  • BREAKING: IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu released from Kuje prison

The leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has left Kuje prison in Abuja after spending close to two years of detention by the Federal Government.

He was driven out of the detention facility by former transportation minister Osita Chidoka after perfecting his bail conditions.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that a Federal High Court in Abuja, had earlier this week after citing concerns about Kanu’s health, granted him bail though on stringent conditions.

TheNewsGuru.com had earlier reported that a Federal High Court judge, Justice Nyako had signed the bail papers for Kanu’s release.

TheNewsGuru.com gathers that Justice Nyako signed the papers on Friday afternoon, April 28, after all the conditions given to the IPOB leader for his bail was met.

Three sureties including Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, a Jewish Rabbi and Senator Enyinnaya Abaraibe met at the court to perfect Kanu’s bail condition. The sureties also unanimously agreed to ensure that the IPOB leader appears for trial at all times.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the senators (Ekweremadu and Abaraibe) had followed the process of perfecting Kanu’s bail from the onset.

Several security operatives from the military, prison and some on plain clothes were seen littered around the prison facility.

  • IPOB: Court to give judgment on review of witness protection April 25

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday reserved ruling on whether or not it will reverse its order on witness protection in the ongoing trial of Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu to April 25.

Justice Binta Nyako, on March 27, insisted that she would not review her judgment on the issue of protecting the identity of the witnesses as long they were security operatives.

“I will not vary my order on protection of security operatives; It is either they wear a mask or are behind a screen.

“Security operatives need to be protected not because of this case but because of the future, and so as long as the witnesses are security personnel, they will be taken behind a screen,” Nyako said.

But counsel to the defendants maintained that since some of the charges against the defendants had been struck out, there was need for the order to be reviewed to reflect the current charges.

At the resumed hearing on Thursday, the prosecuting counsel, Mr Shuaibu Labaran, told the court that the matter was slated for argument on the application to review the court’s decision on witness protection.

Counsel to Kanu, Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor told the court that he had filed an application asking the court to review its stand on protecting the identity of witnesses in the case.

Ejiofor said that part of the reason he filed the application was on the grounds that six out of the initial 11-count charge against the defendant were struck out.

He prayed the court to vacate the order it made allowing the prosecution witnesses to give evidence behind a shield and to instead order the witnesses to testify in an open court.

Mr E.I Eseme, counsel to the third defendant, Benjamin Madubugwu, in his argument, also prayed the court for the same relief, adding that his application was brought pursuant to Section 6(6) of the 1999 Constitution.

He urged the court to review the order it made on Dec. 13, 2016, to shield witnesses, set aside the order and direct that all witnesses should testify in public.

Eseme added that his client was not standing trial for any of the offences that required witness protection.

According to him, Section 36(4) of the 1999 Constitution provides that it is mandatory for proceedings in all criminal trials to be public.

He noted that there was no counter- affidavit from the prosecution, adding that it could only mean that the facts were not contradicted and so they were not opposing the application.

Mr Chukwuma Ozougwu, counsel to the fourth defendant, David Nwawuisi, also towed the same line of argument and urged the court to grant the application in favour of his client.

Labaran, in his reply, prayed the court to dismiss the three applications on the grounds that they were frivolous and a deliberate attempt to delay the prosecution of the case.

He told the court that the claim by the defence counsel that since he did not file a counter affidavit, the court should assume that he was in support of the application should be discountenanced.

According to him, if the defendants have a problem with the ruling of the court that witnesses should be protected, they should appeal the decision.

He added that moreover, it was only journalists and the general public that would not see the witnesses but only hear them as all the defendants, the lawyers and the judge would see the witnesses.

He said the order was granted based on the discretionary powers given to the judge by Section 232 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

Justice Nyako adjourned the matter until April 25 to rule on both the application to review the witness protection order and bail.

  • IPOB: A delusion taken too far

IPOB: A delusion taken too far

    By: Charles Ibekwe

The puerile announcement by the Indigenous People of Biafra that it will boycott the Special Board of Inquiry set up by the Nigerian Army to investigate allegations of right abuses is both laughable and saddening at the same time.

It is laughable because it exposed the comical side of the fraud that has been presented as a struggle for self determination by a narrow group that has exploited the silence of the greater number of Igbo people as acquiescence.

It is saddening because it confirms that the characters behind IPOB have become delusional to the point of believing their own lies.

Their lies are such that at the height of the US Presidential Elections they stopped short of labelling the Republican Candidate, Donald J Trump an Igbo man.

That period saw them tell lies that stood logic on its head and should have been the red flag to see psychiatric help for members of this group.

Their claims at that time included bunkum like Trump promising them the actualization of a defunct Republic. Trump’s to do list allegedly included freeing the remanded IPOB gang leader, Nnamdi Kanu even though he is standing trial for grievous offences.

