    BREAKING: APC, NNPP share ‘spoils’ of Kano by-elections

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) have shared the spoils of the by-elections conducted in Kano State on Saturday.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted the by-elections for the Ghari/Tsanyawa and Shanono/Bagwai constituencies.

    While Garba Ya’u Gwarmai of the APC won the Ghari/Tsanyawa constituency, NEC announced Ali Lawal Alhassan of the NNPP won Shanono/Bagwai constituency.

    The results of the by-elections showed that NNPP received a total of 16,198 votes and APC received 5,347 votes in Shanono/Bagwai. However, in Ghari/Tsanyawa, APC received a total of 31,472 votes, while NNPP got 27,931 votes.

    The Police command in Ogun has confirmed the arrest of two persons identified as  officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and others for alleged electoral offences.

    This is contained in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Saturday by the Command’s Spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola.

    He said that  the officials were arrested in Iperu Remo,  during the Remo Federal constituency by-election.

    She noted that at 12:45 a.m, a police patrol team, attached to Iperu Remo Division, intercepted a Mitsubishi Space wagon, with registration number AKD 887 HT, with three occupants.

    She added that the INEC officials were arrested alongside their driver. Odutola stated that a search on the vehicle led to the recovery of N2.5 million cash from one of the officials.

    “During interrogation, he confessed that the money was collected at Kehoy Hotel, Iperu, from a man he referred to as “Political Solution”, acting on the directive of his supervisor,” she said.

    The police spokesperson stated that the  Commissioner of Police,  Lanre Ogunlowo, had ordered that the suspects be transferred to the State CID, Eleweran, for immediate discreet investigation.

    He assured members of the public that monitoring of the election was ongoing, and the command would keep the public abreast of the outcome of the investigation.

    The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo State, Dr Adeniran Tella, has said no violence or BVAS machine malfunctioning was recorded  in the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election.

    Tella disclosed this while briefing newsmen after monitoring the conduct of the election in various polling units and wards on Saturday in Ibadan.

    The REC, who described the turnout of voters as not bad, added that the election was conducted in a process that guaranteed acceptability.

    “No report of violence or malfunction of BVAS machine have been recorded so far,” he said.

    Tella commended the security agencies in the state for their efforts in ensuring a free, fair and credible election.

    He further commended the electorate for their orderliness and ensuring a peaceful conduct of the election.

    Some of areas visited by the REC include Sabo Ward 6, Units 9, 10, 24 at St. Gabriel Secondary Commercial School, Jembewon Way and Ward 6, Units 005 and 20, also in same area. Others were Yemetu Oja Ward 3, Units 36, 014, 44 and 12 among others.

    It was observed low turn out of voters in most of the polling units and wards visited. The agents of All Progressive Congress (APC), Wasiu Abiola and that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nafiu Lawal, told NAN that the election was peaceful and the BVAS machines worked perfectly.

    The voters however, complained of low turn out of voters.

    The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has rejected the outcome of the Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa state constituencies re-run elections, citing widespread irregularities and violence.

    The party claims the electoral process was marred by thuggery, with political thugs intimidating eligible voters, rendering the exercise ridiculous.

    The Chairman of the party  Alhaji Yusuf Kibiya, who stated  this while addressing newsmen on Saturday in Kano,  described the process as “totally devoid of all democratic processes”.

    He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide a level playing ground for all parties, emphasising that the current state of affairs undermines the integrity of the electoral process.

    Kibiya explained that the entire process was “totally devoid of all democratic processes”. He called on security agencies to protect voters, uphold peaceful assembly, and deter intimidation and violence.

    The chiarman advised the Kano State Government and national leaders to avoid inflammatory rhetorics and actions, and urged them promote transparent and peaceful electoral process.

    He also called on relevant  authorities to  investigate electoral law breaches and sanction offenders accordingly to prevent future misconduct.

    The Nigeria Police on Saturday announced the arrest of 288 suspected thugs during the re-run election for Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency and Bagwai/Shanono State Constituency.

    The  Commissioner of Police in Kano, Ibrahim Bakori, disclosed this to newsmen in the Shanono Local Government Area of the state.

    Ogun by-election: PDP candidate alleges harassment by APC

    Meanwhile, Mr Bolarinwa Oluwole, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the  Ogun by-election for Remo Federal Constituency on Saturday, said that thugs, allegedly hired by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) beat and chased voters away at polling units in the constituency.

