up, the commission shall display the voter register for seven days for the public to scrutinise and raise objections and complaints,” Ekeh said.

He said that the allegation by CUPP could only become an issue, if INEC failed to address the objections and complaints raised.

He said that INEC would publish the final register after treating the objections and complaints.

While recognising the rights of citizens to speak out in a democratic process, IPAC called for patience and understanding at this critical moment of the country’s electoral process.

Amid tight security, Buhari commissions projects in Imo

Amid tension after the Indigenous People of Biafra declared Tuesday as sit-at-home, President Muhammadu Buhari has inaugurated the recently reconstructed 36 Kilometres dualised Owerri-Orlu and the first phase of the 53 Kilometres dualised Owerri-Okigwe roads.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that President Buhari performed the inaugurations as part of his one-day working visit to the state, the second since September 2021 as residents of the State observed the sit-at-home order declared by the IPOB.

The President also inaugurated the reconstructed and refurbished Imo House of Assembly Complex in new Owerri, along Port-Harcourt road, Owerri.

Speaking in Amaraku, Isiala-Mbano Council Area, Buhari commended Gov. Hope Uzodimma for his quintessential efforts towards the development of critical infrastructure in Imo.

He called on Imo people to keep faith with the governor and promised support for the government and people of the state.

“I commend Gov. Hope Uzodimma for these wonderful projects and I do hope that it will improve movement of goods and services as well as positively impact the socio-economic activities of the state,’’ the president said.

Also, Gov. Uzodimma said that the two roads qualified as part of the best in Nigeria, adding that they would “remain signature projects” of his government.

He stressed the socio-economic potentials of the roads as “vital to the recovery of the state” and thanked the President for honouring the people of Imo with his visit.

“As part of our 3R mantra, we are recovering roads in Imo and by the grace of God and the continued support of President Muhammadu Buhari, Imo people will be happy that we served them.

“History is being made today. This is a clear indication of our commitment to development of infrastructure. God bless all of us and may God bless you, President Muhammadu Buhari,’’ he said.

It was, however, observed that despite the sit-at-home order by the IPOB, a mammoth crowd of residents and party faithful were present to receive Buhari.

In a statement on Saturday, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said IPOB was simply implementing an existing order to lock down Biafraland any day its leader would appear in court at Abuja.

The statement read in part, “The global family and movement of IPOB wishes to announce to the general public, especially Biafrans, that Tuesday, September 13, has been declared a day of civil action in the form of sit-at-home in Biafraland.

“Tuesday’s civil action is very important for two reasons: First, our leader’s Appeal Court hearing that was supposed to be on October 11 has been brought forward to September 13, 2022.”

However, Commissioner for Information and Strategy in the State, Declan Emelumba had declared the readiness of security operatives to ensure the President visited without glitches.

“Nobody can threaten Buhari. He is the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Imo is one of the states he governs and he is free to visit it. Security is in top gear and I can assure you that his visit will be successful,” the commissioner stated.

TNG reports that Buhari arrived in the State via the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport by 10.46 a.m. where he was received by Uzodimma and members of the State Executive Council.

He also inspected the military guard of honour and exchanged pleasantries with government officials before proceeding to Banana Junction, Orlu council area, on his first port of call.

  • Suspense as Buhari visits Imo to commission projects

Suspense as Buhari visits Imo to commission projects

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to visit Imo State today to commission some projects executed by the administration Hope Uzodinma.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, said the projects would boost the economic and social life of the state, adding that the state government spent billions to execute them.

Recall that Buhari paid an official visit to the state on Thursday, September 9, 2021, where he launched projects and had talks with Igbo leaders.

His second visit is expected to base “sundry matters but largely for the commissioning of completed projects by the 3R Government.”

Emelumba listed the projects as the first phase of the Owerri-Okigwe Road, the Owerri-Orlu Road and the rebuilt state House of Assembly complex.

However, the Indigenous People of Biafra declared Tuesday as sit-at-home over Buhari’s visit and in solidarity with its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who will appear in court.

In a statement on Saturday, the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said IPOB was simply implementing an existing order to lock down Biafraland any day its leader would appear in court at Abuja.

But Emelumba said security operatives were ready for Buhari’s visit to Imo State.

“Nobody can threaten Buhari. He is the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Imo is one of the states he governs and he is free to visit it. Security is in top gear and I can assure you that his visit will be successful,” the commissioner stated.

He noted that Buhari was visiting the state to inaugurate three signature projects executed by the Governor Hope Uzodimma administration.

