Nigeria will be great despite challenges – CAN President

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President, Christian Association of Nigeria, and Co-chairman, Nigeria Interreligious Council, says Nigeria will be great if the citizens remain steadfast and prayerful in pursuing the Nigeria project.

“Though we are still facing challenges, let us not give up,” Okoh said in his message to mark Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Anniversary on Saturday.

He added that Nigeria has the potential to not only be great, but continue to lead Africa on the global stage.

While urging Nigerians to pray fervently for the success of the 2023 elections, the CAN president advised the Federal Government to resolve the impasse with university lecturers, for the sake of young people whose future is at stake.

“Let us continue to rely on the faithfulness of God as we continue to do the best we can to ensure justice and peace reign in our country.

“I urge you to take the unpleasant experiences that have plagued our nation in the past as necessary lessons of life that will make us a stronger, better, and resilient nation on earth.

“In the face of the hardships in our country, let us continue to exercise patience through perseverance as we bring all our challenges to God, trusting that He will reveal His righteousness and grant us justice in our times of distress,” he added.

He said that CAN would continue to speak and stand up against injustice and work for peace in a constructive way.

“As we march gallantly towards the next general elections, let us bear in mind that we have a stake in this country, and so refrain from engaging in acts that will destroy the fortunes and the prospects of this nation.

“Rather than take up arms to kill each other and terrify innocent Nigerians, adults in this nation should take up their voters’ card and go to the polls.

“We must resist any threat, strong or subtle, in whichever form to stop us from going out to vote on the day of elections,” Okoh emphasised.

The CAN president also urged Nigerians to shun vote-buying.

“Politicians who present some inducement to voters, especially on the polling day are not really interested in the welfare of the people.

“I counsel you to look out for politicians who are genuine and who are sincere to provide the basics that will be the catalyst for economic growth and development,” he said.

Okoh prayed God to rescue Nigeria from the hands of wicked people, grant peace to the country and help the people to love one another irrespective of religious and ethnic diversities.

Nigeria at 62: Gov Wike lambasts Buhari’s government

As Nigeria marked its 62nd Independence Day on Saturday, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike lambasted President Muhammadu Buhari’s government for failing to live up to expectations.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Gov Wike as saying under the watch of the Buhari government, infrastructure across all sectors, including roads, education and healthcare collapsed.

Wike stated this while appealing to the Supreme Court of Nigeria to give the case before it concerning the collection and distribution of Value Added Taxes generated from the State by the federal government the urgency it requires.

Governor Wike made the appeal at the match past and parade in commemoration of the 62nd independence of Nigeria at the Sharks Football Stadium in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

He explained that such urgency and eventual ruling of the case in favour of the State, will further add more financial resources that will accelerate the economic growth of Rivers State.

“We have also not given up in our determination to right the injustice associated with the collection and distribution of Value-Added Taxes generated from the State by the Federal Government just as we again call on the Supreme Court to please, treat this matter with the urgency that it requires.”

Governor Wike said since 1999 that the country returned to democracy, it has continued to witness deliberate constitutional distortions, institutional weaknesses and widespread corruption that have prevented Nigerians from enjoying a robust democratic practice.

He listed the absence of a free and fair elections, the rule of law and social justice as part of experiences that are refused to take root in Nigeria.

“This is not to say that Nigeria has not made any progress as a nation. Certainly, we have achieved some visible developmental strides and economic progress as Africa’s largest economy.

“The fact that we have remained together despite the recurrent conflicts and crisis of confidence is also worth celebrating as an achievement.

“But, after 62 years, Nigeria deserves more than what it has achieved and Nigerians likewise deserve much more than what their leaders have delivered to them with the country’s enormous natural and human resources.”

Governor Wike bemoaned the inability of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led federal government, over the last seven years, to keep the economic and social conditions within Nigeria from deteriorating.

He pointed to such inability as evidence that the APC led federal government is totally lost in what further measures it could take to stem or ameliorate the predicaments they have visited on Nigerians.

“Life is sacrosanct, but the present federal government has failed in the most basic duty to the nation to protect the lives and property of its citizens.

“Under their watch, infrastructure across all sectors, including roads, education and healthcare has collapsed. Tertiary education has remained comatose for over seven months and with no employment opportunities, the federal government continues to toy with the future of the youths.”

