Alleged N6bn fraud: Court reduces Instagram celebrity, Mompha’s bail sum

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Monday reduced from N200 million to N25 million, the bail sum for social media celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha (alias Mompha), charged with six billion Naira money laundering.

Justice Mojisola Dada made the ruling following a prayer by defence counsel, Mr Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), and submission by the prosecution counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo.

Dada had on Jan.18 granted Mompha bail in the sum of N200 million and two sureties.

However, on Monday, she held: “The defendant is admitted to a bail of N25 million with two sureties in like sum.

“One of the sureties must have a landed property worth N50 million within the court’s jurisdiction.

“The defendant shall be temporarily released to defence counsel only for two weeks pending perfection of the bail conditions.

“Defence counsel should also write an undertaking to that effect.”

Earlier, Oyewole tendered an application which was supported by a 13-paragraph affidavit to pray the court to lessen the bail conditions.

“My lord, I have an application dated March 8, 2022, seeking the court’s variation of the bail granted to the defendant.

“The application is supported by a 13-paragraph affidavit which we adopted.

“We seek the prosecution to see toward the possibility of some kind of restitution but this is being tampered with because of detention.

“We urge your lordship to consider the variation as proposed.

The counsel said that the defendant had been on bail on a 22-count-charge before the Federal High Court and did not jump bail.

Responding, Oyedepo had told the court that he was aware of the application and would leave it at the discretion of the court.

“My lord, we are aware of the application. We have opposed it and gave conditions to the defendant.

“WeI leave it to my lord’s discretion,” he said.

The case was initially scheduled for trial.

Mompha and his company, Ismalob Global Investment Ltd., were arraigned on an eight-count charge by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Jan. 12 .

The charges include conspiracy to launder funds obtained through unlawful activity and laundering of funds obtained through unlawful activity.

Other charges include retention of proceeds of criminal conduct, use of property derived from unlawful act, possession of document containing false pretence and failure to disclose assets and property.

The court adjourned the case until April 6 for progress report on perfection of bail conditions.

  • US rapper, Kanye West suspended from Instagram

US rapper, Kanye West suspended from Instagram

Following a continuous bitter row with ex-wife, Grammy award-wining rapper Kanye West has been suspended from social media platform, Instagram.

The rapper was suspended for attacking his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, Pete Davidson and Trevor Noah.

West was accused of violating Instagram’s policies on hate speech and bullying and harassment, will be unable to post, comment or send DMs for 24 hours.

After repeatedly taking aim at ex-wife Kardashian, 41, and her boyfriend, Davidson, 28, in the last few weeks, West most recently lobbed a racial slur at Noah, 38, on Wednesday March 16.

He directed a racial slur at Trevor Noah after the host of “The Daily Show” called him out for “harassing” Kim Kardashian amid their divorce.

Addressing the ongoing drama between West and Kardashian and her new boyfriend Pete Davidson on his Comedy Central show Tuesday night, Noah at one point called West “belligerent.”

Noah compared the situation to his own experience of witnessing abuse. He recalled the time people thought his mother, Patricia, was “overreacting” before being shot in the head by his stepfather. Patricia miraculously survived the attempted murder.

He said: “What [Kardashian is] going through is terrifying to watch, and it shines a spotlight on what so many women go through when they choose to leave.

“What we’re seeing is one of the most powerful, one of the richest women in the world, unable to get her ex to stop texting her, to stop chasing after her, to stop harassing her.

“As a society, we have to ask ourselves questions. Do we wish to stand by and watch a car crash when we thought we saw it coming?”

Throughout the show, Noah reflected on West’s continuous social media tirades, in which he’s been bashing the Skims founder and making claims that she is keeping him from seeing their four children: North, 8, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 2.

Reacting to this, West shared a screenshot from a Google search result, describing Noah as a “South African comedian”. He also captioned the post “All in together now… K–n baya my lord k–n baya K–n baya my lord K–n baya Oooo’ lord K–n baya.”

West, 44, was mocking Noah, 38, by using the offensive “k–n” slur to replace the original lyrics in “Kumbaya.” The post was taken down by Instagram.

The social media giant also said should West continue to violate the policies, the company will take additional steps.

West, who has legally changed his name to Ye, has been targeting Kardashian and her boyfriend, comedian Pete Davidson, and exposing details about their personal affairs to his millions of followers. Earlier this month, he released a new music video that appeared to depict a claymation version of West decapitating Davidson and burying him alive.

UKRAINE INVASION: Facebook, Twitter, others blocked in Russia

Multiple RFE/RL websites, Russian sites of the BBC and Deutsche Welle, alongside Facebook, Twitter, Apple and Google’s app stores have been blocked in Russia to prevent Russian-speakers from getting access to outside information amid the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

According to web monitor group GlobalCheck and other indicators, the websites were blocked overnight on March 3-4.

It was unclear why the social media sites and app stores were targeted, although Moscow has had long-running disputes with many tech providers and platforms over disclosure and user-data issues.

The blocks began overnight on March 3-4 and follow a week of threats to RFE/RL and other media and forced closures amid ongoing coverage since President Vladimir Putin ordered Russia’s full-scale invasion of its post-Soviet neighbor.

Some of the sites sites were still available to Rostelecom subscribers, GlobalCheck said.

The blocks are preventing Russian access to the Russian Service of RFE/RL.

Journalists at the Latvian-based Russian- and English-language news outlet Meduza also said “everything looks like Meduza’s site is blocked in Russia,” adding, “These times will pass. We continue our work.”

The editorial offices of RFE/RL’s Russian Service received six notifications from Roskomnadzor late on March 2 in which the Russian media-monitoring agency threatened to block the service’s website amid ongoing coverage of the conflict in Ukraine.

The service reported that Roskomnadzor said it would use its powers to block news on Svoboda.org about the shelling of Kharkiv, in Ukraine, as well as the hacking of some Russian websites by cyberactors sympathetic to Ukraine and material about social media reactions to the hostilities.

The media regulator said the materials “delivered deliberately false socially significant information about Russia’s alleged attack on the territory of Ukraine” in ways that could “create panic among people.”

The U.S. State Department this week accused Moscow of mounting “a full assault on media freedom and the truth” as officials there seek to “mislead and suppress” information about the war.
