IPOB accuses DSS of denying Kanu access to visitors

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of denying its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, access to visitors.

The stated further that Kanu is being confined to solitary.

This is contained in a press statement it made available to TheNewsGuru on Saturday.

The group, in the statement, expressed disappointment over the deliberate, permanent and insidious psychological torture against Kanu in the DSS custody.

It said it is sad as the action of the security agencies contravened International Human Rights laws and principles, as they have continued to deny Kanu access to visitors on Mondays and Thursdays, as instructed by the court.

The claimed that the DSS operatives have continued to flour existing court orders strictly given by Justice Binta Nyako concerning the welfare of Nnamdi Kanu.

“We the global movement and family of IPOB wish to reiterate our displeasure once again over the deliberate, permanent and insidious psychological torture being committed against our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in contravention of UNHRC and all other International Human Rights laws and principles in DSS confinement and torture facilities,” The statement reads.

“There abounds obvious and utter disregard by the DSS on the existing laws and thereby, consistently flouting the court ruling that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu deserves an interface with fellow human,” the statement continued.

It added, “Solitary confinement is torture under the United Nations Law and Justice Nyanko made a court order that Kanu should be visited twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays by his lawyers, family members and visitors of his choice.”

IPOB urged the International Community, Amnesty International, embassies, governments, International society and NGOs, including all reputable human rights organisations to monitor the gross violation of all known fundamental human rights of Kanu.

“We want to make it known to all and sundry that our leader is now being allowed to see his visitors for only 30 minutes in contravention of the competent court order that approved two hours per visit by his lawyers and family members.”

It reminded the DSS of their required obligations in handling all matters associated with Kanu so as to minimise unforeseen circumstantial consequences should anything go south with their Leader.

  • Analysis: Unending reign of terror in Nigeria: Where is next?

Analysis: Unending reign of terror in Nigeria: Where is next?

The other day, I was travelling to Delta State, and I almost died of panic. What happened? Two men walked into the waiting area of the Itakpe train station in army camouflage and immediately what came to mind was the Abuja-Kaduna train attack. Until I got to my destination in Agbarho, my mind was never at rest.

The Abuja-Kaduna train attack and unending reports of terror attacks have dug a hole in our hearts that will take many years to heal. This is not forgetting that many victims of the Abuja-Kaduna train attack are still languishing in their abductors’ den.

In 2022, the reign of terror in Nigeria assumed a whole different dimension. Insecurity in Nigeria has reached an alarming proportion, manifesting in the form of banditry, kidnapping, mass shootings and political violence, forcing many in the country to now live in the throes of fear as ransoms paid since this year have already exceeded N1 billion.

The country’s North-central and Northwest regions continue to experience communal militia activities, while the southeast has witnessed multiple clashes between the separatist Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and security outfits.

However, kidnapping, mass shootings and political violence have taken a more national dimension, with Borno, Kaduna, Niger, Plateau and Zamfara states ranking among the top most violent states in the country in 2022, according to a UN Report.

“From January to May 2022, the top five most violent states in Nigeria recorded 900 kidnap victims,” the report said quoting the Nextier Violent Conflict Database.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) investigation reveals that the January massacre by bandits in Zamfara, April 10 massacre in Plateau state, Owo massacre, Abuja- Kaduna train passengers abduction and Niger state gold mining site attack are among the deadliest cases of violence in Nigeria this year.

Despite the bill banning payment of ransom which was passed by the Nigerian Senate in April, kidnapping for ransom has grown significantly, with over N1 billion paid in ransom for abducted victims this year alone.

More than N800 million, which represents the highest amount paid as ransom in a single month this year was recorded in the month of July. Six Nigerians and one Chinese national abducted in April when bandits attacked train passengers allegedly paid N800 million to regain their freedom few days ago.

Similarly, the Medical Director of Dansadau General hospital in Zamfara State, Mansur Muhammed Dansadau and two other health workers who were abducted in Dansadau emirate were allegedly released after with the sum of N5 million.

