  • Edo 2020: Obaseki running from pillar to post as Oshiomhole still maintains dignified silence

… Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu signpost readiness for battle

    By Emman Ovuakporie

Barely 25 days from today, the All Progressives Congress, APC must have produced a flag bearer for Edo guber polls as the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki continues to run from pillar to post to garner support to clinch a ticket.

ThenewsGuru.com, TNG reports that from all indications all avenues that could fetch Obaseki a ticket to run in the race as APC flag bearer have been blocked.

It was reported by some media channels that his attempts to meet with the Asiwaju of Lagos, Bola Tinubu was clandestinely blocked.

It was also gathered that he reportedly met President Muhamnadu Buhari to support his re-election bid and intervene on his behalf.

This is just as the annointed one, Pastor Osagie Ize-,Iyamu was declared a consensus candidate by loyalists of the APC chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

Surprisingly, however, despite all the political noise being made by politicians in the state ,Oshiomhole continues to maintain a dignified silence.

This new oath to observe the science of silence by the loquacious former Comrade governor is being viewed by many political analysts as another political weapon designed to rattle Obaseki’s camp.

However, despite this unusual silence, Obaseki on Wednesday sent a strong signal to all his political detractors that no man can stop him from running for, and winning, the coveted governorship position of the state.

He equally sent a veiled message to the APC chairman that the party’s primaries to pick the flag bearer will be held in Edo not Abuja.

The governor told whoever cared to listen that he is not afraid of whatever mode of primaries adopted by the party.

Ize-Iyamu who has been congratulated by his fellow contestants has picked his nomination form hours before a group led by former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh led a group to APC headquarters to pick that of Obaseki.

Nevertheless, as the primaries draw closer, the embattled governor has embarked on massive developmental projects across the state to further gather support before the primaries slated for June 22.

  • Edo 2020: More troubles for Obaseki as APC clears Ize-Iyamu to contest party’s primary

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has granted waiver to new ‘decampee’, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu participate at the party’s primary.

With this development, Ize-Iyamu who contested against incumbent governor Godwin Obaseki in 2016 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is now free to contest for the governorship ticket of the APC.

The committee also adopted direct primary option for the emergency of the party’s flagbearer for September 19, 2020 Edo State governorship election.

A source at the meeting which ran into late hours of Thursday night said NWC granted waiver for the former Chief of Staff and Secretary to the Edo State government in view of the electoral value he will had to the fortunes of the ruling party in the state.

Ize-Iyamu, believed to be the endorsed candidate of Comrade Adams Oshiomole, National Chairman of the party, recently decamped to the ruling party in the state.

According to a report by The Nation, the NWC also adopted the direct primary option for the Edo State APC governorship primary slated for June 22, 2020.

It was gathered that NWC had resolved to adopt the option earlier used in the state for the governorship primary. This the committee further noted would give every card carrying member of the party to determine who the flagbearer is for the state governorship election.

On Ondo State governorship primary slated for 20th July, 2020, our source at the meeting said the committee was yet to consider the Ondo State primary. “We have a month after Edo State primary before Ondo State. We only delibrated on Edo State. We shall do that of Ondo very soon,” our source hinted.

When contacted on phone the National Publicity Secretary (NPS) of the party, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu confirmed the direct primary as option adopted for the party’s Edo State gubernatorial primary. “Yes the NWC adopted the direct primary for Edo State and we also granted wavier for a governorship aspirant,” the NPS confirmed.

Those at the NWC meeting chaired by the National Chairman, had in attendance, the Deputy National Chairman (South), Senator Abiola Ajimobi, National Vice-Chairman (North-West), Inuwa Abdulkadir and his counterpart from the South-South, Hilliard.

Other are the acting National Secretary, Waziri Bulama, National Organising Secretary, Emma Ibidiro and National Legal Adviser, Babatunde Ogala.

Commending what he called landmark decisions by the National Working Committee, the pro-Oshiomole Edo State APC Chairman, Hon. David Imuse in a telephone interview said the NWC did what is right for Edo State. He also welcomed the wavier granted Ize-Iyamu.

