Imo LP governorship candidate sues British Airways

Sen. Athan Achonu, the Labour Party (LP) candidate in the recently concluded Imo governorship election, has sued the British Airways, demanding N200 million in damages over alleged contract breach.

Achonu, through his lawyer, Okwudili Anozie, filed the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/755/2024 before Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja.

In the writ of summons dated May 29 and filed May 31, the politician sued British Airways as sole defendant, wherein he sought five claims.

Achonu demanded a refund of the fare paid for the ticket purchased by him from the defendant for the Lagos-Houston return journey amounting to the sum of £16,505.00 (sixteen thousand five hundred and five pounds sterling).

He also prayed the court to ordered the airline to pay the sum of N200 million as general damages.

He equally sought a 20 per cent interest per annum on his claim number one above, from December 21, 2022, when the defendant cancelled his booking until judgment is delivered in the suit.

Achonu further sought a 10 per cent interest per annum from the date of judgment until the judgment sum is fully liquidated.

He, therefore, sought a compensation for the cost of the suit.

In his statement of claim, Achonu, who described himself as a businessman, said he is a premium traveller with the British Airways “and is a gold member of the defendant’s executive club.”

He said he purchased the airline’s first class ticket for his trip to Houston through London at a cost of £16,505.00 (sixteen thousand, five hundred and five pounds sterling) for his return trip from Lagos-Houston.

“The ticket with booking reference number M7NORM, outlined that the defendant’s flight would take off on 15th December, 2022 from Lagos, arrive at London on the 16th December, 2022, take off from London on 21st December, 2022 and arrive Houston same day.

“For the return journey, the Houston – London trip was scheduled for 11th January, 2023 and the London — Lagos trip was fixed for 11th January, 2023.

“The plaintiff pleads and shall rely on a copy of his ticket.

“The plaintiff travelled from Lagos to London on the 15th of December, 2022 without any encumbrance.

“However, on reaching London, the plaintiff had a business engagement that necessitated extending his stay in London.

“Prior to the plaintiff’s departure date from London, he informed the defendant’s office of his intention to change his traveling date to Houston from 21/12/2022 to 22/12/2022 for which he was charged $563 (five hundred and sixty three United States dollars).

“The plaintiff informed the defendant’s staff that he has an outstanding voucher with over $4000 that should be used to settle the sum but this request was refused by the defendant whose staff insisted that the defendant’s E-Voucher was unacceptable for the service and that the plaintiff has to make a fresh payment to effect the date change.”

According to him, the defendant’s staff vehemently refused for the $563 to be deducted from the plaintiff’s E-voucher number: 125-421 4295529 issued to him by the defendant.

He said he decided to use the debit card attached to his company’s bank account since the airline refused the request that payment should be deducted from the E-voucher.

“But same was refused by the defendant’s staff who insisted the plaintiff must use a bank card bearing his own name.

“The defendant’s staff had further informed the plaintiff that his ticket would be cancelled for failure to pay the $563 date change fee with his personal bank card and therefore the unused London-Houston journey, as well as the Houston-Lagos return journey stands forfeited.

“As a result of the defendant’s action, the plaintiff had to source for funds to purchase an entirely new ticket with which he made his trip from London to Houston and back to Nigeria.

“The plaintiff, who is a first-class traveller and a gold member of the defendant’s executive club deserved a better treatment than what was meted out to him by the defendant,” Achonu said

The businessmen insisted that the British Airways’ refusal to use the funds in the E-voucher it had issued to him or apply his company’s debit card to defray cost of the date change was not in consonance with the airline’s contract with him.

According to him, the defendant’s inordinate actions have foisted undue stress and financial loss to the plaintiff.

“The plaintiff is left with no other choice but to seek redress from this honourable court,” he said.

Upon resumed hearing in the suit, Gregory Ukpong, who appeared for Achonu, told the court that though the matter was fixed for mention, he had a little mix up with regards to service.

“In the circumstance, we will be asking for a further date,” Ukpong said.

“You filed this matter on 25th May, 2024. Today is 29th October, 2024 and you are coming to talk about service,” Justice Ekwo asked him rhetorically.

The lawyer responded that they mobilised the bailiff for service but they just realised that there was a mix up.

“You may not be lucky as you are today next time as I might have to penalise you,” the judge said, and adjourned the matter until Feb  19, 2025 for further mention.

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate in the Edo State governorship election, Asue Ighodalo has rejected the deployment of electoral officers from Imo and Kogi States to supervise the poll.