In addition, four persons kidnapped along Irele–Oke Ako road in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, reportedly regained their freedom after a sum of N1 million naira was paid as ransom.

Two other kidnap victims – the 13-year-old daughter of a Reverend in Adamawa state Daniel Umaru and a former Secretary of Birnin-Gwari Local Government council Abubakar Muhammad Aliyu -were said to have paid undisclosed sums of money to their kidnappers.

Aliyu was later killed despite the payment of ransom, while Umaru’s daughter was released after two of his sons aged 19 and 23 years were killed and buried.

Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu, has said the payment of ransom by families of kidnapped victims is fueling terrorism in Nigeria.

Shehu also predicted that kidnapping for ransoms will continue until Nigerians stop making payments to kidnappers and allow the security agents to do their job.

“The first priority for most of them is to get their family back and they are willing to pay, and they’ve paid and these payments, whether anybody likes it or not, will continue to fuel terrorism.

We have to learn from experiences in other lands that when you pay, you are fueling terrorism, you are fueling the hijack and kidnapping of fellow citizens and it will go on and on until simply people call off the bluff and be prepared to allow law enforcement,” he said.

Often times, however, family members of kidnapped victims have said they do not trust security agents to help them secure their relatives. In many cases too, abductees whose family are unable to raise the requested ransoms remain in captivity for months and even years or are brutally killed.

Some Nigerians who spoke to TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) say the recent spate of violence in the country cause them to live in constant fear, as road travels have become increasingly unsafe and places of worship once held sacred and now desecrated by brazen gun-wielding men.

“Security has really deteriorated in the country and nowhere is safe now. You can’t go to your farm, travel or even worship in church, without having fear that something might happen at any moment,” a woman in Ogun state who does not want to be named told our reporter.

Another person who recently travelled by train from Itakpe to Agbarho said he was stricken with fear throughout the duration of the journey after sighting two men dressed in army camouflage uniforms around the waiting area of the train station.

“The other day, I was travelling to Delta State, and I almost died of panic. What happened? Two men walked into the waiting area of the Itakpe train station in army camouflage and immediately what came to mind was the Abuja-Kaduna train attack. Until I got to my destination in Agbarho, my mind was never at rest,” he said.

A retired Major General of the Nigerian Army Ibm Haruna, in a recent interview on AriseTV noted that insecurity in human endeavor was a lifelong challenge.

He, however, noted that the federal government must re-emphasis its appraisal of the architecture, organization, functionality and capacities of military agencies to perform, in the light of current security threats.

“They must train, they must be equipped and they must be relevant to the respond to situations,” Haruna said.

Similarly, the UN report noted that Nigeria’s security architecture was not designed for unconventional wars and there is need for a special force that will fill the gaps.

“The Nigerian government must isolate Nigeria’s numerous crisis types and work on tailored solutions for each. Northwest and northcentral banditry, northeast terrorism, violent southeast secession, Niger Delta militancy, and gang wars in south-south and southwest regions require tailored combative and non-combative responses.

“With evidence-based research, reliable data and intelligence, the Nigerian government can understand the push factors, enablers and ripple effects of violence in many troubled regions.

“Beyond these, proactive measures should be deployed to build peace and promote human capital development in states near the theatres of violence to prevent the spread of terror,” the report said.

The report further advised that there is need to include efforts to tackle the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALWs) and regulate border entry points, in order to manage gunmen violence in the country.

Why Biafra, Oduduwa agitators slow down – Ahmad Gumi

Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi has explained that the emergence of the Labour party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi has brought relative peace to the South-East, saying that the agitation and activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) are highly political.

Gumi made this statement via his Facebook page on Monday.

The cleric also took a swipe at those agitating for the Oduduwa nation, adding that their activities have slowed down following the emergence of a Yoruba person as the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

The statement reads partly, “The IPOB rhetoric and loud voice of Biafra agitations have muffled out with the emergence of Peter Obi as the Labor Party presidential candidate. To them, Igbos have a platform. It’s clear now that the entire IPOB outcry was a political gimmick to get power.

