Ajaero attack: Organised Labour to withdraw services in Imo

The organised labour has called for immediate withdrawal of services by its members in lmo state from midnight Nov. 7.

The directive is to protest the recent brutalisation of the President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Joe Ajaero.

Mr Festus Osifo, President, Trade Union Congress (TUC) said this at the end of a joint emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting with the NLC on Tuesday in Abuja.

Osifo said that the NEC-in-session unanimously condemned in strong terms the alleged ”brutalisation and beastly actions” of Gov. Hope Uzodimma, his goons and the Nigeria Police on Ajaero.

He said that the NLC president had led workers to examine, protest the non payment of salary of some of the workers in Imo.

He said that Ajaero was also there to protect the declaration of ghost workers, who actually go to work and other several issues that had bedeviled workers in the state.

According to him, we went there without guns, a single machete but only to protest. Protest is something that is in the law, It’s a fundamental position that is purely guided by our constitution.

“It is guided by International Charter, that is guided by the ILO Convention but unfortunately, Hope Uzodimma organised the police and thought to attack the Nigerian worker.

“Consequently, the NLC/TUC NEC-in-session resolved to order the immediate withdrawal of services and shutdown of Imo state beginning midnight today.

“All workers and affiliates are expected to ensure compliance from wherever they are. All flights into and out of Imo state, fuel supplies and electricity be stopped immediately as applicable.

“All public and private sector workers are to immediately down tools indefinitely,” he said.

Osifo added that, if our demands are still unmet, workers all over the federation shall join in withdrawing their services by midnight Tuesday, the 14th of November. 2023.

He also urged all state councils of NLC and TUC and affiliates that by the resolution mandated to ensure full compliance with NEC’s decision.

It would be recalled that Ajaero was attacked in Imo on Nov. 1, after declaring a protest against the governor of the state over alleged anti-labour practices.

Reports claimed that he was later detained by the Police, but the Police denied that they brought him under their custody to save him from further attack by hoodlums.

Governorship election: Imo hoteliers deny facilities fully booked

Contrary to a leaked memo that has circulated widely, the Imo Hoteliers Association has denied hotels in Owerri, the Imo State capital are fully booked and paid for.

The association’s Chairman, Mr Chima Chukwunyere, who disclosed this while addressing newsmen in Owerri on Monday, added that their facilities are open for prospective customers.

Recall a leaked memo, dated October 25, purportedly signed by the Imo Commissioner for Tourism, Mr Jerry Egemba, has been trending in the media, generating diverse public reactions.

The memo requested hotel owners in Owerri to make their facilities available for rent by the State Government from November 4 to November 11, for the governorship election date.

Chukwunyere described the memo as “debilitating to the welfare of the hotel business in Imo”.

According to him, customers are no longer patronising hotels in the State since Saturday, November 4, out of the assumption that they had all been rented out and paid for.

“Sometime last week, there was a letter from the State Government to Directors and General Managers of hotels in the state requesting for reservation of all hotel rooms of all categories from November 4 to November 12.

“Captains of the hotel industry gladly received the information because for hotels to have full occupancy for such number of days means a miracle from God, which has never happened before and hotels have never received 60 per cent occupancy for a long time.

“But nothing has happened since then and customers are growing increasingly apprehensive about patronising us.

“We wish to state that all hotels operating in Imo are open for business. We, therefore, call on our customers to continue to patronise the industry,“ Chukwunyere said.

He further called on the State Government to cushion the effect of the financial loss on the part of hoteliers brought about by the memo by injecting funds into the tourism industry and also giving them tax rebate.

Industrial action throws entire Imo into darkness

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), says the loss of electricity supply in the entire Imo is as a result of the industrial action by the organised labour union in the state.

This is contained in a statement issued by the EEDC’s Head, Corporate Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh, on Thursday in Enugu.

“EEDC wishes to inform its esteemed customers in Imo State that the loss of supply currently being experienced follows the industrial action by  organised labour union in Imo State.

“This led to the union shutting down our source of supply at Egbu Transmission Station, leaving us with no energy to distribute to our customers.

“As a result of this development, the whole of Imo State is without electricity supply,” he said.

According to him, “we appreciate the inconveniences this situation must have caused our customers, and we hope that the issue will be resolved soon,” he said.

The EEDC spokesman, however, assured the good people of Imo that the company is on standby to restore supply once the industrial action is called off.

