Tinubu mourns as former Indian PM dies at 92

Former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh, considered the architect of economic reforms that opened up the world’s most populous country more three decades ago, has died, aged 92 years.

“India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist.

“He served in various government positions as well, including as finance minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years … As our prime minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” wrote current Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X.

Singh led India for a decade, from 2004 to 2014. But it is perhaps as finance minister that he left his legacy. Facing soaring oil prices, billions in debt, and dwindling foreign exchange reserves, India ushered in landmark reforms on July 24, 1991.

Singh effectively ended India’s economic isolation, dismantled licensing controls and trade barriers, devalued the rupee and broke up state monopolies.

“No power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come,” said Singh at the time, quoting French author Victor Hugo.

The idea was to ensure India’s “emergence as a major economic power in the world,” said Singh, who was educated at Cambridge and Oxford universities in Britain.

“Let the whole world hear it loud and clear,” the normally soft-spoken politician said, “India is now wide awake. We shall overcome.”

He became the country’s first Sikh prime minister in 2004, when Indian National Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi stunned supporters by refusing the post and nominated her most trusted lieutenant.

Singh headed the United Progressive Alliance coalition government for two consecutive five-year terms.

Singh’s coalition government faced a severe credibility crisis in the second term, tarnished by allegations of large-scale corruption, weak leadership, slowing economic growth and an inability to control inflation.

Supporters point out major achievements of Singh’s government, such as pulling millions out of poverty with social sector schemes.

He was taken to the emergency room on Thursday evening after losing consciousness at home, according to a statement from the AIIMS hospital in New Delhi. He was then declared dead at the hospital. He had been receiving treatment for age-related illnesses.

Tinubu mourns ex-Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh

President Bola Tinubu has extended condolences to the government and people of India on the death of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

Singh, India’s prime minister between 2004 and 2014, died Thursday at the age of 92, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the president’s spokesman, said in a statement.

He said Singh’s official visit to Nigeria in 2007 was historic, and that he earned the honour of addressing a joint session of the National Assembly, a privilege accorded to only a few global leaders.

Tinubu paid tribute to Singh’s dedication to strengthening the Nigeria-India relationship, saying that his diplomatic efforts remained a reference point in the history of the bilateral relations between the two nations.

The president recounted the establishment of the Strategic Partnership between Nigeria and India under Singh’s tenure, which has continued to flourish, driving political and economic prosperity for both countries.

Tinubu further lauded Singh’s efforts to forge improved cooperation in defence trade, culture, education, health, science and technology, and ICT.

He saluted Singh’s role in steering India’s economic reforms during globally challenging times. He prayed that the departed prime minister’s dedication to service would inspire the people of India.

India slams Binance with $2.25m fine

Global cryptocurrency exchange firm, Binance has been slammed with a fine of 188.2 million rupees ($2.25 million) in India for violating local anti-money laundering regulations.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Binance was handed the $2.25 million fine by India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).

India requires virtual digital asset service providers like crypto exchanges to be registered with the FIU as a reporting entity and comply with its anti-money laundering rules.

Binance did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment, according to Reuters.

In May, Binance had registered with the FIU as the exchange sought to resume operations in the country after the watchdog issued show-cause notices to nine offshore exchanges operating in violation of local rules.

The watchdog had also asked the ministry of electronics and information technology to block online access to the exchanges.

Crypto exchange KuCoin had registered with FIU in March but faced a smaller penalty amount of 3.45 million rupees.

Canada’s anti-money laundering agency had also imposed a fine of $4.38 million on Binance in May for violation of anti-money laundering rules.

Changpeng Zhao, the former chief executive of Binance, was sentenced to four months in prison in May by U.S. District Judge Richard Jones in Seattle after pleading guilty to violating the country’s laws against money laundering (Reuters).

Elections: Indians head to polls with 968 million eligible voters

World’s most populous nation indian will be heading to polls with about 968 million registered voters set to cast their ballots over the course of 47 days.

The election has been tagged world’s biggest election by Western media.

Voting in India’s six-week election commenced on Friday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Hindu nationalist party expected to secure a clear victory.

Every eligible voter in the country’s 28 states and eight union territories will have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.

The Election has been labelled the biggest democratic exercise ever.

India, the most populous country in the world, embarks on an extensive electoral process spanning over a month and a half, necessitating meticulous logistical planning.

While voting is completed in a single day in the smallest states and territories administered by the federal government, larger states witness voting spread over two or four days.

In states with very large populations like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, voting occurs across all seven phases.

The electoral process commenced on Friday with the first phase of voting, wherein 102 of the 543 constituencies of India’s lower house of Parliament, the Lok Sabha, are decided. These elections determine the allocation of all 543 seats.

India is composed of 36 states and federally governed territories, each with its own unique voting dynamics and considerations.

968 eligible voters will determine the fate of 543 politicians who will be elected to the Lok Sabha, with two additional members nominated, bringing the total strength of the house to 545.

To facilitate this massive undertaking, there are 1.5 million polling booths and five million electronic voting machines deployed across the country.

