  • Meet the new ‘seductive’ Twitter design

In efforts to ‘seduce’ newcomers, Twitter once again is redesigning its app across mobile, desktop and the web.

The revamp isn’t a radical departure from its prior look-and-feel or user experience – unlike when it introduced its own stories-like feature called Moments, for example, or when began reordering the tweets in your timeline. Instead, the update involves a series of smaller tweaks to things like where your settings are located, the typography used, the shape of its icons, and more.

However, for iOS power users, there will still be a bit of muscle memory loss that’s likely to follow this update – just as there was when it relocated the revamped “Explore” section to sit where your “Notifications” tab used to be.

    ImageFile: Twitter new design1

The same will now hold true for Settings on iOS.

Instead of tapping over to your profile, then to the gear icon, everything Settings-related has been moved over to a new left-side navigation menu. That means there’s also no longer a “profile” button at the bottom of the app, which Twitter says reduces clutter. You’ll now swipe right on the homescreen to reveal the new menu, where you’ll find your profile, additional accounts, and other privacy options.

Android users received this change last summer, and, because of their positive response, it’s today making its way to iOS.

Other parts of the Twitter app have also seen some changes.

Profile icons across Twitter are now round instead of square – as seen in recent testing. Plus, typography is more consistent, while headlines – like “In Case You Missed It” or “Trending Now” – are bolder to better separate them from the content.

    ImageFile: Twitter new design2

More noticeably, Twitter has changed its Reply icon.

The icon before was a fairly standard and recognizable symbol – at least for anyone who’s ever used an email account, and understands how to respond to a message. But in an effort to appeal to the lowest common denominator of “newbie” web user, the arrow has now been swapped out in favour of a conversation bubble. (Because when in doubt, copy Facebook?)

Though not earth shattering, the change further distances Twitter from its roots. Twitter originally was an SMS-based messaging service – hence its 140 character limit, for instance. Later it became more like being able to have a group chat on the web. Turning it into a place where you can more generally post text updates, photos, videos, and now, “comment” on them makes it ever more Facebook-like, and therefore less differentiated, and less special.

Though the Reply icon is gone, the Retweet, Like (heart), and DM icons have also been refreshed, along with the Home, Search, Notifications, and DB tab icons at the bottom of the screen. But none of the others have been changed to new symbols.

Meanwhile, tweaks users have demanded for years – like editing tweets remain generally unaddressed.

    ImageFile: Twitter new design4

The one change that iOS users may actually cheer today is one that’s buried under the hood. With the update, Twitter will now open web links in Safari’s View Controller within the Twitter app. That means you can more easily access accounts on websites you’re signed into, notes Twitter. But it also means if you use a Safari ad-blocker, it will finally work in Twitter’s app.

You can even configure the app to always open links in Safari’s Reader view, if you choose. Technically this option is an accessibility enhancement, along with another that increases colour contrast.

Other perks that come with Safari’s Viewer include support for AutoFill, fraudulent website detection, and it will respect the Do Not Track privacy setting as configured in your iOS settings.

Twitter says all the changes will roll out today to Twitter for iOS and Twitter for Android through an app update to version 7.0.

Twitter.com, TweetDeck and Twitter Lite will also see the changes starting today.

  • Some really bad news for iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPad 4 users

Some really bad news for iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPad 4 users

If you are one of the remaining people still rocking an iPhone 5 or iPhone 5c, Apple has confirmed some really bad news for you.

The iPhone 5, iPhone 5c and the iPad 4 are all being left in the dust by Apple, as the tech giant has confirmed the new operating system, iOS 11, set to be rolled out later this year will effectively make the device obsolete in terms of Apple’s ecosystem.

The software update will run only on devices with a 64-bit processor, meaning it won’t be compatible with the guts of the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5c that feature 32 bit processors. The same goes for the iPad 4.

While the phone will still work (and it’s a little bit amazing that it still does), users won’t be able to download the latest apps or security upgrades to protect against hackers and vulnerabilities.

