eCommerce website features to finding best products online

eCommerce and its continuous explosion – thanks to the internet – has forever changed the way we shop for products and services.

We have witnessed – in the last 6 years of eCommerce debut in Nigeria – many impactful changes, such as the rise of online marketplaces; the seamless shift to using mobile devices for online shopping; the incredible growth of online and digital marketing and advertising; and the use of digital modifications in sales and mainstream consumer shopping.

Despite this remarkable innovation, many still find it very challenging to use these eCommerce platforms because they hardly understand how the features of these platforms work.

This article explains some common 6 features of eCommerce platforms that can assist shoppers to find the best products online.

    Reviews

    Star Rating (Seller’s Score)

Star Rating, also known as Seller’s Score, provides a first-hand description of previous buyers experience with a product and/or seller. If the previous buyers’ experience with a product or seller was subpar, the rating might be very poor, almost between 1 & 2-star. Jumia has activated this review to prevent new buyers from buying a product or interacting with a seller with low-quality products, and to assist new or returning buyers to find good products.

When you are shopping on Jumia, endeavour to – at all times – check the review score of each seller. More importantly, check for the number of shoppers per star rating. For instance, if 3 shoppers rated a seller 5-star, and about 16 shoppers rated same seller 2-star for the same product, you might want to avoid buying from such seller. When you shop on Jumia next time, endeavour to rate the seller based on the product quality and experience with the seller. This will guide other shoppers in making an informed decision on which seller to patronise.

    Successful Sales

    Number of Successful Sales

Vendors do not sign up on eCommerce websites just for fun. They want to make sales and of course, Jumia has provided a platform for them to achieve this aim. So, for customers who want to find the best products, the number of successful sales is one of the points to look out for. The rule here is very simple: the higher the sales, the better the quality of products and/or customer experience with the seller, and vice versa. For Jumia, the number of successful sales is clearly shown on the website to enable customers to make their buying decisions.

    Warranty

    Warranty

A warranty describes the conditions under, and a period during, which the producer or vendor will repair, replace, or compensate for a defective item without cost to the buyer or user. The caveat for the repair is that the damage must not be as a result of the buyer’s actions. This said, warranty generally give buyers the confidence that in the case of any fault, they are guaranteed repair or replacement at no cost. Hence, always look out for sellers who provide warranty for their products before shopping for an item. However, the warranty does not apply to all products.

    Delivery speed

    Delivery Speed

There is nothing like ordering a product and it is delivered same day. Fortunately, Jumia has decentralized its delivery process as you now have the option of same-day delivery through Jumia Express depending on your location, provided you purchased the item before 12pm. Jumia Express also offers free delivery to Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan and Abeokuta on orders above N15,000 (excluding large items). Compared to others, Jumia Express provides the quickest delivery in Nigeria compared to other logistics companies. So, if a product sold by a vendor on Jumia has Jumia Express on it (as shown in the image below), it means the product will be delivered same day you made the order and free of charge.

    All reviews

    Written Reviews (Sort By)

This is arguably one of the easiest ways for online shoppers to make a buying decision. Whenever you buy a product on Jumia, you are always prompted to review whatever you bought. This will help other buyers determine whether to buy from a particular vendor or not. Due to the strict vetting process by Jumia, most of our vendors have very good reviews. Reviews are sorted by best and worst rating.

    Return Policy

Free Return Policy (Within 7 Days)

Returning a product at no cost is one of the ways to know where to find best products online. This is because customers are more likely to shop on a platform that offers free returns within 7 days. This is exactly why Jumia is unique, as customers have a 7-day time frame to return a product at no cost.

  • Cybercrime damage to hit $6 trillion

Cyber security ventures are suggesting that damage by global cybercrime would hit six trillion dollars annually by 2021, Mr John Bray, U.S. Consul-General in Nigeria, has said.

Bray made the disclosure at the opening of a two-day conference organised by Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (CSEAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.

The consul-general, at the conference themed: “Mitigating Cyber Threats in the Digital Age”, said that cybercrime might soon become more profitable than global trade.

He also expressed worry that applications and infrastructure being built with an agile mindset could be easily adapted for purposes not originally conceived by their coders.

