Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and his major challenger, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, yesterday, embraced each other for the first time in many months.

Before the meeting of the key political actors at the Oba of Benin palace on Wednesday, there have been weeks of heated tension in the state as a result of the activities of the two leading political parties in Edo, the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, took a bold step to end the trend of violence in the State, with the series of attacks and counter-attacks during campaign rallies.

The peace meeting had the presence of various leaders of the PDP and the APC in Edo at his palace.

The immediate past Governor of the State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, his predecessor, John Oyegun, the PDP candidate, Obaseki, the APC flagbearer, Ize-Iyamu, and the State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, among other political actors, were the notable faces at the meeting.

Obaseki and his main challenger, Ize-Iyamu went before the monarch to pay homage shortly after all the attendees were seated.

The revered monarch urged all political actors in the State to sheath their swords and demanded words of assurance that peace would be maintained before, during, and after the election.

The monarch asked the political office seekers to emulate former President Goodluck Jonathan who conceded defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 general elections even before the results were announced.

“To me, they (the political actors in Edo) are all one family, and what cannot be resolved when you are all family?

“Family can quarrel but there must be a resolution. Today, that is what I want us to achieve; there must be a resolution,” the monarch stated.

In their various responses, the Governor and his main challenger promised His Royal Majesty that they would make peace their watchword going forward.

“I want to assure you, Your Majesty, that in my role as the Chief Security Officer of the state, I am doing all I can, all within my possible best to maintain peace and safety in Edo State,” Obaseki told the Oba of Benin.

Ize-Iyamu, on his part, said, “Every campaign we do henceforth, we are going to spend some time to also talk to all of them (party supporters) about the need to keep to the peace, no matter what provocation they might talk about.”

At this point, the PDP and APC candidates, Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu came together and embraced each other, in a bid to send out a message to their supporters and make good the assurances given to the traditional ruler.

Edo 2020: Why federal lawmakers snub Obaseki, pitch tent with Ize-Iyamu

    By Emman Ovuakporie

More facts emerged on Wednesday as to why Edo Federal Lawmakers in the upper legislative Chambers shunned Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and pitched tent with the All Progressives Congress, APC Guber candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reliably gathered that Obaseki deliberately kept the lawmakers in the dark about his defection plans from APC to PDP.

A source privy to this development told TNG that”he (Obaseki) didn’t deem it necessary to inform the lawmakers and this apparently irked the members.

“If he sees them as not worthy enough to be part of his defection plans from APC to PDP at the appropriate time then it’s absolutely impossible for the lawmakers in APC to defect with him.

“From day one he had plans to defect and he refused to tell them and this were members who stood with him all through and he turned his back on them.

“This is one major reason why the who is who in Edo State is solidly behind Ize-Iyamu who has the best grassroots network in the state.

“Look at the calibre of politicians campaigning for POI and you can easily decipher that Obaseki’s days are numbered in government house.

“Do you expect the lawmakers in APC to go and ask him why he failed to inform them that he was defecting, of course the answer is a capital NO!

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo has suspended its campaign following an auto crash close to Oluku Junction, near Benin on Benin-Lagos Road, which claimed the lives of two policemen and a yet to be ascertained number of party chieftains and supporters.

Its Governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, was billed to campaign on Tuesday at Usen, Ovia Southwest Local Government Area.

But he called it off in honour of the deceased.

Edo APC, through chairman of its Media Campaign Council, John Mayaki, disclosed that around Oluku junction, a trailer ran into the travelling campaign entourage of top chieftains of the APC, which it said led to loss of lives.

Edo Poll: Oba of Benin invites Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu for peace pact

The Oba of Benin, who is worried of the violent dimension that campaigns are going, said he would invite all the governorship candidates participating in the coming governorship election in the state to his palace to sign a peace pact.

This, he said especially between the two major political parties; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oba Ewuare II said this while receiving, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), Prof. Mahmud Yakubu and his entourage in the palace.

According to the monarch, the peace pact would enable them to talk to their followers to eschew violence before, during and after the September 19 governorship election.

He advised that politicians must learn to emulate the immediate past President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan who for the interest of peace and the unity of the country accepted the outcome of the presidential election which eventually saw Muhammadu Buhari as the nation’s president as at today.

He maintained that the palace has always remained neutral in the state’s politics but has regards and concerns for the candidate who has respect for the traditional institution, create jobs for the people so that can put foods on their families’ tables and respect the masses.