“The Oduduwa clamours have abated also since Tinubu has clinched the APC ticket never to resurface again until probably if he didn’t win the race.

“Northern Ultra conservatives too have no mouth to speak of marginalization or suppression of representation, the NNPP kwankwaso has satisfied that segment of the society. No more claims of candidate suppression and manipulation.”

According to him, the major problem of the country now is whether the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, “will conduct free, fair, and transparent elections” in 2023.

Ahmad Abubakar Gumi is an Islamic cleric, scholar and former military officer with the rank of captain in the Nigeria Defence Academy.

He is the current Mufti and mufassir at the Kaduna central mosque, Sultan Bello.

  • Stop linking us with Peter Obi – IPOB warns Kwankwaso

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has warned the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso to stop linking the group with the ambition of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

Kwankwaso recently said Obi is tainted by IPOB insurgency, adding that the vice-presidential slot is his only chance with voters from the north.

But in a statement today by its spokesman Emma Powerful, IPOB said that Obi is neither a member of IPOB nor supports its cause.

The statement read, “The global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, under the command and leadership of our great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wishes to advise the former Governor Kano State Rabiu Kwankwoso not to involve IPOB in the selection process they call election in Nigeria.

“The Nigerian politicians generally and Kwankwaso, in particular, should desist from linking IPOB with Peter Obi, his political ambition and campaign. Peter Obi is not an IPOB member and never supported our agitation for freedom at any time because he pursues a totally different goal from that of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

“We have no interest in the Nigerian morally decadent and fantastically corrupt political system and landscape.

“If Kwankwaso is threatened by Labour party and Peter Obi’s teeming support by the creative and talented but downtrodden, neglected, deceived, deprived, killed (#Endsars) Nigerian youths from even the North which your generation do not have any good intentions for, then he should go forward and settle his differences and stop linking IPOB to their problem.”

Police invade suspected IPOB/ESN hideout in Ebonyi, Kill 1

The Police Command in Ebonyi says it has raided the Indigenous People of Biafra/ Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) suspected camp, killed one, and arrested another.

The command’s Spokesman, SP Chris Anyanwu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abakiliki and made available to newsmen on Friday.

Anyanwu stated that the operation was carried out by the tactical team of the command, led by SP Jerry Maigorosom.

He stated that the camp was located at Oriuzor Village in Ezza North Local Government Area (LGA).

“At about 1435hrs of June 30, the tactical team of the command stormed the camp of suspected IPOB adherents at Oriuzor Village through a credible intelligence at the disposal of the command.

“On sighting the operatives, the hoodlums opened fire on them, leading to a gun duel.

“In the process, one of the hoodlums, identified as Elijah, was fatally wounded, while six others escaped with gunshot injuries.

“Fortunately, one of them, Chibundu Ali, 18, a native of Ezzama, Ezza East Development Centre was arrested and taken into custody.

He is being interrogated to unravel the identity of other fleeing suspects,” Anyanwu stated.

He added that the camp was ransacked and destroyed and some items recovered.

According to the statement, the items included one cut-to-size AK47 rifle with a few rounds of its live ammunition.

Others were locally-fabricated revolver pistol and expanded ammunition shell, amongst others.

It alleged that the items were stolen during an attack on a Divisional Police Station in Ezza South LGA.

It added that operatives attached to the Ohaozara Divisional Station also nabbed an armed robbery syndicate, which allegedly specialised in snatching of vehicles and motorcycles from Enugu and other neighboring states.

It stated that three suspects, including a lady and Ebubeagu personnel, were rounded up at Uburu in Ohaozara LGA, while negotiating the sale of one of the stolen motorcycles.

Uzodinma counters Matawalle, says we’ll not allow our citizens bear arms

Gov. Hope Uzodinma of Imo says the State Government will not allow its citizens to acquire weapons for self-protection, saying security agencies should be allowed to perform their duties.

The governor made his position known to State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in the State House, Abuja, on Tuesday.

Uzodinma, who was reacting to the recent call by Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara that his citizens should apply for guns for self-protection, said there was no need for such actions in Imo.