Bray said that, with Internet of Things (IoT) and the growth of the digital movement, there would be continuous increase of cybercrime.

“As the world embraces the IoT, big data, cloud and mobility, security must be more than an afterthought.

“With new threats appearing on a daily basis, and attackers continuously refining their techniques, it could be difficult to keep up.

“Businesses and government agencies need to evolve more infrastructure to cope with the ever-changing threats.

“Landscape organisations can no longer merely react to threats but need to create infrastructure that are agile and adaptive where breaches are addressed before they happen,” he advised.

Bray said that cyber security must become an enabler of businesses, lifestyles, healthcare and a better society.

He urged that workshops, plenary and breakout sessions at the conference should fully explore the issues and further prepare Nigeria’s cyber security industry for evolving challenges of the cyber space.

The envoy also urged Nigerians to join the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s ongoing cyber security awareness campaign tagged “Stop. Think. Connect”.

Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman, Nigeria Communications Commission, said that although the commission was not a security agency, it ensured that there was an enabling environment to assist security agencies in telecom-related security incidents.

He said that Nigeria was facing numerous challenges in cybercrime management as a result of absence of comprehensive and reliable demographic and biometric database.

“We also have insufficient expertise in the area of cyber and information security.

“We do not have sufficient inter- agency, regional and international collaborations, ” he said.

The executive vice chairman said that the commission had played several roles in combating cybercrime and developing cyber security.

“We have put in place relevant regulations to support security agencies such as registration on lawful interception.

He added that the commission championed national SIM card registration, noting that the registration matched each SIM card with a biometric identity that served as a key database which governments and crime management programmes could rely on.

Danbatta also said that the commission played a major role in the implementation of national cyber security strategy.

Danbatta said that CSEAN was a partner in the “Stop. Think. Connect” campaign aimed at helping global digital citizens to stay safer and more secure.

He advised Nigerians to be more vigilant and develop safe online habits.

  • SA improves emphasis on IoT as digital strategies now focus on the technology

SA improves emphasis on IoT as digital strategies now focus on the technology

South African businesses are being forced to redefine value chains as a result of the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT).

This is according to Eseye, a leading M2M connectivity provider and an advanced network infrastructure provider for IoT.

Jeremy Potgieter, Eseye Southern African Regional Manager, says that digitising physical and disconnected processes, and allowing products and services to be processed and delivered in new ways, are just some of the immediate challenges when redefining a value chain.

“There are several examples of South Africa’s attempts to roll out Internet-connected devices. Closer to home are the smart meters used to measure household utility usage.

“Industry-specific examples include the mining sector’s new connected technology and sensors used to detect geological movement, and possible substance availability; fuel pipelines fitted with sensors to monitor leaks and fuel stations with data loggers, which advise owners and operators on stock levels and usage trends,” he said.

Potgieter says that South Africa is also starting to see the use of monitoring data for various forms of analytics, such as predictive and prescriptive analytics that assist businesses with rapid decision making: “As the benefits of IoT related services are being realised, IoT is creating new opportunities to innovate with newly connected products being imagined every day. It is only a matter of time before its full potential is seen”.

Despite South Africa’s skills shortage, Potgieter says that the country’s socio-economic challenges provide opportunities and stimulus to incubate the correct thinking: “We already see this in the way that industry and businesses have revised their digital strategy to include a focus on IoT and the resulting high-value data analytics. These strategies are complemented by an active acquisition of data scientists and software engineers. There have also been efforts by tertiary institutions to align to the changing landscape, enabling and equipping students for careers in the new marketplace”.

The biggest hurdle impacting the growth of IoT locally lies in driving critical and analytical thinking as a medium of education, according to Potgieter. If these are not embraced fully, the human capital required to drive such initiatives, will be lacking.

“While the introduction of focused degree-courses is a good start, more needs to be done. We have a disproportionately low amount of school learners taking on subjects like science and core maths and the knock-on effect is a smaller pool of candidates. The solution as always is highlighted by the problem, drive the fundamental subject matter to ensure a larger pool of candidates for selection. The only way new and practical solutions can be developed is when current problems are viewed with a critical eye,” says Potgieter.