Such a move has previously been hinted at by Apple, with users opening 32-bit software in iOS 10.3 being met with a message saying the app will not work with future versions of iOS.

And back in 2015, Apple told developers that all new apps had to be written in 64-bit code.

The first iPhone 5 went on sale nearly five years ago and was the last Apple smartphone to be overseen by Steve Jobs.

It was the company’s second iPhone to support five major versions of iOS: six, seven, eight, nine and 10. But that run has now come to an end.

Whether it is planned obsolescence or just the natural order of things, the iPhone 5 is not long for this world.

Apple integrates peer-to-peer payments solution in Apple Pay

At its Worldwide Developer Conference in San Jose yesterday, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, announced a hot new feature in iOS 11 — peer-to-peer payments in Apple Pay.

That means that you can use the company’s contactless payment system to send and receive money from your contacts directly through the Messages app.

    ImageFile: Apple Pay iPhone

This feature is available as an iMessage app, and can be invoked from the new app drawer in Messages.

You’ll be able to choose from all the debit and credit cards in your Wallet, authenticate payments with TouchID, and your contact will receive the money in their Apple Pay Cash account.

They can then transfer the amount to their bank, make Apple Pay purchases, or send it to others.

Apple Pay’s new functionality will be available across iOS 11 devices, as well as Apple Watch.

  • Apple finally gives iOS proper file management system with new Files app

Apple finally gives iOS proper file management system with new Files app

Apple has at long last introduced a much-needed file management application for iOS that gives iPhone and iPad users significantly more control over their files.

According to an announcement made during the company’s flagship software WWDC keynote, the app will be called Files.

The management system will come with support for nested folders and spring loading. It will additionally offer a search option as well as a dedicated ‘Favourites’ tab for easy access.

This is a massive move for Apple as it will virtually transform iOS from a mobile operating system to something with legitimate desktop potential.

ImageFile: Apple new file management system

The closest thing to a file management system iOS previously had was iCloud drive as well as third-party solutions like Dropbox.

With the launch of Files, the company is giving iPhone and iPad users more flexibility to use their mobile devices as improvised desktop stand-ins — as far as file management goes at least.

The good thing about the app is that it will continue to work with iCloud and third-party apps like Dropbox, Adobe Creative Crowd and more.

In addition to the update to Files, Apple is also updating the file management system on macOS. The new High Sierra will land with a revamped file system with built-in crash protection measures, ‘Safe’ document saving functionality and native encryption.

Among other things, the newly introduced Apple File System (APFS) will support instant file and directory cloning, zero copy snapshots and fast directory sizing.

  • The best way to block spam calls on your Smartphone

The best way to block spam calls on your Smartphone

The idea for caller ID emerged in 1968, perfected and widely used in the 80s but it wasn’t until recently technology is taking its root in Nigeria that we started adopting its use.

The technology had to go through many different engineers and developers, who eventually were able to perfect it.

Usually with caller ID, if a phone number is already in your contacts, you’ll see the person’s name and number, and it might include a profile picture, too. But what about the numbers you don’t recognize? How can you tell if it’s someone you need to call back or not?

Recently, we presented you with 6 tricks financial fraudsters use to steal your money, and it can be really frustrating when they keep calling.

The Truecaller app is the best app there is to block spam calls on your Smartphone. It’s free and lets you find out who’s behind that unknown number. Just copy and paste the number then throw it in the search bar embedded in the app.

Truecaller will then search the unknown number to find out who it is. There are more than 1.6 billion numbers in the database, so Truecaller should have no problem identifying the caller for you.

The great feature of Truecaller is its ability to block spam calls. When a pesky telemarketer calls, there will be a big warning in red, telling you that it’s a spam call.

Simply swipe up when this happens to automatically block that caller and add them to the spam list. Next time they call you, you will see a screen like this:

    ImageFile: Truecaller identified as scam

Truecaller will also fill in any missing details about someone already in your contacts lists, for example, it might add a person’s Twitter handle. It will also show you how you are connected to that person.

The free Truecaller app is available for iOS, Android and Windows Mobile.