The monarch further said to douse the political tensions in the nation’s politics, a single term system should be encouraged noting that such will not only cut costs but also reduce the undue tensions that are associated with it.

Iriase accuses Obaseki, Shaibu, PDP of unleashing violence in Edo, seeks help from FG

Former Deputy Majority Whip of the House of Representatives, Pally Iriase on Tuesday said Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP are unleashing violence in Edo State and desecrating democratic values ahead of the governorship election in the state.

Iriase said Obaseki and his agents took to violence and other acts of intimidation because he (Obaseki) knows that his lies and press propaganda have failed and the people have rejected him for non-performance.

In a statement issued to newsmen, he said, “The Governor and his agents led by the Council Chairman of Owan East LGA has since yesterday 24/8/20 embarked on violent acts of brigandage and intimidation to scuttle the scheduled ward to ward rallies in Owan East LGA today 25/8/20.

At Ihievbe the Chairman led hooligans to destroy the podium, the chairs and canopies at the premises. APC Leaders in the area had avoided public school fields and paid for the foreground of the Catholic Church as venue, yet Obaseki’s agents went on the orgy of destruction in that church premises.

At Otuo APC sought to use the same primary school field that Gov Obaseki and the PDP used for their rally over a week ago but the Governor’s hooligans led by the Council Chairman came to disrupt preparations, chanting war songs.

At Arokho, the same gang of hoodlums chased away the workers preparing the podium in the same school field used by Obaseki and the PDP barely a week ago.

These acts of violence, intimidation and provocation are being perpetrated by Gov Obaseki because he knows that his lies and press propaganda have failed and the people have rejected him for non-performance.

We are hereby making a clarion call to the security agencies to help Edo State and indeed Nigeria to maintain democratic values during this election.

Edo 2020: It’s time for Orhionmwon to produce Governor – Ize-Iyamu

Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the APC candidate for the Sept. 19 governorship election in Edo, says it is the turn of Orhiomwon Local Government Council to produce the next governor of the state.

The All Progressives Congress candidate made the assertion on Saturday during his electioneering at Iyoba Ward 4 and Ugboko Ward 5 of the local government area.

Ize-Iyamu, who hails from Orhionmwon local government area, said: “God has given us the nomination; it’s just for you to vote for APC on Sept. 19.

“We are looking for 100 per cent votes from these wards; we want to win the 12 wards in Orhionmwon.

“I am not happy with the poor development in the council and I promise to provide the basic amenities in the council if I become the Edo governor.

“One of the first things I want to provide in this council is electricity, because power supply promotes development.

“I will also ensure that the Benin-Abraka Road that transverses this council will also be reconstructed,” he said.

Also speaking, Adams Oshiomole, former APC National Chairman, said that Ize-Iyamu had the agenda that summarised the problems of Edo as well as proffer solutions to the problems.

“If you vote for your son, he will build standard roads in this community.

“You have a duty to bring a man who is God-fearing to take over the affairs of the state come Nov.11, 2020.

“He will bring back Edo to the part of development,” Oshiomole said.

Earlier, Ize-Iyamu visited the Palace of Ogierhiakhi Ogiugu, the Enogie of Ugo-Niyekorhiomwon, Orhionmwon, where he sought his royal blessings.

Build up to Edo 2020: Ize -Iyamu preaches gospel of non violence as APC, PDP allege stockpiling of arms

… INEC warns of likely consequences

… Edolites nurse fears of bloodshed

    By Emman Ovuakporie

Barely four weeks from now the Edo guber race will take place, but the signals emanating from the heartbeat of the nation are heart trembling.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) Africa’s number one news portal reports the allegations and counter allegations of arms stockpiling by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC clearly indicate that the election maybe soaked in blood.

This is just as the guber candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu preaches the gospel of non-violence and politics without bitterness.

Apparently overwhelmed by the reports of the drums of war echoing in Edo State, Pastor Ize-Iyamu doused all tensions by declaring that:

“The worst I will do is to go to court if I lose at the polls but going into violence is not in my character.

The RCCG Pastor made this declaration in a media parley last Thursday when he was asked whether as a man of God his political interests will not clash with his calling.
Hear Him:” I am a pastor of RCCG and there’s no way I will lose my calling because of politics because if good people don’t involve themselves who else,” he wondered.

Ize-Iyamu further exemplified this by sending a letter of empathy to PDP when their vehicle was involved in an auto crash in Edo North.

