The Nigerian Army on Saturday confirmed the killing of a Senior Officer, Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkusuin in battle with Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

According to a release by the army spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, which reads thus:

In the fierce encounter which is still raging as at the time of filing this report, troops supported by the Air Component of OPHK have destroyed five A – Jet, two A-29, two Dragon combat vehicles and nine Gun Trucks.

Sadly, a gallant senior officer Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkusu and three soldiers paid the supreme sacrifice in a very rare display of gallantry as they reinforced a counteroffensive against the terrorists, and successfully defended the location. The family of the senior officer and soldiers have been contacted.

The Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya deeply commiserates with the families and relations of the fallen heroes. He has also directed that the troops continue in the ferocious counteroffensive and hot pursuit to eliminate the remnant of the fleeing terrorists.

ISWAP appoints new leader weeks after Al-Barnawi‘s death

Forty five-year-old Sani Shuwaram has been appointed leader (Wali) by members of the Shura (Judicial) Council of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

He was installed in Lake Chad.

He was sworn in by Alkali (Judge) Bukar Arge in Kurnawa, in a brief ceremony held in a remote camp in Lake Chad, the de-facto headquarters of ISWAP in Abadam Local Government Area in Borno.

Top officials of ISIS graced the installation. Shuwaram has by his appointment become the fifth officially recognised head of the West Africa Unit.

Before his appointment, Mamman Nur, Abba-Gana, Abu-Dawud, a.k.a. Aba Ibrahim, Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, immediate past leader killed by the military, had held the position at different times.

Shuwaram by his appointment takes over from the commander who was appointed in an acting capacity since the demise of Malam Bako.

Bako succeeded Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, the late leader and son of Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf.

In his capacity as the new leader, he is to manage the group in Sambisa, Timbuktu, Tumbumma and others under the supervision of ISIS leader, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi.

Quoting a military source, it was said that the visiting ISIS envoys also discussed internal rivalries, discriminatory action and financial challenges in ISWAP.

Others were clashes between JAS factions led by Bakoura and Bukuma as well as refusal of some Boko Haram fighters to join those that have pledged allegiance to ISWAP since ‘Abubakar Shekaus death.

“Apart from looking at issues of management of resources and welfare of widows and foot-soldiers, ISIS is planning to provide logistic support to ISWAP for missions in Baga, Marte and Malam Fatori,” the officer said.

Setback for ISWAP as troops kill Malam Bako, successor to Al-Barnawi

The National Security Adviser to the President, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd) has announced the killing of Malam Bako, the successor of Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, the leader of the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP).

Monguno revealed this when he addressed newsmen on the outcome of the meeting of security chiefs, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor had on Oct. 14 confirmed the death of Al Barnawi.

Irabor said: “I can authoritatively confirm to you that Abu Musab is dead. He is dead and remains dead.’’

However, Monguno disclosed that Abu Musab’s successor, Malam Bako was also neutralized along with a prominent member of the ISWAP.

“The fact again is that the armed forces, the land forces have done an excellent job because in the span of one month we have been able to take out the leadership of the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) – that is Abu Musab Al-barnawi.

“Two days ago, the man who succeeded him, one Malam Bako, one of the prominent leaders of the Shura Council of the Islamic State of West African Province, was also taken out.

“They are also contending with leadership crisis. You know these things are also accompanied with inherent issues of trust, conflicts, mutual suspicion and other things.

“So, the operations being conducted by the armed forces in the Northern parts of the country put a lot of pressure on the Islamic State of West African Province, Boko Haram and also the tangential group known as Islamic State in the Greatest Sahara.’’

The National Security Adviser to the President, Maj. Gen. Babagana Mongonu (rtd) has announced the killing of Malam Bako, the successor of Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, the leader of the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP).

Mongonu revealed this when he addressed State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting of security chiefs, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday.

Recall that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor had on Oct. 14 confirmed the dead of Abu Musab.

Irabor said: “I can authoritatively confirm to you that Abu Musab is dead. He is dead and remains dead.’’

However, Mongonu disclosed that Abu Musab’s successor, Malam Bako was also neutralized along with a prominent member of the ISWAP.

He said: “The fact again is that the armed forces, the land forces have done an excellent job because in the span of one month we have been able to take out the leadership of the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) – that is Abu Musab Al-barnawi.

“So, the operations being conducted by the armed forces in the Northern parts of the country put a lot of pressure on the Islamic State of West African Province, Boko Haram and also the tangential group known as Islamic State in the Greatest Sahara.’’

