2024 AFCON Qualifiers: Ghana, Angola, Tanzania secure qualification, Uganda miss out

The Black Stars of Ghana managed to secure qualifacation to next year’s tournament in Ivory Coast after a dramatic comeback win over Central African Republic.

The Black Stars were down 1-0 in half time before scoring two goals in the second half to earn them qualification to the tournamnet.

Ghana, Angola and Tanzania became the 16th, 17th and 18th teams to secure a place at the tournament in Ivory Coast next year.

Ghana, four-time AFCON champs, will be appearing at the tournament for a 10th successive time and a 24th overall, while the Palancas Negras return to the continental championship for the first time since 2019 and a ninth overall.

However, Uganda’s win against Niger on Thursday night was not enough to send them to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Cranes, despite securing a 2-0 win at Grand Stade Marrakech in Morocco, didn’t make the cut for next year’s continental showpiece in Ivory Coast.

Tanzania on the other hand in Algiers defended resiliently to earn a point that helped them move to eight points and thus qualify for AFCON.

Just In: Ex- President of Cote’dIvoire, Bedie is dead

Former Ivory Coast President Henri Konan Bedie, part of an old guard of politicians who dominated politics in the West African nation for a generation, has died, aged 89, a close relative told Reuters on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.

The Ex-President Bedie served as president from 1993 until his ouster in 1999 and later ran a losing race against his long-time political rival President Alassane Ouattara in elections in 2020 when he was 86 years old.

It’s not clear how former President Bedie died and his spokesman could not be reached for comment. He was long
remembered – and in some parts reviled – for his role in promoting the issue of “Ivoirite”, or Ivorian identity.

The issue fuelled tensions between those who considered themselves natives in the south and east, and the many foreign workers from neighbouring countries long settled in the country’s north.

Why Championship side, Wigan Athletic fired Kolo Toure

Championship side, Wigan Athletic has fired former Ivory Coast international, Arsenal and Manchester City star, Kolo Toure few months after being employed.

Toure was only appointed head coach of Wigan in November, 2022 on a three-year deal after under going a coach course in the United Kingdom.

The Ivorian was tasked with steering Wigan out of the relegation zone, but instead, things have only gotten worse, with the club now bottom of the Championship and four points from safety.

Wigan got just two points from seven league games under Toure and were eliminated from the FA Cup after a third-round replay against Luton Town.

“Firstly, I would like to thank Kolo [Toure], along with Kevin and Ashvir, for their efforts during their time at the Football Club,” a statement from Malachy Brannigan, Chief Executive of Wigan, on Thursday read.

“Unfortunately, the results on the field have not been as we would have liked and as tough a decision as this was, the Board felt it necessary to give us the best possible chance of remaining a Championship club next season.

“Therefore, we will now work swiftly and effectively to ensure the right person is appointed as the next permanent manager of Wigan Athletic, with the immediate objective of remaining in the Second Tier for next season.”

  • Nigeria, Cameroon to join Ivory-Ghana cocoa initiative

Nigeria, Cameroon to join Ivory-Ghana cocoa initiative

Nigeria and Cameroon have requested to join the Cote d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (CIGCI), a joint body spearheading the interests of the two countries in the cocoa trade.

This was revealed on Wednesday by the head of the initiative, Alex Assanvo.

The initiative was set up after a 2018 declaration by Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world’s first and second-largest cocoa producers, on willingness to define a common sustainable cocoa strategy that would raise prices paid to farmers.

It was created with the view of including other African countries.

Representatives from Cameroon and Nigeria were invited to a CIGCI meeting in Abidjan to begin the process of joining the initiative, Assanvo told reporters after the meeting.

“With Cameroon and Nigeria we are going to represent around two-thirds of global cocoa production,” Yves Brahima Kone, chief executive of the Ivory Coast Cocoa and Coffee Council, said at the meeting.

“This will allow us to have more leeway in discussions with the industry on imposing a decent price for our cocoa farmers.”

Nigeria is the fourth largest cocoa producer worldwide, according to World Atlas, with major cocoa-producing states in Ondo, Cross River, Ogun, Akwa Ibom, Ekiti, Delta, Osun and Oyo.

Cocoa production is important to the economy of Nigeria. Cocoa is the leading agricultural export of the country and Nigeria is currently the world’s fourth largest producer of cocoa, after Ivory Coast, Indonesia and Ghana, and the third largest exporter, after Ivory Coast and Ghana.

The crop was a major foreign exchange earner for Nigeria in the 1950s and 1960s and in 1970 the country was the second largest producer in the world but following investments in the oil sector in the 1970s and 1980s, Nigeria’s share of world output declined.

In 2010, cocoa production accounted for only 0.3% of agricultural GDP.

Average cocoa beans production in Nigeria between 2000 and 2010 was 389,272 tonnes per year rising from 170,000 tonnes produced in 1999.

  • Eric Bailly recounts moments with Jose Mourinho

Eric Bailly recounts moments with Jose Mourinho

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has claimed that his best time at the club came under Jose Mourinho.

The Ivory Coast international was signed by Mourinho during his first summer in charge of United.

The all-action defender became first choice alongside Marcos Rojo that season, but his injury proneness meant he spent far too long on the treatment table to build on his early United successes.

Speaking with L’Equipe, the defender, now on-loan at Marseille, said: “The first contact [with Mourinho] was on the phone. I was in Abidjan when he called me, I see a Portuguese number, I don’t really know, I answer, and I hear: ‘Hello, it’s José Mourinho.’

“There, I had no words. We talked a bit, he knew that there were interests from several clubs in England, and for him the best way to convince me was to call me personally.

“He told me that he had followed me for years, that he had seen me grow at Espanyol and then at Villarreal.”

He continued: “The first two seasons in Manchester were the best, they are good memories. Then there was the accumulation of injuries, and less playing time.

“Mourinho is a very demanding person, who has a lot of character. He’s called the Special One and he’s really special. He brought me a lot in my progress.”

“The greatest happiness, it is to find the grounds, to know that I will play.”
