According to Onwudiwe, the order is in line with security arrangements by the Presidential Transition Council, for the smooth conduct of the inauguration parade for the swearing-in ceremony of President-Elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu on May 29.

“Accordingly, officers and intending visitors to the affected areas will not be allowed access till Tuesday, May 30 when work will resume in earnest. “

Unveiling Nigeria’s future: Post-May 29 and the Tinubu legacy

Nigerians look forward to May 29th when the President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will be inaugurated to bring hope to more than 133 million people, most of whom live in extreme poverty.

There are already high expectations that the incoming president must strive to meet in the areas such as the economy, education, health, security, infrastructure and employment creation for the country’s teeming youth population.

Nigeria’s unemployment rate is projected by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to reach 40.6 per cent this year, from 37.7 per cent in 2022.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on March 1, pronounced Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), winner of the controversial February 25 presidential election.

Tinubu reportedly got a total of 8,794,726 votes cast, the most of the 17 candidates who took part in the election.

Before the election, Tinubu made a number of promises in his official manifesto dubbed “Hope Renewed”, where he unveiled his plans for the country in nine priority areas, including national security, economy, agriculture, energy, oil and gas, transportation and education.

The President-elect has promised a Nigeria where there would be enough jobs with decent wages, especially for young people and a better life for all.

He promised to “produce, create and invent” more of the goods and services required in the country so that Nigeria can move from being a consumer to a producer.

According to the manifesto, Tinubu plans to upgrade and expand public infrastructure so that the rest of the economy can thrive, as well as encourage and empower youths and women to leverage emerging sectors such as digital economy, entertainment and tourism.

“We seek a Nigeria where no parent is forced to send a hungry child to bed wondering if there will be food tomorrow,” the manifesto read in part.

Tinubu has also expressed commitment to generating, transmitting and distributing enough affordable electricity to provide Nigerians with the energy they need to light up their lives, their homes and their dreams, and to provide healthcare, education and make basic housing accessible and affordable for all citizens.

Despite the controversies surrounding the election which has resulted in court cases, some prominent politicians, even of the opposition, have thrown their weights behind the President-elect and have encouraged others to do same.

For example, the Governor of Rivers state, Nyesome Wike, expressed optimism that the President-elect will live up to the expectations of the Nigerian people and appealed to citizens to lend their support to ensure the success of the Tinubu-led government.

“The election is over and a victor has been declared, so all Nigerians must unite and give him (Tinubu) the support he needs,” Wike said.

Similarly, the Governor of Oyo state, Seyi Makinde, also pledged his support for the Tinubu government.

On the other hand, criticisms have begun to trail Tinubu’s leadership style which a section of the country say is not inclusive, judging by the appointment of a 16-man Presidential Transition Council.

Leading Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, have pointed out that the absence of an Igbo person on the team and accused the President-elect of being a “tribalist”.

Vice-President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Damian Okeke-Ogene, said: “Igbophobia is in his (Tinubu) veins and by not including Igbo people in the handover committee, he is only trying to reopen old wounds.

“He inherited the hatred (Muhammadu) Buhari has against Igbo, especially when the President-elect has said he will continue from where the incumbent president stopped,” Okeke-Ogene was quoted as saying.

He stressed that Ohanaeze had not accepted Tinubu’s emergence as the president-elect “because any house built on a faulty foundation is bound to collapse. We believe that the process of the 2023 presidential election is still on”.

However, the Executive Director of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, slammed Abubakar for presenting himself as a friend of the Igbo people, saying that the PDP presidential candidate had done the PDP’s Igbo members a disservice by deciding to wrest the presidential candidacy from the party, contrary to his party’s rotation rule.

“I make bold to state that the former vice president had long lost the moral high ground to parade himself or even pontificate as a friend of Ndigbo. It’s sheer hypocrisy which cannot wipe out the injury inflicted on Igbo members of the PDP by our dear brother-in-law,” Okechukwu said.

Tribunal can stop Tinubu’s inauguration, he has a case – Sam Amadi

The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, Sam Amadi has said the President-elect, Bola Tinubu’s inauguration could be stopped before May 29, insisting that he has a serious case in tribunal.

His statement was contained in a post via his Twitter handle on Thursday.

The statement followed Wike’s declaration of Wednesday May 3 as a public holiday for the people to receive Tinubu, who was invited by the governor.

The statement had attracted mixed interpretations.

However, the public affairs analyst took to his Twitter handle to make further clarifications, saying it is not automatic that Tinubu will form the next government.

He wrote, “Clarification on Legal Status of President-Elect.

“@officialABAT is PRESIDENT-ELECT. But he is not yet President.

    2. It isn’t automatic that he will form the next government. He has a serious case in tribunal that can go either way.

    3. The tribunal can stop the inauguration before 29.

“Like I always say, corruption in language leads to corruption in statecraft. Just as the law gave @inecnigeria power to make a declaration, it gives the judiciary the power to reverse it. There’s no constitutional duty to inaugurate on May 29 if a declaration is legally challenged as here.

“There is no fait accompli about the situation. Some use of language can create a false narrative where we believe that a declaration by @inecnigeria no matter how wrong constitutes a new government. No. It does not, until the final court says so.”

Match Commissioners, referees must be above board – Gusau warns at inauguration

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau has warned that it would no longer be business as usual for match commissioners and referees in the domestic game, as persons who fail to meet the high standards already put in place will be summarily ejected and sanctioned appropriately.

