‘WAHALA DE’ : Again , petrol price increases to N1150 per litre across Nigeria

Hunger seems to to have been further amplified as again, petrol prices across Nigeria have increased to between N1,050 and N1,150 per litre.

This development follows a price adjustment by Dangote Refinery, which raised its rates from N899 to N955 per litre for bulk purchases.

Private depots nationwide have also raised their prices, with some locations now charging over N1,000 per litre for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Oil marketers explained that the hike is primarily due to rising crude oil prices, which recently climbed to $81.84 per barrel, the highest in 2025.

Deregulation of the petroleum sector and logistics costs have further contributed to the price surge.

Areas far from depots, such as the hinterlands, are experiencing the steepest prices, with some regions reporting costs of up to N1,150 per litre.

Private depots in Lagos and Calabar have also adjusted their loading costs.

For instance, Sahara and Pinnacle depots raised prices to N970 per litre, while Rainoil and Alkanes in Calabar now charge N1,000 per litre.

Retail stations are adding logistics and regulatory charges to their prices, pushing the pump rates higher for consumers.

Marketers predict that prices will continue to rise due to the global increase in crude oil costs.

With deregulation in place, the industry relies on demand and supply dynamics, making fluctuations inevitable.

Experts warn that this trend will significantly impact consumers and businesses across the country

    Meditation verse:

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase”. (1 Corinthians 3:6).

We were created to work and not to be idle. Ephesians 2:10 says, “we are His  workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared  beforehand that we should walk in them”. As soon as God created the first man,  he gave him an assignment; to till the garden, be fruitful and dominate the earth.  You were put on this earth to fulfill your own assignment and take dominion  over the earth. There will always be work for you to do. Ecclesiastes 9:10 says  that whatever your hand finds to do, do it well. The size of a task is immaterial,  your responsibility is to always give it your best. The outcomes and results you  get whilst accomplishing a task are up to God.

The Apostle Paul said he planted, and Apollos watered but God was the one who  gave the increase. In order words, the results of their efforts were in God’s  hands. This is an important insight for anyone feeling discouraged by the  outcomes of their efforts in whatever task they are doing. If you have toiled in a  particular endeavor but have seen minimal results, keep toiling. Proverbs 16:33  (NLT) says “we may throw the dice, but the Lord determines how they fall”  Ecclesiastes 11:5 says as we do understand the path of the wind or how the  bones grow in a woman with a child, so we do not understand the working of  God. Psalm 75:6 says that promotion does not come from the East, West, or  South. Romans 9:16 says that it does not therefore depend on man’s efforts.

Increase comes from God. Keep working at the tasks you have been given.  Commit to whatever your hand finds to do. Stay faithful and do not relent. “Now  the just shall live by faith; but if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in  him” (Hebrews 10:38). Do not cast away your confidence, for in due season, you  will reap if you do not lose heart (Galatians 6:9). Be rest assured that whatever  God is involved in must grow. So, commit your work to Him and you will succeed.

Omicron: New York records rise in hospitalised children

With Omicron cases on the rise, New York health officials have reported an spike in hospitalized children, as the White House promised Sunday to quickly resolve the United States’ Covid-19 test shortage.

The New York State Department of Health warned “of an upward trend in pediatric hospitalizations associated with Covid-19,” in a statement Friday.

In New York City, it “identified four-fold increases in Covid-19 hospital admissions for children 18 and under beginning the week of December 5 through the current week,” it said.

Approximately half of the admissions are younger than five, an age group that is vaccine ineligible, the department added.

The number of Covid-19 cases in the United States is on the rise, with an average of nearly 190,000 new infections daily over the past seven days, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.

The arrival of the new Omicron variant, compounded by holiday celebrations that typically include travel and family reunions, have caused a rush on tests in the United States, where it is difficult to get one in many locations.

Top US pandemic advisor Anthony Fauci on Sunday acknowledged a Covid “testing problem” and vowed to make more tests available to Americans next month.

“One of the problems is that that’s not going to be totally available to everyone until we get to January and there are still some issues now of people having trouble getting tested,” Fauci told ABC News.

  • No Increase in Fuel Price in February – NNPC

No Increase in Fuel Price in February – NNPC

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has ruled out any increment in the ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) in February, 2021.

This was disclosed in a press release by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Dr. Kennie Obateru.