The outcome of the election worsened the mass delusion of IPOB members who behaved as if one of the world’s most enduring democracy runs on whims. Yet this delusion revealed a sinister dimension to the extent they will go to propagate lies in pursuit of a failed agenda.

We are not talking about some off the cuff inaccuracies here but something more profound. They went to the pains of photoshopping misleading texts unto pictures of President Trump holding up declarations he just signed – the texts of these frauds are always to the effect that the US was demanding Biafra independence.

They went further to clone or mimic responsible news organisations to be able to pass off such frauds as the real deal. The only name for this sick act is called ‘fake news’. It is bad. It is perverted and emanates only from those with criminal intents.
It was however not the first time that these frauds were deploying fake news in furtherance of their doomed project.

Fake news had been deployed on a commercial scale to lie about the nature of the face-off their radicalised wing had with the military; it had been deployed to announce casualties from such encounters only that they run into problems showing the body counts for their claims, which again forces them to deploy more fake news about abductions and military seizing corpses of members who are actually alive or never existed.

Possibly as indicated in their statement, issued by IPOB spokespersons, Dr. Ikenna Chinaka and Iyom Grace Ukpai, announcing the boycott, these fake news items become defacto research material for Amnesty International that consequently trumpet it as its findings in reports that IPOB in turn hinges its infantile claim upon.

It hovers somewhere between incest and masturbation for these groups to contrive falsehood on this scale and with attention for details in a way that strongly suggests it is not happening for the first time.

Allegations of extrajudicial killings, torture and other claims of human rights abuses against the Army flourished on the strength of the fake news. One would ordinarily expect that the decision of the authorities in setting up the Special Board of Inquiry would be explored to surface these claims of right violation if there is substance to them.

But the reverse is the case. Apparently because the IPOB militants know that they have no evidence to back up their many claims the next reflexive step is for them to announce a boycott of the inquiry.

The sad and comical aspect of that statement is that they went to a great pain to cite the Nigerian Constitution, the same one they have vowed never to recognise. They further advertised their befuddlement by citing cases decided by the British courts, same country they accuse of making them to be part of a zoo.

The impression created is that of a group of people caught in a mind loop and are unable to decide with any degree of certainty whether they are going or coming.

One is therefore hard pressed to understand how a bunch of addled indolent refuse to recognize a set of law – since the constitution of Nigeria connotes its indivisibility, and the same time want to be treated by the same instrument.

The intention to boycott the inquiry was let out of the bag with their admission that it is meant to delegitimize the panel by claiming, in the future, that they never appear before it.

Yet, here is an IPOB for whom the Special military board has already made concessions by refusing to name it as an accused entity owing to the crimes it has committed in the south east against Igbo interests.

A consensus among right thinking analysts is that many persons in Igboland would petition the board of inquiry to bring the atrocities committed in furtherance of IPOB’s interests to light.
These crimes against humanity include denial of means of livelihood in the course of the several economic blockades that the group usually impose – it has another one scheduled for May 30th this year.

Other things it would be accused of before the panel are forced disappearance of persons opposed to its ideologies, murder – including killing of security operatives, extortion, radicalization of youths, gun running and a barge load of infractions that should see the entire members and leadership of IPOB taking a trip to the Hague.

If IPOB has facts and evidence of abuse and extra judicial execution by the Nigerian Army it should then be bold to step forward and present same since the inquiry is in the full public glare with the media reporting proceedings. Its presentation before the panel could be the precursor to a larger investigation but that is only if what it would present would not be another staple of fake news similar to the fabled Donald Trump’s endorsement of IPOB’s.

It turned out Trump detests fake news and its purveyors and would no doubt have placed this dangerous group on his backlist by now, a reality that was not undone by the infantile solidarity march that was a cover for launching attacks against security personnel in Nigeria.

There is a last minute face saving window for these recalcitrant elements by way of the decision of the South-East Governor’s forum to intervene and appeal for a soft landing for them.

The decision is no doubt informed by the apparent hurt that IPOB’s insurrection is causing the economy of the region. Sadly, this well intentioned intervention was again hijacked by characters that have been addicted to fake news to the extent that they keened about how south-east governors warn federal government over Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader standing trial for treason.

This behaviour highlights the fact that IPOB members have no interest in political solution and they are allergic to peaceful approach to issues – there is no incentive for them to pursue political solutions since they have never bothered to position themselves to win council ward so they are not primed to win offices they can use to politically sway decisions in favour of their ill conceived quest.

The disdain they have for constituted authority is thus mirrored in the rudeness with which they treat political leaders from their region, which makes the disdain they treat the federal government and its institutions with negligible. One must first respect one’s kinsmen before extending the product of that upbringing to others.