Ighodalo made this disclosure in an interview saying that he does not have confidence in the capacity of electoral officers the states to conduct a free and fair election.

“We are hearing rumours that INEC wants to come to our election with officials from Imo and officials from Kogi.

“We will please implore INEC that we in Edo State want fresh officials from places that have run electoral processes that are free and fair and not places where polls have been questioned.

“I will please appreciate if INEC doesn’t bring Kogi officials or Imo officials into Edo State.”

On why he doesn’t want officials from the two states, he said:

“Question marks have been placed on the processes in those two states. Edo State people are peace loving, they know light from darkness, so they don’t want any process that is going to be subverted or subversive.

Gunmen kill police operative, set station ablaze in Imo community

Gunmen launched an attack on the quiet Umulogho Community in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo, on Wednesday, killing a police operative and torching a section of a police station.

NAN learnt that the incident happened at Umulogho by NEPA Junction on the Owerri-Umuahia Road.

The gunmen were alleged to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra.

They were reported to have stormed the area in a Sienna bus at about 8p.m. on Tuesday night.

It was also learnt that the hoodlums spent more than one hour profiling residents of the area until they identified and killed the police officer.

“Upon identifying the man as a police operative, he was tortured with machete and left to die,” a source from the community told NAN on the condition of anonymity.

The source further said that the gunmen, who operated unchallenged, returned in the wee hours of Wednesday morning to burn down a section of the Divisional Police Station in the area.

Another source further disclosed that it took several hours before military personnel responded to the distress call made by the residents.

“Imo Police Command and the State Government need to step up the fight against insecurity in the state, especially in the rural areas.

“It is confusing how there are three different police formations domiciled in one police division, namely the Area Command, Isiweke Police Station and Obowo Police Division, yet the hoodlums were not challenged.

“It is even more worrisome that the police couldn’t respond because they claimed they did not have any operational vehicle.

“This is disheartening. It portends danger for residents that there is no security in the area,” the source said.

Another resident also called on the State Government to establish and equip vigilance groups in every community to support the police in the fight against violent crimes.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident to NAN.

Okoye said the command had deployed a special unit to the area to smoke out the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

“We received the report and we have deployed our tactical unit to go all out to arrest those responsible for the act.

“As I am talking to you, I am with the Commissioner of Police, and together with other service chiefs, we intend to visit the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.

“We want to equally inspire a certain level of confidence in the officers and residents, so they can go ahead with their duties and businesses without fear,” Okoye said.

Imo Assembly recommends sack of CJ over alleged age falsification

The Imo House of Assembly has recommended the immediate sack of the state Chief Judge (CJ), Justice Theresa Chikeka, over alleged age falsification.

The house made the recommendation at the committee of the whole on Wednesday, after considering the report of the four-member ad hoc committee, set up to investigate the allegation against the CJ by a civil society engagement platform.

According to the committee’s report, the petitioners were invited in the course of the investigations, along with the Head of Service (HOS), the Secretary, Imo Judicial Service Commission and the CJ.

The report further stated that while the others honoured the invitation, the CJ failed to appear.

The committee also reported that the response of the Nigerian Law School and Imo HOS showed that the CJ allegedly altered her date of birth from Oct. 27, 1956 to Oct. 27, 1958.

The house, therefore, resolved to adopt the committee’s recommendation, authorising Gov. Hope Uzodimma to remove the CJ “on the ground of gross misconduct in keeping with section 292 (2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended”.

The Speaker, Mr Chike Olemgbe, directed that the recommendation be forwarded to the National Judicial Council for necessary action.

  • Uzodinma assures Imo residents of uninterrupted power supply

Uzodinma assures Imo residents of uninterrupted power supply

Gov. Hope Uzodimma has assured residents of the 27 Local Government Areas of Imo will soon enjoy uninterrupted power supply.

Uzodimma, gave the assurance while signing two executive bills into law, a bill on electricity and another to amend Imo State Polytechnic Law No. 15 of 2012 to pave the way for the merger of campuses of the polytechnic.

The governor said that the Imo state Electricity law, would bring rapid development not only to rural communities but also to the urban centers.

“We are all living witnesses to the ordeal our people are going through in the power sector.

“There is absolutely limited or even no supply, businesses are dying everyday and people are losing everyday with unemployment market swelling everyday.

“I think it has come to a time that every sub-national government must rise and provide what will make life meaningful to her people.

“Electricity is as important as the food we eat everyday. It is the beginning of every development,” he stressed.

