BAIL: IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu to know fate May 18, 26

Ruling on the bail application of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been fixed for May 18 and 26.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, made this known on Friday.

Recall that Justice Nyako had earlier on Friday struck out 8 out of 15 count criminal charges against the self-acclaimed leader of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The judge threw out the 8 counts on the grounds that the proof of evidence did not link him with the charges.

Justice Nyako freed Kanu from the 8 charges while delivering the ruling in a preliminary objection the Biafran leader raised against all the charges.

“I have read the counts and counts 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 have not disclosed any offence against the defendant.

“‘Counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 shows some allegations. The court shall proceed to try the defendant on those count, ” the Judge ruled.

Court dismisses 8 out of 15 counts charge against Nnamdi Kanu

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out eight of the 15 counts against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The 15 charges which bordered on terrorism were filed against Kanu by the Federal Government.

When the case resumed on Friday at the court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Justice Nyako struck out eight of the charges while delivering a ruling on the validity of the charges.

She held that in the instant preliminary objection application, counts six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, and 14 have not disclosed any offence by the defendant.

The judge, however, acknowledged that counts one, two, three, four, five, 13, and 15 showed some allegations against the IPOB leader, saying the trial of the defendant would proceed on those counts.

According to her, rendition for the purpose of criminal investigation is allowed and in the instant case, there is a bench warrant on the defendant, suffice to say he is a fugitive before the court.

On the issue of the proscription of IPOB, the judge held that the case was pending before the appeal court and as such, the order proscribing the organisation was subsisting until it was vacated.

IPOB are no criminals to be given amnesty- Kanu tells Anambra Governor

Kanunta Kanu, brother of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has told Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State that members of the group are no criminals to be given amnesty.

He reacted to the amnesty offered to the pro-Biafra group by Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State.

On Monday, Soludo promised to grant IPOB members and other Biafra agitators amnesty if they lay down their arms in the state.

Soludo had disclosed this shortly after a prayer session meant to end the controversial sit-at-home order originally imposed by IPOB.

Governor Soludo had said: “I have also offered Amnesty to all our brothers in the various forests around us. Give us your guns and trust us to help you forge a meaningful living.”

Reacting to the development, Kanu said IPOB’s militia arm, the Eastern Security Network, ESN, was set up to defend the Eastern region against some criminals.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Kanu insisted that IPOB is not a criminal group that should be given amnesty.

“IPOB led by #MaziNnamdiKanu formed #ESN to defend Biafraland against herdsmen terrorists. Upon the rendition of #MNK, IPOB called for Monday #SitAtHome, which it has ended. IPOB supports Gov Soludo’s efforts to end criminality in SE, but IPOB are no criminals to be given amnesty,” Kanu wrote.

Soludo urges Anambrarians to observe Monday as day of prayers

In a bid to counter the “sit-at-home” on Mondays in Anambra State, since the arrest and commencement of trial of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has urged Anambrarians to observe a one-day prayer session against the activities of the gunmen terrorising the state and the South-East region.

The governor said the prayer session would hold on Monday, April 4, 2022 in churches and other religious worship centres across the state.

He said the move became necessary so as to counter the “evil” effect of the Monday sit-at-home order.

He spoke on Saturday at a stakeholders’ peace meeting with security chiefs, traditional rulers and religious leaders, in Awka.

He said, “I enjoin you to pause and join in fellowship as we seek the face of God.It is expected that the conclusion of the prayer session shall mark the end of Sit At Home in Anambra State.”

IPOB has ended sit-at-home in South-East, says Anambra monarch.

Meanwhile, the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra has scrapped its Mondays’ sit-at-home directive in the South-East region, saying the development is to embrace peaceful negotiations organised by the Anambra State Government.

IPOB yielded to the appeal by the Anambra State government and traditional rulers to pave the way for peace since all Igbo stakeholders and religious leaders have declared their intention to find a lasting solution to insecurity and incessant sit-at-home in the region.

The decision was disclosed by the Chairman, Anambra Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, during a one-day peace building and security meeting held in Awka on Saturday.

Achebe, who is also the Obi of Onitsha, said the stakeholders had continually held meetings on the way forward on the impasse.

He said after its meeting on Friday, it was agreed that the call to release the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, would help in dousing the tension in the state.

He called on the governors of the South-East states to represent their people well and speak their minds at all times.

Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralised four gunmen of the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra/ Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) at Ihiala town in Anambra.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said troops received a distress call that the gunmen were out enforcing the illegally imposed sit-at-home order and were firing sporadically in and around a filling station in Ihiala town.

He said a fire-fight ensued between the dissidents and the gallant troops leading to the killing of their leader, one Ejike, and three others.

According to Nwachukwu, items recovered from the gunmen during the encounter include one motorcycle, two pump action double-barrel guns, 12 live cartridges and substances suspected to be cannabis, amongst others.

He, however, noted that one of the combat vehicles conveying troops was involved in an accident during the operation following a technical fault.

“One gallant officer and a soldier paid the supreme price in the accident, while two sustained injuries. The injured are currently responding to treatment at a military hospital.

“While we pray for the repose of the souls of deceased personnel, the general public is enjoined to continue to support the military and other security agencies through the provision of timely and accurate information,’’ he said.

Mbaka demands unconditional release of IPOB leader, Kanu

Fiery Catholic Priest and Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has demanded unconditional release of leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The cleric also advised the Federal Government to deploy same vigor with which Kanu was arrested deal with arrest insecurity, poverty, unemployment, activities of herdsmen, injustice and pragmatic nepotism.

Mbaka, who was reported to have made the call during a sermon on Sunday, at his adoration ground, said he made the request when some government agents whom he did not mention, came calling with some juicy offers to him which he turned down.

“Some persons came to me sometimes ago, that they have two slots for me. I told them I don’t need such offer because I have a slot that I need. They said I should mention what I need,” he began.

“My first request was that they should release Nnamdi Kanu because since you people arrested him, we have lost many lives, so of what use is his arrest if after he was arrested, kidnapping hasn’t stopped in the North, thus, arresting him doesn’t solve the problem.

“Has anybody seen Nnamdi Kanu kill anybody? He’s not a murderer. Have they caught him with guns, so why arrest him? Where were the nation’s security agencies when several students were kidnapped?”

Mbaka attributed the rise in criminality to activities of politicians that purchase arms for the thugs during electioneering period.
