“This is the best time to invest in Nigeria” – Elumelu tells Indian investors

Heirs Holdings Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu C.F.R., urged the Indian private sector to seize the opportunity to invest in Nigeria, during the Nigeria-India Presidential Roundtable and Conference on Wednesday, September 6th, 2023, in New Delhi, India, jointly organised by the High Commission of Nigeria to India, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Nigeria-India Business Council (NIBC).

Elumelu, who has built pan-African financial service businesses and now controls significant power and natural resources operations, all focused on value creation in Africa, was in Delhi for the G20 Summit, both as an invitee of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and as co-chair of the Business 20 (B20) Action Council focusing on African economic integration, the private sector counterpart to the G20.

Investment pledges amounting to nearly $14 billion U.S. dollars were committed during the Nigeria-India Presidential Roundtable and Conference in New Delhi convened by H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

During a keynote address, Elumelu invited Indian private sector leaders to join him and other global investors in accessing the rapidly evolving Nigerian economy, home to 20% of Africans and one of the largest consumer populations globally:

“This is the time to invest in Nigeria. I speak as a private sector investor in Nigeria, the companies in our Group’s investment portfolio demonstrate the opportunity. I believe you also can take advantage of our track record and success.”

At the Presidential roundtable, hosted by H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Indian investors pledged investments of nearly $14 billion to Nigeria, following the Nigerian president’s commitment to create the enabling environment for foreign investments to thrive.

“Nigeria is a huge market; over 200 million people with the largest economy on the continent.

Most importantly, the population is not just over 200 million people; the demography of the population is exciting. We have a cohort of young people who are there to consume, and we also have people who are intelligent, energetic, hardworking, who provide the human capital that investors need to drive their businesses”

Tony Elumelu, was recently named co-chair of the Business 20 (B20) Action Council focusing on African economic integration, alongside Sunil Mittal, Founder of Bharti Enterprises (Owners of Airtel). Established in 2010 within the G20, the B20 comprises corporate business enterprises and organisations and serves as the official platform for dialogue between the G20 and the global business community.

SAD! Heavy rains claim over 20 lives within 24hrs in Himachal Pradesh

Tragedy has struck the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh as heavy rains unleash devastating landslides and flash floods, resulting in the loss of more than 20 lives within the last 24 hours. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu confirmed the grim toll, attributing the casualties to the relentless downpour wreaking havoc across the picturesque hill state.

The deluge took a particularly tragic turn in Shimla town, where a temple collapsed following a landslide. Nine bodies were recovered from the debris, highlighting the perilous conditions brought about by the incessant rains.

Other parts of Himachal Pradesh also experienced the wrath of nature, with a flash flood and cloudburst causing an additional 14 fatalities. The region is a popular tourist destination, attracting thousands with its charming weather and breathtaking landscapes. However, the heavy monsoon rains have triggered flooding, landslides, and cloudbursts, disrupting travel and causing immense damage.

As videos circulated on social media capturing the destructive impact of the downpour, Chief Minister Sukhu urged residents and visitors alike to stay indoors and avoid venturing near rivers. Meanwhile, the neighboring state of Uttarakhand has also been grappling with relentless rain, leading to the suspension of the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage, which draws scores of tourists to its revered Hindu shrines.

The recent tragedies have reignited concerns among environmentalists over the sustainability of tourist-driven development in ecologically fragile regions like the Indian Himalayas.

The combination of unchecked infrastructure expansion and extreme weather events continues to pose a significant threat, prompting a reevaluation of policy measures to safeguard these vulnerable areas.

  • India-bound ‘couple’ excretes 184 wraps of cocaine

India-bound ‘couple’ excretes 184 wraps of cocaine

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) have arrested a fake couple, Kingsley and Roseline Ilonzeh for ingesting 184 wraps of cocaine.

The Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi, said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

He said that the suspected drug traffickers were purportedly going for medical treatment in India.

Babafemi said that the drugs weigh 3.322Kg, while another 100 grammes of the drug was concealed in the woman’s private part.

He said that the two suspects were intercepted at the Screening Point 1, Terminal 1 of the international wing of the Lagos airport on Aug. 1, while attempting to board an Ethiopian airline flight to India.

Babafemi further said that though their travel documents showed consistency in their names and depicted them as couple, an NDLEA officer however, decided to subject them to body scan.

He said that the scan confirmed the couple ingested drugs as a result of which they were later placed on excretion observation at the agency’s facility.

”Their travel documents identify the man as Ilonzeh Kingsley Onyebuchi and the lady to be Ilonzeh Roseline Nonyelum,

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the intending passengers are not a couple but obtained the travel documents in the same surname to beat security checks at the airport.

“The lady later gave her real name as Ngogbike Nkechi. During interview, she confessed that she was recruited in her Church in Aba, Abia where she lives.

“The suspect, Ilonzeh Roseline Nonyelum (aka Ngogbike Nkechi) states further that she is a divorcee and that Kingsley, with whom she is travelling is not her husband but connected only for the purpose of the illicit drug business trip.

“She said that Kingsley, her arranged husband brought the pellets of cocaine to ingest her in the hotel where they both lodged in separate rooms on July, 31, ” he said.

The NDLEA spokesperson said that after their arrest, a thorough search conducted on her led to the discovery of a big size wrap of cocaine that weighed 100 grammes which she inserted into her private part.

He said that the suspected drug trafficker confessed that she was promised $5,000 upon successful delivery of the drug in India.

Babafemi said that in his own statement, Kingsley, who was into clothing business in Onitsha, Anambra claimed he was promised $2,000 after a successful delivery of the drug in India.

“A further search of the agency’s crime database reveals that Kingsley also obtained his travel documents with fake identity for the trip.

