Patent infringement: BlackBerry files lawsuit against Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram

BlackBerry on Tuesday filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Facebook and its WhatsApp and Instagram apps, arguing that they copied technology and features from BlackBerry Messenger.

“Defendants created mobile messaging applications that co-opt BlackBerry’s innovations, using a number of the innovative security, user interface, and functionality enhancing features,” Canada-based BlackBerry said in a filing with a Los Angeles federal court.

The lawsuit followed years of negotiation and BlackBerry has an obligation to shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies, BlackBerry spokeswoman Sarah McKinney said.

Facebook Deputy General Counsel Paul Grewal said in a statement that the company intended to fight the lawsuit.

“Blackberry’s suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business. Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, Blackberry is now looking to tax the innovation of others,” Grewal said.

BlackBerry is trying to persuade other companies to pay licencing royalties to use its trove of more than 40,000 global patents on technology including operating systems, networking infrastructure, acoustics, messaging, automotive subsystems, cyber-security and wireless communications. BlackBerry is also selling cyber-security software for self-driving cars.

BlackBerry sued Nokia Corp in February 2017, alleging infringement of patents relating to 3G and 4G wireless communications technology. That case is still pending in federal court in Delaware.

Last year Qualcomm Inc agreed to pay BlackBerry $940 million to resolve arbitration over royalty payments.

In October 2017 BlackBerry announced a confidential settlement with Blu Products, a Florida-based maker of low-cost mobile devices it had also sued for patent infringement.

Every guy that slides into your DM is not your spouse- RMD

Veteran Nollywood actor, Richard Mofe Damijo fondly called RMD added another feather to his cap by effortlessly transforming into a relationship coach on Instagram.

The award winning role interpreter who shares words of wisdom with his youthful followers on Instagram noted that everyone who talks to you via your direct message(DM) on Instagram is not your spouse.

RMD said this against the backdrop of individuals who are desperate to get something at all cost.

Hear him: “The thing about wanting something so bad is losing the sensibility and sensitivity to make the right choices. Whatever it is you’re believing God for, it is important to know that not every call is the call you are waiting for-Wait! Every opportunity is not the breakthrough one-Wait! Every step is not the final one-Wait! Every guy/girl that slides into your DM is not your spouse-Wait! Every prayer does not get an instant answer-Wait!

“The eagle does not jump into every wind, it waits till the right wind comes then it dives in, mounts up, spreads its wings and glides, No flapping-No struggling. Be sensitive to the leading of the Spirit of God and only seize the right opportunities so that effortlessly and seamlessly you will soar to your destiny. Wait on God and #elevatewithrmd

  • Quick read: 6 valid tips on how to secure your social media accounts

Social media is now an essential part of business and our daily lives; thus, making it critical that you keep your accounts safe.

You can only imagine the damage that will be done if someone gained unauthorized access to your accounts. It can ruin your reputation depending on the content of your account that is exposed to the public.

These tips should help in keeping your social media accounts safe and secured.

    Activate two-factor authentication

The easiest and most effective way to secure your social media account is two-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication locks out illegitimate users by requiring them to input a verification code sent directly to their mobile phone through SMS text message once they login with the correct username and password combination.

    Verify with links

Another method to secure your social media accounts it to verify and be careful of what links you click on. Many links on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram direct to legitimate news sources, but there have been numerous incidents when this is not the case.

    Use a strong password

This point has been over flogged but some people do not still abide by it. They use weak passwords for their social media accounts and at the same time, they use that password for all their accounts. This is risky as once the weak password is discovered, hackers can have access to all your accounts. You can use a password manager like LastPass to keep track of your passwords.

Use emails that are not public to login

This is an unknown tactic that very few individuals and businesses use. This means logging in to your social network accounts with a non-public email address, or an email that no one knows about.

    Limit third-party applications

Another contributor to social media theft are third-party applications. Limiting third-party applications that have access to your social media accounts will leave them near impossible for hackers to gain unauthorised access.

    Be careful where you login

Many malicious attackers create almost identical login pages dedicated to stealing social media credentials. Be careful where you choose to login, always verify the URL and application before allowing any form of access.

  • Now you can follow hashtags on Instagram

Instagram has introduced a new follow hashtags feature that means users of the platform can now follow hashtags the way they follow profiles.

Instagram on Wednesday launched this feature its users for them to stay connected with their hobbies, passions, and communities, and to make their interests more discoverable.

“Everyday, millions of people share photos and videos and tag them with relevant hashtags. Hashtags represent the many interests and passions of our community. To make these posts even more discoverable, we’re introducing hashtags you can follow,” the company said in a blog.

Following a hashtag is just like following a friend. To get started, search for a topic you are interested in or tap on a hashtag from any post.

You will see relevant hashtags displayed in the search results along with related accounts.

When you find a hashtag you like, open the hashtag page and tap on the follow button. You’ll begin seeing top posts from that hashtag in your feed and some of the latest stories in your stories bar. You can always unfollow a hashtag at any time.

Users can also check the hashtags other people follow, in their profiles.

Similar to people you follow, hashtags you follow respect your privacy settings. If you set your account to private, the hashtags you follow will only be visible to your followers.