Looking globally, he says that it is possible for South Africa to embrace and experience global IoT trends: “We already see companies like Takealot rivalling the likes of Amazon from a localised point of view, and by utilising IoT and data analytics they have single handedly started a retail revolution. It is on the back of their success that we saw the rise of services like Zando and Superbalist.”

Potgieter says that vertical sectors are already starting to utilise IoT. Logistics companies for example, are boosting business through enhanced efficiency by way of EPOD (electronic proof of delivery) services and real-time asset tracking and management: “Utilities providers are also delivering extended capabilities to traditional smart metering solutions, like intuitive and scheduled autonomous management. A further example is the deployment of wildlife management solutions through partnerships between MNOs and SI providers. The use of drones for agri-business and security sectors is also being embraced by farming communities and industrial/mining players.”

IoT is a vital catalyst for change according to Potgieter and South Africa is only at the precipice of this evolution: “Exciting time lies ahead for IoT and Eseye is looking forward to playing a vital role in this journey.”

  • Interesting reasons to still buy a tablet

Interesting reasons to still buy a tablet

Many people would have you believe that you don’t need a tablet anymore, that everything you use a tablet for can be done just as well or better with another device.

So, if you have a tablet and have stopped using it, or you never bought one, Jumia Nigeria, the online shop you can trust, highlights some reasons why you may want to reconsider and/or start using one.

    Perfect for movies and music

Sure your laptop can play your music and movies; however, tablets just do it better. There’s nothing better than entertaining yourself on a long trip than with a tablet loaded with your favourite music and movies and it is easy to take with you.

    Longer battery life

Laptop batteries are improving, but how many people really get 8 to 10 hours of life out of your laptop? Not very many. Tablets, however, will last much longer than many laptops without needing a charge. This gives you much more time to use them before they will have to stop and plug them in.

    Good for meetings and classes

Tablets make the perfect piece of technology to take to a meeting and classes. Today’s tablets make it easy for you to take notes while you are listening to the presenter and, if you happen to be presenting, you can even run your presentation straight from your tablet instead of having to carry with you a laptop.

    Better internet browsing

Internet browsing on a tablet is a mixed experience; it draws the line between mobile and desktop web pages. As websites vary from different publications, having the middle ground is wonderful. The text is more readable and browsing is as smooth as you’d expect from a mobile-optimized site.

Tablets are cheaper than a new laptop

A tablet works as well as a laptop. However, many persons do not use it even though it is cheaper and affordable than a laptop.

  • JUST IN: APC announces new official Internet platforms

Following reports by TheNewsGuru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) rejigging its Internet platforms, the ruling party has announced the launch of a newly-designed website and other official social media handles.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi made this known on Sunday after the party recently acknowledged that it had no official Twitter handle and distanced itself from the @APCNigeria Twitter handle.

“The newly-designed website features a streamlined and uncluttered design, offering user-friendly functionality and rich content. This website as well as the official social media accounts offer quick and easy access to essential information and features to keep party members, the media and indeed the general public abreast of party activities, the APC-led federal government and APC-governed states.

“Visitors are encouraged to explore the new website and sign up for APC’s mailing list and newsletter to receive direct emails on the Contact Us page. Also follow the APC on the listed social media accounts,” the APC scribe stated.

The new APC website and social media accounts are: www.officialapcng.com; Twitter, https://twitter.com/OfficialAPCNg; Facebook, https://web.facebook.com/officialapcng/; Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/officialapcng/; and YouTube; Official APC Nigeria.

Findings by TheNewsGuru, amongst other information published here, reveals that the newly launched APC website is being managed by one Ololade Otayemi who operates Orbra I.T.C. located in Lokogoma, Abuja.

The APC said its new website will be regularly updated with news on party accomplishments and events.

  • APC Nigeria moving platforms

From all indications, Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is rejigging its platforms on the Internet, ranging from its websites to its social media handles.

TheNewsGuru reports Twitter erupted in confusion on Saturday after Spokesman of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi disowned the party’s supposed official account, @APCNigeria.

This is following reports that the account was ‘sold’ as reported in some quarters in the media or hacked as TheNewsGuru.com verifiably reports.

Today, Personal Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media, Bashir Ahmad further disowned the @APCNigeria Twitter handle and revealed the party “is now officially on Twitter”.

