Police arrest ‘wanted’ IPOB/ESN terrorist in Imo

The Police Command in Imo on Tuesday, said it had arrested a suspected terrorist, who has been on its wanted list for long.

The command’s spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye, said the suspect, Chidebere Nwuzor, 38, is a notorious member of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed group of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Nwuzor, who hails from Amauzu in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of the state, was arrested by Operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit following “a diligently gathered actionable intelligence”.

“The suspected terrorist has been on the command’s wanted list due to series of terrorist activities he reputedly perpetrated in the state alongside his criminal cohorts.

“He was arrested on April 8, 2024, in his criminal hideout in Umuogu after a fierce gunfight with the ever-gallant operatives, which forced him to surrender after sustaining gunshot injuries on his right leg,” Okoye said.

The police spokesman said one pump action gun with six rounds of live cartridges, one barrera pistol loaded with two rounds of live ammunition, and other incriminating items were recovered from the suspect.

He said on interrogation, the suspect confessed to being a member of the deadly IPOB/ESN syndicate responsible for enforcing the unlawful sit-at-home order in the state and unleashing mayhem on unsuspecting citizens.

The spokesman stated that the suspect was recuited into the deadly terrorist group by Ebube Virus and Ishaka, who were earlier neutralized by the operatives in December 2023.

“The suspect admitted that he drove the operation vehicle that was used in the attack that led to the killing of the DPO of Ahaizu Mbaise and an Inspector of Police in November 2023.

“The suspect is currently assisting the determined operatives in the investigation and he has provided useful information that will lead to the arrest of other suspects at large,” he added.

Okoye assured that the suspect would be prosecuted after full investigation.

“This operational feat amongst many others underscores the command’s unalloyed determination to put an end to all forms of violent crimes in the state.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, assures the good people of Imo that the command will not relent in its unwavering commitment to clamp down on criminally minded element in the state,” he added.

  • Digital language for Imo youths – By Okoh Aihe

Digital language for Imo youths – By Okoh Aihe

When I was much younger, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late political sage, in a moment of political flamboyance and philosophical exactitude, had said life was a “continuum.” It was the time children still rush to their dictionaries searching for words that could build up their vocabularies.

Oh could he be talking about life stretching into the future indeterminately and without any break or what some may call interregnum? Vocabulary! Young men of yore liked to acquire them and throw them around like bullets by way of demonstrating their bombastic grammatical acquisition.

Growing up, sustainability has joined my little collection. In language there is always something for the age. Sustainable development goals could be appropriated now by the United Nations, but my little flirtation with the word is more of project, programme or policy development, nurtured or supported to endure the vicissitudes of a fragile state. Unlike in politics where the winner takes all and everything comes to a screeching, shameful halt once he exits office. Or in moments of interregnum!

Could this be the reason I was excited last week seeing some images coming out of Imo State? It was quite exciting for me to see that the SkillUpImo project has not been subjected to the opprobrium of an interregnum or endure a crushing hiatus that could have a telling effect on a well thought-out programme with which Governor Hope Uzodinma hopes to lure a number of youths away from the streets and crime, and imbue them with tech skills for a better future, even for a better state and country.

In Imo State, interregnum has lost meaning or relevance. While yet to form a cabinet after an election victory, Governor Uzodinma, secured the partnership of global tech giant, Meta Incorporated, formerly Facebook, to train 5000 tech graduates on digital marketing on Meta social platforms of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, still using the enthusiastic commitment of former Commissioner of Digital Economy and E-Governance, Dr Chimezie Amadi.

That is sustainability, that the importance of a cardinal programme of the State government was not allowed to flag. An official of the Nigerian tech partner of Meta, Innovation Growth (IG) Hub, Daniel Chinagozi,  told reporters that the training was one of the series lined up to support the government in its audacious effort to decongest the streets of restless youths and give them a meaningful living.

The governor in his first tenure promoted an ambitious Imo Digital Economy Agenda (IDEA) 2022 – 2026, with one of its primary pillars being Digital Literacy and Skills Acquisition. Under the programme, the government planned to train 100,000 youths, women and people living with disabilities in core 21st century skills in software development, blockchain, game development and other technical vocational skills.

