Residents of Umella Village in Mbawa ward of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State are still smarting from last Thursday’s attack on their community by Fulani herdsmen which left no fewer than six persons dead.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) gathered that the suspected herders, in their numbers, invaded the community around three o’clock in the afternoon and started opening fire, killing all that they set their eyes on.

Few members of the community were said to be lucky as they ran for dear lives upon being lucky not to be gunned down.

The chairman of Guma Local Government, Mike Uba, confirmed to newsmen on telephone that the herders attacked the community and killed six of its members.

The state governor, Samuel Ortom’s security adviser, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Hemba (retd), also confirmed the attack.

A native of the community who gave his name simply as Tondo said the attackers shot randomly at the people and sent the entire village into panic.

“When they came, gunshots rent the air and caused the people to run helter-skelter. After the attackers left, six people were lying lifelessly on the ground,” Tondo said.

He said the deceased were Aginde Ibember, Orfega Ibember, Alex Msuega, Tsula Iortyer, Verlumun Ortese and another villager whose identity was yet to be ascertained.

Bandits kidnap six wedding guests in Katsina

Bandits have abducted six wedding guests in Dutsinma town, headquarters of Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The victims are said to be relatives of a governorship aspirant, Umar Tata, who contested in the recent primaries of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“A woman, whose children were mostly kidnapped is the sister of the politician (Tata) and the way the attackers went straight to the house and kidnapped the women, was questionable,” a resident said.

The resident, who pleaded anonymity, said the terrorists initially kidnapped nine people at Unguwar Kudu Quarters but three were later released.

“First, they abandoned an elderly woman who could not trek and a kid who was continuously crying.

“There was a time the bandits came to Dutsinma for four consecutive days and kidnapped people.

  • Ohanaeze berates Buhari over S/East Killings

Ohanaeze berates Buhari over S/East Killings

Igbo apex socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has berated the President Muhammad Buhari for his recent reaction to the killings in the South East, saying they are victims.

This is contained in a statement issued on Monday, titled, ‘Insecurity in the South East: Buhari is blaming the victim,” and made available by Ohanaeze President General, Worldwide, Ambassador Professor George Obiozor.

The statement condemned the killings and violence imposed on the South East, saying the situation was caused by President Buhari’s administration, and that he cannot turn around to blame the victim.

The statement which was issued through Ohanaeze National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, said that to appropriate national problems to the South East of Nigeria was an ethnic prejudice taken too far.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide joins the Presidency and indeed the good people of Nigeria in condemning this dastardly act that occurred at Imo State, South East of Nigeria.

“Ohanaeze has repeatedly explained that amongst the Igbo, human life is very sacred. The sanctity of life is so elevated that killing a human being in whatever circumstance is considered an abomination. In fact, it is not in the character of the Igbo to kill in whatever disguise.

“These recent developments are indeed very much alien to the reflexes, culture, and norms of the South East. And we have often called on the Nigerian security operatives to ensure that the perpetrators of such acts are brought to book as a deterrent to others.”

“The apex Igbo body, however, noted that the failure of the Nigerian security agents to fish out the criminals cannot be blamed on the Igbo.

“Ohaneaeze Ndigbo, however, frowns at the statement by the Presidency, which is nuanced against the South East as a haven for terrorists that attack non-indigenes and law enforcement officials, implying that the insecurity persists because the leaders have not forcefully spoken.

“This is very unfair to the Igbo, especially when the presidency knows the root cause and the nature of the insecurity in the South East. It needs to be added that the solution to the insecurity in the South East lies in the enormous powers of the presidency.

While it condemned the security situation in the South East, the highest Igbo body said that the utterances of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are not only very uncharitable but mischievous to poison undiscerning minds by insinuating that non-indigenes and security officials are killed by the terrorists in the South East.

TheNewsaguru reports that the Special Assistant to the President on Media, Mallam Garba Shehu had on Sunday said in a statement that President Muhammadu Buhari condemned in strong terms the recent attacks against non-indigenes and law enforcement officials by terrorists in the South East.

Buhari then called on the community and religious leaders to speak more forcefully against the killings and stand up and defend the ethos of the nation’s cultural and religious heritage.

Referring to the statement, Ohanaeze said the remarks by the presidency appear to have ignored the prolonged open war with the Boko Haram in the North East; the Banditry in the North West, especially in Katsina State; the Fulani Herdsmen invasion of several communities in the Middle Belt region; the Church massacre at Owo; the daily kidnappings on our highways; the Kaduna-Abuja train abduction, etc,.

“Paradoxically, when the district head of Daura, the hometown of Mr President, was kidnapped and was freed after two months, Mallam Garba Shehu was quoted as saying that the “incident was evidence that Duara was not receiving preferential treatment and that insecurity was a national problem.

