FG`s directives on COVID-19 alters NFF investigative panel’s work plan

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), on Tuesday said the work plan of its investigative panel on the death of Nasarawa United FC player, Chineme Martins had been altered.

The cancellation was as a result of the directives of the Federal Government on the raging coronavirus outbreak.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the panel constituted by the NFF was expected to look into the circumstances surrounding the death of Nasarawa United FC player, Martins during a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match in Lafia on March 8.

The committee was mandated to investigate the medical, security and administrative lapses which led to the untimely demise of the defender.

Dr Peter Singabele, a former member of the NFF Executive Committee and member of the Committee on Sports Medicine of the Confederation of African Football, is the Chairman of the 12-man panel.

The committee was expected to submit its final report on Thursday to the Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare in Abuja.

However, a statement by Ademola Olajire, NFF’s Director of Communications, said following the current trend of events arising from the Covid-19 scourge, the panel had temporarily suspended its activities including submission of its final report.

It noted that the change in work plan had also been approved by the NFF leadership.

The statement also quoted Singabele as saying that the members had been working tirelessly since the inauguration of the committee in Benin City on March 16.

“We have inspected facilities in Benin City and Lafia, and spoken to personalities who were involved one way or the other in the organisation of the match in which the player died.

“We have been able to extract useful information all round. Our plan was to submit the report to the minister on Thursday.

“We returned from Lafia on Tuesday morning, but have had to change our plans because of the trend of events and the pronouncement by Mr President himself, as well as other directives by the Federal Government,“ he said.

The chairman said that if the committee had a challenge in its job, it was the risk that members took to interact with people at this trying period in Nigeria.

“I won’t say strictly that there were challenges. If there was a challenge; it was that we took a big risk moving around at this time.

“We were bound to hold meetings and meet people and we could not tell who was infected at any time.

“We just have to observe preventive measures by returning to our homes and continuing to work from there,” he said.

The panel also assured members of the football family its findings and recommendations would be submitted as soon as the current health challenge is under control.

Other members of the committee include Amanze Uchegbulam, Chairman of the Imo State Football Association and former first Vice President of the NFF as well as respected technocrat Abba Abdullahi Yola.

  • PDP demands full, immediate investigation into alleged N90bn FIRS scandal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded a system-wide investigation into the alleged siphoning of N90 billion from the coffers of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in which top members of the Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been mentioned.

A statement on Tuesday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, cautioned that there should be no cover up of the alleged humongous corruption scandal, which the party said involved highly placed individuals.

It lamented that in the face of excruciating hardship being endured by Nigerians, a government, which came into office on the mantra of change and zero tolerance for corruption, has become enmeshed in atrocious acts of corruption.

Saying that the allegation speaks volumes of the character of the present administration, the party further stated that it’s unfortunate that a top member of the federal cabinet is being fingered in the alleged siphoning of monies collected as taxes from millions of impoverished Nigerians.

“Our party notes that this shocking allegation directly borders on gross misconduct and breach of public trust.

“The party, therefore, rejects the flimsy denials and threats being pushed through the FIRS as a belated attempt at cover-up by persons close to the Presidency.

“It is therefore held that the delay by the Buhari Presidency in applying established statutory processes and procedures of ordering an investigation into the issue only goes to confirm that the Buhari administration is a citadel of corruption.

“This is more so as reports are already in the public domain of how the money stolen from FIRS, was allegedly diverted to private purses and for other extraneous purposes, including the 2019 extravagant campaigns of the APC.

“Nigerians expect that all our national resources should always be used to ensure the welfare of the citizenry and must be accounted for at all times”, the party said.

  • FG commences ‘secret’ investigation into bank accounts of Lawan, Gbajabiamila, CJN others

The Federal Government has commenced an investigation into bank accounts belonging to Senate President Ahmed Lawan, his deputy, Ovie Omo-Agege; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; his deputy, Idris Wase, as well as the principal officers and members of the National Assembly.

The probe conducted by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) would also investigate accounts owned by Nigeria judges including the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammad.

The bank accounts of “other relevant politically exposed persons,” are also included.

The NFIU has taken a giant step in their secret investigation and written to all banks in the country, to send the banking information of the names under investigation.

The letter signed by the NFIU’s Associate Director, Analysis and Compliance, Fehintola Salisu, gave the banks up till September 13 (Friday) to comply with the directive.

The letter addressed to all Chief Compliance Officers of the banks was tagged “Request for information on all accounts of 1. the National Assembly. 2. All accounts of all the members of the National Judicial Council. 3. All accounts of all the members of the National Assembly. 4. Accounts of principal officers (Management) of National Assembly Service Commission. 5. All accounts of principal officers of the judiciary.”

“Kindly provide the NFIU with a schedule (account names and account numbers) of the National Assembly, members of National Assembly and principal officers of National Assembly Service Commission, as well as all accounts of National Judicial Service Commission and their principal officers, including judges and other relevant politically exposed persons.

“Kindly note that your response is expected on or before September 13, 2019,” the letter read.

However, when questioned, the NFIU Director, Modibbo Tukur, said he was not aware of the letter, but stated that the banks could be punished for leaking the content of the letter, which he described as an “operational issue”.

He said, “You must have seen that the letter was not signed by me. It is an operational issue.

“If it is an operational issue, leaking it is an offence. It is a punishable offence.

“If they are doing their analysis, it may not come to my knowledge. I will find out if you want me to do so.

“But the person you mentioned that signed the letter is an operational director. So anything she signs is confidential. I am even surprised at how the banks allowed it to leak. It is punishable.”

Reacting to the exercise, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr Peter Akpatason, said it was a routine process by the security and intelligence agencies.

He said: “I am not aware (of it) but I think it is a routine thing that they do. I don’t think there is any big deal about it.

“It is a normal thing. Ideally, they should have the account details of business people, politicians and others.”

When asked about the possibility of clamping down on targeted persons, the legislator said, “I do not think it is targeted at any particular person. It is a routine thing they are doing and they have the right to do it.”

However, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, criticised the NFIU’s directive to the banks. He stated that it is purely invasion of privacy.

According to Adeyeye, many of the senators were businessmen before they were elected to the red chambers, he argued that the NFIU knows where to go to find out the earnings of lawmakers and not their bank.

“The salary and emoluments of the lawmakers are being determined by an agency of government that is well known. They can find out what the senators earn from them.

“I don’t think it is right to ask banks to expose details of the accounts of each lawmaker because many of them are private businessmen and women until their election to the National Assembly.

“Publishing the accounts of the senators is purely an invasion of privacy,” he said.
