2023: Ayu boasts PDP will produce Nigeria’s next President

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, has urged Nigerians to keep faith with the party, saying that is poised to produce the nation’s next president.

Ayu gave the assurance on Sunday in Port Harcourt at the gala night hosted by Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers for PDP governors.

Ayu, in a statement issued to newsmen by Mr Kelvin Ebiri, the Special Assistant to Wike on Media, maintained that the current APC-led leadership has to change.

The PDP national chairman accused the APC leadership being unable to harness the rich diversity of Nigerians into better fortunes that should strengthen the bond of brotherhood and promote peaceful coexistence.

“We must change this narrative and the only way to change this narrative and harness not just the culture but the environment and the richness therein is to back the PDP which is determined to produce a new leadership for this country,” he said.

Ayu also said that Nigeria would bounce back with the PDP in the saddle because the project of rescuing the country and making it great was realisable.

He stated that the party would offer leadership that would unite the people at the national level.

“The PDP will definitely produce the next president and take the country back to the days when we were in power, when we cleared all foreign debts, when we were developing this country at a reasonable speed,” he said.

Earlier in his address, Gov.Wike said the gala night event was an addition to the usual rotational meeting of PDP governors.

He said the meetings had always been used to discuss salient issues relating to the economy, politics and others that bordered on charting a virile Nigerian society.

On his part, the Chairman of PDP Governors Forum and Governor of Sokoto, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, said the PDP governors and other party leaders were already working in synergy towards rebuilding the party.

Tambuwal said the focus was to rescue Nigeria, which will also required all Nigerians of goodwill to join force with the PDP to achieve that goal.

“I appeal and beseech every Nigerian, even those in APC that are patriotic enough, to join hands with us as we continue to march towards rescuing Nigeria together, “ he said.

Governors who were present at the gala night were Gov.Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom), Mohammed Bala (Bauchi), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).

Also in attendance were the Deputy Governors of Rivers and Zamfara, Dr Ipalibo Harry-Banigo and Mahdi Aliyu Mohammed Gusau; PDP National Secretary, Sen. Sam Anyanwu and other dignitaries.

The PDP arrowhead also noted that like APC, all bad things must come to an end.

“Otherwise our lives have been a living hell under the so-called regime of ‘CHANGE’.
“Do not expect anything better from the APC in 2022. They will still make your life nasty, brutish and short.

If you don’t do well, I will shout – Gov Wike tells new PDP chairman

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has told the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu that if he fails to do well, he will shout.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Wike made this known on Sunday at a special thanksgiving and reception held in honour of the new National Chairman of the PDP in Makurdi, Benue State.

Wike noted if the PDP had not changed its national leadership the party would have collapsed, stressing that the change of leadership would be key to the electoral victory of the party in 2023.

“We believe in you by giving you support to be the Chairman of our party. We do not want to have a situation where we will continue to have the defection of our members in the National Assembly, we do not want further defection of our members from our party.

“We want you to use your experience as people have said to make sure that even those who have left the party return back because they know that in all sincerity there is no opportunity on the other side.

“I supported you, I voted for you, because I have the believe that you can turn this PDP to success in 2023. I thank God, today I am one of the happiest persons because a new leadership has emerged I am very very happy.

“Because I know that if we did not do this, this party would have collapsed. I am very happy and most of you who refused to listen at that time you have now realized that that changing leadership is the key for this party to win in 2023.

“And I thank God that it is on you, and I will continue to make sure that you do the right thing and continue to make sure you are focused in the party, I will continue to make sure nobody distracts you, I will continue to make sure the Governors will give you the necessary support so that you can record achievements and in 2023 you will be happy and attest that God used you to produce a leadership that will make Nigeria better.

“But if you are not doing well, Mr. Chairman I will shout, I will say Mr. Chairman this is not what we expected from you.”

On his part, Senator Ayu promised to provide party members level playing field at every level to enable them actualize their aspiration. He said he would work with members of the party adding “I do not see myself as a messiah but a team player.”