A smart move by the governor was to enlist Dr Amadi, a hard core technocrat at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to champion his vision for a new Imo.

It was like hitting the bullseye. Perhaps for the visible achievements of the programme and even more for the love of his people, the governor has encouraged

Amadi to pursue his state’s tech vision even in ordinary capacity.

The efforts of the state in this respect are measurable. The training programme provided Amadi with an auspicious opportunity to give a situation report. Speaking on Channels Television, last week, Amadi informed viewers that through the SkillUpImo project which is about a year old, the governor has trained exactly 20,000 youths in Cohorts 1 and  2 in different genres of tech application, out of  which 5,000 were picked for further training by tech partners, IG Hub, representing Meta in Nigeria.

On the choice of Meta, Amadi explained that the company builds its innovation around people and some of these technologies are specially suited for the promotion of MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), the sort of small businesses sprouting in different parts of the state, a number of them promoted by tech graduates of the ImoSkillUp project.

“Meta through IG Hub is working with us to train digital marketing graduates from Cohort 1 and 2 by sharpening their knowledge and deepening their skills in using the Meta family of Apps to promote small businesses. Some of them have opted to set up their own ventures instead of searching for paid employment,” he said.

Some benefits are already very noticeable, according to the former Commissioner. “The good thing happening in Imo is the sporadic growth of small businesses. Some companies come to Imo State in search of tech  talents to employ. Imo State is becoming a net exporter of tech talents to other parts of the country and even to the global community,” Amadi said.

Until recently, Imo State resonated mostly in ugly situations, either insecurity or mugging of Labour leaders. The governor has said his tech training drive for the youths is to stir them away from being cheap recruits for troublemakers. And Amadi would tell this writer that there is nobody who is gainfully employed that will want to spill his blood on the street.

Does Uzodinma’s tech plan have the fuel boosters to accelerate to 2026 and achieve its goals without political distractions?  Will it achieve its training target of 100,000  and make Imo a digitally driven state – E-Government, connected ministries, connected cities, driven on e-commerce that is powered by a state supported broadband buildout? Time, they say, will tell.

From afar, one can say Governor Uzodinma has got something good going in Imo State. On tech training for Imo youths, he has scaled the rubicon while shaming a discouraging interregnum offered by the absence of a cabinet, to press the accelerator of his best offering to the Imo people.

He advised members of the public to avail police sensitive information that could aid them to arrest criminals, as well as secure and safeguard the state.

Okoye urged the public to either go to their closest Divisional Police Officer (DPO), the Area Commanders or Commanders of the Tactical Teams.

He also availed the following numbers: command room – 08034773600; and the Complaints Response Unit- 07067419738, for emergencies.

  • Gov Uzodimma dissolves cabinet

    Gov Uzodimma dissolves cabinet

Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo has dissolved the State expanded executive council members following the commencement of his second tenure in office on Monday.

Addressing them at the Government House in Owerri on Tuesday, the governor, who said the dissolution was with immediate effect, explained that his decision was in tandem with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Those affected by the dissolution include all Commissioners, Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants.

Also affected were the Sole Administrators (SolAds) of the 27 local government areas of the state.

The Governor, however, commended them for their support and contribution that led to the success of the Nov. 11, 2023, governorship election in the state and his subsequent inauguration into office for a second term.

Uzodimma said it was because of their support that his administration commenced the dredging of Orashi River, rehabilitation of public schools, established digital economy and completed highway road projects, among other projects.

“This second tenure will offer us the needed opportunity to consolidate on the solid foundation put in place.

“I want to remind you that whether you will be directly involved in the new dispensation or tangentially involved, wherever you are, you will be proud to have been part of this government,” he said.

He promised to ensure a symbiotic relationship with them in the second tenure, saying “we have become a family – politically, economically or otherwise”.

Uzodimma emphasised that the war against insecurity would be intensified in the second tenure.