The statement explained that the decision was to allow ongoing engagements with organized labour and other stakeholders on an acceptable framework that will not expose the ordinary Nigerian to any hardship, to be concluded.

NNPC urged petroleum products marketers not to engage in hoarding of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) in order not to create artificial scarcity and unnecessary hardship for Nigerians while giving assurance that it has enough stock of petrol to keep the nation well supplied for about 40 days. It further called on relevant regulatory authorities to step up monitoring of the activities of marketers with a view to sanctioning those involved in products hoarding or arbitrary increase of pump price.

It would be recalled that the nation’s downstream sector was deregulated in March 2020 with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, stating that the prices of petroleum products would be determined my prevailing market forces.

Labour tackles FG over fresh move to increase fuel price

The Organised Labour has criticised the federal government over its fresh move to increase petrol pump price following the rise of crude oil price above $60 per barrel in the international market.

Timipre Sylva, the minister of State for Petroleum Resources, on Tuesday at the official launch of Nigerian Upstream Cost Optimisation Programme, urged Nigerians to be ready to bear the pains of the proposed hike.

The minister said with no provision of subsidy in the 2021 budget, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), cannot continue to bear the cost of under-recovery.

But reacting to the admonition, President of TUC, Quadri Olaleye, wondered why the government is always in rush to increase fuel price any time there is a rise of crude oil at the international market.

According to him, the government never for once deemed it fit to bring down the price of petrol when there is a fall in price of crude oil in the international market.

“Why is it that the government is always in a hurry to implement an increase any time crude oil price rises in the international market? Last time when the price went down in the market, Nigerian government didn’t reduce the price of PMS.

“Why are they now rushing to increase it? They need to be intelligent with it if they want more problems in this country. Besides, we are still expecting the report of the technical committee set up last time by February 22. So, why the rush?” Olaleye queried.

The union leader said the organised labour would not disclose its strategies on how to fight the government this time around if it tries to inflict more pains on Nigerians the way it had been doing through some of its anti-masses policies including increment of price of fuel.

Several calls to the mobile phones of President and Secretary of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba and Emmanuel Ugboaja respectively, were not answered neither did they respond to a text message from our correspondent.

Nigeria’s unemployment rate increases to 27.1% -NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics has released statistics on the country’s unemployment rate.

The bureau of statistics noted that after a 20-month interval, the unemployment rate rose to 27.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2020 from the 23.1 per cent recorded in Q3 2018.

  • Bakers to Nigerians: Get ready for 60% increase in prices of bread

Bakers to Nigerians: Get ready for 60% increase in prices of bread

Bakers in Lagos State have urged the Federal Government to intervene in the prices of baking materials, which may lead to increase in the prices of bread by 60 per cent anytime soon.

The bakers complained that the increase in the prices of baking materials was because of the Covid-19 pandemic ravaging the world.

In a statement by the Lagos Chairmen, Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, Kosofe and Surulere local chapters, Comrade Taiwo Akintola and Comrade Ibitoye Oladapo, the group expressed sadness over the situation the bakers were battling with.

According to the association, the high cost of baking materials is killing the bakery businesses, as many bakeries are finding it difficult to make profits due to the high cost of the materials.

“A bag of flour that costs N9,000 before COVID-19, now goes for N13,000, while a bag of sugar now costs N24, 000 as against the former price of N13,000.

“Butter is now N12,000 against N7,500, while milk, which was hitherto N29,000, now goes for N52,000. And there is an increase in the Bread packaging cost which is now N12, 000 against the former price of N10,000,” the group said.

They added that the prices of salt, yeast and other baking materials had also hit the roof top.

The association also explained that the instability of foreign exchange, high cost of diesel and other baking materials were reasons given by flour millers for the hike in the prices of baking materials, stressing that the association has appealed to flour millers and other people involved in the selling of baking materials to reduce their prices, but is yet to yield favourable response.

“And that is why we are pleading with Federal Government to intervene in this matter by talking to flour millers and baking material sellers to bring the prices down.

“Master bakers association is one of the largest employers of labour in the country and most of the bakeries are folding up, many Nigerians working in the bakery sector are already losing their jobs,” the group added

While appealing to both federal and state governments to quickly come in and address the situation for the benefit of all, the association maintained that “If we are supposed to follow the trend of increase in the prices of raw materials for our production, the prices of bread may increase by 60per cent,” the bakers said.
