IPOB denies attack on Police headquarters in Imo

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has distanced itself from Monday’s attacks on Police and Correctional Service headquarters in Imo.

Its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said in a statement issued in Owerri on Monday that the group was formed on the principle of peace and would not compromise its principles.

It would also not attack government’s facilities, he stated.

“The attention of IPOB has been drawn to the fallacious and fabricated reports that it is involved in the attack of prison and police headquarters in Imo.

“IPOB and Eastern Security Network (ESN) are known groups, not unknown gunmen. ESN is in the bush chasing terrorists and have no business with the said attacks.

“We were not involved in the attack in Owerri and the recent attack on Onitsha-Owerri road at Ukwuorji junction.

“It is not our mandate to attack security personnel or prison facilities,’’ he stated.

The headquarters of the Police in Imo as well as that of the Correctional Service were attacked at about 2 a.m. on Monday by unknown gunmen.

They set hundreds of inmates free from the Correctional Centre and set many vehicles there ablaze.

Meanwhile soldiers have been drafted to secure the Government House in Owerri. The troops already barricaded arterial roads to the facility.

Imo attack: Fish out perpetrators now – IGP orders reinforcement squads, CP

…set up special investigation team (SIT)

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), M. A. Adamu has ordered the immediate deployment of additional units of Police Mobile Force (PMF) and other Police Tactical Squads to Imo State.

This is to strengthen security in the State and prevent further attacks on security formations or any other critical national infrastructure in the State.

The IGP gave the directives following the attack on security operatives and formations including the Imo State Police Command Headquarters and the Headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS) in Owerri in the early hours of today, Monday, 5th April, 2021.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports this was contained in a statement issued by Force PRO CP, Frank Mbah.

According to the statement, peliminary investigations have revealed that the attackers, who came in their numbers with sophisticated weapons such as General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), Sub-Machine Guns (SMGs), AK49 rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), are members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The attempt by the attackers to gain access to the Police armoury at the Headquarters was totally and appropriately resisted by Police operatives on duty who repelled the attackers and prevented them from breaking-in and looting the armoury.

The armoury is thus intact! Similarly, the police suffered no human casualty, apart from a police Constable who sustained a minor bullet wound on his shoulder.

Meanwhile, one of the operational vehicles of the attackers has been recovered by the Police and is currently being subjected to forensic scrutiny and investigations.

The IGP, who condemned the attack on the security outfits, has further directed the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command and a new Special Investigation Team (specifically set up to deal with cases of incessant attacks on security formation/operatives in the region), to carry out holistic investigations into the incident with a view to fishing-out the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.

The CP is to harness the security reinforcement squads and other operational assets at his disposal to take the battle to the door-steps of the attackers and prevent any further attack anywhere within the State and its environs.

The IGP, who described the deliberate and criminal attack on security operatives as an attack on the soul of our nation, has enjoined leaders in Imo State, the South-East and other parts of the country to speak out against the unfolding violence and criminality.

The IGP calls on citizens to avail the Police and other security agencies with useful information that can assist in identifying and arresting the criminals.

He vowed that the perpetrators will be brought to book, noting that the Force is doing all within its powers to curb the activities of unscrupulous elements hell-bent on threatening the unity, safety, security and socio-ecomomic wellbeing of Nigerians.

“We have yet to confirm definite figures but we’ll make them public as soon as possible “, he said.

He, however, called on residents of the state to go about their lawful businesses, as according to him, the situation is under control.

TNG reports some gunmen on Monday attacked the Imo Police Command Headquarters and the Correctional Centre with explosives and freed some inmates.

The gunmen were said to have operated with no fewer than 10 vehicles at about 2 a.m. on Monday overpowering the security guards at the police command.

A source who wanted anonymity said no fewer than 150 suspects were released from the command in the process.

As at 9 a.m on Monday, military men and other security operatives barricaded Okigwe road where both the police command and the correctional center are situated.

A NAN reporter who was around the area at the filling of this report, observed that smoke was still coming out from the premises of the police command and the correctional centre as a result of the explosives

A security guard attached to Imo Government House, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the gunmen struck their targets with a dynamite.

“The military men that were contacted to save the situation were overpowered by the heavy weapons of the men cladded in black attire.

“They also burnt some vehicles parked at the entrance of the command headquarters,” he said.

The gunmen were also said to have danced and sung solidarity songs for more than 30 minutes before attacking the facilities.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the attacks.

He, however, assured the people of the state that the security agencies were on top of the matter.

According to him, only the State Criminal Investigation Department SCID session of the command headquarters are attacked by the gunmen.

  • Imo North Senatorial poll: Court orders INEC to issue Ararume certificate of return within 72 hours

Imo North Senatorial poll: Court orders INEC to issue Ararume certificate of return within 72 hours

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue Sen. Ifeanyi Ararume a certificate of return within 72 hours in the Dec. 5, 2020 Imo North Senatorial By-election, having been declared as the valid candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Justice Taiwo Taiwo, in a judgment, said Ararume remained the winner of the election going by the earlier judgments of the court.

According to him, with regard to the Appeal Court judgment in Abuja, the 3rd defendant (Chukwuma Ibezim) remained disqualified.

Justice Taiwo therefore declared Ararume as the APC valid candidate in the poll.

The judge earlier in a ruling dismissed Ibezim’s application seeking a stay of the judgment, pending the hearing and determination of the suit before the Supreme Court.

