Indonesia releases final report on fatal January 2021 plane crash

Indonesia’s transportation safety body has released the final report on the passenger plane crash that killed all 62 people on board in January 2021, disclosing that the captain’s reliance on the autopilot system may have contributed to the accident.

The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) in the report released on Thursday disclosed that the Sriwijaya Air pilot may have failed to take corrective action when the plane’s throttle system malfunctioned because he was complacent about the aircraft’s automatic system.

“Complacency about the automation system and confirmation bias may have led to reduced monitoring of instruments and other circumstances,’’ KNKT disclosed in the report.

The Boeing 737-500 plummeted into the Java Sea minutes after take-off from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Jan. 9, last year.

Investigators said the aircraft had problems with its automatic throttle system.

Its left-engine throttle lever moved backward, causing the engine to have less power and the plane to roll onto its side before it crashed, the investigation report said.

Sriwijaya Air flight 182 was en route from Jakarta to Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan province on Borneo Island when it crashed.

Pilots on earlier flights had reported that the throttle system of the aircraft had malfunctioned, but those problems had been reported as successfully fixed, the report said.

The accident was the fourth major air crash in Indonesia in six years.

In October 2018, a Boeing 737 MAX belonging to Indonesia’s largest budget carrier, Lion Air, crashed into the Java Sea, killing all 189 people on board.

The aircraft’s faulty new anti-stall system was blamed for the crash, as well as that of another 737 Max in Ethiopia that killed 157 people in March 2019.

33 minors among dead in Indonesian football stampede

At least 33 minors were among those killed in a stampede at an Indonesian football stadium at the weekend, an official confirmed on Tuesday.

The youngest identified so far out of the 125 people killed was a toddler about three or four years old, said Nahar, a deputy at the Ministry for Women Empowerment and Child Protection.

“This still can change because we have not received all the information from families of the victims,’’ Nahar told dpa.

The national police earlier on Monday sacked the Malang district police chief, Ferli Hidayat, as part of an investigation into the stampede on Saturday at the Kanjuruhan Stadium.

This is among the world’s worst sports disasters.

Nine other commanding officers were suspended and under questioning on suspicion of ordering security personnel to fire tear gas inside the stadium.

However, chaos erupted after thousands of fans invaded the pitch as hosts Arema FC lost 3-2 to rival East Java club Persebaya Surabaya.

Police fired tear gas to try to quell the pitch invaders, sending spectators scrambling to the exit gates.

The deadly stampede prompted Indonesian President, Joko Widodo to order the suspension of the top-flight Liga 1 competition pending a review.

Most of the victims died of a lack of oxygen and from being trampled during the stampede, police said. More than 300 people were injured, some seriously, officials said.

The use of tear gas raised questions about whether security personnel had followed proper procedures in dealing with a crowd inside a stadium.

Indonesia Pitch Stampede: It’s dark day for football – FIFA

Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) President, Gianni Infantino, has said that the stampede that happened at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia was a dark day for football.
The incident claimed 174 lives after police fired tear gas in the air to disperse angry fans who invaded the pitch after Persebaya Surabaya beat Arema FC in East Java on Saturday.
According to East Java Police Chief, Nico Afinta said about 300 Indonesians were injured and taken to hospitals for treatment but disclosed some died on the road.
Meanwhile, in an address  on Sunday in Zurich, Infantino said the whole world is still in Shock over the incident
He said, “The football world is in a state of shock following the tragic incidents that have taken place in Indonesia at the end of the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at the Kanjuruhan Stadium

“This is a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives following this tragic incident.”

FIFA, the international football governing body, bans tear gas at football stadiums.

“Together with FIFA and the global football community, all our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, those who have been injured, together with the people of the Republic of Indonesia, the Asian Football Confederation, the Indonesian Football Association, and the Indonesian Football League, at this difficult time.” Infantino added.

Liga 1 has since been suspended temporarily by the Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, to allow investigations and improvement of safety policies going forward.

[Video]: Viral clip of a woman swallowed by Python surfaces online

A viral video of a python that swallowed a full grown adult has surfaced online and it has set tongues wagging on the internet.

Upon citing the very big  10 meters long Python where it was hibernating in what seem like a carnal, a gathering of people were seen trying to pull it out from its hideout.

The incident was said to have happened in the far East nation of Indonesia.

In a bid to rescue the victim, the python was brought out and  cut open only to realize that it has swallowed a full grown female adult.

Apparently, the python had bitten the victim before tying itself round it to squeeze her before swallowing her.

However, after it was cut open, the victim had already given up the ghost as a result of the pressure and heat faced in the belly of the Python.

Indonesia announces ‘Nusantara’ as new capital

Indonesia’s new national capital, to be built on Borneo Island, would be named “Nusantara”, a minister said on Monday.

The national parliament is expected to pass a bill on the new capital on Tuesday, paving the way for the start of its construction this year.