Allegations and counter allegations on arms acquisition by both major parties:

Chief Tony Momoh, an APC chieftain, a lawyer and a veteran journalist had raised alarm last week that there will be blood shed in the heartbeat if care is not taken in the scheduled September 19 guber polls.

The former minister in an interview he granted said it’s going to be battle royale as the APC is heavily factionalized due to the movement of Governor Obaseki to PDP.

Now, at the national level, we “have APC showed their strength recently, which is very encouraging; our governors were there, our parliamentarians were there, our leaders were there and others. I hope that one is monetised; in other words, they need to support for campaigns in the state, because when support is sure, there is nothing PDP will do in Edo. In the South-South, it is all PDP; it is only in that zone that we don’t have APC now, as we have lost Edo to PDP. Now, the PDP governors in South-South are the biggest earners from the federation account; they are heavy earners and heavy spenders, they are not going to lose Edo by not participating in ensuring that they win. They will lose the election if Edo voters insist that they want APC to continue to rule that state and ignore the use of money. When it comes to monetizing election, this Edo election will be heavily monetised, and it is not only the governors in the South-South that will be pumping their resources into Edo State, the PDP governors all over the country will ensure that they control the state. So, it is battle royal.

What happened last week has taken another dimension and the battle line is drawn, and I’m afraid that there will be more violence than anticipated. So, all the security agencies have to sit down and put everything they have into Edo to make sure that there is free and fair election.

The deputy Governor of Edo State, Hon Phillip Shaibu too had threatened that if care is not taken Edo State may emerge as the centre of revolution in Nigeria.

He alleged that as former APC Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole’s son he had privilege Information on arms acquisition by his father (Oshiomhole).

In all these, the police has not been able to probe the alleged acquisition of arms in the state.

Explaining the state of security in the state, Ize-Iyamu alleged that those caught so far with arms are thugs of his opponents in the state.
“He said the police is in a better position to announce those who were actually caught with arms.
The apex electoral body in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC apparently sensing the danger ahead had warned that the election could be suspended.

In a statement issued on Friday the electoral body also warrned that if the drums of war continues to echo, the Emergency Rule could be imposed on the state.

Edolites too are already scared of what may transpire on the day of election as the noise of alleged blood shed and violence rents the air in the heartbeat of the nation.

  • Your ambition not worth blood of Edo people, Ize-Iyamu’s campaign tells Obaseki

Your ambition not worth blood of Edo people, Ize-Iyamu’s campaign tells Obaseki

The Campaign Council of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship flagbearer, has told the state governor and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Godwin Obaseki that his second term ambition is not worth the blood and life of citizens of the state.

Accusing the governor of been desperate of winning the September 19, governorship election, the APC governorship candidate campaign council, alleged that Obaseki has embarked on executing plans to prevent the people of the State from delivering a verdict on the four-year misrule of Obaseki at the polls with violence and other criminal acts of intimidation.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Friday, the deputy head of the media and publicity committee of the APC National Campaign Council, Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon said the governor and the PDP candidate have resorted to coercing the people of the state in desperation to get re-elected despite his rejection by the people.

He alleged that the governor and his party have engaged in illegal importation of dangerous arms and ammunition for thugs and criminals from neighboring PDP States, particularly Delta, with the sole aim of causing mayhem and disrupting the peaceful conduct of the election in most parts of Edo State.

According to Obahiagbon, “Less than one month to the Edo Governorship election, and with defeat staring Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his party of tax-collectors, the PDP, in the face, they have both abandoned their pretense at democracy and guided participation in the election, and brazenly embarked on the execution of their plans to prevent the people of Edo State from delivering a verdict on the four-year misrule of Obaseki at the polls on the 19th of September with violence and other criminal acts of intimidation.

“Let it be known by the whole world that the Governor of Edo State and his government, in continuation of their disregard for the rule of law, democratic ethics and constitutionalism, has intensified their illegal importation of dangerous arms and ammunition, as well as the daily recruitment and importation of notorious thugs and criminals from neighboring PDP States, particularly Delta, for the purpose of causing mayhem and disrupting the peaceful conduct of the election in most parts of Edo State.

“We have it on good authority that that the Edo State Government and members of its kitchen cabinet have drawn up a list of prominent APC leaders across Edo State that they gave targeted for maiming, physical assault, assassination, kidnapping and sponsored robbery attacks whilst also tinkering with the idea of using heavy duty trailers to orchestrate road accidents of APC leader, before or on the day of the September 19th Governorship elections.”

