Argentine president under impeachment threat for promoting cryptocurrency

Argentine President Javier Milei is facing impeachment calls – and legal action accusing him of fraud – over his promotion of cryptocurrency on social media.

Milei posted on X, formerly Twitter, about the $LIBRA coin on Friday, which he said would help fund small businesses and start-ups.

He shared a link to buy it, causing its price to shoot up. But within a few hours, he deleted his post and the cryptocurrency nosedived in value, losing investors most of their money.

Some opposition members of Congress say they plan to start proceedings to impeach Milei. Meanwhile, lawyers filed complaints of fraud in Argentina’s criminal court on Sunday.

Some people online have accused Milei of what is known as a “rug pull” – where promoters of a cryptocurrency draw in buyers, only to stop trading activity and make off with the money raised from sales. They pointed out that the link used to buy the coins referenced a phrase the president uses in his speeches.

But Argentina’s presidential office said on Saturday that the decision to remove the post was to avoid “speculation” following public reaction to the launch of the cryptocurrency.

It said Milei was not involved in the cryptocurrency’s development, and that the government’s Anti-Corruption Office would investigate and determine whether anyone had acted improperly, including the president himself.

Jonatan Baldiviezo, one of the plaintiffs who filed the legal action, told Associated Press “the crime of fraud was committed, in which the president’s actions were essential”.

Milei’s political opponents have jumped on the opportunity.

Former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who is now in opposition, was heavily critical, calling him a “crypto scammer” in a post seen 6.4 million times.

For its part, the country’s main opposition coalition said it would file a request to impeach the president, calling it an “unprecedented scandal”.

Esteban Paulón, a member of the opposition Socialist Party, said in a post on X that he would also request the start of impeachment proceedings.

Rivers: PDP faction faults impeachment notice to Fubara, deputy

The factional leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Working Committee in Rivers, led by Mr Nname Ewor, has condemned impeachment notice against the governor and deputy by Rivers House of Assembly.

The committee also said that impeachment of Gov. Siminalaye Fubara was not part of the Supreme Court order.

Ewor, at a media briefing on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, urged the Martins Amaewule-led House of Assembly to follow the part of peace towards implementation of the Feb. 28 Supreme Court ruling.

According to him, impeachment was not part of the judgment, therefore, the House cannot at the moment contemplate it, especially when the governor is working towards implementing the ruling.

Ewor also, urged Gov. Siminalaye Fubara to faststrack the implementation of the ruling as well as ensure administrative stability at the grassroots by conducting the local government election.

”We urge you (Fubara) to fully implement the Supreme Court judgment and also conduct the local government election since you had graciously dissolved the immediate past chairmen and councillors in adherence to the Supreme court.

”We urge you to remain committed in your efforts to re-presenting the 2025 appropriation bill though your first attempt at accomplishing this task was resisted by the lawmakers.

‘’We, however, look forward to positive outcome on the rescheduled March 19 for the budget presentation,” he said.

Ewor urged the governor to pay less attention to the issue of impeachment notice as it is not part of the Supreme Court judgment.

He also urged members to embrace peace and cooperate with the governor in his efforts towards actualizing the 2025 budget presentation.

This, he said, among other demands by the Supreme Court, would put an end to the political unrest in the state.

Rivers Govt. urges lawmakers to end hostilities as impeachment plot thickens

The Rivers Government has urged the Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA) to reconsider its stance and prioritise the welfare of the people to ensure peace in the state.

Mr Joe Johnson, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, made the appeal at a news conference in Port Harcourt on Monday.

He stressed that a change of course by the lawmakers would prevent unimaginable suffering and crises for the state and its people.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the RSHA has earlier issued a gross misconduct notice against Gov. Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu, setting the stage for their possible impeachment from office.

Johnson condemned the Assembly’s refusal to allow the governor the opportunity to re-present the 2025 Appropriation Bill, despite a Supreme Court directive.