Senator Ayu also, said the party would work vigorously to regain leadership of the National Assembly, enlist more women and youths as well as halt the drift from the PDP to other political parties.

“For the Presidency, we will be fair to all aspirants. There will be no favored aspirant. We will provide a level playing ground for everyone. The next President will be a product of the PDP.

“We urge Nigerians not to lose hope because a small collection of people have come together to divide us. We are a productive people who are respected across the world. Do not allow the current leadership to destroy the tenacity of this nation. PDP will be back with good policy, the economy will come back to life and we will start exporting again. As a party, we have done the needful. We will work hard to rebuild our nation and shame the foreign detractors who say Nigeria will break up.”

Two erstwhile Senate Presidents Senators David Mark and Bukola Saraki extolled the virtues of Senator Ayu describing him as a competent person to lead the party to regain power in 2023 and assured of their support for him to succeed.

The Governors of Enugu and Delta states also promised to work with the leadership of the party to ensure the victory of the party in the forthcoming general elections.

Speaking on behalf of Senators, Chairman of the North Central caucus, Senator Philip Aduda who declared support of members for the Senator Ayu leadership prayed God to grant him wisdom to lead the party to victory in 2023.

On his part, the Minority Leader of the House of Representative, Ndudi Elumelu who listed the failed promises and lies the APC told Nigerians under the change mantra to win the 2015 election said Nigerians were already crying for a return to the PDP era assuring that lawmakers would support the new leadership to succeed.

  • PDP has nothing to offer despite leadership change – APC Chieftain

PDP has nothing to offer despite leadership change – APC Chieftain

Malam Saliu Mustapha, a frontline contenders for the All Progressives Congress (APC) national championship position, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has nothing to offer Nigerians in spite of its change of leadership.

Mustapha, an APC chieftain who was the former Deputy National Chairman of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), said this in a statement he issued on Sunday in Abuja.

He described the inaugural speech of Dr Iyochia Ayu, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) new National Chairman, as a continuation of a bare-faced attempt by the party to hoodwink Nigerians to return it to power in 2023.

Mustapha added that the opposition PDP was largely responsible for the mess President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC had been cleaning up in the last six years.

“Like many stakeholders in the ruling party, I find it shocking that the new PDP chairman used his inaugural speech to rehash the lies and innuendos of the previous leadership of the opposition party.

“But contrary to Ayu’s attempt to revise history, President Buhari inherited a country that was virtually on life support with no fewer than 27 states unable to pay salaries and pension in spite of a historic oil proceeds in the preceding years.

“Between 2010 and 2014, Nigeria realised US$ 381.9 billion from oil alone, yet there was little or nothing to show for it,” he said.

He said it is therefore not too much of a surprise that PDP’s new chairman could not list a single legacy project that the former ruling party began and completed within the period it was in government.

Mustapha recalled that despite warnings by economy experts that the country was heading towards a recession as a result of PDP’s profligacy, the party continued to misinform Nigerians with tales of a robust economy.

He further recalled that under the PDP, the country’s poverty figure rose to 112 million or 63 per cent of the population in 2013.

He said it is unfortunate that the party which plunged millions of Nigerians into penury at a time of an oil boom had the audacity to attack the APC government that was doing more with little resources.

Mustapha wondered why the PDP could not identify tangible projects it put in place in its 16 years in power at the centre.

“The President Buhari-led APC administration could easily point to a number of completed projects, including the Itakpe-Warri standard gauge rail line, which had been previously abandoned for 33 years, and the Lagos-Ibadan rail project and several ongoing ones in six years.

“The new PDP chairman could only list the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) as achievements.

“Another legacy of PDP mess is the Boko Haram insurgency which the military under the watch of the Buhari administration has largely decimated and pushed to the fringes of the Lake Chad.

“This is because the armed forces are better equipped now than under the former ruling party when funds meant for arms purchase were shared by party officials.

“The new PDP chairman put Nigeria’s public debt stock at US$90 billion after suggesting that his party left the country debt free, this is a clear attempt at misleading Nigerians,” he said.

