[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Aspects of God’s grace (1)

    Read: Titus 2:11-14

    Meditation verse:

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men” (Titus 2:11).

Grace is God’s life and power released towards and working in an individual.  Grace is the basis of our salvation and continues in us throughout our walk with  God, working out His divine purpose in our lives. There are different aspects of  grace highlighted in the bible which serves different functions in our lives.

Saving Grace is God’s life and power in you, that justifies and makes you a new  creation. Ephesians 2:8 says, “for by grace you have been saved through faith,  and not of yourselves; it is the gift of God”. Titus 2:11 says, “for the grace of God  that brings salvation has appeared to all men”. This grace is the impartation of  God’s life in you that keeps you from being lost.

Standing Grace is the ongoing work of God in you as a believer in Jesus Christ,  strengthening and enabling you to stand victorious in life. it is the impartation of God’s strength that keeps you from being defeated by the enemy. Hebrews  4:16 says “let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may  obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need”.

Sanctifying Grace is God’s life and power released towards and working in you  that cleanses and enables you to live a holy life. It is the impartation of God’s  holiness and sets you apart for God’s purpose. 1 Peter 1:13-14 says, “therefore  gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace  that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ, as obedient children,  not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance”.

Sharing Grace is God’s life and power released towards and working in you,  empowering you to share your life and gifts with others, cheerfully. It is the  impartation of god’s generosity and keeps you from being selfish. 2 Corinthians  9:8 says, “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always  having all sufficiency, in all things, may have an abundance for every good work”.

Serving Grace is the impartation of God’s ability that empowers you to serve  others. It keeps you from being unproductive. This grace is the wellspring of all  ministry gifts, distributed to us in different measures. “Having gifts differing  according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them…” (Romans 12:6).

  • [Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: All by His grace

[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: All by His grace

    Read: EPHESIANS 1:3-13

    Meditation verse:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of  God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Grace is God’s voluntary and loving favor given freely to sinful mankind. It comes from God’s  mercy and love. There’s nothing you can ever do to earn it. Grace is an unmerited favor that  you receive through faith in Jesus Christ. Everything you are and every endeavor in your life  is all by His grace. By grace you were saved. Ephesians 2:5 says that even when you were dead  in your trespasses, God in his rich mercy and great love for you, made you alive together with  Christ. Indeed, your entire salvation and redemption journey is all by the grace of God.

Your salvation came by grace: “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all  men” (Titus 2:11). After your salvation, you can serve God acceptably by grace. It is His grace  working in you that enables you to do of His good pleasure: “Therefore, since we are receiving  a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably  with reverence and godly fear” (Hebrews 12:28). The spiritual gifts you receive after your  conversion are based on grace: “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given  to us, let us use them…” (Romans 12:6). The power to witness to others is by grace: “And with  great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace  was upon them all (Acts 4:33).

By grace you continue to overcome your limitations, weaknesses, temptations, and sinful  nature: “And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in  weakness…” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Your ability to do good to others is based on grace: “And  God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all  things, may have an abundance for every good work” (2 Cor 9:8).

You have become who you are only by grace. Every accomplishment and success in your life  has only been made possible by grace: But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace  toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the  grace of God which was with me” (1 Cor 15:10). You do not get the punishment you deserve  because of His grace. Grace is your enabler in time of need: “Let us therefore come boldly to  the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews  4:16). It is the grace of God upon your life guarantees your overall wellbeing. So, may “the  grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be  with you all. Amen (2 Cor 13:14).

  • [Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: He will teach you all things

[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: He will teach you all things

    Read: John 14: 15-26

    Meditation verse:

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will  teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you”  (John 14:26).

We often collect our clothes from the drycleaners in large batches and on this  occasion, we had just received a large collection. As I walked towards the cloths,  my eyes feel on one of my skirts which had a matching top. I am not sure why I  did so, but I decided to look for the matching top, only to realise that it was  missing. I returned to the drycleaners a couple of days later to make my  complain. After a long search, they brought not just the blouse I was looking for,  but ten other clothing items that had been left behind. Looking back, I believe  strongly that it was the Holy Spirit that stirred my heart to search for that blouse  at that moment in time. Had I not done so, I would never have realised that  other items had not been returned.

