Ivory Coast elects 78-year-old president for 3rd term

President Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire has been re-elected for a third term with more than 94.27 per cent of votes, the country’s electoral commission said on Tuesday.

Ouattara’s key rivals, Konan Bedie and Pascal Affi N’Guessan received 1.66 per cent and 0.99 per cent of votes respectively, the commission said.

Both opposition politicians say Ouattara’s third-term bid is unconstitutional and had called on their supporters to boycott the Oct. 31 election.

The fourth candidate, Konan Kouadio Bertin, who counted as an outsider, received 1.99 per cent of the vote.

The commission placed voter turnout at 53.9 per cent, with the results still having to be confirmed by the Constitutional Council.

The West African cocoa producer’s election has been feared to cause unrest and threaten political stability, with more than 20 people killed in violence in the run-up to the poll, according to Human Rights Watch.

Ouattara, who has been in power since 2011, initially promised he would step down after his second term.

The 78-year-old, however, announced his candidacy in August, a month after the sudden death of his anointed successor, former Prime Minister Amadou Coulibaly.

Cote d’Ivoire’s constitution allows for only two five-year presidential terms, but Ouattara’s Rally of the Republicans party argues a 2016 constitutional amendment has reset the clock.

Amadou Gon Coulibaly, Ivory Coast’s prime minister and the ruling party’s candidate for the next presidential election, has died at the age of 61.

He reportedly died after attending a cabinet meeting. Officials said Coulibaly was unwell during a ministerial meeting at the presidential palace in Abidjan and was rushed to a hospital where he passed away.

He said; “Fellow compatriots, Ivory Coast is mourning. It is with deep pain that I announce to you that Prime Minister Amadou Gon Coulibaly has left us,” Ouattara said in a statement read on national television by the presidency’s secretary-general.

“I salute the memory of a statesman, a man of great loyalty, dedication and love for his homeland,” added Ouattara.

    Ivory-Coast records first Coronavirus case

Ivory Coast has announced the first confirmed case of the Coronavirus in the country.

The announcement was made in a statement by the country’s Health Minister, Eugene Aka Aouele.

According to the statement released, a 45-year-old man who recently returned after travelling to Italy developed fever, cough and cold; the major symptoms of infection.

”The patient’s clinical condition is stable and reassuring. The people who have been in contact with the patient have been identified and are being monitored”.

Aouele appealed to the Ivorian population to remain calm, saying that measures are in place for ”an optimal management of the case” and to curtail the spread of the virus.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that asides China, Italy is battling the worst outbreak of the illness.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has so far confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in eleven African countries, Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Togo, Tunisia, Congo, and Burkina Faso.

Egypt has 60 cases, the highest in Africa. One patient had died from the virus, now declared a pandemic by World Health Organisation.

Coronavirus: Trouble for Africa as one tests positive in Ivory Coast

Health authorities in Ivory Coast are investigating a suspected case of Wuhan coronavirus in a female student who arrived from China, officials have said.

The student, whom authorities have not named, is the first person to be tested for the virus on the continent, CNN reports.

The virus has killed at least 80 people in the mainland Chinese city of Wuhan.

The 34-year-old student traveled from Beijing to the Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport in Abidjan on Saturday and was coughing, sneezing and experienced difficulty breathing, Ivory Coast’s Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene said in statement.

The student was moved to a safe location upon arrival at the airport and is currently under medical observation, the ministry said.

Authorities believe it is highly likely a case of pneumonia and not coronavirus, but the final diagnosis will be made after the analysis of the results of the test, the ministry said.

Michel Yao, WHO Africa emergency response program manager, said the agency had advised health ministers in the region to activate standard flu screening at airports for passengers coming from mainland China.

More than 2700 coronavirus cases have been confirmed, prompting countries around the world, including Nigeria to shore up surveillance and screening at airports, especially for travelers arriving from Wuhan in China where the outbreak began in December.

Aviation authorities in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, said airlines operating in its airspace should update crew members on how to handle sick passengers on board their aircrafts.

Pilots must report such cases to health officials on landing while also encouraging sick travelers to seek help before leaving the airport, Nigeria’s Federal Airport Agency said in a statement.