  • How to Reset or Hard Reboot an iPhone or iPad

How to Reset or Hard Reboot an iPhone or iPad

Despite all of Apple’s engineering efforts, there are some times when your iPhone or iPad stops responding to your touch and you need to reset iPhone. And no matter how long you hold down the power button, the option to power off your phone just doesn’t show up.

Essentially, the iPhone or iPad has hung due to a software bug, caused by either iOS itself, or a misbehaving app.

In such a case, there’s a straightforward way around the problem. That involves forcing your iPhone or iPad to restart – called a reset or hard restart, and erroneously, even hard reset iPhone by some – by holding down a combination of two buttons for 10 seconds or more, which will then clear all running processes and well, forcibly reboot the device.

It’s not recommended that you do this unless your device is frozen, but sometimes it can be an essential last resort.

Starting with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the Home button isn’t a physical button anymore. That’s why the button combination is different on those devices, as opposed to the older models before that.

How to reset/ hard reboot on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

This method works on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. To force your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus to hard reset aka reboot iPhone, press and hold down the Sleep/Wake button on top of your device, and the volume down button on the side of the phone, until the screen goes black and Apple logo appears in the middle. This might take up to 20 seconds, so don’t let go until you see the Apple logo.

How to reset/ hard reboot on older iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, and older iPhone models

This method works on all iPhone and iPad models, except the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. To force your iPhone or iPad to hard reboot aka reset, press and hold down the Home button (under the display) and the power button (or the Sleep/Wake button, as Apple calls it) on top of the device, until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears in the middle. This method works with the iPads as well.

  • Beware! This WhatsApp scam can hit you big!

Beware! This WhatsApp scam can hit you big!

Another day, another WhatsApp scam, this time one that tries to trick users into paying charges by saying their WhatsApp subscription has expired.

WhatsApp, of course, is free to use, and has been for some time, though the service used to charge a nominal amount as annual subscription fee when it had initially launched.

It seems the latest WhatsApp scam is playing on this distant memory of its users to try and extract some money.

How the WhatsApp subscription expired scam works

“People are being targeted by a message that reads ‘your subscription has expired, and to verify your account and purchase a lifetime subscription for just 0.99 GBP simply tap on this link’,” Independent.co.uk reported.

By encouraging people to click on the suspicious link, scam artists are tricking people into providing their payment details. People who have received the WhatsApp message should delete it immediately.

WhatsApp users should be on the lookout as scam artists are trying to charge users for using the instant messenger by faking a subscription fee.

Like we mentioned earlier, WhatsApp is free to download and use, but used to charge a small fee several years ago which no longer exists.

In case you have clicked on the link, safeguard yourself by running an antivirus software on your device to ensure you are not being infected with malware.

Users can also block the sender, so that they can no longer message or call through WhatsApp.

  • Florida man jailed for not releasing iPhone code

Florida man jailed for not releasing iPhone code

A man in Florida, United States accused of “hitting and scratching” his young daughter has been jailed for almost six months for not providing police with a lock code to access his iPhone.

Christopher Wheeler was adamant that the code he gave to law enforcement officers was correct, but the iPhone’s lock screen did not yield.

The Florida court judge presiding over the case, who previously found Wheeler, 41, guilty of contempt of court, demanded that he turn over the correct four-digit number sequence, but Wheeler argued: “I swear, under oath, I’ve given [the detectives] the password.”

The iPhone in question is presumed to hold potential evidence of the injuries Wheeler is accused of inflicting on his daughter.

Despite receiving a search warrant for the smartphone, however, any possible photos were unable to be used in the case due to the passcode barrier.

Wheeler, who was arrested in March, was eventually jailed for 180 days, although according to the Miami Herald he will be released if he relinquishes the correct passcode.

Apple’s notoriously secure iOS software has proved to be a significant hurdle in a number of court cases and police investigations over the years. The most high-profile case led to a bitter legal stand-off between the FBI and the Cupertino giant after the iPhone-maker refused to allow backdoor entry into the San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook’s smartphone.