The campaign council said it was alarmed at the rapid multiplication of firearms in the state and the wanton violence and shooting that characterised the PDP campaign, causing residents to flee their homes upon hearing news of the outgoing Governor’s visit.

“We are alarmed at the rapid multiplication of these firearms and the now-too-common presence of violent groups with prolific ammunition who are on the march with the Edo state Governor as he campaigns from place to place and in the process terrorizing the people and leaving behind an unfortunate trail of sorrow, blood, and tears everywhere he goes for campaigns.

“Rather than excite, Mr. Governor’s campaign trail has now become a bad omen, a harbinger of evil, and a stage of wanton violence and shootings, causing residents to flee their homes upon hearing news of the outgoing Governor’s visit.”

The APC cited the violent incident on Wednesday, August 19th, in Igueben LGA where thugs allegedly hired and armed by the Edo State government, turned their guns on each other and shot an innocent citizen in the fracas that ensued.

“We are disappointed, disheartened, and extremely repulsed by the fact that a government that failed the youths and derided them at every turn has now gone ahead to place guns purchased with state resources that could have gone into empowerment schemes in the hands of some, urging them to wreak havoc and risk their lives, and those of others, in the process.

“We are equally aghast at the fact that a Governor that spent four years chasing away investors from Edo State with his tyranny, bad faith and targeted policies, and destruction of people’s legitimate properties on the account of their political views, has now committed state resources to the mobilization of thugs, cult groups, assassins, and other criminals into the state to carry out his murderous plans all in a bid to avoid a fate he sealed for himself with his incompetence and aloof disposition.”

The APC Campaign Council further alleged that “the outgoing Edo state Governor has become desperate and now willing to muzzle his way back to Government House but must Edo State become a carnage field of blood, tears, sorrows and deaths for the realization of his second term aspirations?

“We are not only condemning, in the strongest of terms, this daily distribution of illegal arms to mobilized thugs, we demand an investigation and arrests that will be followed by swift prosecution as a mark of seriousness on the part of the security agencies to protect the integrity of the September 19 election.

“Arms proliferation has fueled insecurity in Nigeria for years and we are convinced that by clamping down on Governor Godwin Obaseki and his agents of terror, who on a daily basis are funneling state funds to the illegal acquisition and distribution of weapons, the security agencies would be laying a marker in the sand and sending a strong signal to other perpetrators of this crime that it would no longer be business as usual.

“Nothing warrants nor justify this undemocratic inclination to violence where the exchange of ideas should reign supreme. The protection of the integrity of the Edo Governorship election from the brooding and sprawling violence of Mr. Godwin Obaseki is a collective obligation that must be shared by all well-meaning citizens and groups interested in the survival of democracy and the constitutional right and freedom of the people to determine the leadership of their state and their representatives in government.”

  • For Edo, Ize-Iyamu is a two-in-one product

    For Edo, Ize-Iyamu is a two-in-one product

    By Olatunde Bello-Ishola

The offer is mouth-watering and irresistible. And it is in plain sight: no ambiguity or sophistry. Aside from his accretion of qualities, the practical and well-thought-out promises to salvage the state from the doldrums with the ‘SIMPLE Agenda’, there is so much more why Edo people are eager to vote for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the September 19th gubernatorial election.

Don’t blame them. Who doesn’t like good things especially, when they are literally free? With Ize-Iyamu as governor, the state would also have his wife, Professor Idia Ize-Iyamu, an equally competent, cerebral and conscientious woman, as First Lady. Theirs is a pairing made in heaven and consecrated here on earth for the betterment of Edo people.

For the past two decades, Professor Idia, a consultant orthodontist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, had served as the unsullied force of hope and energy behind her lawyer-husband as he navigated through a successful private legal career and an illustrious public service.

Now that he aspires to be governor of their beloved state, there is no scintilla of doubt that she would enhance and encourage his patriotic, heartfelt efforts and imbue him with the verve and value necessary to accelerate his wholesome and widespread growth plans for Edo State.

The job of a governor requires domestic felicity, an impartial omnipresent sounding board and informed adviser – someone to keep him grounded and focused on his campaign promises – a spouse that would have extraordinary resilience and grace under pressure. They don’t come better prepared and positioned than Professor Idia.