He criticised claims by the lawmakers that Fubara had not followed due process in notifying them about the budget presentation.

“Gov. Fubara has demonstrated his preparedness and willingness to re-present the 2025 budget and fully implement all aspects of the controversial Supreme Court ruling.

“His commitment to this process is solely for the sake of peace.

“It is unfortunate that the lawmakers are misrepresenting him, portraying him as unwilling to comply with the Supreme Court’s judgement,” he stated.

Johnson appealed to the Assembly members not to squander the opportunity to steer the state away from impending crises.

“If this opportunity to pull the state from the precipice fails, the people and residents, without exception, will suffer avoidable calamities.

“The state could face economic, social, and political upheavals, that might sink us deeper into unimaginable crises,” he warned.

The commissioner also lamented that the Supreme Court’s directive for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to withhold the state’s revenue allocations had severely hampered the government’s ability to function.

He stated that as a result, the state government would be unable to pay civil servants, retirees, and other workers their salaries, pensions, and emoluments.

Johnson further noted that the government’s other financial obligations would remain unfulfilled until the judgement was fully implemented.

“The collateral damage caused by the actions of the legislative arm in Rivers State will be so severe.

“Withholding revenues due to the state will paralyse government operations,” he emphasised.

  • Enugu: Why we impeached Udenu LG legislative leader – Councillors

Enugu: Why we impeached Udenu LG legislative leader – Councillors

The Councillors in Udenu Council Area of Enugu State, says they impeached its Legislative Leader, Dr Nnamdi Odoh, due to his “overbearing disposition, high-handedness, and intimidation which were beyond tolerable limits”.

Also, the councillors disclosed that Odoh was impeached because of his false allegations against the Chairman of the Council, Mr Aka Eze Aka.

According to reports, Odoh was impeached on Tuesday.

Eight out of the ten councillors on Wednesday elected Mr Patrick Ugwu of Amala Ward as the new legislative leader of the council.

Speaking on behalf of other Councillors in a press conference on Thursday, the Majority Leader of the Legislative Council, Sunday Onah, said that rather than Odoh serving as a bridge between the executive and the legislature, he chose to serve only himself.

“Odoh fabricated a spurious allegation against Aka, claiming that the Ukwu Akpu—Ozo Ji—New Makurdi Road project was a mere 600 meters, while the chairman falsely claimed it to be two kilometers to siphon public funds”.

He added that upon thorough investigation, his claim was proven to be a malicious falsehood, intended to incite disaffection and chaos.

According to him, an independent review of the contract papers and budget proposal affirmed that the project was accurately measured at 600 meters, as officially documented.

“This deliberate misinformation was nothing short of legislative sabotage, a desperate attempt to erode the credibility of the chairman and paint the government of Udenu in a negative light.

“Yet, the reality remains that the Eze Aka-led administration has demonstrated transparency, inclusiveness, and a clear vision for development.

“The chairman has not only extended an open hand of collaboration to the legislative council but has also ensured that the welfare of councilors is prioritised.

“Evidence is in our memo dated Feb. 16, signed by all 10 Councilors of Udenu. In that document, we commended Aka for his inclusiveness and urged all political appointees to emulate his leadership style,” the majority leader said.

Onah added that in spite of their repeated counsel and appeals for Odoh to conduct himself in a manner befitting of his office, he persisted in bringing shame to the legislative council.

He recalled that On Feb. 6, at Solid FM, and Feb. 15, 2025 at Afia TV, respectively, Odoh made reckless, unverified, and highly embarrassing statements that cast the Enugu State Government in bad light.

According to him, the impeached council leader falsely claimed that councilors in Enugu State and the entire Southeast were the least remunerated in Nigeria.

He said he made these claims, in spite of plans of Gov. Peter Mbah’s administration to improve the welfare of councilors and ensure they playe active roles in project supervision within their wards.