“Indeed, it has been established that he was arrested by NDLEA operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja on March 19, 2022, for ingesting 100 wraps of cocaine weighing 2.243kgs upon his arrival from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on board an Ethiopian airline flight.

“His travel documents then contained his real name: Uwaezuoke Ikenna Christian,” he said.

He noted that after his arrest at the Abuja airport on March 19, 2022, with another suspect, Iro Elvis Uche, who also ingested 65 wraps of cocaine with a gross weight of 1.376kgs, Uwaezuoke was subsequently arraigned.

Babafemi said that he was arraigned before Justice Zainab Abubakar of the Federal High Court Abuja with charge number: FHC/ABJ/CR/438/2022.

He said that the suspect was eventually granted bail by the court, pending the conclusion of his trial.

”He is still on the court bail when he was arrested at the Lagos airport for a similar offence on  Aug. 1.

“Ilonzeh Kingsley Onyebuchi (aka Uwaezuoke Ikenna Christian) excreted a total of 82 wraps of cocaine with a gross weight of 1.822kgs in five excretions.

“Ilonzeh Roseline Nonyelum (aka Ngogbike Nkechi) ingested 101 wraps in four excretions with a big size wrap of the substance recovered from her private part, all weighing 1.50kgs, ” he said.

Thousands protest mob assault of Women who were paraded naked in remote Indian border state

Thousands of people, mostly women, held a massive sit-in in India’s violence-wracked northeastern state of Manipur on Saturday to demand the immediate arrest of anyone who took part in the harrowing May assault of two women who were paraded around naked and molested by a mob in an attack that was caught on video.

The leaders of religious and women’s groups addressed the nearly 15,000 protesters, who also called for the firing of Biren Singh, the top elected official in the state where more than 130 people have been killed since violence between two dominant ethnic groups erupted in early May. The protest was held in Churachandpur, a town 65 kilometers, 40 miles, south of Imphal, the state capital.

Manipur has been the scene of a near-civil war that was sparked by Christian Kukis protesting against a demand by the mostly Hindu Meiteis for a special status that would let them buy land in the hills populated by Kukis and other tribal groups, as well as a guaranteed share of government jobs.

A video showing the women being assaulted triggered widespread outrage and has been widely shared on social media despite the government largely blocking the Internet and keeping journalists out of the remote state. The footage shows the two naked women surrounded by scores of young men who grope their genitals and drag them to a field.

The women are from the Kuki-Zo community, according to the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, a tribal organisation in Manipur. One of them told The Associated Press that the men who assaulted them were part of a Meitei mob that had earlier torched their village.

“They forced us to remove our clothes and said we will be killed if we don’t do as told. Then they made us walk naked. They abused us. They touched us everywhere … on our breasts, our genitals,” she said by phone from Manipur.

The woman said the duo was then led into a field where they were both sexually assaulted. The two women are now safe in a refugee camp.

Police said the assault occurred May 4, a day after the violence between the Kukis and Meiteis started. According to a police complaint filed on May 18, the mob attacked the family of the two women and killed its two male members. The complaint alleges rape and murder by “unknown miscreants.”

The emergence and widespread sharing of the video led India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, to break his more than two months of public silence over the ethnic clashes in Manipur, saying Thursday that the attack on the women was unforgivable.

The Manipur state government on Saturday announced a fifth arrest in the attack. Rajiv Singh, the state’s director-general of police, said officers were carrying out raids to arrest other suspects.

The deadly clashes have persisted despite the army’s presence in Manipur, a state of 3.2 million people tucked in the mountains on India’s border with Myanmar that is now divided into two ethnic zones. More than 60,000 people have fled to packed relief camps.

Nearly 400 men and women also held a protest in the Indian capital with similar demands. They carried placards reading “We demand action against the perpetrators” and ”Resign, Biren Singh.”

In Manipur state, the protesters assembled at a “Wall of Remembrance” site in an open ground in Churachandpur, a stronghold of the Kuki tribe, where they kept dummy coffins of people from their minority community who have been killed in the violence.

Ngaineikim, the chairperson of the Kuki Women’s Organisation for Human Rights, accused Singh, who belongs to the majority Meiti community, of orchestrating atrocities and then expressing sympathy for the victims.

Singh did not immediately comment on the calls to resign, but on Thursday, he said an investigation was underway to ensure “strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment. Let it be known, there is absolutely no place for such heinous acts in our society.”

India: Meet the richest beggar in the world who reportedly worth $900K

A recent report by the Economic Times has revealed that Bharat Jain, who can be seen roaming around and begging in India’s financial capital Mumbai, is probably the wealthiest beggar globally.

In India’s large begging fraternity, Jain has emerged as the ‘real family man’, by earning enormous wealth while raising his family which includes his father, brother, wife and two sons,.

According to the report, Bharat Jain has accumulated a net worth of $900k (Rs 7.5 crore) despite his sluggish beginnings. His monthly income varies from Rs 60,000 to 75,000.

The man has been relentlessly begging at prime locations in Mumbai, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus railway station (CSMT) and Azad Maidan.

Notably, Jain also owns an INR 1.2 crore flat in Mumbai and owns two shops in Thane which earn him more than Rs 30,000 in monthly rent.

Although his children received their education from a convent school, Jain himself faced financial instability that prevented him from pursuing formal education.

Despite being the world’s richest beggar, he has not let himself detach from his roots as he continues to beg to date. While regular workers struggle to earn a few hundred rupees working tirelessly throughout the day, Bharat Jain earns more than Rs 2000 in his 10 to 12-hour long ‘shift’.

While other members of his family run a stationery store, they consistently advise Jain to refrain from begging. Despite their advice, Jain continues with his ‘occupation’ of begging.