According to him, the second tenure in office is for us to leave a legacy and do things that we will be remembered for.

“It is for us to really and completely build a new Imo state,” he added.

The Governor appealed to them to appreciate his limitations as human by not being able to meet up to their expectations, and promised that he will strive harder in the new dispensation to do better.

He further promised that he would accommodate those of them who distinguished themselves in their service during his first term in the new cabinet, which will be constituted soon.

The Governor reminded them that political appointees are expected to live above board and should guard against corrupt practices, looting of public funds and assets, and other sharp practices.

  • Better days ahead – Tinubu reassures Nigerians as Uzodimma begins 2nd tenure

Better days ahead – Tinubu reassures Nigerians as Uzodimma begins 2nd tenure

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, assured Nigerians that things would get better for the common good of the people with more patience, perseverance and consistency in governance.

Tinubu gave the assurance at a colourful and well-attended ceremony for the inauguration of Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo for a second term in office held at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.

Tinubu, who earlier commissioned a road leading to the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, appealed to the people to endure the hardship occasioned by the subsidy removal.

He congratulated the people of the state on their resolve to vote Uzodimma, whom he described as “a very unique individual that resonates with a progressive agenda”.

“I assure you here today that you have gotten a good and dependable democrat, a hardworking man, who will think and do,” he said.

The president urged Uzodimma to make further commitment towards economic recovery and rapid development of the state.

“Before now, every one of us was enveloped with fear to come to Imo. Today, Imo is safe and happy and ready for business.

“What we learnt from this is for us to work together, join hands and pay attention to our internal security,” Tinubu said.

He promised more robust collaborations between the Federal and Imo Governments in the area of security.

Earlier in a remark after taking the oath of office at exactly 3:22p.m., Uzodimma commended the people for their love and support during the governorship election of November 11, 2023.

He said his oath taking for his second term was a renewal of his covenant with God and the good people of the state.

The governor said that the past four years had been characterised by good management of public funds that had addressed the problem of infrastructure deficit.

“Through the provision of extensive road infrastructure, we have been able to lay a solid foundation for the accelerated economic growth and development of our state,” he said.

According to him, the next four years of my administration will, therefore, focus firmly on deepening our shared prosperity mantra through massive infrastructure expansion to ensure accelerated economic growth.

“I have already signalled this new direction in the 2024 budget in which capital expenditure has the lion share of 491.2 billion naira of the total budget of 591.2 billion naira or 83 per cent of the budget.

“This transformational journey, which we have commenced with the 2024 budget, will be sustained in the next four years,” he further said.

The governor also said that his vision will be anchored on 10-year Development Plan that would transform the state into an industrial, self-sufficient state in the next ten years.

He said the 10-year development plan was also designed to deepen the intervention framework of his 3R mantra of Recovery, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction.

Uzodimma said the development plan identified priority sectors that would accelerate projects and industries, such as the Orashi Free Trade Zone and supporting businesses, such as petrochemical industries and gas processing facilities.

He said: “Another focus of the plan is to harness our agricultural potentials and exploit the mineral resources and align them to the proposed establishment of ceramic industry and agro processing facilities across the three senatorial districts of the state.

“My second tenure will be centred on the massive economic development of the state, which will permeate every community or ward.

“We shall kick start this through our Community Economic Development Initiative.

“Consequently, within the first 12 months of the current tenure, every community in the state will feel the impact with at least one significant project fully executed for them.

“Consequently, in the coming weeks, working with the local government council leadership, each community will be expected to identify one project that they want the government to do for them,” he said.

The governor reassured the workers that prompt payment of salaries and pensions would remain a priority to the administration.

He said his priority areas will be on 15 critical sectors needed for the sustainable development of Imo, including road infrastructure, education, health, sanitation, water supply, agriculture and food security.

Others are housing and new cities development, digital infrastructure, market access, industrial policy, safety/security, enabling laws and policies, public financial management and electricity infrastructure.

He called on aggrieved Imo people to bury their differences and work collectively to develop the state.

“Our simple civic obligations, like paying taxes, observing traffic rules and keeping our environment clean can go a long way toward helping the government to succeed.

