Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami denies agreeing to feature in Riyadh season cup

Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami has said that it has not agreed to compete in Saudi Arabia next February, refuting the claims by a promoter announcing earlier on Tuesday that the MLS team would face two Saudi clubs.

Recall that the internet is awashed with stories of a renewed rivalry between Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr plus another with Al-Hilal next February in the Riyadh Season Cup, the US squad denied any pre-season tour plans have been confirmed.

“Earlier today, an announcement was issued stating that Inter Miami CF is scheduled to play in the Riyadh Season Cup. This is inaccurate,” the Inter Miami statement said.

“The release included statements attributed to team owner Jorge Mas. Mas has made no comments, publicly or privately, in relation to the pre-season tour.

In this latest case, a Messi versus Ronaldo rematch proved too good to be true, Inter Miami’s statement said.

“Since day one, Inter Miami has set out to be a global brand. To this end, we have been in conversations to determine our 2024 pre-season schedule,” the statement said.

“We look forward to showcasing our players on Inter Miami’s first international tour, which will be announced in the coming weeks.”

Messi, 36, led Argentina to last year’s World Cup crown.

Last January, Ronaldo made his first appearance in Saudi Arabia following his move to Al Nassr with a Riyadh All-Star XI that lost 5-4 to a Paris Saint-Germain side featuring Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Sergio Ramos.

De Gea is a free agent after leaving United in July.

The Sun says the prospect of playing in MLS does hold some appeal for De Gea.

La Liga: Messi confirms Barcelona return

Ballon D’or winner and Inter Miami superstar, Lionel Messi has confirmed his plan to return to Barcelona football club of Spain.

The Argentine  admitted that his departure from the Nou Camp in 2021 left a “bitter taste”.

Messi bid farewell to Barca as their financial struggles made it impossible for the club to fund a contract extension.

He joined Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent and when presented a chance to rejoin the Catalans this summer, he opted to sign for Inter Miami.

Messi has not had the chance to bid a proper farewell to Barcelona fans and he has now confirmed his intention to fix that situation after winning his record-extending eighth Ballon d’Or in Paris on Monday evening.

“There was a bitter taste when I left and I don’t like that. I’d like to change the way the story ended.

“I deserve to say goodbye to the people that gave me so much joy. If it happens I’ll be very happy to be there of course,” he told reporters.

MLS: Messi speaks on leaving Inter Miami for European side on loan this season

Lionel Messi has reacted to speculations he was planning to leave Inter Miami on loan to play for another club once the MLS season is over.

Inter Miami missed the MLS playoffs by few points and are set to take on Charlotte FC in their last game on Saturday.

There were rumours flying around that the Argentine could return to Europe on loan during the MLS post-season break to keep up his match fitness.

However, when asked whether he was considering playing for another club in December, Messi said: “No.

“It’s a shame [we didn’t qualify]. We came very close. I missed the last few games, we had several injuries. The month of July was very hard for us, we played every three days, we travelled. But we won a tournament which is important for the club and for what is coming next year.

“I will train, I will play our upcoming match [against Charlotte FC] and I will try to get here [to the national team] in the best possible way for November. After that, I will enjoy the holidays in Argentina. It’s the first time that I am going to have more days off in December, with the holidays, with peace of mind, with my people. In January, I will return again to do preseason. Start from scratch and prepare as best as possible as always.”

Martino said: “Messi to Barcelona? Not to go for a stroll, right?

Messi magic lifts Inter Miami to Leagues cup title

Inter Miami beat Nashville SC in a thrilling Leagues Cup final on Saturday after a 1-1 tie was settled by a marathon 10-9 penalty shootout.

This was as Lionel Messi extended his winning streak since joining the MLS side to seven games.

Messi opened the scoring in the 23th minute, notching his 10th goal of the inaugural tournament with a blistering shot from distance past multiple defenders and into the top left corner of the net.