The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, Teacher, Advocate and Helper. The bible says  He will teach us all things; and all things means all things, without exception. His  ministry in our lives is not limited to spiritual matters. He can teach you how to  manage your business, run your home, take care of your children, choose the  best option, or make the best decision. He can show you things to come and  remind you of things that will benefit you. However, He is a gentle Spirit; and  will not force His way in you. Learn to be sensitive to the presence of the Holy  Spirit inside of you. Learn to be sensitive to His ministry in your life. Learn to  recognize His voice and stirring.

You do not need to live a confused, clueless, and stressed life. The Helper, the  Holy Spirit, whom the Father has given to you as His child, is willing to teach you  all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that you need to know.

  • [Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Everything will be alright in the end

[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Everything will be alright in the end

    Read: Ecclesiastes 7:8-10

    Meditation verse:

The end of a thing is better than its beginning; the patient in spirit is better than  the proud in spirit” (Ecclesiastes 7:8).

Our understanding of things as humans is very limited; only God understands  and knows everything. We are therefore prone to false attributions, faulty  assumptions, biases, exaggerations, wrong decisions, and incorrect conclusions.  We may also misinterpret the things that happen to us in life because we  concluded based on our limited understanding or on just the evidence that we  can see. Hebrews 11 says “now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the  evidence of things not seen”. Does this not mean that there are things that we  cannot see? There are things happening behind the scenes of our lives that we  are unaware of and as a result we interpret the circumstances of our lives based  on what we can see and conclude that all is not well.

What can you see happening in your life right now and what have you concluded  about that situation? Before you label it as bad, can you truthfully say that you  have all the facts and evidence to conclude rightly? Aren’t there some things  about that situation that you do not know or are not so certain about?  Ecclesiastes 11:5 states “As you do not know what is the way of the wind, or how  the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child, so you do not know the  works of God who makes everything”. God specializes in working behind the  scenes of our lives and the secret things belong to Him. You have no way of  knowing what He is doing about your situation, why then would you conclude  and give it a tag?

Here’s what God says in His word “The end of a thing is better than its beginning; the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. Do not hasten in your spirit  to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools. Do not say, why were the  former days better than these? For you do not inquire wisely concerning this”. (Ecclesiastes 7: 8-10). So be rest assured that irrespective of what is going on  right now, everything will be alright in the end. If it is not alright now, then it is  not the end. God says it, believe it and that settles it.

  • [Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Stop running and fight back

[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Stop running and fight back

    Read: 2 Corinthians 10:3-6

    Meditation verse:

“Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James  4:7).

“Apocalypto” is an epic historical adventure film set in the Mayan civilization of  Southern Mexico. This fictional movie portrays the hero journey of a young man  named Jaguar Paw and his fellow tribesmen who are captured by an invading  force. After the devastation of their village, they are brought on a perilous  journey to a Mayan city for human sacrifice. Jaguar Paw managed to escape but  his captors chased after him. He ran in the forest for days, climbing on trees to  hide from his captors who were hot on his trail.

And then suddenly he stopped running and said to himself “my name is Jaguar  Paw, son of Flint Sky. I am a hunter, and this forest belongs to me. My father  hunted here first before me, and my children will hunt after me. I am not afraid”. And then he began to fight back. He knew the forest well, so he set traps for his  chasers. One time he attacked them with a swarm of bees wrapped in leaves.  Another time he got venom from frogs and used as weapons against them.  Jaguar Paw fought with his last strength using weapons he made from nature  and one after the other he killed his chasers.

You have mighty weapons to defeat every stronghold of the enemy (2  Corinthians 10:4). When jaguar Paw stopped running, he defeated his enemies.  Stop running and fight back. James 4:7 says, “resist the devil and he will flee  from you”. Face up to the devil or whatever is contending with you in the place  of your destiny. Say “I am …, son of the Most High God. The earth is the Lord’s  and all its fullness. I am not afraid”. Then take up your weapons and fight.

Take up the whole Armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil  day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist  with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your  feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of  faith with which, you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word  of God, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit” (Ephesians  6:13-18). These are your mighty weapons as a child of God. Use them.

  • [Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Is your gift yielding any profit for God?

[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Is your gift yielding any profit for God?

    Read: Mathew 25:14-29

    Meditation verse:

“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use  them…” (Romans 12:6).