Justice Taiwo, who described the application as “an attempt to arrest the judgment,” dismissed it for lacking in merit.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ibezim and Araraume had fielded themselves as APC candidates prior to the election.

Although INEC had declared APC winner of the Dec. 5 Senatorial bye-election, the commission did not return a candidate from the party.

INEC hinged its decision on what it described as “several court orders” for and against the two major contenders.

NAN also reports that two court judgments had surfaced on Dec. 4, 2020; one from the Court of Appeal, Owerri, and another from the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The Court of Appeal faulted the judgment of the Federal High Court, Owerri, which had nullified the candidacy of Ibezim and declared him candidate while sacking Araraume barely 24 hours to the election.

The Federal High Court, Abuja, had on the other hand declared Araraume as candidate of the party, on the grounds that Ibezim presented fake certificates to the APC and INEC.

But Araraume, through his counsel, Ahmed Raji, SAN, said he had also filed an application at the Supreme Court, praying that the execution of the Appeal Court judgement be stayed.

As such, the former lawmaker approached Justice Taiwo’s court for an order compelling INEC to issue him the certificate of return as the winner of the poll.

Although the judgment would have been delivered on March 16 by Justice Taiwo, Ibezim, through his lawyer, M.O. Daudu, in an application for a stay of judgment, informed the court that the suit was pending before the apex court for hearing and determination.

But Counsel to Ararume, Tunde Falola, said the suit at the Supreme Court had been withdrawn through a notice of withdrawal and copies served on all the defendants.

  • Allow NDDC to operate – Uzodimma urges stakeholders

Allow NDDC to operate – Uzodimma urges stakeholders

Gov Hope Uzodinma of Imo has appealed to stakeholders to give room for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to work for the development of Nigeria’s oil-rich region.

The governor made the appeal during a courtesy visit by the NDDC Interim Administrator, Mr. Effiong Akwa, and his team of Directors at the Imo State Government House, Owerri on Tuesday.

This was contained in a press release signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Oguwike Nwachukwu.

Uzodimma lamented that in the years past, politics had hampered the progress of work by the NDDC, and urged Niger Deltans to de-emphasise politics and sentiments.

According to him, the NDDC is an interventionist agency established to fast-track development of the oil-producing region of the country and not an ethnic or tribal organization.

He warned those trying to portray it in that light to stop while regretting that some young people from the region were being sponsored to protest the activities of the NDDC

He appealed to them to allow peace to reign noting that development can only take place in a peaceful atmosphere.

Uzodimma also noted that Imo was in dire need of NDDC intervention in the education and health sectors, quality roads infrastructure and provision of sufficient palliatives.

He specifically implored the NDDC to furnish the hostel it built for the state university so that students could use the facility in comfort and safety.

The governor also lauded President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio on the choice of Akwa as the NDDC Interim Administrator pending the composition of a new board for the Commission.

“Since it is the wisdom of Mr President to put in place an Interim Administration, we are bound to respect his position and support the Interim Administrator.”

Earlier, the NDDC Interim Administrator, Mr Akwa said the visit was both to acknowledge the governor’s strategic importance to Niger Delta development and to seek ways of forging a stronger alliance with the government and people of Imo.

Akwa said the Interim Management was meeting with important stakeholders of the Niger Delta region as directed by President Buhari.

    The administrator said this was important because partnership was a key aspect in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);

“It advocates for a shared vision, shared responsibility, shared commitment, as well as shared budgeting process and implementation of development initiatives.

“After so many years of neglect, it is important that, together, we do far more for our people and a region which has provided the bulk of Nigeria’s wealth, and accounted for our rise in the comity of nations,” Akwa said.

He also commended the governor for embarking on many projects which were helping to open up areas with rich agricultural potential.

“You are helping to boost the economy of these areas and helping to improve the living conditions of the people. We are here to learn from you,” he said.

The NDDC boss stressed the importance of energising the commission’s Presidential Advisory Council, comprising the state governors in the nine Niger Delta states.

“The past practice where the commission undertook projects and programmes in the states, without first building a working coalition with the state governments, to integrate our plans, policies, projects and programmes into the state government’s overall master plan, will no longer hold.

“We are determined to continue to make a difference in the Niger Delta region in general, and in Imo State, in particular.

“We remain committed to providing projects and programmes of enduring quality because to build the Niger Delta is to build ourselves,” he said.

The Interim Management team handed over four waste disposal trucks to the Imo State Government to assist the efforts towards improving the sanitary conditions of the cities in the state.

South East Governors wade into Imo gov’t, Okorocha tug-of-war

The South-East Governors Forum has waded into the impasse between the Imo government and the state’s former governor, Sen. Rochas Okorocha.

Recall that a squabble ensued between both sides’ supporters on Feb. 21 when Okorocha allegedly broke into the Royal Spring Palm Apartment, Owerri, sealed by the Imo government on Feb. 19.

The situation was brought under control by the Imo Police Command, which later arrested the senator.

Chairman of the forum, Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi, in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Francis Nwaze on Monday said that the forum was already handling the issue.

Umahi said that contacts have already been made to resolve the impasse and assured that both parties have agreed to a truce.

“South-east leaders are capable of settling their disputes internally instead of washing their linen in public.

“We sue for calm among the supporters of both leaders to ensure a timely and amicable resolution of the disagreement,’’ the statement read.

The forum’s chairman urged Imo and south-east citizens to conduct their business peacefully and according to the law.

“They should also shun provocative statements as we work towards restoring normalcy to the situation.’’
