Serie A: Why I turned down Inter – AC Milan striker

AC Milan striker Rafael Leao admits he had the chance to sign for Inter.

The two giants face-off on Sunday.

“I chose Milan because the club’s directors had spoken with me before the others and this club was my top priority. When Milan call, you can’t say no,” Leao told Il Corriere dello Sport.

“Zlatan Ibrahimovic is like an older brother for me, he is a point of reference with a winning mentality that I’ve never seen in other players.”

On the derby, he added: “We must play with our hearts and minds. We want to defend the shirt and give a satisfaction to our fans.

“I want to help the team, I am ready to give my best, if I commit some technical mistakes, I hope I’ll make up with my character, with sacrifice and commitment.”

Ibrahimovic sent off as Inter Milan beat AC Milan in Italian Cup derby

Inter Milan came from behind to beat AC Milan 2-1 on Tuesday in an Italian Cup quarter-final which saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic dismissed after scoring the latter’s goal.

Ibrahimovic was ruthless on his first chance, firing low off the left post after entering the penalty box in the 31st minutes, But he was dismissed in the 58th minute.

Romelu Lukaku went on to draw Inter Milan level from the penalty kick spot.

The match referee also exited with a pulled muscle and was replaced by the fourth official with 10 minutes left, before substitute Christian Eriksen curled in the winning goal in stoppage time.

  • Inter Milan willing to send Eriksen to Arsenal

Inter Milan willing to send Eriksen to Arsenal

Inter Milan are willing to send Christian Eriksen to Arsenal this month.

Tuttosport says Inter Milan are looking to end Eriksen’s horror spell by lining up a swap deal that would take the former Tottenham star to Arsenal and see Lucas Torreira move the other way.

After signing from Spurs in a £25million deal, there was plenty of expectations on Eriksen’s shoulders but he has failed to live up to the hype at San Siro after struggling to adapt to Antonio Conte’s philosophy.

Meanwhile, fellow midfielder Torreira has struggled for game time since departing Arsenal on loan for Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

And Inter are now considering a swap deal between Eriksen and Torreira.

Man City open talks with Lautaro Martinez

Premier League side Manchester City are making a move for Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez.

With concerns over Sergio Aguero’s plans, City have sent out feelers to Lautaro’s camp about the prospect of a move to England in 2021.

Aguero’s deal expires in June and manager Pep Guardiola admitted last week they were waiting for a response from the Argentine over their new contract offer.

In the meantime, Goal says City have identified Lautaro as a potential successor.

And talks have already kicked off, with City registering their interest with the striker’s representatives.

Inter to offer Eriksen to Arsenal in return for Xhaka

Serie A outfit Inter Milan are interested in Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka.

And Corriere dello Sport says Inter are prepared to include Christian Eriksen in their offer in January for the Swiss.

Eriksen is on the outer at Inter, having only been signed in January this year from Tottenham, and has spoken of pushing to leave himself over the winter market.

A return to North London would suit the Dane – and Gunners manager Mikel Arteta, who has been keen to add a midfield schemer in the Eriksen mould since taking charge last season.

The stumbling block could be Eriksen’s ties to Spurs, though his acrimonious departure, with fans barracking him in his final weeks before departing, could work in Arsenal’s favour.

  • Madrid rekindle last 16 hopes with win over Inter

Madrid rekindle last 16 hopes with win over Inter

Real Madrid boosted their chances of reaching the UEFA Champions League knockout stages after a late winner by substitute Rodrygo.

The win gave them a 3-2 home victory over Inter Milan in an absorbing Group B clash on Tuesday.

The result left Real Madrid, winners of a record 13 titles in Europe’s premier club competition, level on four points with Shakhtar Donetsk.

They are one point behind leaders Borussia Moenchengladbach and two ahead of bottom placed Inter Milan.

Real Madrid had thrown away a two-goal lead and were flirting with a defeat which would have piled more pressure on manager Zinedine Zidane.

Then, their Brazilian duo of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo combined to save the day.

Chances had gone begging at either end before Karim Benzema gave the home side a 25th minute lead.

He rounded goalkeeper Samir Handanovic and slotted home after intercepting a dreadful backpass by Real Madrid’s former wing-back Achraf Hakimi.

The hosts seemed to be cruising after 33 minutes when Sergio Ramos headed their second — his 100th goal for the club in all competitions.

