Nigerian drug kingpin arrested by Police anti-narcotic wing in India

27-year-old Nigerian national who allegedly is a major operator in the gang supplying MDMA in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Ken alias Ebuka Victor Anayo, has been arrested by the anti-narcotic wing of Thrissur city police in India.

According to a police statement on Thursday, they zeroed in on him by chasing the leads received during the probe of a case relating to the seizure of 196 gms of MDMA from Mannuthy on May 13, this year.

During the interrogation of the arrested accused in that case, Burhanudeen from Chavakkad, police could identify that he was sourcing MDMA from Sudanese national Muhammed Babiker Ali and Palestine national Hassan.

Later, the duo were arrested from Bengaluru, and 300 gms of MDMA was seized from them. Their interrogation revealed that another Sudanese was supplying MDMA to them.

The accused gave police the name of the suspect as Ken, and it took them three months to elicit more details about his hideout in Delhi.

Ken was arrested from the ‘Nigerian Colony’ in Delhi, where many chronic offenders are allegedly residing, with Delhi Police’s help. He was produced at the court in Saket, Delhi and detained in Tihar Jail for three days.

Ken was later brought to Thrissur with the court’s permission, the release said. Police said Ken did not have a passport or visa and only had a refugee certificate.

Explaining the importance of Ken’s arrest, the police said though arrest of people peddling drugs was quite common, it was rare that the main suppliers were booked.

Police officers who arrested Ken included Mannuthy police station SI N Pradeep and anti-narcotic wing of the city police SIs NG Suvrathakumar and P Rakesh.

At least 31 dead, several hospitalized in India’s Bihar after drinking toxic alcohol

At least 31 people have died and several others hospitalized in India’s Bihar state after drinking toxic alcohol.

The deaths happened mainly in two villages in the impoverished eastern state, where the sale and consumption of liquor were banned in 2016 after women’s groups campaigned against poor workers splurging their meager incomes on drinking.

Such bans are in force in several Indian states, driving a thriving black market for cheap alcohol made in unregulated backstreet distilleries that kills hundreds of people every year.

In the latest incident, men in Saran district, nearly 60km (37 miles) north of the state capital Patna, began vomiting on Tuesday before their condition deteriorated.

Several people died on the way to the hospital and others died while being treated on Wednesday and Thursday, with local media reports putting the toll at 31. Officials fear the death toll could further rise.

Senior police officer, Santosh Kumar, said several of the hospitalized people have lost their eyesight.

He added that authorities cracked down on illicit alcohol shops in the area. “We have arrested over a dozen liquor traders and detained some others,” Kumar said.

Several opposition parties, including the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), held protests on Thursday outside the state legislature building to demand the state’s liquor ban be scrapped and some monetary compensation provided to the bereaved families.

Sushil Modi, the state BJP leader, said more than 1,000 people have died after drinking tainted liquor since the ban was imposed six years ago.

Bihar’s chief minister, Nitish Kumar, rejected the opposition’s demands and said the ban on the sale of liquor was “not my personal wish but a response to the cries of the women of the state”.

“Those who drink liquor will obviously die. We have an example in this case,” he added.

Of the estimated five billion liters of alcohol drunk every year in the country, about 40 percent is illegally produced, according to the International Spirits and Wine Association of India.

India Bridge Collapse: Dozens killed, several people injured and trapped

At least 60 people have died after a cable bridge carrying hundreds collapsed into a river in India.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Sunday evening at the Machchu River in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

Several people were injured and trapped underneath the bridge after the accident, leaving officials to fear that the death count could increase.

The collapse occurred in Morbi, about 125 miles from the state capital of west Ahmedabad. The bridge had just reopened after undergoing renovation four days ago.

TV footage showed dozens of people clinging onto the cables and twisted remains of the collapsed bridge as emergency teams struggled to rescue them. Some clambered up the broken structure to try to make their way to the river banks, while others swam to safety.

It is unclear how many people were on the bridge when it collapsed. However, local media reported that more than 400 people were on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

Rescue operations are “in full swing,” and assistance is being provided to those affected, Modi wrote.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the 230-metre historical bridge was built during British rule in the 19th century. It had been closed for renovation for six months and was reopened for the public last week.

Journalist Bhargav Parikh, based in Ahmedabad, said many tourists were in Gujarat because of religious holidays. The bridge is a tourist attraction that draws many sight-seers during the festive season when Diwali and Chhath Puja are celebrated.

  • Indians delight in Rishi Sunak’s rise to UK PM on Diwali

Indians delight in Rishi Sunak’s rise to UK PM on Diwali

Many Indians are delighted at the prospect of Rishi Sunak becoming the first person of Indian origin to become British prime minister, just as Hindus across the world celebrate Diwali.

Sunak was set to take the top job after his rivals Boris Johnson and Penny Mordaunt withdrew from the race to replace Liz Truss as leader of the Conservative Party.

Truss quit after a month and a half as her support evaporated and Sunak was poised to formally take over as prime minister later on Monday or Tuesday.

Sunak’s expected rise to the premiership had already made it to the front pages of most Indian newspapers – alongside the Indian cricket team’s win over arch-rivals Pakistan in a T20 World Cup match late on Sunday.

Some Indians said on social media that Sunak becoming prime minister this year would be even more special as India recently celebrated 75 years of its independence from British colonial rule.

“This (Diwali) is very special for India’s magnificent cricket victory and in all likelihood, Rishi Sunak, a person of Indian origin, a practising Hindu and our own Narayana Murthy’s son-in-law, becoming prime minister of UK,” Chennai resident D. Muthukrishnan wrote on Twitter, referring to the founder of Indian software giant Infosys Ltd.

“Rishi Sunak took oath as an MP on (Hindu holy book) Bhagavad Gita.

“If he repeats the same for taking oath as prime minister, what a day it is for India, that too on our 75th year of independence from Britain.”

Former British Chancellor of the Exchequer, or finance minister, Sunak, 42, is a practising Hindu and is known to celebrate the festival of lights.

He has also been photographed lighting candles outside No 11 Downing Street to mark the occasion.