The Rivers State governor decried the situation where healthcare delivery is a nightmare across the country with ordinary citizens unable to access necessary medical services, basic diagnostics and medications at affordable rates in public hospitals.

He noted the spiraling crime and physical violence that are almost out of control across the country with the schools, churches and mosques no longer serving as safe places anymore.

“And with compulsive corruption, insecurity, low export earnings, protracted forex crisis and an economy so close to bankruptcy the untold suffering and hopeless future among Nigerians will continue if something is not done to improve the quality of political leadership in our country.”

Governor Wike however, stated that things can be better if there is the right political leadership in place that has the courage, decisive and purposeful in driving the country on a new path.

“However, let’s not forget that before the present deplorable state of affairs, we experienced significant economic growth, relative prosperity, a stable educational system and a relatively better quality of life for our people, under the Peoples Democratic Party.

“This showed that Nigeria’s current economic, social and security situation can rapidly be resolved with new leadership that is courageous, decisive, purposeful and able to take the country in a new direction that would curb corruption, stop unsustainable debts, and drive economic growth to create jobs and prosperity for all citizens.”

Governor Wike insisted that there is a need to have a new government that cares about the unity of the country and the wellbeing of its citizens.

Such government, Governor Wike said, should be one that is religiously committed to changing the present circumstances of the people and making life more meaningful for everyone.”

Governor Wike stressed that his administration is already performing like the expected new government at the national level by providing road infrastructure in quality and quantity that are unmatched by any previous government since the creation of the State.

“No State government, not even the Federal Government, can boast of the simultaneous construction of 12 flyovers and other major roads across the State in three years with Julius Berger Nigeria limited as the contractor; but that is what our government has successfully executed.”

Governor Wike emphasised that within the past seven years, his administration achieved so much because it was dogged in implementing various fiscal measures that have improved the State’s revenue base.

With such growth, Governor Wike said, existing hospitals have been renovated, abandoned ones completed and new ones delivered to improve access to health for Rivers people.

“We have expanded excess to quality education, including tertiary education with the successful establishment of the medical college and the four new campuses for the Rivers State University in Emohua, Ahoada, Etche and Tai Local Government Areas of the State.

“We have renovated existing hospitals, completed abandoned ones, delivered new ones, and are set to deliver the most advanced specialist hospital in entire West Africa for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and cardiovascular diseases here in Port Harcourt, which we believe will help the nation to stem medical tourism and conserve foreign exchange for the country.

“We have since started the payment of arrears of gratuities and death benefits to our senior citizens and legal beneficiaries and this will continue until all existing arrears of gratuities and death benefits are fully paid out.”

Speaking further, the Rivers State governor added that his administration significantly advanced the economic interest of Rivers State through securing important legal victories that helped in recovering several oil wells and gas fields hitherto denied to the State by the Federal Government.

“The 13% and other derivation funds from these oilfields have added appreciable resources to the State’s revenue base, which we are deploying to accelerate the development of our State.

“The roads and bridges we have built continue to stimulate economic growth and prosperity by providing safe and seamless commuting across the State for businesses, farmers and social endeavours.

“We have greatly enhanced the State’s judicial system and improved the living conditions of judicial officers serving in the State, including those serving in the Rivers State jurisdictions of federal courts to enhance the rule of law and social justice in the State.

“Additionally, the tremendous support we are giving to the federal security agencies has resulted in curbing crimes and made Rivers State one of the safest States in the country to invest, live and bring up our children.”

”I must confess that I am very pained by the recurring disruption to our tertiary education system.

”I am using this Independence Day celebration to re-iterate my call for the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to the classroom while assuring them to deal with their contending issues within the limits of the scarce resources available.

”This administration has made appreciable progress in redressing these issues that have been lingering for over eleven years.

According to him, this is in view of the fact that education is a leading determinant of economic growth and employment generation.

”As we put in place all measures to ensure that Nigeria takes her place in the Comity of Nations, we recognise the importance of a well-educated populace as a panacea to most of the challenges we face.

”We have, therefore, pursued policies and implemented programmes designed to create a literate and proficient society that ensures that citizens are availed with opportunities for life-long achievements.”

On health sector, the Nigerian leader revealed that his administration had also improved the nation’s health facilities, especially during and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said this had attracted commendation of the global community.

”As you are aware, Nigeria was one of the countries that defied global predictions of the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic because of our resilience, commitment and passion with which we individually and collectively managed the pandemic.”