“In other words, when insecurity manifests in the North West, it is a national problem; but when, on the other hand, it occurs in the South East, it is blamed on the inability of the ‘community and religious leaders to speak more forcefully against the killings and to stand up and defend the ethos of the nation’s cultural and religious heritage’.

“The Igbo possess the greatest wanderlust as well as the most hospitable dispositions amongst the various ethnicities in the world. The non-indigenes in the South East enjoy untrammeled friendliness, inter-ethnic assimilation and a conducive business environment; what happened to the non-indigenes in the South East is most regrettable as part of the current national calamity.

“One would think that the inevitable consequences of the orchestrated mendacious propaganda, dubiety, subterfuge, sabotage, and serial alienation against the South East of Nigeria are already staring us in the face.”

“How do we fight insecurity by appointment of service chiefs based on ethnocentric and religious considerations as against the best global practices of military competence?

“Put differently, how can the South East be excluded among the over 16 service chiefs in the Nigerian armed and paramilitary forces and expect insecurity not to fester? And how; and how; and how…..? And when the chickens have come home to roost, we resort to blaming the victim.

“The famous psychologist, William Ryan, espoused that blaming the victim is an atrocious ideology that tries to justify social injustice against a group. The oppressor deliberately creates an unjust chaotic environment for the oppressed; and blames the victims for the inevitable crises that flow therefrom.

“In conclusion, it is very uncharitable, if not mischievous, to poison undiscerning minds by insinuating that non-indigenes and security officials are killed by the terrorists in the South East.

“On the other hand, to appropriate national problem to the South East of Nigeria is an ethnic prejudice taken too far. Invariably, banditry in the North Central persists because their leaders have not forcefully spoken. Rather, they are publicly celebrated and turbaned or still offered the Sheik Gumi option.

“Both history and current events in the country must have shown that unjust policy against the just shall ultimately vindicate the just.”

  • Crime Watch: Matawalle – Okowa differ on how citizens should defend themselves against criminals

The Governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Bello Matawalle and his Delta State Counterpart, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa have disagreed on how best Nigerian citizens should defend themselves against criminals in the country.

While Zamfara has become a hotbed for kidnappers, bandits, cattle rustlers, terrorists and others, Delta is also rife with the issue of kidnapping, armed robbery, insurrection among others.

Matawalle has advocated the need for citizens to take up arms and defend themselves, but Okowa said his Zamfara counterpart spoke out of understandable frustration.

Okowa faulted an initial proposition by Matawalle that state residents should bear firearms to defend themselves from terrorists.

The Governor spoke to journalists on Thursday evening shortly after he met Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in his office at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

Okowa faulted the idea by Matawalle, saying his idea came out of frustration, and that it would have telling consequences for the overall security of the region.

“I think they need critical thinking because you have to also be in a position to examine the recommendations being made. When recommendations are made and you have not thought through it in full about the consequences of such, then it is also a problem.

“It is out of frustration that such recommendations are being made, not doubt. But when you ask everybody to carry guns, you must ask yourself, are Nigerians in the mindset where every single individual can carry his own gun? You will be surprised that with every little argument people will just snuff themselves out.

“It’s a cause for concern when we hear that kind of recommendation. But the real thing is people are frustrated and he (Governor Matawalle) is also frustrated to the extent that he thinks that is the way to go. I don’t think that is the best recommendation at the moment,” he said.

“I think we need to begin to look into many other things. Yes, as a quick one, he’s calling for that. But there will be consequences. But we need a long-term approach to deal with insecurity. We need to look at the foundation of the problems that we have. A lot of hunger, joblessness, a lot of people are losing hope. And when you look at all these issues, it brings a lot of frustration. So, we have to address it holistically,” he said.

On the July 16th Osun governorship election, the PDP Vice Presidential candidate assured that his Party is prepared to take back the governorship seat.

“A lot is being done. We look forward to the elections. I’m sure the APC would expect a stiff competition. We agree that they are the government in power in that state but they will be definitely expecting a very stiff competition from us. We are poised to take back that state,” Okowa firmly noted.

The poll further revealed that seven in every 10 Nigerians described the current state of security in Nigeria as dreadful.

The result, which was published on May 27, 2022, said the security situation in Nigeria is arguably the worst after the Civil War.

The result read, in part, “The menace of insecurity has continued to rear its ugly head in our country Nigeria, causing loss of lives, destruction of property, instilling the undesirable element of fear and trepidation in the populace.

“The insecurity situation in Nigeria today is arguably the worst since after the Civil War and has continued to rise unabated despite government intervention in terms of spending trillions of naira in fighting insecurity.