Nashville’s Fafa Picault leveled for the home team in the 57th minute and both teams came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the rollercoaster second half.

In the shootout, Nashville goalkeeper, Elliot Panicco, missed the final kick of the night to deliver Inter Miami, who joined the league in 2020, their first trophy.

Messi’s overjoyed teammates tossed the Argentine in the air as ecstatic Miami co-owner David Beckham shook his fists above his head in triumph.

“It’s a huge honour to play a role in our first win in a final,” said Miami goalkeeper, Drake Callender.

Callender was adjudged as the man-of-the-match after he saved two goals in the shootout and converted his own penalty.

“It’s pretty surreal and very emotional. This team works so hard day in and day out, and to have it come down to the very end… it’s amazing to see the grit and the belief.

“It’s something special and I’m blessed to be part of it,” said Callender.

Miami have the worst record in MLS this season, but Messi’s arrival has ignited an offensive explosion with the squad scoring 22 goals in their last seven games.

The trophy is Messi’s 44th, the most by any player. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was named player of the tournament, which includes teams from MLS and Liga MX.

“It was a tight game for both teams, either could have won it.

“It ended in a tie and I thought a tie was fair. And obviously it ended in penalties, which takes a lot of calmness, great capacity from the goalkeeper, and we won the game,” Miami head coach, Gerardo “Tata” Martino said.

The Miami club, who appointed Martino as coach last month and signed Messi’s former Barcelona team mates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, have also secured a CONCACAF Champions League berth with their Leagues Cup run.

“We weren’t doing well before and we had to incorporate a lot of new players.

“I’m very impressed with the way we came together,” said Martino.

Beckham reacts as Messi seals move to Inter Miami

Lionel Messi has completed his move to Inter Miami on a deal running to 2025, the Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit announced on Saturday.

The 36-year-old Argentina superstar revealed in June he had decided to join the Florida side as his contract with Paris St.-Germain (PSG) came to an end.

With the deal now officially done, Messi is in line to make his debut for his new employers on Friday against Mexico’s Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner said in a statement from the club: “I’m very excited to start this next step in my career with Inter Miami and in the U.S.

“This is a fantastic opportunity and together we will continue to build this beautiful project.

“The idea is to work together to achieve the objectives we set, and I’m very eager to start helping here in my new home.”

Inter Miami are co-owned by former England captain David Beckham, who said: “Ten years ago, when I started my journey to build a new team in Miami, I said that I dreamt of bringing the greatest players in the world to this amazing city.

“Players who shared the ambition I had when I joined LA Galaxy to help grow football in the U.S. and to build a legacy for the next generation in this sport that we love so much.

“Today that dream came true. I couldn’t be prouder that a player of Leo’s calibre is joining our club, but I am also delighted to welcome a good friend, an amazing person and his beautiful family to join our Inter Miami community.

“The next phase of our adventure starts here, and I can’t wait to see Leo take to the pitch.”

MLS commissioner Don Garber said: “We are overjoyed that the greatest player in the world chose Inter Miami CF and MLS, and his decision is a testament to the momentum and energy behind our League and our sport in North America.

“We have no doubt that Lionel will show the world that MLS can be a league of choice for the best players in the game.

“We look forward to seeing his debut for Inter Miami in our Leagues Cup tournament later this month.”

Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi arrives after a season in which he helped his country to World Cup glory in Qatar, as well as PSG to the Ligue 1 title.

This was as in his first campaign with the French clubside in 2021/2022.

That adds to an already huge trophy haul on his CV which features four UEFA Champions League successes from his years with FC Barcelona.

He scored a staggering total of 672 goals for the Spanish clubside.

Joining Miami sees Messi —- who has also netted more than 100 international goals —- reunite with coach Gerardo Martino, who he previously worked under with Barca and Argentina.

Martino was appointed in June after the club sacked Beckham’s ex-Manchester United team-mate Phil Neville.