Catholic Bishops has become the conscience of the nation – Uzodinma

Gov. Hope Uzodinma of Imo has said that catholic Bishops has become the conscience of the nation, speaking truth to power and seeking peaceful resolutions to burning issues.
Sen Uzodinma said this at the official opening ceremony of the second 2022 plenary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria(CBCN) in Orlu, Imo.
This is contained in a statement by Fr Mike Umoh, Director of Social Communication, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.
The Governor commended the  Catholic Bishops for unrelentingly providing resolutions to issues of national and global importance.
According to Uzodinma, one can rightly make the statement since 1958, when the CBCN was formed.
He said since then, it had become the conscience of the nation, speaking truth to power and seeking peaceful resolutions to burning issues.
Uzodinma commended the spirit of intensive prayer as outlined in the programme of the Conference.
The governor challenged the spiritual fathers not to only be seen to be praying for peace in the country, but to also be seen to be advocates of peace and unity in real life.
He further said  that the Bishops had a huge responsibility to contribute to national unity and progress.
Similarly, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr Ambrose Orjiakor, applauded the Catholic Bishops for having lived up to the expectation of shepherding and pastoring.
According to him, the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria, through the instrumentality of CBCN, have lived up to and exceeded expectations.
He made reference to St. John Paul’s book ‘Rise, let us be on our way’, which is a message to Bishops, and identified the symbolism of three things which Bishops wei adorned with.
He listed them as the Miter, the Croiser and the Pallium, explaining that the Miter symbolised that the Bishops represented the light on the mountain which everybody saw while living exemplary lives.
He added that the Croiser was a symbol of authority that represented natural care, responsibility and leadership.
He affirmed that the Catholic Bishops lived up to their responsibilities in all the areas enunciated in Pope John Paul’s book.
The Chairman  further said that the Bishops represented a very symbolic and robust institution through which the people of the country must have a voice.
He decried the current rising incidents of divorce in families and the escalating insecurity in the country.
The governor appealed to the Bishops to find a more collegial way to save the marriage institution.
He said this could be achieved by ensuring that marriage tribunals respected the institution of marriage and carefully handled issues around marriage.
With regards to insecurity, he praised the Bishops for the initiative of the prayer for Nigeria in distress and challenged them to do more.
Both speakers,(the governor and the chairman) did not fail to offer words of congratulations to the Bishop of Ekwulobia, Peter Cardinal Okpaleke who was recently elevated to cardinal.
They also congratulated  the new CBCN president and Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius  Ogorji.

Two Imo wedding guests freed by kidnappers

Kidnappers of wedding guests at Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State have freed two of the three victims after two weeks that they were declared missing.

The victims are Collins Alaefula, Mmadu Promise and Victor Chibuike.

Fortune said, Yes, my brother and one other have been released. They were released on Friday. It was actually a case of kidnap and not missing persons. I don’t know the name of the other person who was released alongside my brother. I have not seen them but I am on my way to where they are.’’

The victims who were in a Lexus 330 vehicle were declared missing on August 28 after they left a wedding in Isiala Mbano LGA to Owerri, their base.

After their whereabouts were not unknown, their families declared them missing and reported the situation at a police station in Owerri.

Their kidnappers were said to have contacted their families a few days after and demanded an undisclosed amount as ransom before they would release them.

TheNewsGuru.com could not ascertain the reason the third person was not freed.

Recall that two months ago, the Imo State youths held a protest over the killing of wedding guests.

  • 2023 Elections: APC ‘ll triumph in South-East – Uzodimma

2023 Elections: APC ‘ll triumph in South-East – Uzodimma

Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo state, says the All Progressives Congress (APC), will triumph in the South-East in the 2023 general election, because it is the only party with structures in all the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the country.

Uzodimma, also the Chairman of APC Presidential Campaign Council in the South-East, said this at a seminar organised by the party for its candidates in Owerri.

”APC is already winning and will win in the South-East because APC is the only political party that has party structure at the polling units and booths in all 774 LGAs of the country, “ he said.

Uzodimma said that the seminar was aimed at planning for a successful electioneering campaign for 2023 poll.
“The participants must carry others along as they cannot lead or win elections in isolation,” he said.

He said that the South-East has every cause to appreciate what President Muhammadu Buhari has done for the zone in his almost eight years as the President of Nigeria.

He listed the president’s achievements in the South-East to include the second Niger Bridge and the rehabilitation of the Federal Highways in the zone.

Others were the establishment of a Naval Base in Oguta LGA of Imo as well as the on-going reconstruction of 200 bed hospital at Imo University Teaching Hospital Orlu by NNPC, among others.

He cautioned members of the party against deceit by groups who often claim to support the South-East Presidency after they failed to support aspirants from the zone at the presidential primaries of the APC.

“The Igbo people have been a victim of mistaken identity. There is the need for the South-East to take their destiny in their own hands because if you don’t say I am, nobody will say you are,” he said.

Newsmen reports that the seminar was attended by executives and members of the APC across the South-East as well as present and former political office holders of the party.

Ebubeagu security personnel invade community, burn houses in Imo

Residents of Izombe community in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State are yet to recover from the palpable fear that engulfed them on Thursday night after security officers suspected to be of the Ebubeagu security outfit invaded the community and burnt many houses.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspects came to the village in multiple vehicles and started attacking people, burning houses and shops.

The development made members of the community to flee their homes, while the arsonists had a field day.

The reason for the arson was not ascertained but it may not be unconnected with the fracas between the security agency and some members of the community about a month ago which led the Ebubeagu officers to attack the community and raze shops and vehicles.

Several sources from the community who spoke to our correspondent said they had fled their homes.

Describing the damages as humongous, one of the indigenes called on the government to come to their rescue.

A cleric and one of the leaders of the community, Chinedu Nnadi, decried the activities of the Ebubeagu officers in their community.

“Where are our army general Kalu, Ifeobu, Eugine Dibiagwu? It is time to look at the governor’s face and tell him the truth.”