On the forthcoming Nov. 6 Anambra gubernatorial election, the NSA said President Buhari enjoined the security agencies to stamp their feet of authority and ensure the success of the election.

Monguno said the president was reacting to the heightened security challenges in Anambra, orchestrated by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“The President has directed that under no circumstances will anything be allowed to stop the elections from taking place successfully. The people have a right to vote and select their leader.

“No group or individual will be allowed to stimulate anarchy and chaos, leading to murderous activities.

“The President has made it very clear that the Armed Forces and all law enforcement agencies must make sure that the elections take place even if it means overwhelming the entire environment with the presence of security personnel”, he said.

He added: “There are so many implications for elections to be sabotaged by non-state actors.

“In the first place, we are in a democracy, secondly it is important to note that if these non-state actors should succeed in destroying the potentials for orderly elections, then it is natural that other parts of the country would also want to copy this same situation.’’

ISWAP kills 7 soldiers, injures others in Borno ambush

The Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have killed seven soldiers and four Civilian JTF in an ambush along the Marte/Dikwa axis of Borno State.

Confirming the incident yesterday in Maiduguri, the Sector leader of Civilian JTF, Modu Ba’ana, said the insurgents planted improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Thursday, along Maiduguri/Dikwa, while the military convoy was travelling from Marte to Maiduguri.

He disclosed that the convoy was escorting soldiers that were granted leave pass from Marte to catch a flight to their respective destinations in the country, and that the ISWAP ambush occurred at Ala village, located between Dikwa and Marte border towns.

He said: “One of the military vehicles stepped on the IEDs planted by the terrorists. Some extremists hidden around the spot also opened fire on the other convoys, leading to the death of seven soldiers and four local security vigilantes, who were travelling in the convoy.”

Ba’ana noted that the ambush is part of ISWAP’s strategies to consolidate its hold on Sambisa Forest after Boko Haram’s withdrawal in July.

He said the ISWAP fighters were led by Aboubacar Oucacha Fiya, who oversees the Marte areas in Lake Chad Basin. Thursday coordinated attacks coincided with the repel of ISWAP terrorists at military bases in Malam Fatori and Babangida communities of Borno and Yobe states.

  • Nigerian Army clears air on enlisting repentant Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists into service

Nigerian Army clears air on enlisting repentant Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists into service

The Nigerian Army has said that it had not and would not enlist former or repentant Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists into the service.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, made the clarification in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said an online video circulating in the social media by one Young Elder and produced by Anthony Jay attempted to relate the collapse of the Afghan military to the ongoing surrender by the Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in Nigeria.

According to him, the Young Elder, in a comic way, tried to express worries about the surrendered terrorists.

“While it is understood that the situation in Afghanistan calls for concerns by any right thinking person or organisation, the manner in which the comic Young Elder presented it shows his lack of basic knowledge on the subject he hurriedly delved into.

“The amateurish production conjured some unfounded and baseless claims that only exist in the figment of their imagination, claiming that surrendered terrorists were going to be absorbed into the Nigerian army.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the NA does not have any repentant terrorist joining its ranks and does not have any plan for that.

“There are teaming able-bodied Nigerians that are willing to join the NA to genuinely help in the fight against terrorism and other violent crimes,” he said.

The Army spokesperson said the Nigerian Army was not desperate for prospective recruits to stoop so low to engage the services of former terrorists.

He explained that it was not recommended to absorb former fighters into the services of a regular military as a general rule.

According to him, the campaign of falsehood embarked upon by some individuals who do not wish the nation well cannot distract its personnel from their resolve to bring an end to the violent crimes in the country.

He said the army under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, would continue to operate within the dictates of the law.

“Surrendered terrorists will be received, processed and passed to the appropriate government agencies that are saddled with the responsibility of handling them.

“While we recommend that matters related to security be left with those who have the requisite expertise and experience.

“We wish to remind comic characters like Young Elder to focus on contributing towards nation building and not engaging in campaign of falsehood,” he said.

91 Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters, families surrender

Ninety-one Boko Haram/Islamic States West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists and their families have surrendered to the Nigerian Army in the North East.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said the troops of 202 Battalion took custody of eight insurgents and their families, comprising 10 adult females and 22 children, who surrendered at Ruwaza village in Bama Local Government Area of Borno.

