Euro 2020: Italy becomes first team to reach last 16

In-form Italy became the first team to reach the knockout stage of the European Championship with another impressive Group A showing in victory over Switzerland.

Roberto Mancini’s side thumped Turkey on the opening day of the tournament and made it back-to-back 3-0 wins courtesy of another sprightly performance in Rome.

Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli scored twice, first by finishing off a move he started by tapping in from Domenico Berardi’s darting run and cutback.

Italy’s passing and pressing was far superior to their opponents and Locatelli’s fizzing strike from the edge of the area underlined their control of the contest.

Lazio striker Ciro Immobile’s long-range drive, which squirmed under goalkeeper Yann Sommer, completed a comprehensive victory late on.

Switzerland barely threatened an Italian backline that has now gone 10 games without conceding in all competitions, a run approaching 1,000 minutes.

Italy coach Roberto Mancini says Paris Saint-Germain is a good move for Gigio Donnarumma.

Donnarumma is leaving AC Milan for Paris.

“I don’t know what will happen, as I haven’t talked to hm about it,” said Italy boss Mancini in his press conference today.

“Donnarumma is a great goalkeeper. If he were to go to PSG, it would be a good choice, as this is a big club.”

Italy thrash Turkey in Euro 2020 opening match

Euro 2020 opened in spectacular fashion as Italy got their campaign off to an impressive start in front of their own fans with a comfortable victory against Turkey.

There were shades of Italia 90 before kick-off when Italian opera tenor Andrea Bocelli, against backdrop of a breathtaking firework display, graced the opening ceremony with a moving performance of Nessun Dorma.

And when the rescheduled tournament finally began in earnest, an own goal by Merih Demiral and strikes by Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne settled the one-sided Group A match – the first of 51 fixtures to be played in 11 European cities over the next month.

The Azzurri dominated the first half but could not find the net, Giorgio Chiellini going closest with a header from a corner which brought a fine save from Ugurcan Cakir.

They broke the deadlock when Demiral turned the ball past his own keeper trying to cut out Domenico Berardi’s second-half cross before Lazio’s Immobile, playing on his home ground, pounced after Leonardo Spinazzola’s shot was blocked by the keeper.

Italy wrapped up a satisfying win though Insigne’s powerful finish, after he was teed up by the impressive Immobile.

Before kick-off, the match ball was brought on to the pitch by a remote controlled car.

Tottenham winger says goodbye ahead of Italy move

Tottenham winger Eric Lamela is ready to say his goodbyes at the club.

The 29-year-old has been with the London club since 2013, when he signed from Roma as a Gareth Bale replacement.

Lamela has been dogged by injury issues throughout his time at the club, and has not made 20 league starts in a season since 2015-2016.

And according to Area Napoli, he is ready to leave Spurs this summer and wants a return to Italy.

Napoli may be the club where Lamela wants to play, but the report claims the Naples club may focus their attention on homegrown players instead.

Roma and AC Milan have also been linked with the Argentine.

Italy, Napoli always an option for Chelsea midfielder – Agent

Jorginho’s agent says the Chelsea midfielder is enjoying a ‘special moment’ under Thomas Tuchel.

The Italy international is a key figure in Tuchel’s midfield.

But his agent, Joao Santos, says Jorginho would be open to a return to Italy if the situation changed at Stamford Bridge.

“There are many rumours about that because he did so well at Napoli,” Santos told Naples-based station Radio Marte.

“It’s a special moment for him. He is an important player for Chelsea now. However, he is an Italy international, and we are thinking about a return to Serie A if he leaves the Blues.

“If Napoli will make an offer, we’ll evaluate it. He had a great time in Naples, and he has many friends over there.”

COVID-19: Italy enters a new phase of lockdown

Italian government on Monday effected a new phase of lockdown for more than 40 million people due to rise in Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

Apart for Sardinia, where hardly any restrictions applied, all Italian regions are subject to the medium-strict rules of an orange zone under Italy’s colour-coded system, or the strictest lockdown rules of a red zone.

In addition to the economically strong Lombardy with its metropolis of Milan and Lazio with its capital Rome, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna also fall into the red zone.