    He claimed that he was initially chased away by the thugs stationed at his polling unit. The PDP candidate spoke with newsmen shortly after he cast his vote at Polling Unit 009, Ijagba Ward 7, Sagamu, Sagamu Local Government Area of the state.

    He said  the thugs, allegedly hired by the APC, targeted  strongholds of the PDP to cause violence, declaring that there was no by-election in Ogun. He termed the process as electoral fraud and violence perpetuated by the ruling party.

    He flayed the APC for allegedly unleashing political thugs against members of the opposition and causing violence, in order to rig the election.

    “Before I came here, there was no election. They were beating people here that voted for the PDP. APC thugs chased me away, they had to bring me to one corner. It’s a pity to the governor and all his thugs because of a small boy like me, they have been running up and down beating our people.

    “They have really bastardised this exercise. This is not an election. If  INEC does not say the truth, I leave everything in God’s hands,” Oluwole said.

    In a swift response, the  APC candidate, Mrs Adesola Elegbeji, cast her vote at Ibido polling unit, ward 15 Ijagba, Sagamu.

    Speaking after casting her vote, Elegbeji noted that the election was peaceful while also appreciating security agencies, INEC and the voter’s for their roles in the process. She expressed optimism that she would emerge victorious.

    “Am confident , we massively won  this election in 2023 by decisive mandate before our representative was taken away from us, she did a tremendous job.

    “Our campaign message has been continuity . The people of Remo  know that we are the only party that can continue the good works that our former representative did.

    “Am confident that we will win convincingly . Everything is calm, there is no trouble , we are a peaceful community and we intend to maintain that. There has been no incidences of misconduct ,” she said.

    The former member representing the constituency, Adewunmi Onanuga died on Jan. 15,  after a brief illness.

    Alleged electoral malpractices: Security agencies will do the needful – INEC

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ogun has expressed confidence that the security agencies would deal decisively with anyone or group caught involved in vote buying and other electoral malpractices.

    Remo Federal Constituency is among the 16 constituencies where by-elections were held in 12 states in the country.

    The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ogun, Saseyi Feyijimi, made the disclosure on Saturday in Sagamu while reacting to alleged vote buying involving officials of INEC and some political faithful in an interview with newsmen.

    “A viral video being circulated displayed where the officials and the faithful were arrested with huge sums of cash allegedly meant for rigging in the by-elections into the Remo Federal Constituency.”

    She stated that the commission was sure that the security agencies were on top of the matter.

    “INEC is sure that the security agencies will do the needful; as soon as I lay my hands on the official report, I will also inform the National Headquarters,”

    The REC further commended voters at the constituency for coming out early and displayed orderliness.

    She said, “I reiterate my assurance of INEC’s commitment to be impartial and transparent.”

    The by -election into the Remo Federal Constituency is to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Adewunmi Onanuga, former Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, who passed away in Jan. 15 after a brief illness.

    APGA candidate reacts over conduct of Onitsha North Constituency 1 by-election

    Mrs Ifeoma Azikiwe, the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for Anambra House of Assembly, Onitsha North Constituency 1, has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a smooth conduct of the by-election.

    Azikiwe made the commendation at her Ward 4, polling unit 003 on Saturday in Onitsha. According to her, the process has been fair, except for some isolated calls she got from her agents about issues in certain locations which she is yet to confirm as at the time of this report.

    The APGA candidate also alleged that some electorate were disenfranchised because their voters cards were not accepted by INEC officials as a result of recent registration.

    She explained that they were not disenfranchised as those were prospective voters for the November gubernatorial election in the state.

    The APGA candidate clarified that such persons needed to give INEC time to integrate them into the data base. She stated that people who transferred their cards and those that registered newly were going to be valid in November.

    According to her, INEC has been doing very well in the ongoing by-election, saying, “I have not seen anybody, who complained, though I can’t tell for everywhere, it’s 166 polling units.

    “There is no way I will get information about all the polling units, but the places I have seen so far, materials arrived very early.

    “Accreditations took place along with it and I have solid hope that this exercise has been going on smoothly. There is also no issue of violence anywhere and I am hopeful of victory at the end of the exercise”, she said.

    The African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 10 votes, while the Labour Party (LP) recorded 9 votes at the unit.

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken the lead in the ongoing by-election for Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, with results trickling in from polling units.

    At the Narayi/Shagari Road Polling Unit, located in Narayi Ward of Chikun Local Government Area, the APC polled 61 votes, securing a comfortable lead over its closest rival, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which garnered 26 votes.

    The African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 10 votes, while the Labour Party (LP) recorded 9 votes at the unit.

