International friendly: Iheanacho, Dessers fire blanks as Super Eagles lose 2-0 to Mali

The Super Eagles of Nigeria ended the March international break on a losing note as they were defeated by the Eagles of Mali 2-0 in Marrakech on Tuesday night.

Atalanta striker El Bilal Toure scored first for the Malians inside 42nd minute after Nigeria had been pressured into a dreadful error in possession following a short goal kick, with Kamory Doumbia making the win safe with three minutes of normal time remaining.

Nigeria defeated Ghana 2-1 last Friday in a positive result and performance for George, the former Ajax and Real Betis winger who won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, but this display will have left him with plenty of concerns before they resume World Cup qualifying in June.

Toure, who has endured an injury-plagued season in Serie A, could barely believe his luck when defender Chidozie Awaziem tried to play a long square pass under pressure near the edge of the Nigeria box and succeeded only in crossing the ball straight to the Mali striker. He controlled well on his chest before bundling a finish past goalkeeper Stanely Nwabali.

The Super Eagles not only lost the match, Winger Moses Simon cropped a serious injury as he was streched off the pitch and was replaced by Rangers forward, Cyriel Dessers who also missed a glorious opportunity to score in the game.

Friendly: Second test for Finidi as interim coach looks set to lead Super Eagles against Mali

Former World Cup star Finidi George has reiterated his objective of securing a win in all two matches for which he has been selected to take interim charge of Nigeria in this international window, ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Les Aigles of Mali in Marrakech.

The two West African teams clash in a night game at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, where the three-time African champions put up a show to defeat arch-rivals Ghana 2-1 on Friday.

George must now do without defender Calvin Bassey and horsepower midfielder Frank Onyeka, who are injured and will not be part of Tuesday night’s ensemble against the 1972 AFCON runners-up.

Already, the Super Eagles have been highly-strung by the absence of key men like forwards Victor Osimhen and Victor Boniface, and defenders William Ekong, Olaoluwa Aina and Zaidu Sanusi. Defenders Gabriel Osho and Tyronne Ebuehi, and forward Taiwo Awoniyi also had to pull out because of injuries.

Yet, the former Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis winger is upbeat that those who dimmed the Black Stars will also fly above the other Eagles.

“We cannot at this time be dwelling on the injuries and absences that we have to cope with. Our intention has always been to win these two matches and then look forward to the World Cup qualifiers in June. We are determined to keep up the momentum and sustain the winning mentality derived from beating the Black Stars,” George said on Monday morning.

Incidentally, the last of Finidi George’s 62 caps for Nigeria came against the Eagles of Mali. ‘The Gazelle’ was involved when on 9th February, 2002 the Super Eagles pipped host nation Mali in the city of Mopti 1-0 to win the bronze medals of the 23rd Africa Cup of Nations.

Mali signalled their readiness for this encounter with a 2-0 spanking of Mauritania also in Morocco on Friday.

Absences and injuries, and George’s avowed intention not to overload players, could see goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo, defenders Kenneth Omeruo and Jamilu Collins, midfielder Alhassan Yusuf, and forwards Nathan Tella, Sadiq Umar and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru assume prominence in the encounter with the Les Aigles.

Int’l Friendly: Dessers, Lookman score as Super Eagles defeat 10-man Ghana 2-1 in Marrakech

Cyriel Dessers scored from the Penalty Spot inside 38 minute, while Ademola Lookman added the second in the 84th minute  to earn Super Eagles a win  in today’s international friendly against the Black Stars of Ghana.

Super Eagles was awarded a penalty in the 34th minute after the center referee from Morocco, Jalal  spotted an infringement against the Black Stars of Ghana.

Interim Coach, Finidi George continued with the 3-4-3 formation adopted for the Super Eagles at the 2023 AFCON by former coach, Jose Peseiro.

The Black Stars had an opportunity to equalize in the 42nd minute, when Antoine Semenyo was clear on goal but his shot went over the goal path.

Upon resumption of the second half, Kelechi Iheanacho blew the Super Eagles opportunity to add to their tally when his shot went straight to the waiting hands of the Ghana goalie.

However, in the 56th minute, the Black Stars went one man down when defender, Jerome Opoku was red carded for a very innocuous collision when challenging for a corner in the Super Eagles penalty area.

Meanwhile, another opportunity fell to Dessers but he blew a goal scoring chance in the 62nd minute of the thrilling encounter.

In the 84th minute, Atalanta forward, Ademola Lookman received a pass from the right flank and fired a shot that beat the Ghana goalie for Nigeria’s second goal of the night.

Late in the match, Moroccan referee spotted an infringement against the Super Eagles and awarded a penalty to the Black Stars, Jordan Ayew stepped up to convert it with a right footed shot that beat Super Eagles goalie Stanley Nwabali.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria missed a lot of Key players in this encounter with the likes of Troost Ekong, Victor Boniface,  Ola Aina all unavailable due to injury.

The Super Eagles’ next match will be on Tuesday in Marrakech  when they face the Eagles of Mali in the second international friendly match in March.

International Friendly: Jayed Jalal of Morocco to officiate Nigeria vs Ghana

Morocco’s Jayed Jalal has been appointed the centre referee for international friendly between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Black Stars of Ghana on Friday.

Jalal was one of the center referees at the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

The 36-year-old will be assisted by compatriots Akarhad Mostafa (Assistant I), Brinsi Zakaria (Assistant II) and El Fariq Hamza (fourth official).

The match between the two West African countries  is billed for Grand Stade de Marrakech

The Super Eagles and Black Stars will clash for the first time since the 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off in March 2022, when Ghana qualified at the expense of Nigeria after drawing 1-1 in Abuja following a goalless draw at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

The encounter will kick off at 5 pm Nigerian time.

