Manchester United have announced Lisandro Martinez will be sidelined for an “extended period” after aggravating the foot injury he suffered towards the end of last season.

The Argentina defender sustained a fractured metatarsal in April’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Sevilla, keeping him out for around two months.

“The Argentinian defender experienced the setback in our Premier League game against Arsenal earlier this month.

“Martinez bravely continued playing for the following two games against Brighton and Bayern Munich.

“But it has now been determined that he needs a period on the sidelines for recovery and rehabilitation. Assessment is ongoing to decide next steps.”

United have a number of injury issues to deal with and have confirmed Sergio Reguilon will be among those absent against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The club said: “Sergio Reguilon will also be absent from this Saturday’s Premier League game against Crystal Palace with a minor injury.”

Ten Hag confirms Hojlund preseason injury

Summer signing Rasmus Hojlund will miss Manchester United’s opening game of the Premier League season.

Manager Erik ten Hag has outlined that Hojlund has a slight injury that requires him to rest for a few weeks.

The Denmark forward is not thought to have any serious or long-term issues with the ailment.

“It’s difficult to say how that process will go, but I think he’s making good progress at this moment. We have to see day by day how the progress will go, then we have to follow up,” Ten Hag told  .

“Of course when he’s available and he’s here so you have the option to play, but we don’t expect him in that short notice to be 100 per cent fit. So we have to wait sometime more. We need all positions doubled because of the number of games.

“We need the competition, you always have to deal with suspensions and injuries, with the form of players. Also from a technical perspective, we need double positioning and yes you need good players, but also every player needs perspective to play.

“I’m happy with the squad and I want a strong squad and competition in the squad so I’m happy with the current players who are in, so if we go with the squad into the season, that’s fine.”

The Barca gaffer said: “Frenkie de Jong and Robert Lewandowski played more minutes.

“I think they have been playing a lot of minutes, that’s why I made the changes. The other day Pedri was injured, and we can’t afford more injuries.

Eriksen will undergo a scan to determine the extent of his injury after being seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches following Saturday’s FA Cup victory over Reading.

The Danish midfielder is waiting to find out how long he faces on the sidelines with concerning footage shared by a fan on Twitter showing him hobbling out of Manchester United’s home ground.

Eriksen can be seen wearing a grey protective boot and using the aid of two crutches as he exits the stadium after being caught by Reading striker Andy Carroll.

United manager Ten Hag confirmed he didn’t know how long Eriksen’s injury break could be, admitting in Saturday’s post-match press conference that a diagnosis couldn’t be made until Sunday.

The Dutchman explained: “It’s always difficult to say in this moment so short after the game has finished.

“But it’s an ankle [injury]. We have to see what is the diagnosis, so it costs us a minimum of 24 hours before we know that and then I can say more.”