“Despite being advised to retract those damaging statements, he stubbornly refused, maintaining his reckless rhetoric and ignoring the collective voice of the legislative council that he purportedly led.

“His utterances were never a reflection of our views, but a selfish misrepresentation of our collective position,” he explained.

He further alleged that during their first tenure that Odoh colluded with the executive arm in a manner that rendered the entire legislature impotent, resulting in a total lack of development in their respective Wards.

Meanwhile, Odoh, in press conference on Wednesday, told newsmen that he was being witch-hunted by the council chairman and accused him of embezzling public funds.

He added that Aka prevented them from carrying their oversight function of monitoring ongoing road infrastructure in the area.

When contacted, Aka described the allegations as unfounded, saying he had no power as council chairman to impeach any member of the legislative arm.

“I have always admonished them on need to harmoniously work as one to move the council forward,” Aka said.

Enugu: Legislative council leader vows to challenge impeachment

The Leader of Udenu Legislative Council and Chairman of South-East Councillors Forum of Nigeria, Mr Nnamdi Odo, says he will challenge his impeachment in court.

Odo made this known on Thursday at a news conference, where he noted that he still the Leader of the legislative council.

He said his impeachment did not follow due process, and no reason was given for it.

Odo said that the impeachment was aimed at preventing him from performing legislative oversight function.

“Ordinarily, I would have ignored this, but for the several calls and the tension that it has generated beyond Obollo-Afor Ward IV in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State,” he said.

Odo said that he was impeached for encouraging councillors to carry out oversight functions.

He accused the council Chairman, Mr Aka Eze Aka, of masterminding and sponsoring the impeachment.

He said that the plan to impeach him and suspend the Chairman of the legislative council’s Committee on Works, Mr Daniel Aroh, started on the Feb. 20 following a request by the committee for all necessary documents of projects embarked on by the council.

He listed the documents to include contract papers showing specifications of the projects, their locations and the financial implications.

“Tension between the chairman and councillors started as the chairman directed the head of department of works not to honour the invitation of the councillors.

“I appeal to the chairman to retrace his steps.

“Using his office to intimidate me is not the way forward.

“I wish to use this medium to appeal to the state governor to call the chairman to order,” he added.

When contacted, the Chairman of Udenu Local Government, Aka, denied sponsoring the impeachment or witch hunting Odo.

Aka said that the impeachment was carried out by the members of the legislative council in spite of his intervention to stop the process.

Lagos GAC mute after Obasa’s impeachment

Lagos State lawmakers on Tuesday met with members of the State Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) to brief the council on the development at the State House of Assembly on Monday, including the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Obasa, (APC-Agege 1 ) and a sixth-term lawmaker, was serving his third term as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Thirty-two of the 40 lawmakers in the Assembly voted for his impeachment at a plenary.

The assembly subsequently elected and swore in Obasa’s  Deputy, Mrs Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa I) as the Speaker and elected  Mr Fatai Adebola (APC-Ibeji-Lekki I)  Deputy Speaker.

The assembly also indefinitely suspended its Clerk, Mr Olalekan Onafeko, during the plenary and dissolved all principal positions and standing committees.

The assembly impeached  Obasa over  allegations  of misconduct, abuse of office and financial misappropriation.

Meranda, thus, became the first female Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly. On Tuesday,  the lawmakers led by their new speaker met for hours with the GAC behind closed doors.

Meranda told journalists after the meeting that the lawmakers came to brief GAC on Monday’s development.

She said that the meeting was also to enable the lawmakers to receive blessings from the council as well as from the  leadership the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State.

“We are here to inform members of the GAC of the latest development, and my colleagues and I have come to receive their blessings as our leaders,” she said.

Members of the GAC did not speak with journalists on Monday’s development. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was absent at the meeting.

Sanwo-Olu reacts to alleged involvement in Obasa’s impeachment

Mr Gboyega Akosile, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, says the governor has no hand in the impeachment of the immediate past Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mr Mudashiru Obasa.