    The bye-elections, caused by the resignation or death of serving lawmakers, is taking place in two senatorial districts in Anambra and Edo States; five federal constituencies in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo States; and nine state constituencies spread across Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna (2), Kano, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, and Zamfara States.

    Recall that security operatives arrested a suspected vote buyer with cash totalling N25,963,000 in Kaduna metropolis, barely hours before the conduct of the bye-elections in parts of the state.

    The suspect, identified as Shehu Aliyu Patangi, was apprehended around 3:30am on Saturday by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with the Department of State Services, DSS, at a popular hotel along Turunku Road.

    The Kaduna State Police Command said a preliminary investigation revealed that the huge cash was meant for inducing voters to compromise the electoral process.

    The spokesman of the Command, DSP Mansir Hassan, said the suspect had already confessed to the crime during interrogation and pleaded for leniency

    The Anambra South Senatorial bye-election to replace late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah has been marred by violence with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) arrested.

    Four polling agents of the APC candidate, Sir Azuka Okwuosa, have been taken away by the local government chairman of Ekwusigo local government area with the support of a community leader in Ozubulu

    The development forced youths in the area to stage protest, alleging harassment and intimidation by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)-led government

    Immediate past Anambra Speaker Hon Rita Maduagwu told The Nation that APGA invaded her Ukpor Ward 3,009 to unleash mayhem on the voters

    The situation has heightened tension in Nnewi and Ekwusigo local government areas

    Security operatives had stepped in to quell the situation as of the time of filing in the report.

    But National Publicity Secretary of APGA, Ejiomofor Opara, denied the allegations, adding that no APGA official or government person could do that.

    He alleged that APC members were just claiming violence and arrests.

    In compliance with a Federal High Court, Abuja, judgment, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will include the names of candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Saturday’s by-election.

    The commission disclosed this in a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun on Friday in Abuja.

    Olumekun said that the commission had been served with the judgement of the court in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1525/2025 filed by the party challenging its omission in the by-election.

    “In the judgement, the commission was ordered to include the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its candidates in the by-elections in 12 states of the federation.

    “The party did not earlier submit a valid notice for the conduct of primaries for the by-elections. For this reason, they were not monitored by the commission.

    “However, in compliance with the judgment, the names of the candidates submitted manually have been accepted and published on our website. The party will participate in the by-elections.

    “The commission wishes to assure the public, especially voters in the 12 states, that the 11th-hour judgment will not affect the election which will proceed tomorrow, Saturday Aug. 16, as scheduled,” Olumekun said.

    The INEC commissioner, however, said that the commission woul exercise its legitimate right of appeal under the law.

    The by-elections will cover two senatorial districts in Anambra and Edo States, five federal constituencies in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo States, as well as nine state constituencies in Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna (2), Kano, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, and Zamfara States.

    Additionally, INEC confirmed that court-ordered re-run elections in Enugu South I State Constituency of Enugu State and Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency of Kano State will be conducted concurrently.

    The Police command in Ogun says it has deployed adequate number of operatives to ensure tight security for Saturday’s by-election in the Remo Federal constituency.

    CSP Omolola Odutola , the Command’s Spokesperson, stated this in a statement issued on Friday in Abeokuta.

    The Remo Federal constituency comprises Sagamu, Ikenne and Remo North Local Government areas of the state.

    “For a credible and transparent election, voters are to align with the electoral laws and must not engage in vote buying or any conduct that can cause breach of peace. Applicable law will be applied to anyone found disobeying it.

    “Movements across the three local governments would be restricted from 12:00a.m  to 4:00p.m, while police stop and search teams and other operational units will be strategically deployed,” she said.

    The police spokesperson added that the State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, while briefing officers ahead of the poll, emphasised that operatives must remain professional, civil, and neutral.

    “The command, in collaboration with other security agencies, and additional manpower from Zone 2 Command, Lagos, has put in place robust security measures to prevent election-related violence.

    “To ensure  credible, transparent, and violence-free election, voters are enjoined to adhere to the electoral laws.

    “Acts such as campaign, vote-buying, distribution of flyers or display of political stickers at polling areas are prohibited,” she said.

    Odutola appealed for the cooperation of all voters and warned individuals with malicious intentions to stay away from polling units, as any attempt to disrupt the process would be met with decisive action.

    By-election: INEC distributes sensitive materials in Ogun

    Ahead of the Saturday by-election for the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal constituency in Ogun, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of sensitive materials.

    Mrs Saseyi Feyijimi, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) made this known to newsmen at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Abeokuta on Friday, venue of the distribution.