Mustapha said APC inherited a national debt of US$ 63 billion according to statistics from the Debt Management Office (DMO).

He added that unlike during the PDP era where there was little or no infrastructure to show for the indebtedness, it is glaring that loans taken by the APC-led government are tied to specific projects.

This, Mustapha said, included the rail network, the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano expressway, airport expansion and the Second Niger Bridge, amongst others which had either been delivered or are almost completed.

He added that Nigerians are now wiser and could not be deceived again by the PDP.

  • What new PDP chair, Ayu must do before attacking us, President Buhari – APC

What new PDP chair, Ayu must do before attacking us, President Buhari – APC

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a swipe at the just inaugurated National Working Committee (NWC) of Nigeria’s major political party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Recall that the new NWC led by former Senate President Iyorchia Ayu was inaugurated yesterday (Friday).

However, during the inauguration, the new PDP chairman knocked the ruling APC and President Muhammadu Buhari accusing them of mismanaging economy and leaving the country in ruins since it came on board in 2015.

In a swift response on Saturday, the National Secretary, Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), of the party, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe said the opposition party under Ayu is starting on a faulty note as it neglected addressing basic issues but seems only interested in grabbing power in 2023.

Akpanudoedehe said Ayu should have been more concerned on genuine restitution, return of stolen public funds and assets still in possession of politically exposed persons during the party’s 16-year administration.

His words: “Going by the utterances and direction of the new PDP leadership, any hope of a refocused opposition party expected to atone for misdeeds on the country when it was in government for 16 years and as a failed opposition party following PDP’s sack in 2015 have now been quickly dashed.

“Clearly, the PDP’s sole intent is power grabbing by any means, ignoring the need for genuine restitution, return of stolen public funds and assets still in possession of politically exposed persons during its 16-year administration and ultimately providing a truly viable and credible opposition our democracy needs to thrive.

“The PDP’s new leadership must prove to Nigerians that it is willing and ready to discard its penchant for impunity by submitting to the new democratic environment entrenched by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government where votes count and the will of the people prevails in all electoral contests.

“This is the task before the new Senator Iyorchia Ayu-led PDP. Not empty and tired rhetorics of 2023 handover notes.

“The sit-tight syndrome headlined by the PDP’s ill-fated third-term agenda has been discarded as an undemocratic template. “President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians and the international community of free and fair elections in 2023, even as he pledged peaceful transfer of power. That is the stuff of true progressives and statesmanship.”

Reeling out the ruling party’s achievements under President Buhari, Akpanudoedehe said the nation is now bouncing back on track.

He said the ruling party said their priority has been clearing the national rot left behind by the PDP, especially in the handling of insecurity in its early days, its financial heist under the guise of procuring military weapons, fuel subsidy rackets, diverted loans, voodoo economics, abuse of public institutions and electoral fraud.

According to APC, “Despite obvious challenges on the path, the President Muhammadu Buhari government is successfully clearing the rot and returning the country to its deserved place. This includes continuous electoral reforms and non-interference in the functions of INEC; institutional reforms which have ensured financial autonomy for local government councils; financial autonomy of state legislatures and judiciaries; assenting the long-delayed Petroleum Industry Act (PIA); infrastructure revolution in road, rail and air transportation; implementing social investments programmes thereby financially empowering millions, particularly poor Nigerians, among others.

“The hugely-successful economic diversification drive of the President Buhari government has released the creative energies of citizens and boosted agricultural productivity. Also, this government’s diversification policies has led to massive growth of the non-oil sector, spurring Nigeria’s highest growth in the last 7 years.

“Record investments in the Armed Forces and other security services has equipped, raised their morale and enabled them to effectively secure our lives and properties. The old system where impunity and corruption was pervasive is no longer the norm.”

How new PDP NWC will operate — Ayu

The National Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, says the new National Working Committee (NWC) of the party will be guided by consultation, team-work, internal democracy and national interest.

Ayu stated this in his address at the inauguration of the NWC in Abuja on Friday, assuring that the new team would strengthen the party’s internal democratic processes.

“We shall endeavour to reach out to all party members, young and old, male and female.