He said the troops of Forward Operational Base (FOB) operating along BoCobs-Bama road also arrested 20 terrorists and their families, who surrendered to troops at Nbewa village also in Bama Local Government Area.

According to him, the surrendered families of the insurgents comprised 15 adult females and 26 children.

“The suspects all surrendered to the troops, during clearance operations in the areas on July 29, following ongoing intense clearance operations by troops in the general areas.

“The children among the surrendering suspects have been vaccinated with polio vaccines, while the adult and female suspects, who have been documented and screened are currently undergoing preliminary investigations,” he said.

Nwachukwu also disclosed that troops of 73 Battalion, in conjunction with a combined team of Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and Hunters, intercepted a terrorists’ logistics supplier during a fighting patrol along Molai-Damboa road.

He said the team swiftly mobilised and stormed the location, where they arrested the suspect, while he was perfecting plans to deliver logistics to the insurgents in the forest.

He said the items recovered from the suspect include a vehicle, four jerry cans of 30 litres of PMS, one 4-litre gallon of engine oil, one motorcycle pump, one oil treatment and one torchlight.

According to him, other items recovered are one mosquito net, two praying mats, two blankets, four spanners, 10 packets of 1.5v battery and three dozens of diamond rubber solutions.

“Others are five packets of candies, five packets of seasoning and measures of other foodstuffs,” he said.

Abubakar Shekau: Untold story of how ISWAP recruited over 300 Libya-trained women, teenagers to ‘bring down’ Boko Haram’s strongman

More information have emerged on how Boko Haram strongman, Abubakar Shekau was attacked and killed by 300 fighters loyal to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

According to reports, the fighters trained in Libya and other countries joined their colleagues in a long battle that led to the final fall of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau on Wednesday.

According to a report by Daily Trust, a fierce battle that lasted several days between the two factions led to the death of dozens of vicious commanders and hundreds of foot soldiers from both sides, with multiple sources saying Shekau has killed himself or fatally injured himself to the extent that he might not survive.

It was gathered that most of the fighters that fought for the defeat of Shekau on Wednesday were aged between 12 and 30.

“They are actually children of some ISWAP members killed over time,” a security source said.

According to him, “Others are youths sourced during raids on multiple islands around the Lake Chad. The ISWAP carefully selected the youths. It was therefore much easier for recruitment as some of the youths willingly joined the group and others were forcefully conscripted.

“Some of them were born during the wartime and others were very young when their parents joined the group around 2002. After their parents died because of illness or confrontation with Nigerian troops, the children naturally took over and when the group split into two in 2016, those that moved on their own or forcefully taken to the shores of Lake Chad under the umbrella of ISWAP had an upper hand in terms of training because they were taken to Libya for training in guerrilla warfare and other purposes.

“Others were sent to Syria and Somalia… They were taken to many countries abroad for training. However, those that came back especially between March and April this year took an active part in confronting Shekau in the last few days. They launched a serious offensive alongside other top commanders and fighters already on ground and they succeeded in taking over,” he said.

Another credible source said some of the 300 youths were trained as “medical doctors, paramedics, engineers, IT specialists, bomb specialists and mechanics.”

He added that among them were women “who serve as nurses or cooks while others have gun-handling skills, meaning they can partake in combat operations.”

He said after their return from abroad, they were camped at a village called Shuwaram in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

  • U.S. sends message to ISWAP over $7m bounty for killing Shekau

U.S. sends message to ISWAP over $7m bounty for killing Shekau

The United States of America (USA) has said it will not pay the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) a promised $7 million bounty for killing Abubakar Shekau.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the United States Department Rewards for Justice Program made this known via Twitter on Friday.

“News reports today indicate that Boko Haram terrorist Abubakar Shekau blew himself up in a confrontation with ISIS affiliates.

“Hey, ISIS guys. To clarify: no – you are not eligible for the reward for information on his identity or location. That’s not how the program works,” the US Department Rewards for Justice Program tweeted.

TNG reports Shekau is the leader of Jama’atu Ahl as-Sunnah il-Da’awati wal-Jihad, more commonly known as Boko Haram.

Boko Haram, which means “Western education is forbidden,” is a Nigeria-based terrorist organization that seeks to overthrow the current Nigerian government and replace it with a regime based on Islamic law.

The group has existed in various forms since the late 1990s. There are reported communications, training, and weapons links between Boko Haram, al-Qaida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), al-Shabaab, and al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which may strengthen Boko Haram’s capacity to conduct terrorist attacks.