But Lautaro Martinez pulled one back for Inter Milan two minutes later, thanks to a sublime assist by Nicolo Barella.

Real Madrid were rattled when Ivan Perisic equalised midway through the second half.

He threaded a shot into the far corner from close range after Martinez headed the ball into the Croatian’s stride.

Inter Milan then missed a pair of gilt-edged chances as Martinez shaved the outside of the post with a shot from the edge of the area and Perisic fired wide, with Real’s defence in tatters.

The Italians were punished for their misses, however.

Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, brought into the fray together by Zidane shortly before Inter Milan equaliser, carved out the winner from a lightning fast break.

Vinicius Junior raced clear of his marker down the left flank and squared the ball back to Rodrygo, who beat Handanovic with an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 10 metres.

Inter Milan are now under pressure halfway through the group stage and will hope to have striker Romelu Lukaku back for the reverse fixture on Nov. 25.

That was after the Belgium striker missed the match with a thigh injury.

Kante ponders making this his last season at Chelsea

Chelsea star N’Golo Kante could make this his last season in England.

That’s according to family sources, who say Kante would be open to trying something new next summer.

Inter Milan are keen on the midfielder, though Le 10 Sport says his personal priority would be Real Madrid.

And a family source says: “A transfer will be easier to achieve next year.”

Inter made enquiries this summer, where Kante would be reunited his former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.

  • Lukaku named Europa League player of the season

Lukaku named Europa League player of the season

Belgian Romelu Lukaku has been named the Europa League player of the 2019/2020 season after the forward helped Italian side Inter Milan to the final with goals in every knockout round.

Lukaku, who revived his career in Italy with 34 goals in all competitions in his first season at the club, scored seven times in the Europa League in six matches.

This was after Inter Milan dropped down from the UEFA Champions League into the second tier competition.

Inter Milan lost the final match 2-3 to Sevilla of Spain in August, but the 27-year-old forward had done enough to sway the vote in his favour with 270 points.

He beat Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes (128) and Sevilla’s Ever Banega (118) to claim the prize.

“First of all, I will like to congratulate Sevilla personally for having won the final tournament,” Lukaku said in a pre-recorded message after the announcement was made during the Europa League draw.

“I want to thank my family and my agents for their support. I also want to thank my coach and the club staff, the board, and the president for their trust and for helping me throughout this season.

“Most importantly, I want to thank my team mates, who have been great with me from the first day I joined. They’ve been like brothers to me… Every day I come to training, I come with a smile… they make me want to work harder.”

The vote was made by a jury comprised of coaches from the 48 clubs which participated in the group stages and 55 journalists.

Inter Milan are back in the UEFA Champions League again this season, where they were drawn in Group B alongside 13-times champions Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Moenchengladbach.

  • Kante waiting for Inter to get serious over contract offer

Kante waiting for Inter to get serious over contract offer

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante is waiting for Inter Milan to firm up their transfer interest.

Kante is “open” to reuniting with former boss Antonio Conte at Inter Milan this summer, says Gazzetta dello Sport.

But the Italian giants must first raise money through player sales to afford the Blues’ £46million asking price.

Kante and Conte worked together at Stamford Bridge during the latter’s two-year reign in West London – winning the Premier League and FA Cup along the way.

And Conte believes that bringing the Frenchman to Italy could be the final piece in the jigsaw when it comes to ending Juventus’ dominance and winning the Serie A title this season.

Kante, 29, has started both of Chelsea’s opening two Premier League matches this term.

But Inter are confident that the Blues will sell if offered £46m.

Vidal lands in Milan to complete move to Inter

Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal is on the verge of sealing a move to Inter Milan from FC Barcelona after landing in Milan on Sunday.

Inter Milan’s official Twitter account published a photo of Vidal’s arrival and a video of the 33-year-old player saluting fans saying “Hi Inter, I’m here”.

Vidal, who joined Barca from Bayern Munich in 2018, is set to be reunited with Inter Milan coach Antonio Conte, who signed him for Juventus in 2011 and where he stayed until 2015.

Barca captain Lionel Messi paid tribute to his soon-to-be former team mate in a post on Instagram on Sunday.

“I only knew you from playing against you and I always thought you were a phenomenon. But, after being lucky enough to get to know you personally, you surprised me even more.

“We shared many things in the last two years and you made a huge impact on the dressing room and will be dearly missed.

“I wish you all the best luck in your new club and I’m sure our paths will cross again.”