He also disclosed that his administration embarked on addressing critical ecological challenges across the country, to mitigate the impact of Climate Change manifesting in the form of flood, soil erosion, desertification, air pollution amongst others.

According to the president, the Federal Government will continue to ensure that the nation’s infrastructure drive remains the key to Nigeria’s economic growth and for which every Nigerian will feel the impact.

He said Federal Government had already embarked on expanding ports operations to provide opportunities for the growth of the Nigerian economy.

”We have also continued to accelerate our infrastructure development through serviceable and transparent borrowing, improved capital inflow and increased revenue generation,” he said.

This, he said, was being carried out by expanding the tax bases and prudent management of investment proceeds in the Sovereign Wealth Fund.

On transportation, Buhari stated that his administration had continued to boost the railway infrastructure to further open up communities to economic activities.

He said already a good number of critical railway projects had been completed and at the same time, rehabilitating and upgrading obsolete equipment.

  • Buhari to Nigerians: I’ve resolved to bequeath lasting, sustainable democratic culture

Buhari to Nigerians: I’ve resolved to bequeath lasting, sustainable democratic culture

President Muhammadu Buhari says his efforts to uplift the quality of life of Nigerians will not be enough without a good governance system, anchored on electing credible leaders in free, fair, credible and transparent elections.

According to him, it is for this reason that he resolved to bequeath a sustainable democratic culture which will remain lasting.

The president stated this while addressing the nation in a broadcast as part of activities to commemorate the 62nd Independence Anniversary of the country on Saturday in Abuja.

He cited the signing of the Electoral Act 2021 as amended with landmark provisions as a further assurance for a more transparent and inclusive electoral process in the country.

”Having witnessed at close quarters, the pains, anguish and disappointment of being a victim of an unfair electoral process, the pursuit of an electoral system and processes that guarantee election of leaders by citizens remains the guiding light as I prepare to wind down our administration.

”You would all agree that the recent elections in the past two years in some states (Anambra, Ekiti and Osun) and a few federal constituencies, have shown a high degree of credibility, transparency and freedom of choice with the people’s votes actually counting.

”This I promise would be improved upon as we move towards the 2023 General Elections.

The president appealed that, as the transition process to another democratically elected government commenced, all aspirants should conduct issues-based campaigns devoid of hate speeches, negative and divisive tendencies.

The Nigerian leader also affirmed that his administration’s focussed intervention on Nigerians through the National Social Investment Programme, had since started yielding benefits.

He stated that his government had laid emphasis on infrastructure development with its attendant opportunities for job creation, employment generation and subsequent poverty reduction.

”There is hardly any ward, village or local government in Nigeria today that has not benefited from one of the following: N-Power, trader-moni, market moni, subsidised loans, business grants or Conditional Cash Transfers.

”All the aforementioned programmes along with various interventions by the National Social Investment Programme, direct support to victims of flooding and other forms of disasters, have provided succor to the affected Nigerians,” he said.

Buhari also advocated for more female participation in the forthcoming general elections while calling on youths to desist from being used by selfish politicians to cause social unrest.

”I also want to express my wish that we see more female and youth participation in the forthcoming electoral cycle.

”I am sure that our teeming and energetic youths now realise that violence generally mar elections, and so should desist from being used by politicians for this purpose.”

On  reforms in the public sector, the president acknowledged that such reforms had already yielded results, especially in the delivery of services.

He, therefore, urged the general public to demand for citizen-centred services from the relevant authorities.

On the international front, Buhari said the country had continued to take advantage of its bilateral and multilateral platforms to explore cooperation with friendly countries and partners whenever the areas of cooperation were to the advantage of Nigeria.

”Fellow Nigerians, in the past few years we have witnessed and overcome a good number of challenges that would ordinarily have destroyed our Nation.

” However, the indefatigable spirit of the Nigerian people has ensured that we overcome our challenges.

”It is in this spirit that I call on all of us to individually and collectively bring to the fore in dealing with all our development issues.

”I was called to serve, along with my team; I saw an opportunity to create a better Nigeria which we have done with the support of Nigerians.

”Almighty God and the good people of Nigeria supported us in laying a solid foundation for the Nigeria of our dreams.”