JUST IN: NLC President Ajaero Interfered in Imo Politics – Uzodimma

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has broken silence on the brutal attack on Joe Ajaero, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) president, during a union protest in the state.

Ajaero was arrested by the Imo State Police Command on Wednesday while leading a protest in the state capital, Owerri.

However, the police said he was only “rescued from a mob and put in protective custody.”

Reacting, the governor has accused Ajaero of interfering in the state’s politics.

Uzodimma made the accusation on Thursday after receiving the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag from President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

“The National President of the NLC is from Imo State and has not been able to demarcate the difference between being a national leader of an organisation and then an interested party in local politics,” Uzodimma said.

The governor’s accusation comes after the NLC accused him of conspiring with the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Barde, to “abduct” Ajaero.

Ohanaeze reacts as Gov. Uzodimma offers amnesty to unknown gunmen

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has hailed Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, for offering amnesty to all the unknown gunmen hiding in the bush as a way of curtailing insecurity in the state.

The group gave the commendation in a statement issued by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, on Thursday in Enugu.

Ogbonnia said the decision was reached at a meeting of selected leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Northern Zone, held on Tuesday at the residence of the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

According to Ogbonnia, Uzodimma has promised to offer full employment to all youths who denounce nefarious activities in Imo State.

“It is hoped that since Uzodimma, the Chairman of the South East Governors Forum, had done this, all the other South-East Governors will key into the Amnesty programme,” he said.

He stated that Igbo leaders have urged the young men in the region to take advantage of the amnesty programme for peace to reign in Igboland.

Ogbonnia added that the meeting expressed very deep concern over the insecurity in the South East and felt sad over the continued incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“The President General was, therefore, mandated to immediately seek appointment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with a view to negotiating the release of Kanu, amongst other security issues in the South East,” Ogbonnia said.

He further said that Igbo leaders had pledged to build an International Market in Igboland, adding that with the completion of the project, all the Igbo traders would be expected to own a market store in Igboland.

This, he said, would create job opportunities, enhance goods and services and ultimately increase Gross Domestic Product in the country.

“As a corollary to this, Igbo Leader will hold a summit of Igbo Traders Associations in Nigeria and some parts of Africa,” he said.

Ogbonnia explained that Iwuanyanwu had also announced the establishment of a Special Committee, known as the “Committee for Reconciliation and Peace Building in Nigeria” with Dr Dominic Okechukwu as the Chairman while Dr. Joseph Ibekwe will be the Secretary.

He said the other members of the Committee would be announced later, adding that the president general had inaugurated the Elders Council for Abuja and the Northern States of Nigeria.

“The Council is Chaired by Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife with Chief S.N. Okeke as the Deputy while Prof. Charles Nwekeaku was named Secretary.

The publicity secretary said members of the meeting lauded the robust initiatives so far taken by Iwuanyanwu, since his assumption of Office as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

This, he said, was more pronounced in the areas of peace building, transportation, railway, seaport, international airport and other areas of strategic interests to Igbos.

According to him, members expressed immense delight that with the Iwuanyanwu vision, intellect and invaluable diverse contacts, a lot of lost grounds will be recovered.

  • Why PDP BoT wants immediate resignation of Imo guber candidate

Why PDP BoT wants immediate resignation of Imo guber candidate

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the immediate resignation of the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Anyanwu, who doubles as the PDP’s governorship candidate in next month’s election in Imo State, risks disqualification from the poll.

The Acting Chairman of the BoT, Senator Adolphus Wabara, conveyed the decision of the organ to the Acting National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagun, in an October 12, 2023 letter.

The BoT accused Anyanwu of constitutional breach by holding the office of the National Secretary and hanging on to  the governorship ticket of the party at the same time.

While the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party insisted Anyanwu should remain in office, the BoT described Anyanwu’s action as morally wrong.

The letter reads: “It has recently come to the attention of the Board of Trustees (BoT) that the current Imo State Gubernatorial Candidate of our Party, Sen. Anyanwu is still holding on to the Office of the National Secretary of the party.

“Not only is this morally wrong as no one is allowed to hold dual positions; but also, against the constitutional provision of our Party which provides for a mandatory requirement of resignation for any party office holder who wishes to contest any elective position. Please see section 47(5) of our constitution as amended.

“The usual practice is for him to have resigned earlier than now. However, in the wisdom of the NWC, he was allowed to continue in office till now.