“This NWC will create alternate platforms within the party to actively engage the young people and our women.

“They will be engaged, not only for mobilizing and winning elections, but for advocacy, policy formulation and the design of a new development agenda for the party.

“We shall return the party to vigorous discussions; pay serious attention to new thinking and the implementation of policies and programmes that will secure and improve the quality of life of all Nigerians,” Ayu said.

He said that the Peoples Democratic Institute (PDI) would be revived and strengthened to drive the process.

The national chairman said that before the next election cycle, the new NWC would present a PDP manifesto that would bring back hope to the people.

Ayu, who added that “PDP is back to rescue and rebuild Nigeria”, urged Nigerians to keep their faith in one, united Nigeria.

He expressed optimism in the return of the party to power by 2023, saying a PDP administration would change the narrative and unite the people.

“We will deepen the content of our democracy. We will rebuild our collapsed economy. We will make Nigerians the focus of development,” Ayu said.

He called on all non-PDP members to join the party, saying “our umbrella can accommodate all of us.”

Ayu also urged all PDP members who left to come back home; saying the party’s doors were still open.

He appreciated all members of the PDP across Nigeria for their prayers, support and commitment in ensuring the emergence of the new NWC under his leadership.

The national chairman appreciated the outgoing NWC and other party leaders in ensuring a hitch-free National Convention.

Highlights of the occasion include presentation of Certificate of Return to all the new NWC members.

The outgoing National Secretary, Sen. Ibrahim Tsauri, also handed the PDP Registration Certificate over to the new National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.

Nigeria collapsing under Retired General; New PDP chair, Ayu mocks President Buhari, blasts APC during inauguration

    By Emman Ovuakporie

Chairman of the main opposition party in Nigeria, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Prof. Iyorchia Ayu on Friday took a swipe at the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, declaring that what it has succeeded in doing in the last six years of its administration is irresponsible borrowing.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports Ayu made this declaration in his inaugural speech at his inauguration as the party’s helmsman.

Ayu said the political entity known as Nigeria is fast crumbling under the watch of a retired army general as insecurity has pervaded the six goe-political zones in Nigeria.

Hear him:”In the last six years, the APC-led government has mismanaged our diversity; divided the country along regional and religious lines. It has exacerbated religious tensions in the country.

“And through its marriage to nepotism, the incompetent APC- Federal Government is fueling secessionist agitations in the East and West of Nigeria.

“The PDP is the only organic political party in Nigeria that has remained a credible, tested, tasted and trusted mass movement since the return of democracy in 1999. Other political parties have either fizzled away or merged with others.

” Some have mutated into a contraption like the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), without any clear ideology or a coherent programme of action. This contraption seduced Nigerians with propaganda in 2015. Today, Nigerians have seen the limit of propaganda and demagoguery. The only thing the APC is doing successfully is irresponsible borrowing.

“The PDP, on the other hand, has a history of performance and legacy achievements. In our 16 years in power, we not only gave Nigerians good governance, we also strengthened democratic institutions so as to add value to the people. In an unprecedented move, we stabilized our democracy by sanitizing the armed forces of politically exposed officers.

“We gave Nigeria her first-ever successful transition from one civilian administration to another in 2007. To the disbelief of all watchers of African politics, we willingly conceded defeat in 2015, and handed over power to an opposition party in 2015.

“It was the PDP-Federal Government that created value-adding public institutions like the EFCC, ICPC, NAFDAC, the Debt Management Office (DMO), the Bureau for Public Procurement (BPP) among many others.

LET US RESCUE AND REBUILD NIGERIA

The Inaugural Speech of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), His Excellency Sen. (Dr.) Iyorchia Ayu, at the International Conference Centre (ICC) Abuja…Friday 10th December 2021.

    Protocols.

Let me start by expressing my sincere gratitude to God for the honour and privilege to lead this great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). I am, indeed, most humbled.

Before going further, I wish to pay special tribute to our founding-leaders, to wit: Dr. Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme, Chief Solomon Daushep Lar, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, Alh. Abubakar Rimi, Sen. Francis Ellah and others who have transited to the great beyond.