This piece would not be complete without urging the Special Board of Inquiry not to be fazed by tantrums from IPOB as it is a known trait of losers. There are other parties that have indicated willingness to appear before the panel and the boycott by IPOB would not in anyway invalidate its outcome as this is a solution finding process and not a popularity contest.

Let the board follow best practice in extending invitation to all and sundry by adequately publicizing same and the world can then judge who the abuser is.

Ibekwe writes from Enugu State, Nigeria.

  • IPOB: Again, Court adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s trial

An Abuja Federal High Court has again adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, till March 1.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the matter which was scheduled for hearing today was adjourned again at the instance of the court to the new date.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that Nnamdi Kanu is currently standing trial before the Justice Binta Nyako-led court on an 11 –count charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony and publication of defamatory materials.

Kanu is facing the charges alongside three others, namely: Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.

Justice Nyako recently took over the trial of Kanu following the withdrawal of the former trial judge, Justice John Tsoho of the same court over allegation of bias leveled against him by the defence team of the pro-Biafra agitator.

IPOB rally illegal, held without permit – Police

    …says no life was lost

Following the public outburst over treatment melted out to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB during the solidarity rally for President Donald Trump on Friday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Police Command has said it got no written or verbal message from the group therefore describing the rally as illegal.

The state Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmed Magaji, disclosed this while speaking with journalists on Saturday.

Magaji, who spoke on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, Francis Odesanya, maintained that although no life was lost, 65 persons were arrested during the protest.

It is indeed saddening to note that before embarking on the illegal protest march, there was no official communication to the command, which in itself is reprehensible, condemnable and unfortunate.

The police, as an agency of government, have the statutory responsibility to protect life and property at any time, which was what we practically and professionally did yesterday (Friday) to forestall what would have been a total carnage in the state.

However, it should be noted that men of the command deployed for the operation were professional and used minimum force in containing the protesters. Note that no casualty was recorded, no death was recorded.

About 65 of them were arrested at different points within the metropolis, being suspected members of IPOB. Items recovered from them include some flags bearing the inscription of IPOB and other incriminating items.

The suspects arrested have made useful statements to the police and investigation is ongoing. Further developments will be communicated in due course,” Magaji said.

Recall that the group had accused the police of disrupting their solidarity rally for Trump saying eleven of their members were killed and several injured and arrested.

  • IPOB didn’t obtain permit, rally illegal — Police

The Rivers State Police Command on Saturday said it got no written or verbal message from the Indigenous People of Biafra before the group embarked on a solidarity rally for President Donald Trump on Friday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The state Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmed Magaji, disclosed this while speaking with journalists.

He described the IPOB rally as illegal, adding that the group’s refusal to inform the command about their activity was reprehensible, unfortunate and condemnable.

Magaji, who spoke on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, Francis Odesanya, maintained that although no life was lost, 65 persons were arrested during the protest.

“It is indeed saddening to note that before embarking on the illegal protest march, there was no official communication to the command, which in itself is reprehensible, condemnable and unfortunate.

  • Over 200 of our members missing after Trump solidarity rally– IPOB

Over 200 of our members missing after Trump solidarity rally– IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said that over 200 of its members were still missing after its solidarity rally in honour of the United States, US, President, Donald Trump in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

However, the police has since refuted the claim, saying only one death was recorded in the incident.

In a statement, the spokesman of the pro-Biafra group, Emma Powerful maintained that the report by the police was untrue.

The statement reads: “We the Indigenous People of IPOB and its leadership worldwide, wish to use this medium to correct the erroneous impression that we carried out a protest.

“What IPOB did on 20th of January 2017 in Igweocha Port Harcourt, Rivers State was a peaceful rally in solidarity with the newly elected President of the United States of America Mr. Donald J Trump, who took oath of office in Washington D.C.

“This solidarity rally in support of President Donald J Trump was announced by IPOB Worldwide on the 16th day of January 2017 by our media team and the contents of that announcement was unambiguous and could not conceivably be misunderstood or misrepresented to mean protest as has been erroneously reported by certain sections of the media.

“The event was scheduled and announced as a rally and not a protest. We would also like to place it on record that IPOB worldwide has confirmed that more than 11 Biafrans died as a result of the unprovoked, brutal and unwarranted military assault on our members during this peaceful rally.

“Many more are in hospitals receiving treatment with over 200 abducted presumed dead. It is incumbent on the civilized world to prevail on the regime of President Buhari to release the dead bodies and those they abducted; and to refrain from abducting those receiving treatment in hospitals.

“IPOB Family Units, whose members are missing, are advised to forward their names to our secretariat.”