He said: “The situation in Imo is not the same with that in Zamfara State.

“However, on the Governor’s call for individuals to apply for licences, I think the authorities will only give licenses to a qualified and a legible candidate.

“But I don’t think there is a need for individuals or unauthorized people to carry arms.

“The situation in Imo State is currently being managed and we have seen relative peace for the past weeks in Imo and normal businesses have incrementally resumed in Imo State.

“I am not in Zamfara State to know the situation there but I don’t think that the security situation in Zamfara State or any other part of the country is beyond our security agencies.

“In Imo State, the security agencies have risen to the occasion, they are working in synergy and the situation has been controlled to a barest minimum.” he added.

The governor also used the opportunity to condemn recent attacks on Churches and the kidnapping of some clergymen.

“Regrettably, of recent, some Catholic Priests became victims of the banditry saga in Nigeria. It is an unfortunate incident and condemnable.

“It is not as if other people being killed are not important but we detest any form of violence or taking of lives.

“The Church condemns that and Islam is also against that, likewise our local traditions,’’ he said.

Uzodinma called on security agencies to do everything humanly possible to fish out those behind these ungodly and wicked acts for prosecution accordingly.

The governor revealed that he was in the Presidential Villa to update the president on security situation in Imo as well as thank him for allowing the State to host the 2022 Nigerian Army Day celebration, saying “this is a good omen for residents of the State’’.

According to Uzodinma, the hosting of the event will help address the security challenges the State is passing through.

“Basically I came to see the President to thank him for his gracious approval for Army Day celebrations to be held in Owerri, Imo State, South-East of the country.  That of course you know will help strengthen the measures that are already on ground to curtail the effects and excesses of banditry and insecurity in the region.

“So for me it is a good thing and for the people of Imo State, we are indeed very delighted over that.

“Basically that is why I am here and the President is also very comfortable with the visit.”

The governor reiterated his earlier call on bandits and trouble makers in the State to surrender or be dealt with.

“Only two days ago I called on the criminal gangs operating in any part of Imo State; the unknown gunmen, bandits who are hiding one way or the other in our forests and the bush to come out.

“I granted a 10-day period during which if they lay down their arms, we will grant them pardon. As of this morning, I am told that some people are already surrendering their arms and it is a good development,” he said.

Commenting on the general security of the South-East, the governor said all the Governors in the region had been working in synergy to address the problem, adding that the sit at home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was not effective in Imo State.

“We the Governors in the South-East are all working to ensure that security is guaranteed, for people to go about their businesses.

“The sit at home order is not operational in Imo State neither is it working in Owerri, the State capital.

“Really, it is still in operation in some parts of the South-East but the governors are also working in synergy to ensure that it becomes a thing of the past,” he assured.

  • Again, court refuses Nnamdi Kanu’s bail application

Again, court refuses Nnamdi Kanu’s bail application

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, dismissed a fresh bail application filed by the Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Justice Binta Nyako, in a ruling, said the application for bail was an abuse of the court process.

The judge said she was not satisfied with the reasons the IPOB leader gave for his failure to appear in court for the continuation of his trial.

The trial judge noted that from records of the court, Kanu, was represented by his lawyer on the day his bail was revoked, likewise his sureties.

“In fact, his sureties told the court that they did not know the whereabouts of the defendant and even applied to be discharged from the matter.

“Therefore, the defendant was not denied fair hearing,” she said.

Justices Nyako held that though a court could vacate a previous order when confronted with a cogent and verifiable reason, “in the instant case, I have not been given any, neither have I been given any reason to set aside the earlier order.

“The present application amounts to an abuse of court process for attempting to relitigate an issue already decided by the court.

“If the defendant is dissatisfactory, he has the Appeal Court to go to.

“This application is accordingly dismissed,” the judge ruled.

Nyako also adjourned the trial until Nov. 14 for the report of the Court of Appeal decision on the appeal filed by Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN. seeking the order of the court quashing the remaining seven-count charge levelled against his client.

Recall that on May 18, the court dismissed the bail request filed by Kanu.