Shekau was previously the group’s second-in-command. In July 2010, Shekau publicly claimed leadership of Boko Haram and threatened to attack Western interests in Nigeria.

Later that month, Shekau issued a second statement expressing solidarity with al-Qaida and threatening the United States. Under Shekau’s leadership, Boko Haram’s operational capabilities grew.

The group set off its first vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (IED) in June 2011, and has increasingly utilized IEDs in attacks against soft targets.

Boko Haram’s August 26, 2011 vehicle-bomb attack on the United Nations headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria marked the group’s first lethal operation against Western interests. At least 23 people were killed, and 80 more were injured, in the attack. A purported Boko Haram spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack and promised future targeting of U.S. and Nigerian government interests.

On May 1, 2012, less than one week after the group bombed a Nigerian newspaper building in Abuja, Boko Haram issued a video statement threatening more attacks on local and international news outlets, including the Voice of America and Sahara Reporters, a New York-based media service.

Under Shekau’s leadership Boko Haram has continually targeted young children. On April 14, 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped close to 300 girls from their school in northern Nigeria. In a video message released three weeks later, Shekau claimed responsibility for the kidnappings, calling the girls slaves and threatening to sell them in the market.

On June 21, 2012, the U.S. Department of State designated Shekau a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224, and placed a $7 million bounty on him.

However, an intelligence report emerged on Thursday that the Boko Haram leader reportedly died following alleged invasion of the terror group’s stronghold in the Sambisa forest area by a column of ISWAP fighters.

ISWAP, which had broken away from the Shekau-led Boko Haram faction in 2016 after pledging allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS), raided the group’s hideout using multiple gun trucks.

Shekau’s enclave was tracked down by ISWAP using its forces based in the Timbuktu Triangle. His fighters were killed in the process, followed by a long gunfire exchange between the invading group and Shekau’s bodyguards, according to intelligence reports.

It was gathered that after his bodyguards were subdued, Shekau surrendered and engaged in an hours-long meeting with the ISWAP fighters.

During the parley, he was asked to voluntarily relinquish power and order his fighters in other areas to declare bai’a (allegiance) to ISWAP’s authority. They had expected Shekau to issue a statement.

Sources within the insurgency, however, said that Shekau who secretly had a suicide vest on eventually blew himself up alongside everyone present during the negotiations.

The identities of the people within ISWAP’s leadership who lost their lives to the explosion remain unclear.

TNG reports Shekau had been the leader of Boko Haram since 2009 following the death of the group’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf. He had been rumoured to have been killed at least four times between July 2009 and August 2015.

In August 2016, the Nigerian Air Force claimed he had been “fatally wounded” by military bombardments, but the terror group released a video only a month later showing he was alive and in good health.

The Defence Headquarters could not confirm the killing of Shekau, Nigeria’s most wanted terrorist as at the time of filing this report.

Acting Director Defence Media Operations, Brigadier General Benard Onyeuko, said the military cannot confirm the development yet.

The DHQ had while defending repeated claims of killing of Shekau by troops, explained that ‘Shekau’ is a mere title bestowed on the leader of the group and not a name of an individual.

Meanwhile, Nigerian military has placed all Borno State Commands of the Nigerian Army and Air Force on alert, over possible movement of dislodged insurgents.

JUST IN: ISWAP gunmen kill 15 at baptism

Unidentified gunmen, suspected to be connected with Al Qaeda or ISWAP killed 15 people who were gathered for a baptism at a village.

The tragic attack happened in northern Burkina Faso on Tuesday night, the government said on Wednesday.

The attack took place in Adjarara, about 7 km (4 miles) from the town of Tin-Akoff in Oudalan province, very close to the border with Mali, according to a statement from the governor of Burkina Faso’s Sahel region.

It was unclear who carried out the attack, but Islamist groups control large swathes of the area.

The governor, Colonel-Major Salfo Kabore, offered his condolences to the families and urged people to report any suspect movements to the army.

Attacks by armed groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State in the West African Sahel have been rising sharply since the start of the year.

The attacks have been rampant in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, with civilians bearing the brunt.

At least one person was killed and two gravely wounded in a separate incident on Wednesday when a military vehicle hit a roadside bomb.

The incident happened in Tialbonga, in eastern Burkina Faso, according to a security source who said the death toll was provisional.