He explained that IPOB lawyers were working tirelessly to locate and release those taken to Bori camp at Rumuola, the State CID, Port Harcourt and SOS Police Station at Miniokoro off Old Aba Road.

  • Tension as IPOB’s solidarity rally for Trump turns violent, 11 feared dead

The solidarity rally embarked upon today by the indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in support of US president-elect, Donald Trump (who will be sworn-in as president few hours from now) in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State has turned violent.

    According

Media and Publicity ‎secretary of IPOB, Mr. Emma Powerful, in a short message to the newsmen alleged that no fewer than 11 members of the pro-Biafra group have been shot dead by security operatives.

“They have attacked our people; 11 have been confirmed dead, many others have bullet wounds”, he claimed in the statement.

He alleged that the attack was carried out by the police, the army and the Department of State Services, DSS.

The IPOB spokesman had earlier in a statement he issued on Friday morning, raised the alarm over what he called, ‎”the barbaric plans by the Nigeria security agencies against the recent TRUMP solidarity rally in Igweocha Port-Harcourt River state today, 20th January 2017.”

“The Nigeria security agencies, especially the DSS have perfected plans to share some weapons/guns to unscrupulous elements in the society to join the peaceful solidarity rally for TRUMP today in order to create problem within the crowd.

“IPOB is a peaceful organization that have no guns or weapons but Nigeria government and her security agencies especially the DSS have shared destructive objects to kill people in Igweocha River state today.

“‎We are calling on international community, men and women of good conscience around the world to note this because IPOB is peaceful and if anything happens, Nigeria government led by Muhammadu Buhari and the security agencies, especially the DSS should be held responsible,” he had claimed.

  • [Just in] Court resumes trial of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu

The trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has resumed on Tuesday at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Armed security personnel which comprises of mobile police officers and operatives of the Department of State Security service mounted tight security at the court premises on Tuesday.

Press men were initially barred from entering the court building by security personnel until the intervention of Kanu’s lawyer.

Kanu, and three others, David Nwawuisi, Benjamin Madubugwu and Chidiebere Onwudiwe, were accused of treasonable felony and are being tried by the Federal government.

It would be recalled that Kanu’s trial was suspended on December 13 after he and other defendants angrily challenged the court’s decision to allow the use of “protected” witnesses.

The judge, Binta Nyako, had ruled in December that witnesses would be allowed some degree of protection.

“The counsels and the defendants will see the witnesses. The witnesses will have special entrances to and outside the court,” the judge said.

Justice Nyako also said the court would allow the witnesses to be shielded with screen-guards.

The ruling was enforced today, with screen-guards shielding the judge, defendant and witnesses from the rest of the court.

  • IPOB lamblasts Ngige for saying Buhari loves Ndigbo

IPOB lamblasts Ngige for saying Buhari loves Ndigbo

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has slammed minister of labour, Chris Ngige over his recent claims that the South-East geopolitical zone has not being expunged from the scheme of things under the current administration.

The group accused Ngige of running his mouth just to please his pay master in Abuja.

Ngige had while speaking during the annual convention and 2016 graduation ceremony of Skill Acquisition Students of Bina Foundation, Enugu, said contrary to the statement purportedly made by Ohanaeze that Ndigbo were being excluded, the antecedents of Buhari showed that he loved Ndigbo.

But IPOB, while reacting via a statement by its spokesman, Emmanuel Powerful, said people like Chris Ngige and other political jobbers feeding off the crumbs from the master’s table should be ashamed of themselves and know that the day of reckoning was fast approaching.

He said, “Anybody or group of persons against the new found courage of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in supporting the quest for freedom for all must examine his or her conscience before offering an opinion.

“This is the time to embolden the few good men left in Igboland not to pander to the interest of political vultures who have brought nothing tangible to the emancipation discourse championed by our leader mazi Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB members worldwide.

“Our goal remains the attainment of absolute freedom in deed not just in mere words, for all oppressed peoples of Biafra and beyond.

“We also commend the Ohaneze leadership for demonstrating the leadership charisma for once through out their period in office as executive in Igboland.

“Again, as long as the Ohaneze Ndi Igbo and other groups and social cultural organizations in Biafraland remains on the side of the truth without fear or favour IPOB and its leadership will continue to support every of their initiatives aimed at liberating, the emancipation or promotion of our people.

“We hope that other social cultural organizations and elders in Biafraland of Ijaw, Ishekiri, Anang, Ibibio, Kalabari, Opobo, Igala, Idoma, Ogoni, Urohobo, Igbanke etc will come out and toll the line with the recent statements made by Ohaneze Ndi Igbo towards the realization of God’s nation Biafra and the liberation of our people.

“Until this sacred and divine mission is accomplished, IPOB worldwide will never rest’ so also our ordained leader and prophet of our time Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