Although they are now gone, their legacy of patriotism, visionary ideas and uncommon courage continue to inspire the great PDP Family to keep serving the people and defending democracy.

May I also warmly appreciate all members of the PDP across Nigeria for their prayers, support and commitment in ensuring the emergence of this new National Working Committee under my leadership at the remarkably successful Convention of our beloved Party. We are, indeed, one great and united PDP family.

In no particular order, kindly allow me to acknowledge the steadfastness of the outgone National Working Committee in ensuring a hitch-free National Convention; Members of National Executive Committee; the Board of Trustees; State, Local Government and Ward Chapters of our Party; Delegates to the National Convention and indeed entire PDP family. I am most grateful.

Furthermore, may I specially acknowledge the PDP’s Governors Forum, the PDP National Assembly Caucus and the PDP Elders Committee for their dedication, diligence and strategic role in stabilizing the Party, providing direction and funding intervention. Permit me to, on behalf of millions of PDP members nationwide, say thank you.

All politics, they say, is local, so bear with me as I specially appreciate the PDP Northern Caucus, the PDP North-Central Caucus and very uniquely, my dear Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Samuel Ortom. I am truly grateful.

    2. Today marks a new journey and a new direction for the PDP. As one who was part of those that founded the Party in 1998, I am well aware of its core values and vision which are centred around the people and their well-being.

Our task at this auspicious moment is to return the Party to the people. But to do that, the Party needs to be reinvigorated, reinvented and repositioned. We are not unmindful of our missed steps and actions in the past, but we have learnt our lessons, both in government and in opposition. Today, we stand tall, and with a firm resolve to rebuild our great party and rescue our nation.

    3. The PDP is the only organic political party in Nigeria that has remained a credible, tested, tasted and trusted mass movement since the return of democracy in 1999. Other political parties have either fizzled away or merged with others.

Some have mutated into a contraption like the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), without any clear ideology or a coherent programme of action. This contraption seduced Nigerians with propaganda in 2015. Today, Nigerians have seen the limit of propaganda and demagoguery. The only thing the APC is doing successfully is irresponsible borrowing.

    4. The PDP, on the other hand, has a history of performance and legacy achievements. In our 16 years in power, we not only gave Nigerians good governance, we also strengthened democratic institutions so as to add value to the people. In an unprecedented move, we stabilized our democracy by sanitizing the armed forces of politically exposed officers.

We gave Nigeria her first-ever successful transition from one civilian administration to another in 2007. To the disbelief of all watchers of African politics, we willingly conceded defeat in 2015, and handed over power to an opposition party in 2015.

It was the PDP-Federal Government that created value-adding public institutions like the EFCC, ICPC, NAFDAC, the Debt Management Office (DMO), the Bureau for Public Procurement (BPP) among many others.

    5. The PDP administration also strengthened the governance process by enacting laws to effectively drive public administration in Nigeria, namely: the Fiscal Responsibility Act, the Mid-Term Expenditure Frame-Work, the Treasury Single Account (TSA), Integrated Personal and Payroll Information Systems (IPPIS) just to mention a few.

    6. We negotiated and obtained forgiveness of over $30 Billion of debt, making Nigeria almost a debt-free country. Foreign direct investments flowed in. Cumulatively, the foregoing made Nigeria, not only the fastest growing economy in Africa, but also the biggest economy on the continent.

    7. From the biggest economy in 2015, the APC has given the country two recessions and turned Nigeria into the Poverty Capital of the world. Today, close to 40 million Nigerians have no jobs.

8.In the last six years, the APC-led government has mismanaged our diversity; divided the country along regional and religious lines. It has exacerbated religious tensions in the country.

And through its marriage to nepotism, the incompetent APC- Federal Government is fueling secessionist agitations in the East and West of Nigeria.

    9. Your Excellencies, party faithful, very distinguished ladies and gentlemen, our dear Nigeria is drifting dangerously towards a failed state. Terrorists are now sharing sovereignty with Nigeria. Nigeria is simply ungoverned. Nigeria is collapsing under the leadership of a retired general!