“In the same vain, I urge all those with the wherewithal to think of establishing industries, especially in the rural areas, to help create jobs for the youths,” Uzodimma said.

Chief Judge of Imo, Justice Theresa Chikeka, administered the oath of office on the governor and his deputy, Mrs Chinyere Ekomearu.

Until her election as deputy governor, Ekomearu, who replaced Prof. Placid Njoku, was a Senior Lecturer at the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri.

The ceremony was attended by eminent Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, Speaker, House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, some state governors, the clergy and traditional rulers, among others.

  • Supreme Court slams Ozekhome N40m fine over Imo governorship tussle

Supreme Court slams Ozekhome N40m fine over Imo governorship tussle

The Supreme Court on Tuesday imposed a fine of N40M on human rights activists and Constitutional lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome for filing frivolous motion before the court in respect of Imo Governorship tussle decided since 2019.

In a ruling by Justice Tijani Abubakar, he ordered the Senior lawyer to personally pay the N40M fine to the four respondents he dragged before the court.

Abubakar held in the ruling that the request was strange, frivolous, baseless, unwarranted, vexatious and irritating.

He further held that the motion was a calculated design to demonize the Supreme Court.

Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN called to the Nigerian Bar over 42 years ago was fined the huge amount for bringing a motion before the Apex Court seeking to revalidate the suit that removed Emeka Ihedioha as Governor of Imo State in 2019.

Those to be paid are the Action People’s Party, APP, Uche Nnadi, Uche Nwosu and the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.

In the motion considered to be frivolous by the court, Ozekhome had asked the Court for a consequential order to compel INEC to issue a fresh Certificate of Return to Ihedioha to enable him spend a four year tenure as Imo Governor.

His grouse was that the incumbent governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma unlawfully spent the four years which Ihedioha ought to spend.

Among others, Ozekhome in the motion claimed that the All Progressives Congress APC had no candidate in the 2019 Imo Governorship election, hence, Uzodinmma ought not to have been made governor on the platform of APC.

However, the apex court dismissed the motion on the ground that it has no jurisdiction to entertain such a motion.

  • Labour Party denies inspecting Imo election materials

Labour Party denies inspecting Imo election materials

The Labour Party (LP) in Imo, on Tuesday, said it was not involved in the inspection of election materials conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo.

INEC displayed the materials for inspection in its headquarters in Owerri on Tuesday.

The materials were displayed in obedience to a court order obtained by the LP for the inspection of Certified True Copies of documents and other materials used for the governorship election on November 11.

Applications for the inspection of the materials were submitted to INEC by the LP, PDP, APGA and YPP.

Addressing newsmen, state LP Chairman, Mr Callistus Ihejiagwa, faulted the process of the inspection, pointing out that the parties had yet to agree on the modalities for the inspection.

Ihejiagwa expressed disappointment that although the LP had got a court order mandating INEC to make the materials available for inspection, the party could not proceed with the process as there were no agreed rules and modalities.

He distanced the party from “the flawed process”, and berated INEC for “falling below expectations“.

According to him, there was no agreed formular for the inspection.

“We are here at the behest of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Owerri, which granted us an Order of Court to inspect the materials used for the November 11 governorship election.

“INEC failed to establish modalities for the inspection as agreed and we cannot afford to proceed with the process.

“At the moment, INEC has not told us which materials they have made available for inspection.

“As far as we are concerned, there’s no inspection going on here today,” he said.

The lawyer representing PDP, Mr Gozie Nwachukwu, described the environment and process as “disorganised, devoid of meaningful logic and not fit to serve its intended purpose“.

Nwachukwu called on INEC to reorganise itself with a view to carrying out the process in a more decent fashion so that all the stakeholders can go home satisfied.

The INEC Head of Voter Education and Publicity in the state, Mrs Emmanuella Ben-Opara, had earlier confirmed that the materials requested for inspection were all ready and waiting to be inspected.

The inspection venue was however crowded by supporters of the All Progressives Congress, who chanted solidarity songs intermittently.