What President Buhari said in his 62nd Independence Day message to Nigerians

INDEPENDENCE DAY ADDRESS BY MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA DELIVERED ON THE OCCASION OF NIGERIA’S 62ND INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ON 1ST OCTOBER, 2022

    Fellow Nigerians,

I address you today, with a deep sense of gratitude to God and a high level of appreciation to all Nigerians whose tremendous goodwill gave me the opportunity to provide leadership for our great country at one of the trying times in her history.

2.Conscious that today’s address would be my last on an Independence Day as your President; I speak to the millions of Nigerians, who believed in me, propelled and stood by me in my quest to bequeath a country where all citizens have equal opportunities to achieve their lives desires in a peaceful atmosphere.

3.I am honoured to say that my story in the annals of Nigeria’s history is no household secret. My various attempts, failures and eventual success in being elected as a Democratic President in 2015 was made possible by the majority of Nigerians.

    4. When you elected me, I readily acknowledged that the tasks before me were daunting but surmountable because of the growing national consensus that our chosen route to national development was democracy.

5.This democracy was to be anchored on a clear understanding, application and the principles of separation of powers supported by a reformed public service that is more effective.

6.I then pledged to Improve the Economy, Tackle Corruption and Fight Insecurity and this was further strengthened by my commitment to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in ten years as the central plank of my second term in 2019.

7.To the Glory of God and His Grace as well as the commitment and passion displayed by many Nigerian supporters, we have made appreciable progress in these areas but not yet at our destination.

8.Mindful of the task before us, we took some time in settling down and we re-positioned the Economy by providing strategic interventions in core areas at both the Federal and Sub-National levels.

9.One of the areas where we have made significant progress is in the eradication of deeply entrenched corruption that permeates all facets of our national development.

10.We strengthened the Institutions for tackling corruption and also cultivated international support, which aided the repatriation of huge sums of money illegally kept outside the country.

11.The increasing number of prosecutions and convictions, with associated refunds of large sums of money is still ongoing. Furthermore, we would continue to block opportunities that encourage corrupt practices.

12.In order to address Insecurity, we worked methodically in reducing Insurgency in the North East, Militancy in the Niger Delta, Ethnic and Religious Tensions in some sections of Nigeria along with other problems threatening our country.

13.Our efforts in re-setting the economy manifested in Nigeria exiting two economic recessions by the very practical and realistic monetary and fiscal measures to ensure effective public financial management. In addition, the effective implementation of the Treasury Single Account and cutting down on the cost of governance also facilitated early exits from recessions.

14.Fellow Nigerians, this administration removed several decades uncertainty for potential Investors in the Oil & Gas sector with the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021. This landmark legislation created opportunities for foreign investments in addition to improving transparency in the management of the sector.

15.Our administration has given the desired priority to the Agricultural Sector through a series of incentives to Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises that resulted in creating millions of jobs. Leading this initiative, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s intervention in a number of areas as well as the Anchor Borrowers Programme had created the required leverages for Nigerians towards self-sufficiency in food and the necessary attraction for farming as a business.

16.The growing contribution of non-oil exports, especially in agriculture, information and communication technology as well as the performing arts to our national economy will enhance our foreign exchange earning capacity.

17.We are confronting current economic challenges such as debt burden, growing inflation, living standards and increasing unemployment accentuated by our growing youthful population. These problems are globally induced and we would continue to ensure that their negative effects are addressed in our policies.

18.This administration will continue to ensure that our fiscal policies are supported by a robust and contemporary monetary policy that recognises our peculiarities in the midst of the growing global economic difficulties.

19.This is evidenced by the recent Monetary Policy Committee decision to maintain all parameters, especially interest rates and marginally increased the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) from 14% to 15.5% and the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) from 27.5% to 32.5%. It is projected that this would further insulate our economy from over exposure to uncertainties at the international market by restraining growth in core inflation.

20.As we continue to de-escalate the security challenges that confronted us at inception of this administration, newer forms alien to our country began to manifest especially in the areas of kidnappings, molestations/killings of innocent citizens, banditry, all of which are being addressed by our security forces.

21.I share the pains Nigerians are going through and I assure you that your resilience and patience would not be in vain as this administration continues to reposition as well as strengthen the security agencies to enable them to deal with all forms of security challenges.

22.At the inception of this administration in 2015, I provided the funding requirements of the security agencies which was also improved in my second tenure in 2019 to enable them to surmount security challenges. We will continue on this path until our efforts yield the desired results.