Ruling on the bail application, Nyako, held that the issue of Kanu’s absence from court since 2017 must first be determined before his bail request can be heard.

  • IMO POLICE: Killers of Ahmed Gulak confess, point fingers at politicians

Police in Imo State have paraded members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN), who allegedly killed former Presidential aide of President Goodluck Jonathan, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, on May 30, 2021.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that Gulak was murdered on Ngor Okpala Airport Road, Owerri, the state capital.

Barde also claimed that Anosike was also involved in the burning of police stations in Aboh Mbaise, Ahiazu Mbaise, Ezinihitte Mbaise, Ihitte-Uboma and Obowo.

The police chief equally said the suspect participated in the attack on a truckload of onions at Enyiogwugwu Junction shortly after killing Gulak.

Interacting with newsmen, Anosike confessed that some politicians were behind some of their crimes in the state.

“Sometimes the politicians will come and meet our commander, Ebube Uche Madu aka Virus but our leader will drive us away each time they came to discuss with him,” he said.

Also paraded were three suspects, Ifeanyi Awaenyi, 28, Ahanotu Chimezie, 24, and Ahazie Chukwudi, 24, arrested in connection with the burning of Prof Obiozor’s residence on March 19.

The suspects, who were arrested in Lagos, were said to have taken part in the kidnap of one Chief Okoro Junior, and the killing of his police guard on April 28.

Barde said that the overseas-based philanthropist paid a N1million in ransom before the hoodlums freed him and ran to Lagos.

Meanwhile, an Iyaganku Family Court sitting in Ibadan, on Monday, ordered the remand of a 40-year-old man, Abideen Akinbola, in Agodi correctional facility for allegedly having carnal knowledge of his 13-year-old daughter.

Magistrate S.H. Adebisi, who did not take the defendant’s plea due to lack of jurisdiction, ordered that he be remanded pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).

He adjourned the matter till July 11 for mention.

  • IPOB: Buhari says Nnamdi Kanu must prove his innocence in court

President Muhammadu Buhari has ruled out any out of court settlement for detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

He says Kanu must use the courts to prove his innocence even as he used the opportunity to affirm his preparedness to leave office in May 2023.

He said Kanu, who is currently on trial, has been given every opportunity under the law to justify all the uncomplimentary things he said against Nigeria while he was in Britain.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said in a statement that Buhari stated this at a bilateral meeting with the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, on the margins of the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kigali, Rwanda.

The SA titled the statement ‘Another term for me? No! The first person who tried it didn’t end very well.’

The President said the detained separatist is being given every opportunity under the law “to justify all the uncomplimentary things he said against Nigeria while he was in Britain.

“He felt very safe in Britain and said awful things against Nigeria. We eventually got him when he stepped out of the United Kingdom, and we sent him to court. Let him defend all that he said there.”

Buhari further said considering Kanu’s jumping of bail earlier, the Federal Government may not consider granting him such a privilege anymore.

“His (Kanu’s) lawyers have access to him. Remember he jumped bail before, how are we sure he won’t do it again if he’s admitted to bail?”

On the keenness expressed by the Prime Minister to help Nigeria in the area of security, the President said helping to stabilise Libya could be an initial good step, as the fall of Muammar Gaddafi after 42 years in power unleashed his armed guards on countries in the Sahel, “and they are causing havoc everywhere, as the only thing they know how to do is to shoot guns.”

On the Boko Haram insurgency, Buhari said there is a serious effort to educate the people on the fact that only an unserious person could kill innocent people, “and say Allah Akbar (God is Great). God is justice. You can’t take innocent souls, and ascribe it to God. The education process is working and the people now understand Boko Haram as anti-God, and not about religion.”

On his part, the British PM, obviously not quite familiar with the maximum two-term limit, asked if Buhari would run for office again.

“Another term for me? No! The first person who tried it didn’t end very well,” Buhari said amidst general laughter.

The Prime Minister said he was delighted about the good news on trade between the two countries, adding that the UK was reducing tariffs on some goods going to Nigeria.
