Couple wed in coronavirus face masks at ceremony with no guests in Italy

In the face of the troubling cases of coronavirus and deaths from the killer virus in Italy, two lovebirds still went ahead to tie the knot in a low-key ceremony.

According to The Sun UK, Diego Fernandes, 46, and Deni Salgado, 30, went ahead with their nuptials in Naples, on Friday, in a country ravaged by the coronavirus crisis.

In one of the pictures, the couple can be seen wearing face masks as they share a kiss at the altar while celebrating their special day.

It was gathered that only witnesses attended the ceremony in the wake of the country’s strict lockdown.

Italy had also overtook China as the country to register most deaths from the killer virus after the total death toll in the country rose to 4,825 – the highest in the world.

The country’s authorities had also ordered a lock down of the entire northern region which has a population of 16 million people to check the spread of the virus.

In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, there have been calls for social distancing as the primary defense for combating the killer virus.

According to the US’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says social distancing is the “remaining out of congregate settings, avoiding mass gatherings, and maintaining distance (approximately 6 feet or 2 meters) from others when possible.”

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi disclosed this on Thursday at a news conference to give update on the pandemic.

He said the index case, who had been receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Hospital had tested negative to the disease.

Abayomi said it was good news for Lagos and Nigeria for the index case to test negative.

He said he would not be allowed to go yet until a confirmatory test had been carried out within 48 hours, saying that if he tested negative the second time, he would be discharged.

The Italian was tested positive for Coronavirus on Thursday 27, February, 2020.

The patient, entered Nigeria on the 25th of February from Milan, Italy for a brief business visit.

According to Abayomi, “He fell ill on the 26th February and was transferred to Lagos State Biosecurity Facilities for isolation and testing. The patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.”

  • Presidency attacks Fani-Kayode for demanding identity of Italian who brought Coronavirus to Nigeria

President Buhari’s Personal Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, has blasted Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, for demanding the identity of the Italian who brought coronavirus to Nigeria.

Fani-Kayode who is a staunch critic of President Buhari’s administration had on Wednesday accused the authorities of hiding the truth about the coronavirus patient who tested positive in Lagos on the 27th of February 2020.

Fani Kayode had said: “The Italian that brought coronavirus into Nigeria has not been named & his picture has not been released to the public.

“The driver that was alleged to have driven him to Abeokuta said he did not do so. The passengers on the plane in which he flew into Nigeria cannot be traced.

“The claim that he was an employee of a company & that he went to their office in Lagos after leaving the airport has proved to be false. Finally, the Lagos state Comm. of Health went to see the Italian without wearing any protective gear.

“Something doesn’t add up in this saga.”

Reacting to the statement made by Fani-Kayode, Lauretta Onochie, who shared a video of a US hospital protecting the identity of a coronavirus patient, described the former minister as Nigeria’s foremost drug addict.

She said: “Privacy is the right of every human. Well or unwell.

“Here are respectful people shielding the identity of a patient.

“Nigeria is keeping the identity of the Italian receiving treatment for COVID-19 infection. But Femi Fani Kayode, Nigeria’s foremost drug addict, wants his identity.”

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, said the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and port health services of the Federal Ministry of Health were monitoring the temperature and possible appearance of symptoms of 55 of the 148 passengers on the manifest of the said flight.

He said, however, that none of the passengers under watch had exhibited any symptom.

Ehanire said: “Up till today, there have been no symptoms. We are also trying to look out for others and we hope every passenger on that Turkish Airline who have not yet been contacted will contact the NCDC on 0800970001 – 10. They should also continue to self-isolate.

“Multi-sectoral emergency operation centre led by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) continues to coordinate national response activities.

“Also, the national rapid response teams are supporting Lagos and Ogun states with the contact-tracing and other activities.”

Earlier in the week, the minister had expressed worries that some people gave telephone numbers that did not work or were switched off.

He said some others, particularly new arrivals in Nigeria who were yet to register with any phone company, might not have access to telephone.

The minister added: “We are following up with 61 contacts of the index case; 21 in Lagos and 40 in Ogun State.

“The contacts are under supervised self-isolation and states have provided them with temperature monitoring tools. All of them have remained symptom-free so far.

“Between 7th of February and 5th of March, 2020, a total of 21 suspected cases were reported across four states in Nigeria, namely – Lagos, Ogun, FCT, and Kano. The index case we have in Lagos is stable, symptoms are mild and is being treated at the infectious disease hospital in Yaba, Lagos.

“There is still only one confirmed case of COVID-19 in Nigeria, which is the index case, and no death.

FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN: Nigeria unable to trace 158 passengers aboard plane with Coronavirus infested Italian

The Lagos State Government said it was yet to trace the 158 passengers aboard the Turkish airliner that flew in the Italian who is Nigeria’s index case of the virus.