According to the APC chieftain, “the NWC have the constitutional right to do what they have done. The adoption of direct primary is within the capacity of the committee. On Ize-Iyamu, in all political parties, anybody that is seen as an asset to the party, NWC is empowered to grant waiver and they did just that. Ize-Iyamu is an asset to the party and the waiver is welcome by the party,” Imuse stated

What’s happening in Edo State today was similar to what took place in the 2004 US Presidential election which as you will recall was a polarizing time in in the country. Everything was reduced to red and blue. John Kerry was the devil incarnate to Republicans, while George Bush was the devil incarnate to Democrats, and there was no room in the debate to consider each man on his own merits, nor each issues on its face.

It was as if the fate of the World was hung in the balance just as the fate of Edo State is hung in the balance between two political gladiators today. Leaders of each party whipped Americans into such a hyperventilated frenzy that otherwise, intelligent Republicans started to believe that if John Kerry won the White House would cease to exist, while Democrats felt that if George Bush retained the White House we were all doomed. So it is today in the eyes of the storm of this blind partisanship Etsako born analyst.

The fate of Edolites are locked in this forth coming experiment of influence called election. The only thing expected of them is to pray, hope and wait for the outcome of the gladiator’s battle particularly with the Covid 19 pandemic not everyone can participate in the election be it direct or indirect system of primary for fear of being infected. Indeed, many are the challenges militating against the prosperity of Edo ahead of the coming election.

All the aspirants in the forthcoming Edo Governorship primaries are not greenhorns in the political arena. They have tasted power and so know what it is. The election will pit the incumbent Godwin Obaseki against a familiar foe that were on the trenches with him in the 2016 general election. This is not unexpected though but one thing that is certain is that whatever becomes of the Edo APC primary election, the incumbent Godwin Obaseki is sure to be in the race in the platform which will be obvious at that time but if the others didn’t arrive at a consensus then the tide is sure to favor the incumbent on same platform of the APC. Despite the crowded aspirants jostling for the APC ticket it will soon be clear how many will remain in the party by the time the party fenced out other aspirants after one candidate has emerged.

The political ideology of a party ought to be a binding force that keeps politicians together in their chosen political party whether they lose out in an election or not. But because personal interest reign majesty over political ideology that doesn’t even exist in our party system in Nigeria, it becomes difficult to control desperate aspirants after every failed election.

After four years of Obaseki’s reign with tough political battle, all of the previous aspirants and new entrants are back to the trenches. Have things changed? Would Obaseki second coming be embraced by all Edo people? Or will Ize-Iyamu who was the opposition candidate in the 2016 election be given a nod? A better question will be the issue of zoning. Former Governor Lucky Igbenedion from Edo South governed for eight years. Comrade Governor from Edo North governed eight years. The tenure of former Governor Osunbor from Edo Central, was terminated by the Court ruling that brought in comrade Adams Oshiomhole from Edo North who completed a two term of eight years.

Incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki from South is almost completing his first four years. But the forces that brought him into the political scene seem to be against his return for a second term as the tradition had been. The implication is that, the political calculation would be sustained only if Obaseki is allowed to return for a second tenure. However a change of government will short change other zones in the existing zoning formula. This is because a new governor from Edo South will be a political suicide to Edo Central and Edo North. Those Senatorial district have to wait for another eight years before their zoning can return to them. Obviously, no new governor would do single term irrespective of the vows and covenant that he would sign before swearing in. Once in power, the language are never the same. Will the new governor be willing to do only one term? Did you remember our incumbent president was supposed to do one term? Will Edo North and Edo Central be willing to supervise Edo South for a straight 12 years as governor of Edo State? These questions have their answers tucked in the womb of time.

The more worrying fact about Edo election will emerge after the primary election of both the APC and the PDP. Politics is not totally predictable because, human behaviour is involved, there can be no direct cause and effect among the Political variables. One touching Concerned to me about the events that would be happening after the Edo State Primary Elections would be the high level of double allegiance that will characterise the political scene. Am not a prophet but a political scientist. The science of Politics will play out in Edo State, where it will become obvious that humans are not Scientific materials that can be predicted to produce same results consistently over time. There is no Circumcise hands in politics. No sacred hands that can’t fail in political predictions because human are changeable molecule unlike scientific elements.

Political reality has distinctive properties which make it unamendable to the forms of explanations used in the natural science. Nothing is new about conflict in politics in-fact, disagreement is the atmosphere that creates political phenomena. Politics itself is conflictual. That’s why politics does not necessarily aim at total elimination of conflicts. What is expected at this point of our politicking in Edo State, is for leaders to come together to define the limits of such conflicts and thereby create ways for mitigating it.