“A new public opinion poll conducted by NOIPolls  revealed that 68 per cent of adult Nigerians nationwide described the current state of security in the country as insecure, 29 per cent of adult Nigerians believed the country is somewhat secured while 3 per cent described the country as very secure.”

A former police officer, Mr Yusuf Abdullahi agrees with the findings and told TheNewsGuru.com that the result is the true reality of what Nigerians are facing at the moment.

Mr Abdullahi who is currently the Chief Security Officer of a Private Higher Institution in Lagos said their job as security experts has been made more difficult by the paucity of management of the nation’s security architecture by the Buhari administration.

He said the level of attacks in every part of the country by armed men and women is becoming worrisome that nobody is sure of absolute security anymore.

“Not even the government. The government is not sure of its own security. It is so disheartening. The country must be better managed than what we are currently having.

“No one ever anticipated the country would be so mismanaged with the basics of security management becoming difficult for a president who is a former Army Officer. It is most unfortunate,” he stressed.

On her part, Mrs Gloria Stephen, a security analyst also told TheNewsGuru.com that the country needs to brace up because many individuals and groups are planning to take advantage of the weak system currently in place in Nigeria.

She said: “What do you think would happen with the way places of worship, schools, highways and other places are being attacked with killing and kidnapping going on without any form of resistance either from security agencies or government itself?

“Many Nigerians have become disillusioned about the current situation and that is why you see those who can afford it, leaving the country for other climes where their security would be guaranteed.

“No Nigerian knew it was going to get this bad. Nobody. Not especially the youth of this country who were sold stories of how no – nonsense President Buhari was as a military officer.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that many armed groups have emerged in all parts of the country, with religious, ethnic and even sister agenda.

Maiming, kidnapping, armed insurrection are having field days with citizens using mob action against one another more regularly without any consequences.

  • Buhari complicit in worsening Nigerian insecurity – Ortom

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has pointed accusing fingers on President Muhammadu Buhari over the worsening security situation in Nigeria.

He said the situation is so because of Federal Government’s unwillingness to wield the big stick against dangerous terrorist groups.

The Governor therefore urged the international community to put pressure on the President to address the unabating acts of terrorism by armed herdsmen in the country without religious or ethnic consideration.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nathaniel Ikyur, made the appeal when he interacted with a delegation from the United Kingdom Parliaments All Party Parliamentary Group on Freedom of Religion and Beliefs at the Benue State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

The Governor stated in a statement after the meeting that being a multi-religious and (multi-)ethnic country, the Federal Government, which is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that the rights of the people as enshrined in the constitution are protected, ought to take the task more seriously than it is currently doing.

According to Governor Ortom, the inability of the federal government to act swiftly to tame the rise of terror attacks on communities in the country for many years by Islamic extremists with the sole aim of taking over the country must be put to an end.

Orgom alleged that the current appointment of suspected Boko Haram supporters into key federal offices, integration of repentant members of the sect into the military and failure of government to arrest and prosecute terrorist herdsmen have also proven the complicity of government.

He noted that for the sake of national unity, cohesion, peaceful coexistence and promotion of development, the rights of the people to freedom of religion must also be respected by the Nigerian State, hence the need for the international community to intervene by putting pressure on the government to do the right thing.

TheNewsGuru.com saw parts of the statement to read; “Governor Ortom also told the visiting Parliamentarians that due to the activities of these terrorist groups, over 1.5 million people have been displaced from their ancestral lands and properties worth billions of naira destroyed in Benue State as a result of the invasion.

“He recommended that there was need for rehabilitation and return of IDPs to their ancestral homes as well as payment of full compensation to victims.

“Responding, leader of the delegation and member of Parliament from Ireland, Mr. Jim Shannon, thanked Governor Ortom for availing the delegation with a comprehensive insight into the issues assured that they would present his case at the right department back home to get positive results.

“In their separate comments, Brendan O’Hara of House of Commons and Rachel Miner, who acknowledged that the religious crisis in Nigeria was getting worse, said they would continue to talk to government, religious and civil society leaders to effect the desired change.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Benue State Governor has at loggerheads with the Federal Government for sometime now, with Ortom maintaining that the security instability in the Benue over heedsmen and farmers clashes has the blessing of the President Buhari – led government.

Insecurity in South-East, politically – motivated; Umahi says

Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, has claimed that insecurity in the state and the South-East is politically-motivated.

He stated this while appearing on Channels Television where he said insecurity worsened after he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Umahi ruled out foreigners as the masterminds of insecurity in the geopolitical zone.

The Governor argued that despite the poor security situation in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari has performed excellently.

To him, had Buhari not become President, insecurity situation in the country would have been worse.

He said the Federal Government’s handling of the nation’s security challenges is excellent.

The Governor who is a frontline aspirant into the office of president in 2023 under the All Progressives Congress, said in terms of naming all the indices that are needed to improve on what Buhari has done, he can be scored highly.