Your spiritual gift is the ability you receive from the Holy Spirit after your  salvation. You receive it by grace and not by your efforts. God expects you to  use it to profit His kingdom. Your gift could be spiritual, such as the gift of healing  or prophecy. It could be physical such as a creative or musical ability. It could  also be mental, such as an intellectual ability or great leadership skills. I  Corinthians 12:4-7 says, “there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There  are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of  activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of  the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all”

Here are some things to note about spiritual gift(s)

    • God gives spiritual gifts in different measures and proportions. In today’s  reading, we see the parable of the talents, where the master gave his  servants measures of five, two and one.
    • Your spiritual gift was given to you for a purpose. “And Bezalel and  Aholiab, and every gifted artisan in whom the Lord has put wisdom and  understanding, to know how to do all manner of work for the service of  the sanctuary, shall do according to all that the Lord has commanded.”

(Exodus 36:1). God expects you to use yours to expand His kingdom. When you use it for God’s glory, He will multiply it.

    • If you do not utilise your spiritual gift, it would diminish in value and  eventually disappear. The master referred to the servant who buried his  talent as unprofitable and collected it back from him.
    • Your gift is the easiest route to your success and wealth because you are  uniquely gifted to do what only you can do in a way that only you can do  it. “A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.

Lastly, when all is said and done, you will stand before the Judge and  Master to give an account of how you used your gift. (Mathew 25:15).

  • [Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: The Lord will make room for you

[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: The Lord will make room for you

    Read: Mark 2:1-4

    Meditation verse:

“Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea and a path through the mighty  waters” (Isaiah 43:16).

My Consulting Office is in a serviced complex where the parking spaces are not  enough to serve every office. So parking is on a first come, first serve basis. On  this morning as I approached the gate, I could see that all the parking spaces had  been taken. But just as I drove in through the gate, someone pulled out from the  first parking space, making room for me to park my car in that choice location.  Instinctively, it dawned on me that this was a prophetic word for the moment  as I heard the following words in my spirit “so will the Lord make room for you  wherever you need to flourish, even though it may seem crowded in the  moment”.

Four men wanted Jesus to heal their paralytic friend whom they carried on a  bed, but they could not gain access to Jesus because of the crowd. So, they  uncovered the roof of the building where Jesus was, let down the bed on which  the paralytic was lying. And Jesus honoured their faith. In today’s competitive  and overcrowded marketplace, where the competition is stiff, and opportunities  are few, you may have become stranded in life. Perhaps you desire that job,  position, promotion, or contract, but can’t seem to make a headway due to lack  of access. And unlike the paralytic who was lucky enough to have friends who  could help him gain access, you may not even have anyone, no networks, no  connectionsto help you gain access. If this is your story, then the prophetic word  I received that morning is for you.

The Lord will make room for you in that area that currently seems out of your  reach. Suddenly, someone will pull out of the race, and you will be just in the  right place at the right moment to occupy the space. If God can make a road in  the wilderness and rivers in the desert, certainly, He can make room for you in  any sphere of endeavour in today’s marketplace.

    The song writer says:

“God will make a way when there seems to be no way. He works in ways we  cannot see; He will make a way. He will be my guide, hold me closer to His side,  with love and strength for each new day, He will make a way, He will make a  way” Make this song your declaration and let your faith come alive again.

  • [Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Understanding the power of gratitude (3)

[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Understanding the power of gratitude (3)

    Read: PSALM 103:1-22

    Meditation verse:

Bless the Lord, o my soul, and forget not all His benefits” (Psalm 103:2) So, are you a grateful person? Here is a checklist for you.

Grateful people are content with what they have. They believe that everything  they own is a blessing from God. They eschew the self-entitlement mindset,  believing they have received all by God’s mercy and grace.

Grateful people attract peace to their lives. “Thankfulness creates gratitude  which generates contentment that causes peace” (Todd Stocker). Are you at  peace or constantly fret over everything?

Grateful people are cheerful givers. Because they believe they have freely  received from God, they are willing to freely give back to others.

Grateful people are faithful people. They are FAT- faithful, available, and  teachable. (not fay in weight).

Grateful people easily forgive others. They acknowledge their own humanity  and are willing to overlook the shortcomings of others. By extension, they are  accommodating of others. Do you find it easy to let people go or you hold on  to offences?

