Facebook cracks down on sale of fake accounts, likes, followers

Facebook and Instagram have filed a lawsuit in US federal court against four companies and three people based in the People’s Republic of China for promoting the sale of fake accounts, likes and followers.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Paul Grewal, Facebook’s Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, Litigation, made this known on Friday.

“They did this on both Facebook and Instagram as well as other online service providers including Amazon, Apple, Google, LinkedIn and Twitter.

“We’re also enforcing our rights under US intellectual property law for their illegal use of our trademarks and brand.

“By filing the lawsuit, we hope to reinforce that this kind of fraudulent activity is not tolerated – and that we’ll act forcefully to protect the integrity of our platform,” said the Facebook VP.

The lawsuit specifically asked the court to prevent these people and entities from “creating and promoting the sale of fake accounts, likes, and followers on Facebook and Instagram”; “infringing on our trademarks on their websites” and “using Facebook branded domain names to operate their websites (i.e. cyber squatting)”.

“Inauthentic activity has no place on our platform. That’s why we devote significant resources to detecting and stopping this behavior, including disabling millions of fake accounts every day.

“Today’s lawsuit is one more step in our ongoing efforts to protect people on Facebook and Instagram,” said Grewal.

Renowned American singer Ariana Grande 25, has racked up yet another spot with over 146.3 million followers surpassing Selena Gomez as the most followed woman on instagram.

Grande is likely to close the gap to Ronaldo by drawing more followers from Britain following news that she would be a headliner at a concert in Manchester in August.

Grande’s latest social-media achievement hardly comes as a surprise, considering that she’s gained more than 13 million new Instagram followers in the last four months and maintains a hyperactive presence on the platform.

Her new Instagram title comes on the heels of her record-breaking success with the release of her fifth full-length LP, Thank U, Next, which is spending a second week at No0.1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

  • Facebook, Instagram ban British far-right founder

Facebook, Instagram ban British far-right founder

Social media giant Facebook removed the accounts of British far-right founder Tommy Robinson, on Tuesday but his YouTube channel remained active.

Facebook said Robinson’s pages had repeatedly broken its standards by “posting material that uses dehumanising language and calls for violence targeted at Muslims.

“He has also behaved in ways that violate our policies around organised hate,” it said in a statement confirming it had removed Robinson’s official Facebook page and Instagram profile.

Gerard Batten, leader of the Brexit-focused UK Independence Party, appointed Robinson, 36, as an unpaid adviser in November 2018.

Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage said he was “appalled” by the appointment.

Batten urged Facebook on Tuesday to reinstate Robinson’s accounts and those of other senior UKIP members that were also removed “without any explanation whatsoever.”

“I am sure it is no coincidence that this is happening within 24 hours of the release of the ‘Panodrama’ documentary,” he said, referring to Robinson’s video accusing the BBC of bias over an investigation of him by the broadcaster’s Panorama programme.

In a post on YouTube on Monday, Robinson urged supporters to join a mailing list “so I can contact you when I eventually get deleted.”

The former leader of the English Defence League and co-founder of Pegida UK, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, has convictions for assault, public disorder and drugs offences.

Robinson was sentenced to 13 months in prison in May after broadcasting details of a trial in progress.
But he was freed on bail in August pending a decision on a possible retrial.

  • EU countries endorse copyright reforms targeted at Google, Facebook

European Union countries on Wednesday supported an overhaul of the Union’s copyright rules which would force Facebook and Google to pay publishers for news snippets.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports the copyright reforms would also force the two internet giants to filter out copyright-protected content on YouTube or Instagram.

A majority of EU diplomats agreed to the revamp while Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Poland refused to back the deal and two other EU countries abstained.

Negotiators from the EU countries, the European Parliament and the European Commission sealed a deal last week, two years after the EU executive proposed changes to protect the bloc’s cultural heritage and ensure that publishers, broadcasters and artists are remunerated fairly.

Romania, which currently holds the rotating EU presidency, said in a tweet that the copyright agreement had been approved by the EU Council.

The dissenting countries said the proposed changes could hinder innovation and hurt the bloc’s competitiveness in the digital market.

“We regret that the Directive does not strike the right balance between the protection of right holders and the interests of EU citizens and companies,” they said in a joint statement.

The next step in the process is a vote by a committee of lawmakers next week followed by a parliamentary vote either next month or early April before the changes can become law.

The revamp would require Google and other online platforms to sign licensing agreements with rights holders such as musicians, performers, authors, news publishers and journalists to use their work online.

Google’s YouTube and Facebook’s Instagram and other sharing platforms will have to install upload filters to prevent users from uploading copyrighted materials.

Google, which has lobbied against both features and has even suggested that it might pull Google News from Europe, said last week it would study the text before deciding on its next steps.

Man Utd to fine Pogba over ‘disrespectful’ post on instagram minutes Mourinho’s sacking

Paul Pogba is set to be fined by Manchester United for posting a ‘disrespectful’ picture on social media in the wake of Jose Mourinho’s sacking.

The photo of a smirking Pogba appeared on the player’s Instagram account on Tuesday with the message ‘caption this’.

The post was deleted 10 minutes later but not before it was liked by more than 64,000 people and drew a response from Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville who wrote: ‘You can do one as well!’

According to Dailymail, United bosses were angered by the post which they believe was in bad taste and disrespectful by the club’s £89million record signing. Pogba, who earns £300,000 a week at Old Trafford, is expected to be fined for his actions.

The breakdown of the Frenchman’s relationship with Mourinho has overshadowed much of the season at United.

Pogba was stripped of the vice-captaincy in September and left on the bench as an unused substitute for the manager’s last two league games.