In his words; “If it is in infrastructure, security, economy, and uniting Nigerians, I think God has helped him to do very well in each and every one of them.

“Nigerians are very tired of political promises. They want to see evidence of what you have done. I have evidence of what I have done and I believe that what I have done could be replicated at the national level.

“The security situation in the country, I have always told people that if we didn’t have the kind of President we have that is very humane and not vindictive, nobody knows where Nigeria would have been by now.

“So, he has helped us tremendously in the security of the South-East. This thing started as a joke and today it is quite a big issue.”

On the insecurity in the South-East, Umahi said, “In my state, there was a time that the insecurity was highly politically-motivated and the targets were Imo State, APC, and Ebonyi State the moment I defected. We did not have this large scale of insecurity until I defected.”

He continued, “Well, you see, the security situation in the country, as I have always told people, that if we did not have the kind of President that is very humane and not vindictive, nobody knows where Nigeria would have been by now,” the APC presidential aspirant said.

“So, he [Buhari] has helped us tremendously in the security of the South East.

“What I call bandits are people that are engaged in violence and our people, South East people; the youths, some of them are also in this category,” Umahi added.

“When people tend to say the insecurity in the southeast is imported, I don’t buy that because I am a governor and get security reports. We have arrested a number of these people and it should be about five or ten per cent of the people outside the South East.

“So, you cannot say when you have up to 90 per cent of our youths that are engaged in this thing and you say we are being infiltrated by others.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that while the administration came into power in a 2015 campaign filled with insecurity rhetoric and how it would end incessant bombings in many parts of the country, many other security challenges have emerged since 2015 when it took over power.

Analysts believe that thee security situation has worsened with new ones emerging on a regular basis in all parts of Nigeria.

This was contained in a press statement as signed and made available to TheNewsGuru.com by the media aide to the Palace, Mr Dele Ogunsola, where he indicated that Oba Balogun, stated this while hosting the management team of the NYSC in Oyo State, on Friday, at his residence, Alarere Ibadan.

Federal lawmakers call on Buhari to end Nigeria’s insecurity

Members of Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives have again called on President Muhammadu Buhari to end the current security challenges across the country.

This was part of the development at plenary on Wednesday when a member of the House from Sokoto State, Abdullahi Salame, moved a motion of urgent public importance.
Salame prayed the House to urge President Buhari to set up a National Task Force on National Security to address prevalent cases of Kidnapping, banditry and insurgency.
The motion was titled; ‘Need to set up National Task Force to address prevalent insecurity in Nigeria.’
They charged President Buhari to act like the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and protect lives and property.

Salame had noted that the motion was a compilation of previous resolutions of the House as there was “no implementation by the Executive.”
This is just as the Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Wase, said replacing the former service chiefs yielded no results and as such, proactiveness was needed if the situation could be effectively nipped in the bud.
Wase noted that while the sponsor of the motion was indirectly asking for the service chiefs’ sacking, he recalled that the National Assembly had made the call and the president implemented the resolution.
Wase said, “The service chiefs were sacked. Did we get the desired results? Precisely, I will say no. During the appointment of the last Chief of Defence Staff (Gen. Leo Irabor) or Chief of Army Staff (Lt.-Gen. Yusuf Yahaya), I remember (that) about 30 officers were retired – those (whose ranks were) ahead of the person. And these were fine officers. Is that what we are seeking on the floor (of the House) again? I don’t think that is the direction that we should go.”

The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, corroborated Wase by noting that the Constitution does not empower the House to legislate on military operations, especially the proposed creation of a security task force.
Wase also noted that the Armed Forces already had various special operations and task forces across the country’s geopolitical zones, stating that the parliament could only advise the President on security matters.
Though Gbajabiamila faulted Okechukwu’s prayer calling on Buhari to “take every measure to save Nigerians from the present precarious security situation,” saying it is vague, the House eventually granted it via voice.

Amember of the House of Representatives, Nasir Ali (APC, Kano), has called for sack of the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, over lives lost to insecurity across the country.

In his words: “The development calls for sack of the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, he has failed to live up to expectations.”

Ali made his position known during seating of the House of Representatives on Thursday.

However, the House of Representatives adjourned plenary and suspended activities for the day in solidarity with the people that lost their lives recently due to insecurity.

For over one hour, members took turns to cast aspersions on security agencies for killings and attacks by terrorists and other criminal elements.

The members also insisted the executive and legislature should share in the blame of the rising insecurity, adding there is no part of the country that is safe any longer for Nigerians.

Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Idris Wase, who presided over plenary, said all referral to the Committee in charge of national security since the inception of the 9th Assembly has been left unattended to with no single report for the House to consider.