Here is a woman, who has expertly negotiated her way through life, charting her own course, blazing new trails while building a thriving career in both public and private services, which she has also balanced with sterling family life, more so as a doting wife and mother.

A 1992 graduate of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, she worked with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital from 1992 to 1993 and did her National Youth Service Corp, NYSC, at the Military Hospital, Bonny Camp, Lagos, from 1993 to 1994. She also had a brief stint at the Smile Well Dental Clinic between 1994 and 1995.

But the allure of the academics was so strong that she moved back to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) as a lecturer in 1997 and has served in various capacities in the institution. She became an Associate Professor of Orthodontics in 2014 and is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons.

She also attended the Oxford University United Kingdom on a Commonwealth Medical Fellowship in 2016. Prof. Idia is also the Pastor-in-charge of Teenage Church at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Trinity Sanctuary, Region 13, Headquarters Parish.

So, Prof Idia, an inspirational, yet, unobtrusive, supportive, albeit stern professional and human, when it comes to the wellbeing of the people, will not just be an appendage of government, she would add value as an academic, a mother, an indigene and a medical practitioner.

Noteworthy is that her riveting message – that the improved lives of women and girls in the state and the world at large will lead to stronger and safer economies – is proving to be transformational and catching up with the women and youth demographics.

Recently, she told a gathering that women and children were the first victims of misgovernance. As such, she disclosed that there is a plan to train and empower Edo State women, provide infrastructure, and create gainful employment opportunities for the youths while noting that it was the fundamental duty of a responsible government to identify itself with the hopes and aspirations of the people.

Referencing her husband’s ‘SIMPLE Agenda’, she stated that with the population of 3.2million people and a landmass of 18,000 square kilometres, Edo State is bigger by land size and population than many countries. Yet, she lamented that the state does not have an institutionalised social welfare system to cater to the needs of its people.

As a corrective measure, she promised that, “Every resident of Edo State will be allotted a personalised lifetime Social Security Number. Every child born here will also have a dedicated Social Security Number. With this, his government can track the need for assistance amongst our women, children, disabled, the elderly and vulnerable members of that society.”

She further explained that the innovative system contained in the ‘SIMPLE Agenda’ would also assist the authorities to track the number of children going to school and those joining the labour market. And that each of the 192 wards in Edo State will have a social welfare officer and a team assigned to it while reporting to a coordinating office at the senatorial level that reports to the central database at the headquarters.

“The Social welfare offices will be empowered by law to adjudicate on matrimonial problems and help resolve them through family counselling and mediation services,” she added.

The renowned academic believes that the scope and the significance of her husband’s ‘SIMPLE Agenda’ far exceeds social media-ready sound bites and, therefore, is also rallying professionals and religious bodies among others towards the elections.

Conversely, some health professionals – her constituency – under the auspices of Better Health for Edo have endorsed Pastor Ize-Iyamu for having a detailed and realistic manifesto on how to provide quality and affordable health care for all.

In a meeting with Professor Idia, the medical group announced its formation of ‘POI Health’ support group, which includes members of subsectors in the health profession charged with the mandate to conduct health awareness campaigns at strategic points in Edo to sell the POI health agenda to other professionals and the public.

She thanked the body for its support and assured it of her husband’s commitment to the health sector, including addressing the poor doctor to patient ratio and lack of infrastructure.

“As a health professional, with years of practice in the state, I’m familiar with the issues you have raised. In Edo, today, we have less than 200 doctors in the 18 local governments to serve 3.5 million people. This has caused a poor ratio of one doctor to 17,500 people.

“The only good hospital we had as a state hospital, the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin, which catered for a large number of diverse medical, surgical and gynaecological issues, was stripped of the state-of-the-art facilities and turned to a COVID-19 centre.

“If you go to the Central Hospital, Benin, owned by the state government, there is no roof at the male medical ward. The dialysis centre is no more functional. The stench from the heap of faeces there is suffocating,” she noted with promising of a better future.

She concluded that in the ‘SIMPLE Agenda’ is contained, a detailed and workable plan for doctors and solutions that would help to provide an enabling environment and build infrastructure that would generate employment and give the people a better life and livelihood.

Without doubts, it suffices to say that, behind the steely, serious, business-like, compassionate, trustworthy and promising mandate that the Ize-Iyamu candidacy represents is a sound and solid professor, who is coming all out to give her husband’s governorship bid the best possible push and support, both at home and in the public.