The people of Edo State should not be carried away by the ongoing Cloud-lessness political battle. They should not allow themselves to be manipulated to believe that 2020 Governorship election would be the most important election of their lifetime, which it would may well have been, but we can be certain that when the 2024 election rolls around it will also be the most important election of our lifetime. The news flash is that even in the year 2028 governorship election in Edo, it will be the same story all over again.
To expect to see an Edo that would have lesser conflict in the future is to wait forever. Can you remember the game that played out in Akwa- Ibom between Former Governor Akpabio and his own former Aide who is now the incumbent Governor? The deepening divide between our leaders are not purely for our interest. Because as a political science graduate and a Broadcaster am aware that the currency of politics is power and influence. How they get it is not as relevant as getting it. The masses are merely the guinea pig for these power hustlers, so it couldn’t have been for our collective good. Our founding fathers got it right, and within the frame work of our democracy there is room for leadership and courage and vision and all those good things that makes the old Bendel and Mid- Western region great and strong.

We depend on leaders with course and vision to keep us headed down the right road, but from time to time there’s vacuum. From time to time, we find ourselves in a state of such profound drift and i keep wondering whether we will ever see our way back to the way it was in the Bendel era because these days we a

The Political pendulum swings back and front in the heart beat of Nigeria. Currently, we are at the troubling end of its arc. I have spent all my adult life working with various level of politicians i can’t say have seen it all but i know when power is abused and when limits are exceeded. The Lucky Igbenedion and the PDP era veered Edo off a principled course of development, then Comrade Adams Oshiomhole surface as the Messiah to return the State back to the path of development as envisaged by the founding fathers but today we are forced to ask if the same Messiah is out to return the State back to the hands of those he had previously claimed it from. The opposition are definitely praying for this moment to come for the APC for them to leverage upon. We must not forget that it was this same kind of crisis that removed PDP from power.

We are yet to see a house that divide against itself that still remained the same. It is a question and not otherwise because how we’ve let things slip to where politics is no longer about doing good but about winning elections and destroying opponent is still tales. The stakes in our politics are always too high. Its all the same. Even in the Edo State Senatorial and House of assembly election we threw caution to the wind in defending our stands. I was a victim of that war of words. The tensions we created particularly in the media was needless. Of course, Political intrigue and smear tactics are nothing new, but we must all remember that we are first brothers before we became opponent.

Whether politics failed or succeed Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Comrade Philip Shaibu are from Etsako. Politics will not change their history. If we are conscious about this fact then we would discover that we are not fighting an enemy but ourselves. I have always work with politicians outside Edo State. My attraction to Edo my own state was the Unity and comradeship that existed between Adams Oshiomhole and Philip Shaibu as far back as 2007.

Today, the two people that got me interested in our politics are on the trenches. I weep as i write this and i passionately plead for both of them to reconcile again.I mean true brotherliness reconciliation, am not talking of political reconciliation but as it was from the beginning. Because Edo State and Afemai land will not come to an end with the current administration.

We ought to find some way to inject competition into a tired, rickety system and see if that doesn’t help. This is because competition drives everything in our society. But the missing link is that, we have turn competition into conflict. Conflict exist when two people wish to carry out act that are mutually inconsistent. Conflict is good and not bad because politics in its true sense of it is conflictual by nature. Once there is the cause for inter group relations, conflict becomes inevitable and peace must be given a chance.

Conflict is indeed not in the best interest of Anyone. Many things that Governor Obaseki did in his first year in office that the entire state commended for taking everything in their stride and worked like a charm with all Edo adoring his administration, my disappointment today, is that all of a sudden no one seem to see anything good about the same Obaseki anymore. We only sees his weaknesses and not his capacity anymore. The quality that made him the most preferred aspirant in 2016, it is amazing to note that those same quality that made him the most qualified are no more seen in him. “How has the gold become dim? the bible once ask. Shall the prey be taking away from the mighty? The Holy scripture also ask. But who will provide the answers to those soul touching questions? Because conflict is in favor of the strong and never the wise. But has the worst happened? Can we not still salvage this situation in Edo State? Is there no third party that can come to settle this crisis in Edo State? Have we run out of alternative options? Has Diplomacy failed? It is only when Diplomacy fail that war usually breakout. Diplomacy has not failed at this point because no one is patient to listen to the view of the other.