“Nonetheless, the BoT, as the conscience of the party, has the constitutional authority to call to order any member of the party acting in a way contrary to the guiding principles of our party, and this is one of them.”

The BoT asked the National Chairman and the NWC to ensure immediate resignation of Anyanwu.

It said: “It is therefore against the background of the above, the Board wishes to put it on record and state categorically that the NWC should do the right thing by ensuring that the Imo Gubernatorial Candidate resigns from office immediately and focus on the election which is less than 30 days away.

“While thanking you for your unwavering support and commitment to the party, please accept the assurances of my highest regards.”

  • In Imo State, a beautiful tech programme attracts a berating – By Okoh Aihe

In Imo State, a beautiful tech programme attracts a berating – By Okoh Aihe

I watched the Tech Walk in Imo State last week and was obviously elated as the mass of young people headed to the government house for a celebratory rendezvous with the Governor, Hope Uzodinma. My excitement derived from the fact that a seemingly young project which began about a year ago has gotten so much traction with the targeted population to the point that it is almost becoming a movement. A digital army is being created and the young men and women are only so proud and willing to wear the digital code as apparel.

I was privileged to see the concept papers for The Digital Imo Agenda and, at the time, one could only wish the young Commissioner, Dr Chimezie Paulinus Amadi, well in his efforts to introduce a new narrative to a state that was understandably deficit in public image.

Good ideas can be very commonplace sometimes, but planning and execution could be in the precincts of rocket science. The idea of The Digital Imo Agenda wasn’t new at all, much like what has been implemented in some other parts of the world, to give their youths a reason to live. Somebody needed to spin something new in a nation where university students could be at home for one year because government would not settle industrial dispute with the lecturers, where those who graduated have no jobs and have turned to weapons in the hands of manipulative politicians and, in fact, in an environment where being a young child growing up has become nearly a curse. A reasonable mind needed to give meaning to such young minds trampled into the ground by wicked hearts.

One of the primary pillars of The Digital Imo Agenda is the SkillUpImo Project which, in three years, is ambitiously aimed at training and equipping 300,000 people with digital skills and knowledge, get them off the streets to be more useful to themselves and the society.

Such youths will be trained in the fields of Computer Appreciation, Data Analytics, UI/UX, Web Design, Digital Marketing, Content creation, Phone Repairs, Video Editing, Programming and a host of other fields of digital appreciation. The graduates of such training will not only be able to function within our borders but will be knowledgeable enough to work remotely in other parts of the word.

The students are trained in Cohorts or tranches, if you prefer the latter word. Cohort One graduated 5,000 on February 22, 2023. Last week, September 27, 2023, to be precise, Cohort Two graduated a whopping 15, 000, bringing the total figures to 20, 000.

The programme isn’t doing badly at all. Coming from a very poor background, I know the colour of hope. That very day, I could see hope walking on the streets of Imo as they marched towards the governor’s office. TV images can  also tell the story of hope which is in short supply in our nation as poverty bestrides the environment like a demonic colossus while the Naira cringes before other international currencies. Life is degraded so massively that only those with sincere relationship with the ordinary folks, can relate the horror story that life in Nigeria has become.

Then it happened. Governor Uzodinma, in a euphoric moment of political orgy, told his appreciatively delirious youths that jobs have been secured for as many as 4000 of them with the European Union, and then in Canada and other parts of the world.  By December he will enjoy the honour of handing out the appointment letters by himself. The politician in Uzodinman has spoken. The ecstasy at that moment was overwhelming in the extreme.

The young souls before him only hunger for the best and anything could stand for truth and the possible, especially if it is coming from a political leader.

But the world outside was aghast, unable to understand why the governor that should be the one creating jobs and retaining talents should be the one organizing their departure. I have watched on television the sandbagging and flagellation of the governor and my sympathy for him is slim, for the simple reason that I feel pained that such a beautiful moment has been drowned in an ill-timed political exhilaration.

Beyond that political ballyhoo, has the governor done well with The Digital Imo Agenda? Before providing an answer I want to ask another question, why is it difficult for our politicians to work quietly and let the results speak for them? Some other countries of the world allow the results to do the talking.

