  • Lagos hits all-time high daily Covid-19 infections with 183 new cases

Lagos State has recorded an all-time high daily Covid-19 cases, as it ramped up 183 new infections on Thursday.

This has taken Lagos’ total figures to 1,491.

Kano had previously broken the record of 87 highest daily infections held by Lagos by raking in 92 infections.

But Lagos State shattered Kano’s record, with 183 new cases on Thursday.

This ostensibly made a mockery of the huge number of Coronavirus patients discharged by Lagos in the last few days.

Lagos had discharged 48 survivors of the pandemic on Thursday, but its biggest new infection rate calls for concern.

This may not be unconnected with the gradual easing of the lockdown in the State on Monday.

Millions of Lagosians had rushed out in large numbers, throwing social distancing into the dustbin.

Another sad news for Lagos State is that it recorded two Coronavirus deaths today.

Total number of patients discharged so far in Lagos is 406, while active cases now stand at 1,052.

  • First Coronavirus death outside China, infections soar to 14,000

First Coronavirus death outside China, infections soar to 14,000

The first overseas death from the growing epidemic of a coronavirus that originated in China, has been confirmed as infections in China jumped by a daily record to top 14,000 cases and deaths soared beyond 300.

The overseas death was recorded in the Philippines on Sunday.

The Philippines Department of Health said a 44-year-old man from Wuhan city in central Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak, had died after developing severe pneumonia. It was the first death out of more than 130 cases reported in around two dozen other countries and regions outside of mainland China.

The man who died was a companion of a 38-year-old Chinese woman, also from Wuhan, who was the first and only other person to test positive for the virus in the Philippines. Both patients arrived in the Philippines via Hong Kong on Jan. 21.

The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in China had reached 304 as of the end of Saturday, state broadcaster CCTV said on Sunday, citing the country’s National Health Commission.

  • Queen Elizabeth’s husband, Prince Philip, hospitalised for undisclosed infections

The 96-year-old husband of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, has been admitted to hospital with an infection and will miss the formal opening of parliament, Buckingham Palace has said.

Philip, whose official title is Duke of Edinburgh, has been by the queen’s side throughout her 65 years on the throne and she has described him as “my strength and stay.”

“The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last night as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition,” a spokesman for the Palace said.

“Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot,” the spokesman said.

The queen, the world’s longest-reigning living monarch, celebrated her 91st birthday in April. She will be accompanied in parliament by her son, Prince Charles, who is heir to the throne.

When Philip announced in May that he would retire later this year from active public life, he quipped about not being able to “stand up much.”

Queen Elizabeth and Philip, who married at Westminster Abbey in 1947, are due to celebrate their platinum, or 70th, wedding anniversary in November.

Both the queen and Philip have suffered some health issues in recent years.

The queen missed a traditional Christmas church service last year for the first time in decades because of a heavy cold; and was hospitalised in March 2013 with symptoms of gastroenteritis.

Philip underwent “an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations” in 2013.
