The seeming tug-of-war brewing between former Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and incumbent, Hope Uzodinma has assumed a new dimension.

Uzodinma had sealed Royal Spring Palm belonging to Okorocha, but the former Governor, who is a sitting Senator, stormed the property on Sunday to unseal the premises.

Okorocha was accompanied by his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu and several of his loyalists in the move to unseal the property.

On arrival at the property, he demanded to enter the estate, telling the security personnel guarding the place that there was no court order to back up the sealing of the building.

Hence, he insisted on entering the building, which he eventually did after the locks were broken by his men.

Gunshots started when two of Uzodinma’s aides, Chinasa Nwaneri and Eric Uwakwe arrived at the place with another group of police officers and young men.

Open confrontation followed, leading to sporadic shooting and one of Okorocha’s men got hit by a bullet.

  • Imo North Senatorial by-election: PDP urges INEC to nullify APC’s participation

Imo North Senatorial by-election: PDP urges INEC to nullify APC’s participation

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to nullify the participation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Dec. 5 Imo North Senatorial by-election due to conflicting court orders.

The PDP candidate in the election, Mr Emmanuel Okewulonu, made the call on Monday in Owerri, while speaking with newsmen on the subsisting court orders.

Okewulonu argued that the country’s electoral Act does not allow a political party to contest an election without a valid candidate.

He, therefore, called on INEC to declare PDP, which garnered the second highest number of votes, the winner of the election.

He further said that two different court orders also invalidated the candidacy of two APC flagbearers, Ifeanyi Ibezim and Ifeanyi Araraume, barely 24 hours to the election.

The PDP candidate contended that the development left APC without a candidate for the poll.

He further argued that, in line with extant laws, a political party should be disqualified from participating in an election “in the event that it presents more than one candidate for the same election”.

He said: “Since two different courts of competition jurisdiction have disqualified the two major contenders from APC, it means that the party has no candidate and is therefore disqualified from participating in the election.

“If the political party claims to have two candidates going into the election, that still disqualifies the party and we must be able to uphold the sanctity of the judiciary.

“We hereby call on INEC to disqualify APC on these grounds and declare PDP winner of the by-election, in line with the electoral Act as amended.”

Okewulonu thanked the electorate for turning out en masse to cast their votes and promised to offer quality representation, if eventually returned as winner of the election.

Also, the state PDP Chairman, Mr Charles Ugwu, said the party would not allow what he described as a “rape of democracy” to stand.

He further said that PDP would employ all constitutional means available to seek redress until justice had been served.

It will be recalled that the Court of Appeal had declared Ibezim the rightful candidate of APC, thus nullifying an earlier judgement of the Federal High Court, Owerri, which invalidated his candidacy.

The court also sacked Araraume from contesting barely 24 hours to the election.

On the other hand, the Federal High Court, Abuja had declared Araraume as candidate of the party on the grounds that Ibezim presented fake certificates to APC and INEC.

  • BREAKING: Without candidate, APC wins Imo North bye-election

BREAKING: Without candidate, APC wins Imo North bye-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the December 5 Imo North senatorial by-election.

Announcing the result, the returning officer, Mr Hakeem Adikum, said that the APC polled a total of 36, 811 votes, while PDP came second with 31,903 votes.

However, the commission did not return a candidate from the party.

Adikum said APC won in five out of six Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the senatorial district while the PDP came second having won only in Obowo LGA.

He declared that the LGAs won by the APC are Okigwe, Onuimo, Isiala Mbano, Ehime Mbano, and Ihitte Uboma.

“I hereby return the All Progressive Congress as the winner of the by-election held in Imo North on Saturday, Dec. 5,” he said.

Speaking, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Imo, Prof. Francis Ezeonu said that the commission was unable to return a candidate from the APC as winner.

He explained that this was as a result of what he described as “several Court orders” for and against the two major contenders, Frank Ibezim and Ifeanyi Araraume, a former senator.

He said that two Court judgments had surfaced on Friday, one from the Court of Appeal, Owerri, and another from the Federal High Court, Abuja.

It will be recalled that the Court of Appeal faulted the judgment of the Federal High Court, Owerri, which had nullified the candidacy of Ibezim and declared him candidate while sacking Araraume barely 24 hours to the election.

The Federal High Court, Abuja had on the other hand declared Araraume as candidate of the party, on the grounds that Ibezim presented fake certificates to the APC and INEC.