The Islamic State-inspired terrorist’s iPhone 5C was eventually cracked. The hacking tool’s origin is still unknown.

Microsoft unveils Big Updates, VR hand controllers at Build 2017 developers conference

Big news for Microsoft fans! Windows 10 is getting another update, and that’s just one of the major announcements Microsoft made at its Build 2017 developers conference.

The three-day event is where Microsoft details the future of its products and services.

    NEWS FROM MICROSOFT’S BUILD 2017

ImageFile: Microsoft unveils Big Updates, VR hand controllers at Build 2017 developers conference

    Windows 10 Update

Microsoft announced at its Build 2017 event that the next major Windows 10 update will be called the Fall Creators Update. It’s expected to be out sometime in September 2017 and Windows 10 Mobile will also receive the update. Some new features to the OS will include the ability to resume sessions on multiple gadgets, a cloud-based clipboard and an overhaul of the Task View area.

    Linux available in Windows Store

Also making news at Build 2017 is the fact that OpenSUSE, Ubuntu and Fedora are coming to the Windows Store. Users can install them as apps on their gadget, allowing them to run Windows and Linux applications side-by-side without dual-booting. Linux OS’ Ubuntu is already available and the other two will be in the near future.

This move helps Microsoft deliver on its pledge to have greater acceptance of the open-source community. Microsoft signed onto the Linux Foundation last year.

    Windows Story Remix

Video editing is about to become easier with Microsoft’s introduction of a new application called Story Remix. The software is expected to be an improved version of Movie Maker, allowing users to create professional-grade videos without needing special video editing knowledge. Story Remix will let you combine videos, images and music into one cohesive clip.

    Windows Fluent Design System

The Fluent Design System for Windows 10 is being introduced. This was previously known as Project Neon and seems to be influenced by Google’s Material Design. Microsoft’s operating system will now include elements of transparency and animation that it previously lacked. The Fluent Design System is expected to look cleaner and fit better on the display than before. Some additional user interface touches will bring the desktop to life.

    iOS app testing in Windows

As you might imagine, competing against Apple is no easy task. And one of the downfalls many developers see with Windows is that they can’t test out iOS apps with the platform. To fix this, Microsoft is introducing the new Xamarin Live Player, which allows developers to run test versions of apps within Visual Studio.

    New feature for OneDrive

OneDrive is set to receive a major upgrade when the Fall Creators Update is released. Being called “Files On-Demand,” the tool will give users additional control options for cloud and local storage options. This feature will be perfect for anyone who needs access to their files and folders on the go since everything will be available even if you haven’t synced your device to your computer in a while.

  • Facebook acknowledges, fixes apps battery draining issue

ImageFile: Facebook acknowledges, fixes apps battery draining issueFacebook has acknowledged that it’s main and messenger apps drain battery unusually on both iOS and Android devices, and had said the issue has been fixed.

David Marcus, Head of Messenger at Facebook, replying to a Twitter user’s query claimed that the “issue was isolated and fixed server side,” adding that users experiencing battery drain issue can restart the respective apps and the issue is solved.

“If you restart Messenger the problem should be gone now,” Marcus said with a tweet.

Some of the users of the Facebook and Facebook Messenger apps on Twitter claimed that the Facebook app consumed over 1 percent battery every minute when it was in use. Users also lodged complaints that the Facebook Messenger app consumes battery juice abnormally.

One user, whose tweet is captured below, particularly tweeted @davidmarcus lodging his own complaint.

    https://twitter.com/alxpap/status/818852606114234368

While it is not clear whether the issue has been fixed or not but some Twitter users complaining about the battery drain issue did confirm that the restart fixed the issue.

One of the users shared screenshot from battery setting showing that Facebook and Messenger apps were not draining the smartphone battery.

If you are experiencing battery drain then you can restart the Messenger or Facebook apps to see if the issue has been fixed.

Facebook last month revamped its Messenger app’s design with more camera-focused and new features like 3D masks and text-based artwork suggestions. The company later also added the group video calls feature to the Messenger app.