“Our great party, the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) is now officially on Twitter. Kindly follow @OfficialAPCNg. Also on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube,” he tweeted.

    APC bashir ahmed

When TheNewsGuru assessed the various Internet platforms of the ruling party, findings reveal that the APC is actually moving platforms, which includes a new domain name registration that has one Ololade Otayemi as registrant.

TheNewsGuru findings reveal that Mr. Otayemi, who operates Orbra I.T.C. located in Lokogoma, Abuja registered the www.officialapcng.com domain name on Monday 9th April 2018.

The first tweet on the APC new official Twitter handle dated Tuesday 10 April 2018, and the first post on the party’s new official Facebook page dated Sunday 8 April 2018, confirm the new domain name registration, and efforts the party is putting in to rejig its Internet platforms.

The APC official website is being hosted on a German server by Softlayer Technologies Inc, and efforts to reach Olalade to confirm the findings repeatedly returned: “The MTN number you are trying to call is currently switched off; please try again later” as at the time of filing this report.

The party’s Instagram handle, created today, is presently having 29 followers; and while the new Twitter handle is having 22 followers, the new Facebook page is having 106 page likes.

In a phone conversation with TheNewsGuru.com, the manager of the APC former Twitter handle, Phillip Obin, confirmed the account was hacked and not sold.

“The account was hacked, but I am currently engaging Twitter to help restore it… we have gotten an assurance that the challenge will be sorted out soonest” he said.

According to a tweet from the hacker, the account was reportedly sold for ‘$2k’. The hacker also went ahead to post tweets relating to the sale and purchase of bitcoins.

A Twitter user who goes by the name Justin Sun on his Twitter handle is alleged to have claimed that someone he identified as “Nigerian president” sold the official @APCNigeria Twitter handle to him.

A rapidly circulating tweet with suspicious verified Twitter handle, “Justin Sun @APCNigeria,” shows one Mr. Justin Sun threatening to reveal all the correspondences between him and a supposed president of Nigeria if his demands were not met.

In the Tweet allegedly posted at 7.52pm on Saturday, April 14, 2018, Justin Sun, who resides in San Francisco, state of California, USA, asked to be paid $100,000 for him to shut up about how APC’s Twitter handle became his personal possession.

The trending tweet supposedly by Justin Sun reads: “If the president of Nigeria does not pay me $100K, I’ll post all the correspondence here, and the whole world will see it.”

According to information available on Mr Justin Sun’s verified Twitter handle, he is the founder of Tron Foundation and he is one of Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 entrepreneurs and the First Millennial Graduate of Hupan University Founded By Jack Ma of the Alibaba Group.

“Justin Sun graduated from Hupan University as the program’s first millennial graduate. Sun received his diploma from Principal Jack Ma and updated him on the latest developments at #TRON. Sun also expressed his gratitude towards Principal Jack Ma for his unwavering support. #TRX,” another information on Justin Sun’s Twitter handle read.

Suffice to say, a perusal of Mr. Justin Sun’s official Twitter handle showed that his last post was seven hours ago, and he seemed to be unaware of the controversies surrounding his Twitter handle.

Meanwhile, the @APCNigeria Twitter handle has undergone several metamorphic processes since it was taken over, whether hacked or sold.

“It is to checkmate the activities of these undisciplined elements who want to reap where they did not sow.

“By this action, we are also sending a red alert to the so-called yahoo-yahoo boys that engaging in fraudulent deeds, does not pay,” the Zonal Head said while speaking on the Commission’s renewed clampdown on Internet fraudsters

TheNewsGuru reports the arrested suspects are: Ale Daniel, Tunde Badmus, Adams Tunde Adedeji and Ajiboye Gbenga.

The quartet were arrested following intelligence report received by the Commission about their activities, alleging that they were living flamboyantly without known sources of income.

Ezima urged landlords, particularly in gated communities, to always carry out background checks on their tenants so as not to unwittingly run afoul of Section 3 (Three) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006.

“A person who, being the occupier or is concerned in the management of any premises, causes or knowingly permits the premises to be used for any purpose which constitutes an offence under this Act commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of not more than 15 years and not less than five years without the option of a fine,” the Section read.

According to the RFCC, the suspects will soon be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
