    Islamic new year:Sultan announces date for first day of Muharram 1446AH

    The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Sunday, July 7 as the first day of Muharram 1446AH.

    Abubakar made the declaration in a statement issued on Friday night in Sokoto by Sambo Junaidu, the Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs to the Sultanate Council.

    The declaration of the moon will usher in the Islamic New Year.

    The first month, Muharram, is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Holy Quran.

    The other months are the seventh month, Rajab, the 11th month, Dhu al-Qi’dah and the 12th month, Dhu al-Hijjah.

    “The Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in conjunction with the National Moon Sighting Committee did not receive any report from various Moon Sighting Committees across the Country confirming the sighting of the New Moon of Muharram 1446 AH, on Friday, 5th July, 2024 which was the 29th day of Zulhijja 1445 AH. Therefore, Saturday, 6th July, 2024 will be 30th Zulhijja1445 AH.

    Islamic new year: Buhari canvasses prayers for Nigeria

    Immediate past President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has called for prayers for Nigeria as Muslims mark the Islamic New Year.

    Buhari’s message was contained in a statement Wednesday by Malam Garba Shehu, a former special assistant to the president.

    The statement reads: “On the occasion of the Islamic New Year 1445, former President Muhammadu Buhari has called upon Muslims across the nation and all over the world to follow the noble teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions while stressing the importance of self-retrospection in the full awareness that we are all migrants in this world.

    “We called for prayers for the nation and adherence of all citizens to our collective good and avoidance of actions and utterances unbecoming a united nation.”

    Islamic New Year: Sultan tells Muslims to watch out for new moon

    The President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on all Muslim faithful in the country to watch out for the new moon of Muharram 1445 After Hijrah, (AH) of the Islamic calendar on Monday, July 17, 2023, which is equivalent to the 29th of Dhul Hijja, 1444 AH.

    This  call was made known by the  Secretary of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council Sokoto, Yahaya Muhammad Boyi, said when the crescent moon is sighted, it should be reported to the nearest district or village heads for onward communication to the sultan of Sokoto.

    “The sighting of the new moon of Muharram will Mark the end of the Islamic lunar calendar 1444, and the beginning of the New year 1445 After Hijrah”, the statement noted.

    Al-Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar, is said to be crucial in the lives of the faithful, as they were instructed by the Prophet of Islam to observe voluntary fasting on the 9th and 10th days of the month known as Tashua and Ashurah.

    One of the significances of the day is to celebrate the day that Prophet Mose was saved by God from the Pharaoh of Egypt, thereby crossing the Red Sea with his people.

    Tambuwal declares Monday work-free to mark Islamic New Year

    The Sokoto State Government has declared Monday, Aug. 1 as a work-free day to mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year.

    Gov. Aminu Tambuwal made the declaration in a statement he personally signed on Friday in Sokoto.

    “After due consultation with the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, on the citing of the new moon which heralds the new Islamic month and year today, I hereby declare Monday, Aug. 1, 2022, as a work-free day.

    “Consequently, I enjoin our brethren to use the occasion as a moment of solemn reflection, charity and prayer for peace, prosperity and good governance.

    He urged residents to bear in mind the divine lessons of the month as one of the four sacred months of the year when warfare is forbidden.

    He urged the people to eschew bitterness, rancour, restiveness and wanton violence.
