EPL: Man City Laporte out for up to six months

Manchester City centre-back Aymeric Laporte has been ruled out for five to six months after undergoing knee surgery.

The 25-year-old was stretchered off in City’s win against Brighton before the international break and Pep Guardiola confirmed the extent of his injury.

When asked how long Laporte will be out for, Guardiola said: “Five months, six months. Next year sure, January or February.”

Man City defender Laporte undergoes knee surgery

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte has had knee surgery after damaging his cartilage and lateral meniscus in their 4-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend, the Premier League champions said on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old, who had been called up by France for their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Albania and Andorra, was carried off on a stretcher after upending Brighton’s Adam Webster and coming off worse.

“Aymeric Laporte has undergone surgery on his knee after damaging his cartilage and lateral meniscus during Saturday’s win over Brighton,” City said in a statement.

“The surgery, carried out by Dr Ramon Cugat in Barcelona, was successful and a more detailed prognosis will be provided in due course. Everyone at City wishes Aymeric a full and speedy recovery.”

Laporte established himself as a key player in manager Pep Guardiola’s back line last season, playing 35 league matches and started all four of their matches in the current campaign.

The Frenchman’s injury means that City only have Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones, who is battling a thigh issue as their senior central defenders, following the departure of Vincent Kompany in the closed season.

City return to league action against promoted Norwich City on Sept. 14.

  • Hamstring injury ends 2019 AFCON run for Ghana’s Atsu

Christian Atsu has been ruled out of the rest of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a hamstring tear, Ghanaian team officials said on Tuesday in Suez.
He has returned to England for treatment at his club, Newcastle United, hours before the Black stars were due to complete their Group F campaign against Guinea Bissau in Suez.
Atsu went off just 15 minutes into Ghana’s goalless draw against Cameroon in Ismailia on Saturday and doctors have said he is unable to play the rest of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Guinea’s Naby Keita has gone back to Liverpool for treatment on thigh and shin injuries sustained against Nigeria.
He made his first full comeback after the adductor injury that left him side-lined for two months, including the 2018/2019 UEFA Champions League final match.
However, Keita is expected back in Egypt for the knockout round.

  • Injured Ronaldo expects to return in “one or two weeks’’

Injured Ronaldo expects to return in “one or two weeks’’

Cristiano Ronaldo says he expects to return to action in one or two weeks as he does not think his recent injury is overly serious.

The injury had forced him out of Portugal’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Serbia on Monday which ended 1-1.

Ronaldo went off in the first half with an apparent hamstring injury.

“I’ll know more in 24 or 48 hours,” he told reporters.

“It happens, it’s football. If you go out in the rain you get wet … I’m calm, I’ll be back in one or two weeks.”

A long absence would be a blow to his Italian club Juventus, who signed Ronaldo last year to boost their chances of winning the UEFA Champions League.

Juventus travel to face Ajax Amsterdam in their quarter-final first leg on April 10 with the return six days later.

Both Ronaldo and coach Fernando Santos said the referee had apologised to them for not awarding a penalty kick to Portugal for handball in the second half.

The referee initially gave the penalty kick, but then changed his mind.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is not used in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

“It was very clear, the referee should have given it,” said Ronaldo. “The linesman was 40 metres away. So, it seems a bit strange.”

Santos said: “We saw the incident in the dressing room afterwards and neither we nor he had any doubt —- it was a penalty kick… He apologised.”

  • I cried for two days after sustaining injury – Neymar

Brazil striker Neymar says he cried for two days after breaking a metatarsal bone in his right foot in late January.

The Paris St-Germain star is out until April, having sustained the problem in a French Cup game against Strasbourg.

It is the same injury he suffered in February last year which put his World Cup in doubt, but this new blow “is more complicated”, Neymar said.

“This time I had a tough time getting over it,” the 27-year-old told Brazilian TV channel Globo.

“I spent two days at home crying.

“The first time I hurt myself I said, ‘I’ll have an operation, it has to be fixed as quickly as possible’. I wasn’t sad.”

Last year, Neymar was out for three months after surgery, returning just in time to play in the World Cup where he scored twice in Brazil’s run to the quarter-finals.

This time, PSG’s medical staff has decided on conservative treatment of the fracture rather than another operation.

PSG said that Neymar will be out for around 10 weeks, meaning he will miss their Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester United, which the French side lead 2-0 after last week’s first leg at Old Trafford. The second leg is in Paris on 6 March.

  • Neymar recovers from broken foot injury, ready for World Cup

Brazil international Neymar hopes to be fit for this summer’s World Cup and says he will return to training from a broken foot on 17 May.

The Paris St-Germain forward needed surgery on a broken metatarsal bone after being injured in a league game on 25 February.

Brazil play their World Cup opening fixture against Switzerland on 17 June, a month after his expected return.

“I hope to get there in great shape,” said the 26-year-old.

Neymar became the world’s most expensive footballer when he joined PSG from Barcelona last August, and has scored 25 goals with 16 assists for the French side this season.

“I get my final examination on 17 May and then I’ll be free to play,” he told a news conference in Sao Paulo, where he has been receiving treatment.

“I had an examination last week, it is all perfect, evolving well, so I hope that continues so I can get back as soon as possible.

“I am having treatment every day, and from the moment I start training I am going to work harder than I ever worked because this is a dream that’s coming up. It’s a World Cup. I’ve waited four years for this chance, it’s close.”

Neymar played for Brazil, who have won the World Cup five times, at the 2014 finals in his homeland, but missed their 7-1 semi-final defeat by Germany through injury.

Brazil go to Russia as joint favourites alongside champions Germany. After their opener against Switzerland in Group E, they face Costa Rica on 22 June and then Serbia five days later.

Neymar, who joined PSG for a fee of 222m euros (£200m), said he was apprehensive about kicking a ball again after almost three months out.

“Of course, doubts exist and I feel them too sometimes,” he said. “But that’s normal for a guy who has had the first surgery of his career. It’s very difficult for me not playing and not training.

“I have to work even harder but I am going to have enough time to arrive in form for the World Cup, to prepare. It was horrible getting injured but I am more rested, that’s the upside. We have to see the positive side of things.”

  • Manchester United hit with double injury blow

Jose Mourinho has suffered a double injury set-back with Eric Bailly requiring ankle surgery that will rule the defender out for up to three months and Marouane Fellaini sidelined until next month with a knee injury that has already kept the midfielder out for three weeks.

Bailly has missed United’s past eight matches and Mourinho revealed the decision had now been taken for the Ivory Coast centre-back to undergo an operation on his ankle, although he is confident the defender will play again this season.

“Eric is going for surgery – the decision is made. I don’t say [he’s out] for the season but it it’s for the next two or three months,” said the United manager, who is also without defender Marcos Rojo (head) for Sunday’s trip to West Bromwich Albion.

“But now we have [Phil] Jones back and we have [Chris] Smalling, even [Daley] Blind, so it’s a position we have good cover in but of course we’ll miss the player.”

Fellaini has missed United’s past five matches after aggravating a knee problem originally sustained on international duty with Belgium in early October and the club have decided the midfielder requires a longer period of rehabilitation in order to make a full recovery.

The 30-year-old suffered third degree medial collateral ligament damage that forced his substitution for Belgium against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Oct. 7 but he suffered complications upon his return against Chelsea a month later.

He played through the pain barrier to feature against Newcastle, Basel and Brighton but the situation has only worsened and he will now miss the entire festive programme in a blow to Mourinho.