Eagles, Black Stars duel in Marrakech with World Cup qualifiers in mind

Nigeria and Ghana will clash in a prestige international friendly match in Morocco on Friday with the minds of players of both teams attuned to their Matchday 3 and 4 encounters in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifying campaign in the first week of June.

The Super Eagles, with only two points from a possible six in their first two matches, entertain South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in Uyo before squaring up to the Cheetahs of Benin Republic away in the Matchday 3 and 4 games. Ghana’s Black Stars, with three points from beating Madagascar and losing away to Comoros, are up against Les Aigles of Mali in Bamako before hosting Central African Republic during the same international window.

While Nigeria are in Group C of the FIFA World Cup race alongside South Africa, Benin Republic, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Lesotho, Ghana are housed in Group I with Mali, Madagascar, Central African Republic, Comoros Islands and Chad.

Both teams, with seven AFCON titles between them, will duel without their top-impact players. Reigning African Player of the Year Victor James Osimhen, Nigeria’s major fear-carrier to the opposition, has had to scratch the big game due to an injury, same as his opposite number in the Black Stars camp, Mohammed Kudus.

The Black Stars will also play Uganda’s Cranes in Morocco, while the Super Eagles are up against Ghana’s group mates Mali on Tuesday.

Both Nigeria and Ghana were tied 0-0 in their last friendly game – played in London in October 2011.

Just as Thomas Partey’s first-half strike that went past Francis Uzoho’s flailing arms sent Ghana to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in a 1-1 draw with Nigeria in Abuja on 29th March 2022, Asamoah Gyan’s header that flew past Vincent Enyeama in Luanda on 28th January 2010 sent Ghana to the AFCON final and Nigeria to the third-place match.

The Super Eagles have not beaten the Black Stars in an official match since the latter fell to a well-taken free-kick by Taye Taiwo in an AFCON group phase encounter in Port Said, Egypt 18 years ago.

On Friday, opportunity arises for new heroes to emerge as Nigeria bank on AFCON 2023 stars Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon, as well as Kelechi Iheanacho and Sadiq Umar at the fore to light up the Grand Stade de Marrakech.

Italy-based Lookman’s three goals sent Cameroon (two) and Angola (one) packing from the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire and sent Nigeria to the last four.

Cyriel Dessers, who scored a delight against Mexico in a friendly in Dallas in the summer of 2022, and Nathan Tella are also available to Coach Finidi George.

At the rear, George is likely to stick to AFCON 2023 number one Stanley Nwabali in goal, and perhaps Chidozie Awaziem, Kenneth Omeruo, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey and Jamilu Collins behind a midfield of Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka or Alhassan Yusuf.

International Friendly: Super Eagles, Saudi Arabia settle for 2-2 draw

The Super Eagles of Nigeria played out a 2-2 draw with the Green falcon of Saudi Arabia at the Estádio Municipal de Portimão stadium in Portugal.

After a goalless first half, the Green Falcons of Saudi Arabia broke the deadlock in the 60th minute when Super Eagles goalie, Francis Uzoho’s howler gave the Asians the lead.

However, the Super Eagles counter-attacking and pressing football paid off in the 73rd minute when Saudi defender, Abdulelah Al-Amin scored an own goal to level scores for the West Africans.

Leicester City boy, Kelechi Iheanacho scored  the second goal for the  Super Eagles but referee added 10 minutes of additional time and the Green falcon leveled scores in the last second of the game.

Prior to the Super Eagles Friendly game, Saudi Arabia has lost 6 games across all competitions.

Nigeria will face fellow African side Mozambique on Monday in Portugal  for the second international friendly lined up for October.

  • Super Eagles adopt ‘Let’s Do It Again’ mantra for AFCON trophy quest

Super Eagles adopt ‘Let’s Do It Again’ mantra for AFCON trophy quest

Three-time champions Nigeria say they have adopted the catch-phrase ‘Let’s Do It Again’ as their battlecry towards winning a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title in Cote d’Ivoire early next year.

The proposition was tabled and unanimously endorsed before the final AFCON 2023 qualification match against the Falcons and True Parrots of Sao Tome and Principe in Uyo last month, and was the basis for players and officials donning a tee-shirt with the inscription after the match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo. The Eagles won that match 6-0.

Nigeria won the 1980 AFCON that she hosted, and also won the 1994 edition in Tunisia and the 2013 finals in South Africa. Team captain William Ekong says the playing body and crew have taken to the new mantra like bees to honey.

“We like the phrase because it gives us confidence and the go-go push. We have done it before so we can do it again. Winning the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire is our goal and we have the team to do just that.”

Defender Kenneth Omeruo added: “I look around and I see players who have the capacity to make it happen. We are all ambitious. The team is a blend of old and wise heads and exciting new talents. We will go for the trophy in Cote d’Ivoire.”

The song continues on Friday when the Super Eagles take on Saudi Arabia in a friendly game at the Estadio Municipal de Portimão in Portugal, with the bulk of the squad that blew away Sao Tome and Principe on ground.

It is only the second time both countries will be clashing at senior international level. The only previous encounter was also a friendly, played in the Alpenstadion, Wattens in Austria on 25th May 2010 as part of final preparations for the Eagles for the FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa. Nwankwo Kanu, one of only two players to have featured for Nigeria at three different editions of the FIFA World Cup, captained the Super Eagles in that scoreless encounter.

Incidentally, current Super Eagles’ Head Coach, Jose Peseiro, was Coach of Saudi Arabia that day.

The Eagles have another friendly encounter on Monday, against the Mambas of Mozambique at the same venue, before 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in November.