    According to Feyijimi, the sensitive materials includes result sheets and the ballot papers, adding that the non-sensitive materials had been distributed to the local government earlier.

    She noted that critical stakeholders like members of the committee on inter agency consultative committee on election, security and media were on ground to witness the distribution of the materials.

    “The usual practice is to distribute the materials in the open so that everybody can see. As you can see, the materials have not been opened. Pictures have been taken so that everybody can see that we are doing it in a transparent manner.

    “Critical stakeholders are here; the press, members of the committee on inter agency consultative committee on election security are also here .We also have the national commissioner supervising Ogun state and political parties are all here,” she said.

    Feyijimi assured that INEC would maintain fairness, justice, and transparency in the election process, noting that commission officers had conducted extensive grassroots sensitization in preparation.

    She stated that the commission had trained 2,445 officials for the election and assured that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) was in place, with a backup system to ensure smooth operations.

    On security, she said the commission had been assured of adequate security by the state commissioner of police and traditional rulers from the three local government areas.

    “INEC is committed to transparency and will not tolerate or defend anyone who engages in electoral infractions.

    “We have warned our staff to do what is right. Anyone caught will not be spared; even the chairman of the commission has warned all the staff,” she said.

    According to the REC, the polling hours would be from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The former member representing the constituency Adewunmi Onanuga died on Jan. 15 after a brief illness.

    Police impose movement restriction ahead of Kaduna by-elections

    The Police Command in Kaduna State, has announced the restriction of movement in the affected local governments areas to ensure the peaceful conduct of Saturday’s bye-elections.

    The command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, made the announcement in a statement issued on Friday in Kaduna.

    Hassan said the restriction of movement would start from 12:00 a.m in Sabon Gari, Zaria, Chikun, and Kajuru Local Government Areas in the state.

    He said the measure was part of the security arrangements put in place to ensure successful bye-elections in the affected areas.

    “Members of the public are strongly advised to comply with this directive as only personnel on essential duties and those with valid election duties will be exempted.

    “The command urges the residents to conduct themselves peacefully and cooperate with the security agencies to ensure  hitch-free elections,” Hassan said.

    All set for Anambra by-election – INEC

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said that all is now set for the conduct of the Saturday by-elections in Anambra South Senatorial zone and Onitsha North 1 state Assembly constituency.

    The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Queen Elizabeth Agwu disclosed this said to journalists in Awka on Friday.

    She said that the election would hold in 210 wards in Anambra South Senatorial zone while the exercise would hold in 118 wards in Onitsha North 1 state Assembly constituency.

    She also said that while 817, 521 registered voters were expected to determine a winner for Anambra South Senatorial zone seat, 92, 223 voters were eligible to participate in the election in Onitsha North 1 state Assembly constituency.

    Agwu said that the two constituency by-elections were demanded by the demise of the occupants of the seats, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah who died on July 26,2024  in London and, Justice Azuka who was kidnapped on Dec. 24, 2024.

    The REC said that the commission had made adequate arrangements to ensure that the elections were free, fair and credible.

    She disclosed that the commission had held a meeting with all the major stakeholders including security agencies and that every participant in the elections agreed to collaborate to ensure that the election was hitch free.

    Agwu urged the electorate to come out en masse to vote in the elections and advised those who might not have any business to do in the polls to stay away from the constituencies during the election.

    She said that the commission had no preferred political parties or candidates  in the upcoming elections and advised all eligible voters to come out timely to cast their votes to their preferred candidate.

    Agwu said that sensitive and non-sensitive materials for the election had been distributed accordingly to the various constituencies where the election would hold before relevant persons from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office.

    She said that the exercise was done in most civilised and professional manner before the security agencies, some political party representatives and journalists who witnessed the distribution of the materials.

    The Ogun Resident Electoral Commissioner(REC), Saseyi Feyijimi, in an interview with NAN in Abeokuta, on Friday, stated that the commission had improved the capacity of its officers to handle the by – elections professionally, and without any compromise.

    ” I urge the voters in Remo Federal Constituency to come out on Saturday, Aug.16 and vote the candidates of their conscience.

    “The distribution of sensitive and non sensitive materials would commence  any time from now,” she said.

    The REC further assured that the materials would be transported to the polling units (PUs) in good time to facilitate smooth conduct of the election, stressing that the process would be transparent.

    “All election technology, such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), has been configured for the exercise,

    She also commended the political parties and candidates for complying with the electoral campaign guidelines.

    “Doing this will ensure  safety and seamless election  processes,” she said.