    10. The APC used both the mainstream media and the social media to access power. Today, it coordinates a systematic assault on the media, civic freedoms and freedom of speech.

    11. Let me give you the grim legacy of the APC: Two economic recessions in six years. A sluggish GDP growth rate of below two percent.

About 40 million Nigerians have been pushed into extreme poverty in six years.
Inflation is at an all-time high at 18%.

A weak and devalued Naira; devalued by over 300% since 2015, has made our currency the worst in Africa.

Unemployment now stands at 33%. Meaning: Close to 40 million Nigerians, willing and able to work, can’t find jobs.

A total debt stock of over $90 billion now hangs over Nigeria. An erratic exchange rate regime has depleted N324 against the US Dollar in the last six years.

Kidnapping for ransom is now big business. We share sovereignty with terrorists who kidnap and rape our women, including our mothers and under-aged children.
The terrorists even kill them when ransom is delayed.
These are not political alarms, but statements of facts.

    12. But I stand here today, not to merely recount APC’s spectacular failures. I stand here to assure you that PDP is back to Rescue and Rebuild Nigeria. Under the new NWC, PDP will strengthen its internal democratic processes. We shall endeavour to reach out to all party members, young and old, male and female.

    13. This National Working Committee will create alternate platforms within the Party to actively engage the young people and our women, not only for mobilizing and winning elections, but for advocacy, policy formulation and the design of a new development agenda for the Party.

    14. We shall return the party to vigorous discussions; pay serious attention to new thinking and the implementation of policies and programmes that will secure and improve the quality of life of all Nigerians.

The Peoples Democratic Institute (PDI) will be revived and strengthened to drive this process. Before the next election cycle, we shall present a PDP manifesto that will bring back Hope to our people.

    15. My dear compatriots, KEEP HOPE ALIVE. Do not allow a small and rapacious cabal to destroy your faith in one, united Nigeria.

    16. A PDP administration will change the narrative.

    We will unite the people.

We will deepen the content of our democracy.

We will rebuild our collapsed economy.

We will make Nigerians the focus of development.

We will expand our international vision beyond Niger Republic.

We will check the rampaging insecurity.

We will restore Nigeria’s lost glory.

And we will reclaim our dignity, destiny and pride as the Giant of Africa.

    17. To our faithful, I, on behalf of the new NWC, pledge to be guided by consultation, team-work, internal democracy and national interest. To all non-PDP members, we say our umbrella can accommodate all of us. And to our members who left, I urge you to come back home; our doors are still open.

    18. To the APC, we, once again, renew our quit notice on you. Begin to prepare your handover notes.

    19. To Africa and the international community – we know you are worried about Nigeria. But we assure you that PDP will pull back Nigeria from the brink. PDP will not allow Nigeria to fulfil those doomsday predictions.

    20. We acknowledge the historic role of the media in the fight for our independence and the return of Nigeria to democratic rule. It is in recognition of these that we ask for the support and cooperation of the media in the historic task of Rescuing and Rebuilding Nigeria, Come 2023.

    21. Join hands with us. Together, we shall reclaim and rebuild our country to be one of the greatest countries in the world.

    22. Long Live, the Peoples Democratic Party! Long live, the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    Thank you all.

  • Fresh trouble for Secondus as New PDP chair Ayu threatens to drag him, others to EFCC over party funds

Fresh trouble for Secondus as New PDP chair Ayu threatens to drag him, others to EFCC over party funds

Indications emerged on Thursday that the Dr Iyorchia Ayu-led incoming National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may invite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe its financial transactions particularly under the previous administrations.

Ayu, the National Chairman-elect party stated this in Abuja on Thursday.

He spoke with reporters in Abuja on the imperative of accountability in the handling of party finances, which has been lacking, after the PDP lost the Presidency in 2015.

He said: “By the time we come to office, accountability will remain our watch word and I want to assure all of you that we will run the PDP administration as transparently as possible.