“I have received a confirmation from Mr President that the new capital is named Nusantara,’’ National Development Minister, Suharso Monoarfa, told reporters.

Nusantara, which means archipelago, is an old name for the Malay Archipelago, which included Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and southern parts of the Philippines.

President Joko Widodo announced in 2019 plans to build a whole new capital in the jungles of Borneo, somewhere halfway between the cities of Balikpapan and Samarinda.

He said that Jakarta was no longer viable as the country’s administrative hub because of frequent flooding, perennial traffic jams and poor air quality.

The cost of the move was estimated at more than $32 billion.

If things go according to plan, the first officials were scheduled to move into their new offices as early as 2024 the last year of Joko’s second and final term in office.

Twenty per cent of Jakarta was below sea level, and that figure was set to nearly double by 2050, according to researchers at the Bandung Institute of Technology.

Mass extraction of groundwater was partly to blame for the city’s gradual sinking.

NASENI, Indonesia revive collaboration on technology transfer to Nigeria

Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to seek international collaboration in the area of technology transfer for the development of Nigeria economy, the Agency and the Indonesian Government have agreed to work together.

NASENI is under direct supervision of President Buhari, who is the Chairman of its Governing Board.

Today, at the NASENI Headquarters Abuja, the Indonesia Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Usra Hendra Harahap paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Vice Chairman/CE of NASENI, Engr. Prof. Mohammed Sani Haruna where discussions were held on issues of transfer of technology to Nigeria by Indonesia, exchange of engineering principles, amongst others to create jobs, address poverty in Nigeria and also empower Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for Nigeria to manufacture products that can compete both at local and foreign markets.

Also agreement for more collaborations were reached on exchange of ideas and innovation, technology transfer in various areas of interest for Nigeria such as Aircraft design, spare parts production, maintenance, repairs, mechanized agriculture, military vehicles, weaponry and ammunition, military vessels.

In his welcome remarks, the Executive Vice Chairman of NASENI disclosed that the relationship between NASENI and Indonesia dated back to the establishment of the Agency since 1992 as Nigeria adopted similar activities of PT.PINDAD of Indonesia, adding that NASENI also had benefited a lot from Indonesia technology know-hows. According to him, NASENI’s Small Hydro Power (SHP) Turbine was reverse engineered from the one procured from Indonesia after the initial training of NASENI engineers by Indonesia on manufacturing of Cross-Flow Turbine, which is currently in use at some of Nigeria dams for generation of power especially at the rural areas.

He noted that Mr. President has mandated NASENI to seek collaboration in technology transfer on manufacturing and domestication of armoured personnel carriers from Indonesia and other equipment needed for manufacturing of fertilizer, aircraft, mechanized agriculture and irrigation system, adding that with the collaboration, Indonesia would help Nigeria acquire many more technologies for the development of Nigeria economy especially in the agricultural sector.

Speaking on the purpose of the visit, the Indonesian Ambassador noted that after the EVC last visit to Indonesia Embassy in Nigeria, the Embassy received an update of proposal from PT. PINDAD Indonesia to establish a Memorandum of Understanding between PT. PINDAD and NASENI in Rural Multipurpose Mechanical Tools Projects (AMDESS) to help Nigerian farmers.

He further explained that with transfer of technology agreement between Nigeria and Indonesia through NASENI especially in agriculture, Nigeria farmers would improve mechanized agriculture with AMDESS to enable them overcome inequality and develop the potential that exists in the country side to create economic resilience.

He said “in Indonesia, this particular vehicle is popular to help farmers in growing their plantation and support harvest management. The vehicle can easily be converted because it is equipped with devices that can transmit power from the car to other machines.”

Other areas, according to Dr. Harahap that the two countries could work together include coal fertilizer project which aimed at helping local farmers to increase productivity of various types of plants using coal-based fertilizer production technique; supply of finished products and semi-finished products from SOE’s to NASENI and joint development of product, transfer of technology etc.

He said with the level of bilateral relationship existing between Nigeria and Indonesia, he was optimistic that the partnership between NASENI and Indonesia would be stronger and wider.

Omicron: Indonesia bans arrivals from Nigeria, seven other African countries

The government of Indonesia says it will ban the entry of travellers who have been in eight African countries, including Nigeria, and extend quarantine times for all arrivals to curb the spread of the Omicron variant, officials have said.

The ban extends to people who have been in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Mozambique, Eswatini or Nigeria in the past 14 days.

Delegates attending G20 meetings, which Indonesia chairs, will not be affected.

First discovered in South Africa, Omicron has since been recorded in the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Botswana, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy and the United Kingdom.

The discovery of Omicron, dubbed a “variant of concern” on Friday by the World Health Organization, sparked worries that it could resist vaccines and prolong the nearly two-year COVID pandemic.

Omicron is potentially more contagious than previous variants, but experts do not know yet if it will cause more or less severe COVID-19.