Grateful people have no need to compare themselves with others. They are  content with who they are and what they have. “…But they, measuring  themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are  not wise” (2 Corinthians 10:12). Grateful people are wise.

Lastly, grateful people always attract God’s presence and blessings upon their  lives. God inhabits the praise of His people (Psalm 22:3) and wherever God  dwells, blessings are sure to abound.

Therefore, by Him, let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is  the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name” (Hebrews 13:15).

  • [Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Understanding the power of gratitude (2)

[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Understanding the power of gratitude (2)

    Read: PSALM 100:1-5

    Meditation verse:

“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be  thankful to Him, and bless His name” (Psalm 100:4).

Developing and maintaining a heart of gratitude to God is one sure way to live a  happier and more fulfilling life. Gratitude simplifies your life. When you form the  habit of appreciating God for very basic things, you notice the very simple things  of life and your sense of contentment or peace increases. This mind was in the  apostle Paul when he said, “I know how to abound, and I know how to abase”.

Gratitude is a seed. It makes your life fruitful. A grateful person always wants to  give back and serve others. And as you sow, you receive back in good measure.  A Grateful heart is a receptacle. When you are thankful, your tank will always be  full. Gratitude beautifies your life. I have an aunt who is such a grateful and  beautiful soul. The brain responds to praise by releasing endorphins. Don’t you  see how light you feel when you are praising God?

Why then do we often fail to show gratitude to God?

o Failure to see God in the process or in our affairs. The ten lepers where  told, go show yourselves to the priest, and as they went, they discovered  they were healed. They properly thought it was no big deal, since the  healing process was too simple. In the same way, we fail to see the hand  of God in our lives, but every of life’s process is a miracle and blessing. The  Psalmist says “I slept and woke up, only because the Lord sustained me.  Suddenly you are asleep, and suddenly you are awake. Sleeping and  waking is a mystery.

o Failure to notice the blessings of God: The bible says “when he saw that  he was healed. Do we notice the seemingly little things that God does for  us? Everything good and perfect gift is from God. Everything God does is  important and should be acknowledged.

o Forgetfulness. We often forget to express our gratitude to God. One the way to the promised land, the children of Israel often complained and  murmured at the slightest inconvenience, even when they had just  witnessed a miraculous provision some moments earlier.

o Pride can also prevent us from expressing gratitude to God. It takes  humility to show gratitude and appreciate the blessings of life.

  • [Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Understanding the power of gratitude (1)

[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Understanding the power of gratitude (1)

    Read: LUKE 17:11-19

    Meditation verse:

“So, Jesus answered and said, “where there not ten cleansed? But where are the  nine?” (Luke 17:17).

Gratitude is the quality of being thankful. It is a readiness to show appreciation  for and return kindness. Gratitude is a lifestyle. It is not something you do every  now and then. Ephesians 5:20 says “giving thanks always for all things unto GOD.  Always and all things means always and all things. That speaks of a lifestyle. It  did not say only when something is done for you. When you do something  always, it becomes a part of you, reflecting in your attitude, speech, and actions.

Our expression of gratitude should not depend on what is going on in our lives:  1 Thessalonians 5:18 says “in everything give thanks for this is the will of God. God expects us to show gratitude and be thankful. He is pleased when we do.  However, He will not demand it from us or force us to be grateful.

In today’s reading, ten lepers were healed by Jesus, only one returned to show  gratitude. And Jesus pleased with his action said to him, “your faith has made  you whole. Gratitude completes your blessings by opening you up for more There are several other benefits of showing gratitude to God.

Gratitude is a strategic weapon to deploy in times of uncertainty. When you are  faced with an overwhelming situation, and don’t know what to do, express  gratitude to God by praising Him and thanking Him for all the things He has done  for you. In 2 Chronicles 20, When King Jehoshaphat and the nation was faced  with a battle against three kings, they praised God and The Almighty took over  the battle.

Gratitude guards your heart with the peace of God that surpasses all  understanding. Phil 4:6-8 says “be careful for nothing, but in everything by  prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to  God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard your  hearts and minds through Christ Jesus”.

Gratitude opens doors of blessings. Psalm 67:5-7 says, “let the people praise YOU  O GOD, ……then, the earth shall yield her increase”. The best way to remind God  of what He has not done is to thank Him for what he has done.