Kenya, whose national carrier Kenya Airways, operates nonstop flights from Nairobi capital to Guangzhou, has also begun screening passengers arriving from China at its airport, according to local media.

Coronavirus are a large group of viruses that are common among animals, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In rare cases, they are what scientists call zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted from animals to humans. The viruses can make people sick, usually with a mild to moderate upper respiratory tract illness, similar to a common cold.

Symptoms include a runny nose, cough, sore throat, and infected persons may have headaches and maybe a fever, which can last for a couple of days.

2019 AFCON: Morocco beat Ivory Coast to advance

Morocco reached the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after beating Ivory Coast 1-0 on Friday to serve notice that they are one of the sides to beat at the tournament in Egypt.

Youssef En-Nesyri’s 23rd-minute goal ensured a second win in Group D for Morocco, who move onto six points and join fellow heavyweights Nigeria, Egypt and Algeria with a 100 per cent record.

The win came after a polished performance by the North African side, one of the pre-tournament favourites but whose only success in the continental championship came 43 years ago.

The goal was brilliantly crafted by Noureddine Amrabat’s mazy run as he eliminated four players, before a short ‘no-look’ pass set up En-Nesyri for a left-footed finish.

2019 AFCON: Ivory Coast defeat South Africa 1-0

Aston Villa’s Jonathan Kodjia scored the only goal of the game as Ivory Coast edged past South Africa in their opening Group D encounter.

Kodjia latched on to Max Gradel’s precise pass before sidefooting through the legs of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Nicolas Pepe struck the woodwork in the first half, while Thulani Hlatshwayo headed inches over the bar for South Africa with the score still goalless.

Morocco defeated Namibia 1-0 in Sunday’s Group D opener.

Ivory Coast – who left Crystal Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha on the bench in Cairo – enjoyed the better of the openings and would have been disappointed not to go into half-time with a narrow lead.

Forward Pepe, who scored 23 goals in 41 appearances for Ligue 1 runners-up Lille last season, rattled the crossbar with a curling free-kick after being tripped on the edge of the penalty area.

Kodjia should have put the Elephants ahead moments later after latching on to Hlatshwayo’s poor clearance, but the 29-year-old fired straight at Williams with the goal gaping.

Hlatshwayo missed Bafana Bafana’s best chance, heading Sifiso Hlanti’s cross wide of the mark with the score still goalless, while Williams tipped another goal-bound Pepe free-kick over the bar late on.

  • Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba confirms retirement

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba confirms retirement

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has confirmed his retirement from playing, ending “an amazing 20 years”.

The Ivory Coast striker, 40, had two spells at Chelsea, scoring 164 goals in 381 games and winning four Premier Leagues and the 2012 Champions League.

He spent the last 18 months of his career with US side Phoenix Rising, the club he co-owns.

“After 20 years, I have decided to put an end to my playing career,” he told BBC World Service’s Sportshour.

It had been expected Drogba would retire after the United Soccer League Cup final earlier this month, with his last game a 1-0 defeat by Louisville City in the final of the United States’ second tier.

“It’s the best way to end, helping some young talent to develop,” he said.

“To give something back to the game was the best way to finish as I have learned so much in the game.”

Drogba did not play top-flight football until the age of 23, when French side Guingamp signed him from Ligue 2 Le Mans in January 2002.

He moved to Marseille 18 months later – and the following year completed a reported £24m move to Chelsea, where he had the best spell of his career.

Drogba won three Premier League titles in his first eight years at Chelsea, including in each of his first two seasons in England, as well as four FA Cups and two League Cups.

He also won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2006-07 and 2009-10.

He left on a high, scoring the winning penalty in the Champions League final shootout against Bayern Munich.

Drogba then spent six months with Shanghai Shenhua and a year and a half with Galatasaray before returning to Chelsea.

He scored seven goals in 2014-15, winning a fourth Premier League title and a third League Cup, leaving the club as their fourth highest scorer of all time.

In 2015, he joined Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact and then became player-owner of Phoenix Rising.

He scored 65 times in 105 caps for the Ivory Coast, playing in three World Cups and being named African Footballer of the Year twice.