The governor, who noted that he took a comprehensive audit of the federal facilities in Imo and infrastructure meant to provide power, expressed concern over the abandoned Amaraku electricity project.

“The transmission and distribution infrastructure at the federal project at Egbema Power Plant initiated in 2006, has not been completed 18 years after.

“I have approached the Federal Government and requested that the project be transferred to Imo state and her development partners.

“I am happy to announce to you that President Bola Tinubu has approved the transfer of the project to Imo Government.

“I am also happy to announce that an agreement has been signed by Imo Government with a world class power company from Egypt with credibility to generate, transmit and distribute electricity in the state,” he stated.

He expressed confidence that power supply will improve in the state in the next 12 months.

Uzodimma further noted that an agreement had been signed with an Egyptian company, Afreximbank, Fidelity bank and Marriott Group to provide 200-room Imo Marriott Hotel in Owerri.

He said the state government only provided land in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) project which would be completed within 24 months.

The governor said the three projects would provide over 5,000 direct jobs for the people of the state.

He said the government has already entered into an agreement with an Egyptian firm, Elsewedy power generation, for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity to all parts of the state within the next eight months.

The governor also announced that apart from the fact that electricity is now on the concurrent list , the federal government has given approval and support for the ambitious project.

Speaking to an excited audience after signing the bill into law, Uzodimma said the ultimate goal of the project is to boost the economy of Imo state through industrialization.

According to him, with natural and human resources in the state, an uninterrupted power supply would be a filip to the industrialization policy of the administration.

On the bill for the amendment of the Imo Polytechnic law, the governor said, it was aimed at centralizing its operations as against the multi-campus arrangement.

He said: “It became necessary, given that of late, Imo now operates three state universities and there is no state in Nigeria with up to three universities.

“It has continued to over stretch our resources with the agony and risks of students going from one location to another at a time of insecurity.

“The need for a unified system became necessary to save government the resources, demands and inconveniences occasioned by the robust demands of supervision and monitoring.

“It will also allow for even and proper development of the campus so that students will graduate from an environment that really enable acquisition of knowledge and instill sense of pride in the graduating students,” Uzodimma said.

Earlier, the Speaker of the Imo House of Assembly, Mr Chike Olemgbe, while presenting the bills to the governor, said the executive bills passed legislative scrutiny and process.

Olemgbe said the timely presentation of the bill by the executive arm of the government to the State Assembly clearly shows Imo as a proactive government that yields to the yearnings of the people.

He assured the governor of the assembly’s collaboration to work with the executive arm as partners in progress to provide dividends of democracy and good governance to the people.

  • Why Imo Govt. stalled salaries of hundreds of workers – HOS

Why Imo Govt. stalled salaries of hundreds of workers – HOS

The Imo Government on Tuesday said its decision not to pay the salary of some hundreds of workers was to instill discipline, responsibility and sanity into the state civil service.

The Head of Service (HOS), Mr Raymond Ucheoma, in an interview in Owerri said that the affected workers breached various civil service rules.

“The government believes that productivity of workers will enhance development and prosperity of the state.

“The intention for recruiting workers is to provide high quality services, it is not a forced labour, which is why we have retirement, resignation or withdrawal of service.

“If at any time, a worker can no longer put in the eight hours of service in a day, the worker should write to get disengaged.

”The state government cannot become poorer because a worker wants to earn eight hours pay for three hours work, it is wrong to tolerate that type of mentality,” Ucheoma said.

The head of service added that some of the workers had cultivated the habit of not coming to work, running personal businesses or sleeping while on duty.

”It is our duty to stop their salaries and we see it as a just action,” he added.

According to him, the government is providing providing free transportation, paying salaries and benefits promptly, and providing palliatives, among others, to motivate the workers.

“So, whether the government just woke up to take actions or not, we have been just, because it is the state’s resources that are used to pay the workers,” the head of service emphasised.

A civil servant, who pleaded anonymity, confided in NAN that over 300 workers were removed from the state government payroll.

“I was removed from the payroll because I did not come to work on a certain day; we spend a lot coming to work every day in spite of the high cost of transportation and cost of living compared to what we earn for a living.

“We appeal to Gov. Hope Uzodimma to please demonstrate the milk of human kindness and reinstate us on the payroll,” the source, who is also a victim of the government’s disciplinary measure,” he said.

“All over the world, what people are talking about now; due to exigencies of the economic impact globally, is to cut cost and do a prudent management of resources.

“So, Steve Oronsaye report, if properly implemented will add value to the current policies and determination of government to cut cost and be prudent in its expenditure.”