Akosile debunked rumours making the round that Sanwo-Olu was responsible for the removal of Obasa, over a perceived rift between him and the legislative arm.

Akosile made the clarification in an interview with NAN on Tuesday in Lagos.

“No, no, no. There is absolutely nothing true about that. I mean, no, the Governor does not have a hand in it. It was  purely a legislative matter.

“The Governor is busy with serious matters, busy with  taking care of the over 20 million Lagos population.

“What happened in the Hallowed Chamber of the House of Assembly was  purely the prerogative of the legislators.

“I mean, we saw on the media, just like you, that the legislators removed the Speaker. We watched like every other person. The Governor must have watched it like any other person.

“I don’t think there is anything more to it other than that. So, absolutely, there is no hand of the governor in the impeachment of the Speaker,” Akosile told NAN

Obasa(APC-Agege1 ), a sixth-term lawmaker, serving his third term as Speaker, was on Monday removed by lawmakers

32  out of the 40 lawmakers, at an emergency plenary, impeached Obasa via voice votes over alleged gross misconduct.

BREAKING: Opposition parties move to impeach South Korean president

Opposition parties in South Korea have filed a motion before the country’s parliament to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The motion to impeach Yeol followed a controversial martial law he imposed on South Korea but voted down by 190 lawmakers.

The office of the parliament speaker, Woo Won-shik, said that the president’s declaration of martial law was invalid following the lawmakers’ vote.

While the controversial martial law has been reversed, the parliament will by Saturday vote on whether to impeach Yeol.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party tabled the motion for impeachment before the parliament.

The party reportedly said that the move would reflect the will of the South Korean people.

“We can no longer allow democracy to collapse. The lives and safety of the people must be protected,” Kim Yong-jin, a member of the Democratic party’s central committee said.

Under South Korea’s constitution, impeachment requires a two-thirds majority in the 300-member parliament.

Earlier, South Korea’s largest labour group, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions vowed to go on indefinite strike until the president steps down.

FG files 6-count charge against 9 people over Akpabio’s impeachment rumour

The Federal Government has filed a six-count charge against nine defendants over allegations bordering on disseminating false information on the recent rumour about the impeachment of Senate President Godwil Akpabio.

Recall that the defendants were alleged to have published the false information on Oct. 16 that the Department of State Services (DSS) laid siege to the National Assembly with a view to effect the impeachment of Akpabio.

The FG sued the Incorporated Trustee of Order Paper (on whose online platform the false information was allegedly published), Oke Epia (Founder/Publisher and Executive Director of Order Paper), and Tony Okeke Ofodile (Head of Operations) as 1st to 3rd defendants.

The defendants and others at large, in count two, were alleged to have intentionally published defamatory statements regarding the DSS and the Sen. Akpabio, on their online platform.

Impeachment threat: Akpabio denies DSS invasion of NASS

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has denied the invasion of the National Assembly by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged impeachment move.

Akpabio, who made the refutal at the Wednesday’s plenary, said that the allegation reported on the social media that the DSS invaded the national assembly was not true.

He said: “It has just been brought to my attention by one of us that there is a fake news trending on the social media that the DSS surrounded the national assembly with possible impeachment of principal officers.

“There is no limit to social media. We are here sitting down and doing your work very peacefully, oblivious of the mischief that is going on behind us.

“This is what we pass through on a daily basis. It’s either they use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to inject something to turn it around in order to drive traffic. I understand that they are being paid by YouTube.

“But I hope the public is aware that this is total fake news and that the chamber is very stable and that there is no issue of impeachment,” Akpabio said.

He thereafter referred the matter to the Senate Committee on Special Duties to investigate and report its findings within 24 hours.

“Sen. Shehu Kaka, Chairman, Senate Committee on Special Duties, investigate and report back to us as soon as practicable,” he said.