    23. As we put in place all measures to ensure that Nigeria takes her place in the Comity of Nations, we recognize the importance of a well-educated populace as a panacea to most of the challenges we face.

24.We have, therefore, pursued policies and implemented programmes designed to create a literate and proficient society that ensures that citizens are availed with opportunities for life-long achievements.

25.I must confess that I am very pained by the recurring disruption to our tertiary education system and I am using this Independence Day celebration to re-iterate my call for the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to the classroom while assuring them to deal with their contending issues within the limits of the scarce resources available. 26.The Federal Government will continue to mobilize resources both internationally and nationally towards funding education to ensure that our citizens are well educated and skilled in various vocations in view of the fact that education is a leading determinant of economic growth and employment generation.

27.Fellow Nigerians, we have also improved our health facilities, especially during and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which attracted commendation of the global community.

28.As you are aware, Nigeria was one of the countries that defied global predictions of the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic because of our resilience, commitment and passion with which we individually and collectively managed the pandemic.

29.This administration embarked on addressing critical ecological challenges across the country in order to mitigate the impact of Climate Change manifesting in the form of flood, soil erosion, desertification, air pollution amongst others

34.I am pleased to inform my fellow citizens that besides our emphasis on infrastructural development with its attendant opportunities for job creation, employment generation and subsequent poverty reduction, our focussed intervention directly to Nigerians through the National Social Investment Programme is also yielding benefits.

35.There is hardly any ward, village or local government in Nigeria today that has not benefited from one of the following: N-Power, trader-moni, market moni, subsidized loans, business grants or Conditional Cash Transfers.

36.All the aforementioned programmes along with various interventions by the National Social Investment programme, direct support to victims of flooding and other forms of disasters have provided succor to the affected Nigerians.

“Though Nigeria is beset with challenges that range from inadequacies of our economic plans to cover a large percentage of our people who live below the poverty line to security skirmishes that daily threaten the safety of lives and property of Nigerians, the root cause of these problems is traceable to the increasing lack of unity amongst us.

“However, I assure that as one people and under the canopy of one country sharing in one future, we will surmount our challenges and enthrone the Nigeria of our dreams,” Abubakar said.

He urged all Nigerians to give the issue of building national unity primary attention as the citizens go into the general elections next year.

“Nigerians should elect leaders who are individuals with proven track records of being protagonists of unity and peace.

“I believe that when we fix the issues that continue to compromise our national unity, we would invariably fix issues that upset our peace and security and subsequently create an environment that can encourage economic prosperity”, Abubakar said.

The presidential flagbearer of the PDP called on all friends of Nigeria in the international community to continue to have confidence in the country because, “as a people we never give up.”

He called on all people of faith across the country not to relent in their prayers to God to keep Nigeria as a country of peace and prosperity for the good of all its people.

62nd Independence: Nigeria remains the face of Africa – Amb Adesina

Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Togo, Ambassador Debo Adesina in his anniversary message to Nigerians has said Nigeria remains the face of Africa contrary to negative narratives.

This was contained in a good will message to he sent Nigerians in Togo to commemorate its 62nd independence.

He said: “Nationhood is perpetually aspirational. It evolves and develops, and will continually and forever evolve and develop.

“May Nigeria, in peace progress and prosperity, continue to happen!

“I ask all Nigerians, in Togo and everywhere, to constantly display that excellence of character that is native to Nigeria, that makes ours the nation which all Africans look up to for direction.

” In return, we must give all Africans, and indeed every Black Person everywhere in the world, more than enough reasons to repose trust and confidence in us
and lean on us to give them a truly glorious identity.

“Our country, is a collection of the most endowed peoples of the world, is blessed beyond measure in men and materials. Over the years, Nigeria has been the courageous combatant in the battle for the liberation of Africa and her children.

“Nigeria is the anchor for the ship of Africa, indeed the Black race!

Chinua Achebe, in his inimitable style, reminisced on a Nigeria of yore and
    declared,”There was a country.”

Today, I dare say and declare, there is a country, Nigeria, the banner of which we all must carry aloft with joy and pride!

Contrary to the negative narrative, “Nigeria happened to me…” ours is a country happening for good, the good of our people, the good of Africa, the Black race and the whole of humanity.

Our duty as Nigerians abroad is to live this reality and be, in all we do and say, the African
and human exemplars that we truly are!

    Long live Nigeria!