Gender-wise, the voter demographic is balanced, with 497 million male voters comprising over 51% of the total, while female voters number at 471 million, reflecting a steady increase over the years.

Additionally, India sees significant participation from its youth, with 18 million first-time voters in the 18–19 age group and 197.4 million in the 20–29 age group.

NDLEA arrests India-bound passenger who excreted 80 wraps of cocaine

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested a Delhi, India-bound passenger at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja on March 31 for ingesting 80 wraps of cocaine.

Its spokesman, Mr Femi Babafemi stated on Sunday in Abuja that the passenger was to board a Doha-bound flight en-route Delhi using a Liberian passport with the name: Carr Bismark, when he was arrested.

A body scan on the suspect revealed the ingestion of the illicit drugs, he explained.

Babafemi added that preliminary checks showed the passenger’s real name to be Freeman Ogbonna.

The NDLEA placed the passenger under observation and in a short while he started to manifest signs of discomfort.

“Obviously choked by the volume of illicit drugs in his stomach and another substance taken to hold back excretion, the suspect soon began to retch, vomited and excreted wraps of cocaine simultaneously.

“The suspect who claimed he was recruited into drug trafficking by one of his relatives, eventually passed out a total of 80 wraps of cocaine.

“He vomited or excreted the drugs, weighing 889gms over a period of four days.

“The great risk almost took his life.

“Ogbonna said he was given the drugs to swallow at a hotel in Ikeja with a promise of N300,000 reward if he successfully delivers the consignment in India,’’ Babafemi stated.

Also on April 3, the NDLEA arrested a drug mule at the airport on his way to Oman.

Its operatives discovered a false bottom in his backpack and on the sides concealing illicit drugs and also swiftly moved in on a man who accompanied the suspect to the airport.

The second man was later discovered to have been the one who recruited the passenger to traffic the drugs.

“The suspect said he returned from Dubai some years ago, but still had a valid residence permit on his passport.

“He claimed he was promised N1.5 million if he successfully delivered the consignment in Oman, while his recruiter, was to be paid N200,000.

“A charm was found in one of the passenger’s bags when they were searched and another was found on his person.

“The drug mule confessed that he travelled to Ibadan earlier where a cleric made the charms for him to evade arrest during the trip.

“Another charm was found on the recruiter who claimed the charms were procured at a cost of N70,000,’’ Babafemi added.

  • Nigeria, next investment destination of choice after China, India – Edun

Nigeria, next investment destination of choice after China, India – Edun

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the economy, Mr Wale Edun, says after China and India, Nigeria is the largest economy that investors are running after.

Edun said this in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday in Marrakech, Morocco, on the sidelines of the ongoing 2023 World Bank/International Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings.

He, however, advised that the country had to be ready to attract such investments, and to turn initial interest into investment in Agriculture, solid minerals, industry, manufacturing and import substitution.

According to the minister, these are the areas spurring investors’ interest in coming to Nigeria and investing by Foreign Direct Investment.

“Such investors also include those that are already in Nigeria.

“Our wish is to grow the Nigerian economy, reduce poverty, and make life better for all Nigerians. That is the determination of President Bola Tinubu and members of his administration.

“We are laying the groundwork for achieving that by making the tough decisions,” he said.

He said that he was at the World Bank/IMF meetings in Marrakech to get a sense of what the whole world thought of Nigeria.

He said that the reaction so far had been positive, adding that Nigeria had been appointed to chair the African Governors’ Forum of the World Bank.

“The opportunity is now there to unite the African continent, the finance ministers of Africa, the economic leaders and representatives of governments.

“They should unite and argue for a fair and just energy transition, for instance.

“Nigeria has the opportunity now as the chairman of the African Governors’ Forum to unite the continent to enable African countries speak with one voice and get a better deal for Africa,” he said.

India stops issuing Canadians visas after row over killing of Sikh

India has stopped issuing visas to Canadians following tensions over the killing in the western Canadian province of British Columbia of a Canadian citizen who was a Sikh separatist.

Visas are not being issued due to security concerns, India’s Foreign Ministry said in New Delhi at a news conference on Thursday.

“Security threats faced by our embassy and consulates in Canada have affected normal functioning.

“Accordingly, our embassy and consulates are temporarily unable to issue visas,’’ the ministry said.

Canada also plans to temporarily reduce its embassy staff in India, but said its embassy and consulates will remain open.

The Canadian high commission in India said it will continue to monitor “the safety and security of its missions and personnel as it maintains a strict security protocol to respond to any events.’’

A high commission is the main representative office of a Commonwealth country in another Commonwealth country and is the equivalent of an embassy.

The authority said some diplomats had received threats “on various social media platforms’’ and it is therefore reviewing its staffing in India.

A spokesman for the Canadian embassy could not be reached immediately by dpa.

Relations between the two countries are currently at a low point after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of the targeted killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

He is a well-known advocate of an independent state for people of the Sikh religious community on India’s territory.

Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, was shot dead in June.