The NFF President made this remark at the inauguration of the Referees and Match Commissioners’ Committees inside the NFF Secretariat, Abuja on Thursday.

“We have been diligent and statute-compliant in the selection of the membership of both the Referees Committee and the Match Commissioners’ Committees, and therefore, we expect them to do their job with the highest level of integrity, passion, commitment and sense of duty.

“The onus is on the committees as we will keenly monitor the performances of your appointees and be dispassionate in our assessment. Anyone found wanting will be thrown out without ceremony, and be visited with further sanctions. The NFF is determined to change the narrative in the league and there is no going back. Please help us to have a new league that all stakeholders will be proud of,” Gusau said.

Chairman of the Match Commissioners Committee and NFF Board Member, Alhaji Babagana Kalli pledged that his committee will ascent on transparency and integrity in its work, while also focusing its searchlight on its appointees in order to weed out those who fail to align with the new dance steps.

On her part, Mrs Faith Irabor, who chairs the Referees Committee, asserverated that the narrative will definitely change from the umpires’ side as Nigeria football moves to implement the highest standards of probity in match officiating.

Adamu’s first move falters as group condemns his inauguration of Akwa Ibom chairman

A group under the aegis of Defenders of Akwa Ibom APC, DAIA has condemned the inauguration on Tuesday of a new chairman for the Akwa Ibom chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC by the new national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

The group in a statement expressed shock over what it claimed as the deliberate overlook of a court injunction restraining the party from recognizing and inaugurating Obong Stephen Ntukekpo as the chairman of the party.

“What has happened is that the leadership of the party has started on the path of illegality and against the desire of the mainstream of the party,” DIAA coordinator, Ibok Essein said in a statement.

“So long as there existed an injunction against the inauguration of Ntukekpo, it behooved the party’s leadership to have waited for the judicial process to run its course in order not to infringe on the right of everyone concerned and that is why we are especially pained by this development.”

Expressing concern that elements from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP were dictating the situation in the party, DAIA added.

“We are concerned that the godfather of the Ntukekpo is the minister of Niger Delta, Senator Godswill Akpabio, a man who as governor so much destroyed the progressives in Akwa Ibom.

“It is unfortunate that he has manourvered himself into our party and is now destroying our party from inside,” the group said.

A movie or even a song would have been made from Ebele, Bianca altercation- Soludo

The new Governor of Anambra State, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, on Tuesday, said that a movie or even a song would have been made from the altercation between the immediate past first lady of the state, Ebelechukwu Obiano, and Bianca Ojukwu, wife of Biafra warlord, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

The new Anambra governor noted that
he enjoyed the comedy that emerged from the incident.

In his words: “The comedy that has emerged from it all that I have enjoyed. There is no distraction whatsoever. I think it was meant to be.

“Sometime to come there will even be some movies or comedies and even a song out of that.

“As you saw, I didn’t even notice much of what happened. I think it happened while I was going to sign the oath of allegiance. It was just like a one-second thing.

“I turned again and continued signing my thing and I have not had one minute discussing it other than the comic relief you see posted. We are intensely focused on what we must deliver to our people.”

Bianca had explained that she gave Ebele a dirty slap on Thursday in order to stop her from attacking her.

She gave the explanation on Friday in a statement titled ‘My Story’ where she recounted what transpired between her and the former First Lady at the inauguration of the new state governor, Charles Soludo.

Tight security at APC secretariat as party inaugurates state chairmen

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday in Abuja tightened security in and around its National Secretariat as the party inaugurates elected state chairmen.

Also, human and vehicular movements have been restricted around the secretariat.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the measures were to forestall possible protest during the ceremony.

NAN reports that this move was as a result of crises in some of the party’s state chapters that produced parallel state chairmen at its 2021 State Congresses.

Security operatives took positions on the entire Blantyre Street in Wuse 2 District, Abuja, where the APC national secretariat is located.

The Gov. Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) had on Wednesday night, issued a circular ordering the secretariat staff to stay away from work.

It was gathered that this was part of effort to have a manageable staff for fear of breakdown of law and order.

At the time of filing this report, journalists were also not allowed access to the APC national secretariat.

However, the security operatives were civil in screening a few persons, especially those to be inaugurated.

The elected chairmen supporters, who turned up in large numbers, drumming and singing their praises were also denied access to the secretariat.

One of the operatives told NAN that they were only doing their job as instructed and would not leave anything to chance.

He said the measure was necessary to forestall possible breakdown of law and order.

The crisis that trailed the state congresses necessitated the inauguration of the Sen. Abudulahi Adamu-led National Reconciliation Committee which submitted its interim report on Jan. 31.

Adamu had told newsmen that the committee received 47 petitions as at Jan. 30, adding that some party members were still waiting to submit their petitions.

“We had promised that we will do justice as humanly possible to everybody who is aggrieved through fair hearing.

“And this is what we are doing. We had to come today to submit this interim report because we are acting as Boy Scout. A good Boy Scout obeys before complaints,’’ he had said.

He, however, said that there was still work to be done, adding that reconciliation was a work in progress.

Adamu said the committee could not pretend that it had taken care of every issue that was brought to it.

“Until we get the final report from the national secretariat, we cannot say success, until they declare our work successful.

“We cannot declare our own work successful. We will be more deceitful if we do so. All we can do is to make recommendations as a reconciliation committee,’’ he said.

Buni, chairman of the APC CECPC while receiving the report, assured that it would be looked into its implementation.