People there are only supposed to leave their homes in urgent cases, such as for shopping, emergencies or work.

Sports in the fresh air are only allowed alone. Pupils have to switch back to lessons via the internet.

“Distance lessons have become unbearable for me, especially after I was allowed to have some face-to-face lessons again,” a pupil from Rome told said.

In view of the Easter holidays, the government under former European Central Bank (ECB) Chief Mario Draghi already decided on Friday that the red zone would apply to the entire country between April 3 and 5.

Most recently, the coronavirus pandemic had worsened in the country of 60 million people, with new infections rising daily and incidence values increasing on a weekly basis.

So far, more than 102,000 people have died as a result of an infection with the coronavirus and authorities have recorded more than 3.223 million cases.

The rules now in force were decided “according to the principle of the greatest possible caution,” the Health Ministry expert, Franco Locatelli said in an interview with Monday’s edition of the newspaper Corriere della Sera.

The aim, he said, was to be in a better epidemiological situation after Easter. Health comes first, even if a socio-economic crisis prevails, Locatelli explained further.

Italy court orders Facebook to pay $5 million in damages for copying app

A Milan-based appeals court on Tuesday ordered Facebook to pay 3.83 million Euros ($4.70 million) in damages to an Italian software development company for copying an app, a court document seen by Reuters showed.

The judges said the U.S. group copied their ‘Nearby’ feature from Italy’s Business Competence’s app ‘Faround’, which allows users to identify shops, clubs, restaurants in their surrounding area through geolocalisation.

The court’s decision upheld a 2019 ruling but increased the amount of damages that Facebook will have to pay, initially set at 350,000 Euros.

“We have received the court’s decision and are examining it carefully,” a Facebook spokesman told Reuters.

  • Sinner wins maiden ATP title at Sofia Open

Sinner wins maiden ATP title at Sofia Open

Italy’s Jannik Sinner became the youngest first-time winner on the ATP Tour in 12 years on Saturday after edging Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-4 3-6 7-6(3) to claim the Sofia Open.

Sinner, contesting his first ATP Tour final, served notice of his intentions early on when he forced Pospisil to save three break-points in his first service game.

He then went on to break the Canadian’s serve in the third game.

That was enough for the 19-year-old to claim the opening set and he looked set for victory when he broke Pospisil again early in the second.

But the Canadian fought back with two quick service breaks of his own to force a decider.

The match stayed on serve in the third set and headed to a tiebreak.

There, it was Sinner who kept his cool and sealed the victory when Pospisil sent a backhand beyond the baseline.

The Italian is the youngest winner on the men’s tour since Japan’s Kei Nishikori won the Delray Beach Open at the age of 18 in 2008.

Sinner is the sixth first-time winner on the tour this year, joining Ugo Humbert, Casper Ruud, Thiago Seyboth Wild, Miomir Kecmanovic and John Millman.

  • More than 5m pupils in class as schools re-open

Some 5.6 million pupils were back in class on Monday as schools re-opened in most of Italy after more than six months of a Coronavirus-related shutdown.

“Today is an important day for the entire national community,” Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said, adding that the government was “not hiding the difficulties.”

Some regions have postponed the re-opening date to next week, while German-speaking South Tyrol did it earlier on Sept. 7.

In total, there are more than 8 million school children in Italy.

Re-opening schools is proving to be a major logistical and organisational challenge, amid fears it may lead to a new spike in contagion numbers.

“There will be an increase in new positive cases, but a limited one; we should not be scared,” Prof. Franco Locatelli, a top public health expert, said.

Schools have had to re-arrange classrooms to make sure pupils sit at least 1 metre apart.

If this is not possible, or when moving around, they have to wear face masks.

“I don’t think the kids will have too many problems.

“Of course, it won’t be like the other years, but let’s hope they’ll still be able to concentrate,” a mother in Rome told the Agenzia Vista news site.

To facilitate social distancing, the government has ordered 2.4 million single-seat school desks, but their delivery is late and is not expected to be completed until late October.

There are also widespread problems with shortages of teachers, support staff and classroom space, prompting harsh criticism of the government from the opposition.