Countries have imposed a wave of travel bans or curbs on southern Africa. In the most far-reaching effort to keep the variant at bay, Israel announced late on Saturday it would ban the entry of all foreigners and reintroduce counterterrorism phone-tracking technology to contain the spread of the variant.

  • Retired Ambassadors condemn assault of Nigerian Diplomat in Indonesia

Retired Ambassadors condemn assault of Nigerian Diplomat in Indonesia

Retired Ambassadors in Nigeria under the aegis of Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria (ARCAN) , on Wednesday condemned in the strongest term, the unprovoked attack by Indonesian Immigration Officials on a Nigerian diplomatic agent.

ARCAN protested that the attack was not only unprovoked and unwarranted, but it was also a glaring abuse of established conventions and international norms and conduct as enshrined in the Vienna Convention (1961), on Diplomatic Relations.

ARCAN in a statement on Wednesday noted with appreciation and support, the interim steps so far taken by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry by summoning the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria to protest the actions of the unruly Indonesian Immigration Officials and recalling, for consultation, the Ambassador of Nigeria to Indonesia.

The association acknowledged that the Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, nevertheless, recommended further actions to be taken following the conclusion of the investigation the Government intends to carry out.

“The actions of the Indonesian Officials represent a modern-day display of gangsterism and inhuman behaviour towards a fellow human being, even if he was not a diplomatic agent, and must, therefore, be met with robust response from the
Federal Government of Nigeria through the application of measures that may include a complete reassessment of Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with Indonesia,” the association declared.

ARCAN rejected the statement credited to the Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of Indonesia which, it said, makes no sense and an obvious attempt to cover up the barbaric action of the Immigration officials, and a clear indication of the unacceptable manner foreigners, legal or illegal, are treated
    in the country.

ARCAN expressed that it stands in solidarity with the Nigerian Government and in this regard looks forward to adequate compensatory measures to be dispensed to the traumatized Consular Officer, including appropriate and adequate medical treatment, as well as other measures, to help in his rehabilitation.

ARCAN anticipated that at the end of all this, other rogue officials in Indonesia and elsewhere in the world, would have learnt the necessary lessons and ensure that this type of clear breach and barbaric behaviour never rears its head again.

  • FG must reciprocate assault on Nigerian diplomat in Indonesia – Fani-Kayode

FG must reciprocate assault on Nigerian diplomat in Indonesia – Fani-Kayode

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has called on the Federal Government to reciprocate the brutalisation of a staff of the Nigerian High Commission in Indonesia.

A viral video showed Indonesian immigration officials manhandling a Nigerian diplomat.

Responding to this, Fani-Kayode condemned the act, saying the Nigerian government must reciprocate.

“A staff of the Nigerian High Commission in Indonesia is brutalised by the Indonesian authorities. This is unacceptable and I wholeheartedly condemn it.

“Have we no national pride, self-respect and dignity anymore? Even the Indonesians have taken us for granted. Try this with a western diplomat and all hell will break loose.

“I call for a strong and robust reciprocal response from the FG to this outrageous, despicable and disgraceful conduct.

“The Indonesian Ambassador in Nigeria ought to be summoned by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and warned. Our country may not be perfect but it is still our country.

“No Nigerian deserves to be brutalised in this manner by foreigners anywhere in the world. I weep for my country.”

Reacting to the ugly development, Geoffrey Onyema, Minister of Foreign Affairs, summoned the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Usra Hendra Harahap.

In a statement, Nigeria’s foreign affairs ministry said the Indonesia envoy confirmed that the incident happened in his country and he tendered an apology

  • JUST IN: Nigeria recalls ambassador from Indonesia over assault on diplomat

JUST IN: Nigeria recalls ambassador from Indonesia over assault on diplomat

The Federal Government of Nigeria says it has recalled its Ambassador in Indonesia as it reviews its bilateral relations with the country.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the spokesperson, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esther Sunsuwa, following a viral video which showed Indonesian immigration officials allegedly assaulting a Nigerian diplomat inside a car.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received a comprehensive report from the Nigerian Ambassador in Indonesia on the manhandling and arrest of a Nigerian diplomat.

“The Nigerian Government demands appropriate sanctions against the relevant officials and has recalled its Ambassador in Indonesia for consultations, including a review of bilateral relations, “ the statement partly reads.

Although, the ministry earlier noted that its Indonesian counterpart had apologised over the incident, it stated that the incident violated international law.

Amid the reactions on social media, the ministry assured that the federal government will keep protecting the rights of Nigerians in diaspora.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously summoned the Indonesian Ambassador to the Ministry to express outrage and to protest strongly.

“After studying the report of the Nigerian Ambassador, the Nigerian Government condemns in the strongest terms what is in effect an egregious act of international delinquency by Indonesian State actors against an accredited representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with absolutely no justification and against international law.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms its resolve to protect the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians wherever they are in the world and calls for calm as consultations continue,” it stated.