“The outgoing NWC has set up different committees to look into different areas. We shall take up all the reports, review them, look at the facts and then, attend to each issue according to the facts available to us”.

Giving a direct hint of what to expect when the newly-elected National Working Committee (NWC) members resume office on December 9, Ayu said: ”I want to assure you that we shall try to clean our house, no matter who is going to be affected.

“We shall try to clean our house by following due process. And that due process also includes exhausting all internal conflict resolving mechanism before we bring in any external intervention when we cannot resolve the issue”.

A former PDP National Chairman, Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo, had, in a paper he presented at the party’s just concluded two-day retreat, alleged mismanagement of party funds during the period. Nwodo was removed from office in 2012, after spending seven months as chairman.

In his paper, entitled: Accountability and Transparency in the Management of Party Funds, Nwodo stated that the N11 billion and N800 million he left in the party’s fixed and current accounts could not be accounted for.

He said: “Today, we seem to have lost it. I handed over N11 billion in fixed deposit and N800 million in current account when I left as national chairman after seven months.

“I don’t see what was done with that money. Billions were raised to finish our national headquarters. We don’t seem to have a trace of where all that money went.

“Our headquarters is yet to be completed. Today we don’t even have a party account. We have to get back to strict monitoring of our party accounts.

“Our internal audit department needs to be strengthened and supported by the party leadership. Very strict sanctions must be imposed on mismanagement of party funds.

“I suggest that we include inviting EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) to probe errant officers and members and prosecute those found culpable. This is the only way to create deterrent”.

Those that served as National Chairman after Nwodo were Mohammed Haliru Bello, Abubakar Baraje, Bamanga Tukur, Adamu Mu’azu, Uche Secondus (Acting), Ali Modu Sheriff, Ahmed Makarfi (Interim), and Uche Secondus.

On the party’s position on direct primary clause passed by the National Assembly in the latest amendment to the Electoral Act, Ayu said the party would involve stakeholders in arriving at a common position.

“I have not read the amendment. So, I cannot comment on it yet. But, we have been briefed by our representatives at the National Assembly.

“We are going to involve all stakeholders and party organs in consultation to enable us take an informed position. We are going to adopt a holistic approach on the matter and everybody will be carried along.”

Ayu spoke against the planned subsidy removal by the Federal Government and hike in the price of petrol, saying that the rich are the beneficiaries of subsidy, while the masses are bearing the hardship.

“The PDP does not believe in visiting more hardship on the Nigerian people. The party has not discussed the issue of increase in petroleum prices but our general position is that the people of Nigeria are already hard pressed, there is so much hardship.

“If you are poor, you are not going to benefit from what is called petroleum subsidy because if you increase the price of petroleum products today, with the kind of suffering that Nigerians are going through, it means that there will be enormous difficulty in transportation.

“Food prices will escalate and there are already very high prices out there. You will find that crime rate will increase. Every single vice which has escalated under the APC will double.

“So, the APC government is trying to take us into the highest level of suffering and ultimately, taking Nigerians to a position of non-existence.”

  • Why our loss in 2015 is blessing in disguise – New PDP National Chairman

Why our loss in 2015 is blessing in disguise – New PDP National Chairman

The National Chairman-elect of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Iyorchia Ayu, has said the party’s loss of the presidential election in 2015 was a blessing in disguise.

According to him, the last six years of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has left no one in doubt that Nigeria was far better under the PDP administration.

He thinks the PDP might have become complacent had the party remained in government till now.

Speaking with reporters in Abuja, Ayu said the PDP under his watch will reposition the party to take back power in 2023.

He said: “My priority is for the party to take power. Political parties’ priority is always to win.

“Therefore, I reviewed the reasons why we lost power in 2015 and I am going to work to unite the party, to sharpen the programmes of the party, market the party to the Nigerian electorate in a way that they will be prepared to vote for us.

“In a democracy, it’s normal for a political party to lose power. If we didn’t lose power, maybe we would have become a dictatorship or become complacent.

“To believe in democracy…there must have been something we were doing wrong or must have done wrong that the Nigerian electorate shifted.”