May 25, 1961, President J.F. Kennedy delivered his Man on the Moon speech at a joint session of the Congress, where he challenged his country to land a man on the moon within a decade. The idea was not the subject of politics. By July 20, 1969, after spending about $28bn ($283bn in today’s inflation) with over 400, 000 people working on the Apollo project, America’s Apollo 11 landed three men on the moon – Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins. Armstrong became the first man ever to walk on the moon. They left a message on the moon: ‘’Here men from planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.’’

At some point, China felt overlooked and underestimated by the rest of the world and went insular to build capacity and technology. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China exhibited its wares to the rest of the world that has not stopped asking for more. China is antagonized for being a clear leader in 5G technology. This was not the subject of politics.

India contemplated the poverty of its people and decided to build a health sector that could take care of the ordinary folks. The country built up a modern health sector which could handle a major heart surgery for a cost less than $10, 000, and inadvertently built up a health tourism sector for the rest of the world. No politics. Perhaps our politicians could achieve more if they talk less.

But back to our question, has the governor done well with The Digital Imo Agenda? I will project answers in parables. The plan was to create a digital army from the hungry youthful population who would be challenged enough to use their talents to disrupt their local environment and create something for themselves and the rest of the world. The governor’s effort has attracted major industry players like Cisco, Huawei and Microsoft, including the National Examining Board for Technical Education (NABTEB) for certification and value optimization for its various programmes. In this respect, the governor has scored well.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony in Owerri, the Imo State capital, an obviously excited Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy admonished the young tech graduates to hold on strongly to the value that has been added to their lives, saying: “Everywhere you look in the world, there is not enough technology talents. This shortage, I want to remind you is an opportunity for young Nigerians like yourselves to fill the gap, not only in Nigeria but also globally. To take up opportunities that are not only financially rewarding but opportunities that create lasting impact for the society.’’

The minister readily used the example of two young Nigerians who are doing great things for themselves and the tech ecosystem in general. A young man of seven years ago, Kenechukwu Udoeze, has become a lead designer of Icare in the Netherlands, while Inyioluwa Gboyeji who discovered the power of digital technology and digital skills, has featured in the heart of two major unicorns, Andela and Flutterwave. The two companies are worth over $5bn within ten years. Without doubt, the minister is in full support of what is happening in Imo State and has promised to work with the government.

In less than one year, the Imo State government has created a digital army of 20, 000 personnel. That is huge by any standard and should be critically appreciated beyond the appurtenances of politics. What is also very clear is that some of these young people could be global citizens in the months and years ahead based on what the state has bequeathed to them through SkillUpImo. These young people have something to brag about. They have skills. They have hope. And they now have a future.

The governor should allow them pursue their dreams and be cautious in flaunting figures that are doing great disservice to the great work he has done with The Digital Imo Agenda.

  • EU allegedly debunks Gov. Hope Uzodinma’s claims on relocating 4,000 Imo youths abroad

EU allegedly debunks Gov. Hope Uzodinma’s claims on relocating 4,000 Imo youths abroad

In a recent campaign event ahead of the upcoming governorship election in Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodinma pledged to facilitate the relocation of 4,000 interested indigenes of Imo State to Europe and Canada by the end of December this year.

Speaking to a jubilant crowd, Governor Uzodinma shared his plans to assist Imo indigenes seeking to relocate to Europe or Canada.

He said the assistance would come in the form of providing the relevant employable skill sets that would ease their entry and adaptation to life abroad.

“By December this year, 4,000 Imo youths will be employed in Europe,” Governor Uzodinma affirmed, triggering enthusiastic responses from the gathered youths. He further assuring that their air tickets would be catered for once the opportunity arises.

However, the promise made by the governor has been met with skepticism and scrutiny.

A former member of the House of Representatives and Labour Party’s (LP) Deputy Governorship Candidate for Imo State, Tony Chinedu Nwulu, claimed to have contacted the European Union (EU) ambassador, who allegedly debunked Governor Uzodinma’s claim.

“I just chatted with the EU ambassador, and she debunked Hope’s claim, stating that she’s not aware of any such deal,” Nwulu stated, sharing a screenshot of the conversation.

National Director of Media for the LP, Yunusa Tanko, criticised the pledge, labelling it as deceitful and an insult to the state.

Tanko also accused the governor of diverting attention from the vital issue of job creation within Imo State.

Similarly, popular Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, also known as Mr. P, questioned the governor’s focus on providing job opportunities abroad instead of addressing unemployment challenges within the state.