It restated that while some of the passengers had travelled to other states in Nigeria, others had gone back to Europe.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated this during a meeting with chairmen of Local Government Councils, Local Council Development Areas, Community Development Associations and All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwarts on how to effectively prevent the spread of the virus.

He added that some of the passengers who were contacted on the telephone, gave “false information.”

“There were 25 people who came in contact with him at the factory(in Ogun State); there were two drivers and an ambulance driver. We have quarantined those identified so far at our medical facilities and some of them at home.

“We are calling them twice a day to check if they are okay. If they develop symptoms, we will bring them to our bio-security facility for test.

“We have identified all of these people except some of the people, on the aircraft who have either gone back to Europe or travelled to other states.

“Some of them gave us false information on the telephone. We are still trying to find the remaining passengers on that aircraft every day. Our contact list is over 100 persons and this number is increasing every day.”

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said two more foreign nationals suspected to have been infected in Asia tested negative.

He explained that 34 Nigerians the Italian had contact with in Lagos and Ogun States had been reached with some quarantined and others in close observation.

The governor said:”There were 159 passengers in the aircraft and six people that came in contact with him at the airport.

The governor said a series of medical examinations at the State’s bio-security facility conducted on the two foreign patients that were brought from Ogun State over the weekend, did not show any sign of COVID-19 infection.

Sanwo-Olu told the gathering that the Italian was improving.

He said: “We have called for this meeting as part of proactive measures we are taking to prevent the spread of Coronavirus to our local communities. It is no more news that we are managing a case in Lagos, but the situation does not call for panic.

“We don’t want to record any loss of life to this virus. My administration places premium value on human life, which is the reason we have upgraded facilities at our bio-security centre and Infectious Disease Hospital.

“But, we believe we will achieve better results in this effort if people at the grassroots are properly sensitised on how to protect their communities from the virus and other contagious diseases.

“Government is doing its best to stop coronavirus, but Government cannot do it alone. It requires collective responsible of everybody living in Lagos to stop the virus

He said the government would maintain open line of communication with the public on the progress being made in containing the virus.

The Management of Lafarge Plc has revealed that the Italian who brought Coronavirus to Nigeria first slept at the Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos before coming to the company in Ogun State.

The 44-year-old Italian was diagnosed of the deadly disease on Thursday, a situation that has sent panic across the nation.

Industrial Director, Lafarge Plc, Segun Soyoye, said the Italian came to Lafarge facilities at Ewekoro to inspect some installations of machines bought from a Swedish firm.

He spoke at the Lafarge facility during an on-the-spot-assessment by the Ogun State Government, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) teams at the weekend.

Soyoye added that the Italian did not go behind Lafarge guest house at Ishofin Estate before he was evacuated having developed abnormal temperatures that suggested he had been infected with Covid-19.

“The Italian came for a business visit. He was in Lagos on Monday and slept at Airport Hotel, Ikeja. Our driver took him there, and when we observed abnormal temperatures and symptoms, we quickly instituted an Emergency Response Team which is led by the Company’s CEO; we have to find a way of analysing and identifying not only the Italian but also the other contacts,” he said in a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to him, “the contacts are now 39 and we have quarantined them, the house and clinic as well as the vehicles. We don’t take chances that is why they are put there.

“They will be there for 14 days. We will continue to observe them, we have their database, showing their biodata and other information.

The doctor is here and what he is doing is to check them on a regular basis. So far everybody is stable, they are not symptomatic, we are providing everything for them over there.

“The other thing that I have not said is that the clinic that was used for the infected person is closed, disinfected and we moved everybody out.

How Italian businessman brought first Coronavirus case to Nigeria

The first case of the deadly Coronavirus has been confirmed in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, the State Government confirmed early Friday morning.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, in a statement said Lagos State has reported the patient to the Federal Ministry of Health.

“He fell ill on the 26th February and was transferred to Lagos State Biosecurity Facilities for isolation and testing. COVID-19 infection was confirmed by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, part of the Laboratory Network of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. Abayomi said government was working to identify all the contacts of the patient, since he arrived in Nigeria.

“Please, be reminded that most people who become infected may experience only a mild illness and recover easily, but it can be more severe in others, particularly the elderly”, he said.

The case, which was confirmed on the 27th of February 2020, is the first case to be reported in Nigeria since the outbreak in China in late December 2019. And it underscored the eerie warning by the WHO Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus that all countries need to prepare to combat the deadly coronavirus.

With new infections reported around the world now surpassing those in mainland China, Ghebreyesus said even rich nations should prepare.

“No country should assume it won’t get cases, that would be a fatal mistake, quite literally,” Tedros said, pointing to Italy, where 17 people have died in Europe’s worst outbreak.