Indeed Edo State is soaked in tension and anxiety. The State has a fragmented political class. All aspirants are busy dissipating their energy on Obaseki and rarely addressed issues. First it was Obasek’s certificate, later it was his style of leadership, his neglect of party structures and many other issues reared their heads. The ongoing consultation by politicians is more about abuse and war of words with hire media mercenaries to do a media hatchet job against both the incumbent Governor and his deputy. They have been malicious, relentlessly uncouth and deliriously loquacious stigmatizing the Deputy Governor of Edo State as a Covid 19 patient an allegation they later regretted by tendering apology to the Radio and Tv station they raised alarm. What a primitive way of seeking relevance in a civilised society like ours? How do a pot confront his potter? Have we run out of human resources as we seem to have run out of ideas? Where else can a son who has been disowned by his parents who seeks to skin him lay his head? This was why Bob Nesta Marly said ‘’ You can fool some of the people all the time and all of the people some of the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time ” We can’t all have been wrong at the same time.” The truth is that it is the media handlers of this aspirants that has created unnecessary tension as if the State was on fire when there was no spark anywhere. Caution must start from the media handlers. We must not talk because others are talking. The sea of Edo political waters could appear to be calm but deep. This you won’t understand until you attempt to trouble the waters. The polity has been heated almost to a boiling point. It is as if some people are determined to waste the state away if they cannot have their way. So much hate and venom have been spewed in the mass media and social media, not by the aspirants themselves but by their mercenaries. We have witness governorship primaries in Edo State before, none has been divisive and hate filled as this ongoing campaign. The aspirants themselves are not the problem but their media Aide who are seeking relevance and undue favour from their pay masters. Only few went beyond decent and acceptable limits. In their struggle to undermine one another, real developmental issues that affect the people of our state were relegated while wars of words are given prominence. The polity will in the next few days will be turbo-charged.

Nigeria Politics has become a blood sport; its all about winning, and only little about governing. Good candidates are discouraged from even seeking office because they have not lived campaign perfect lives while weak candidates are propped up by party leaders as best and the brightest when in truth they might just be the least objectionable. This is true because in 2007 and 2011 Primary elections, PDP rigged out incumbent Senator Francis Alimikhena to give their ticket to candidates that they couldn’t stand up to defend publicly all in their bid to show and display influence. We need true and effective and inspiring leadership. For Edo to have a governor that can unite the state, we must all come together to resolve the ongoing differences before the primary election of the APC in June. This is because the State will be deeply divided should we continue in this manner to the general election. The issues are not unresolvable. The Governor of Edo State should as much as possible make the public move for reconciliation with his ex Boss. It is not an insult but statesmanship to steal the show. What is life without compromise. Every issue can be compromised i don’t believe that compromise is inevitable at this stage. We loss some and gain some. In politics the rule is to draw your friends close and our enemies closer.

To compromise doesn’t mean to sell out. It doesn’t mean that you sacrifice your principles. It doesn’t mean that you bend to every special interest other than your constituents. It means listening to the opinion of others and respecting those opinions and recognizing the value in searching for solutions built on consensus and yet it is within this great divide that we find many of the root ills of our Political system. We’ re all driven by our own impulses, and there are as many different justifications to seeking office as there are candidates doing the seeking, i observe that majority of the people doing the seeking for a career in politics do so with reasons that are noble and admirable. Its what happened next that got me so concerned. Business of government should be a value business just like any other. Politics is not winning. It’s doing the right thing. That to me is success. If you get re-elected, that’s great and if you don’t get reelected you can move on. There are worse things in life than losing an election. Life goes on. It is hard for God not to work when useable vessels are available. Politicians have to ask themselves how they want to be remembered, and to accept that they may likely won’t be remembered at all. What do you want that snapshot to be? This is so because most politicians have their footprint washed away by the next wave of politicians.

The Following are the Patriotic Edo Aspirants eyeing Obaseki’s job. These men are ready to lay eggs for Edo to move forward.

    ENGR. CHRIS OGIEMWOYI

He was a former Governorship aspirant with the incumbent Governor in the 2016 primary election. Though couldn’t secure the party’s ticket but remained in the party after the primary election. Ogiemwoyi is known for his integrity and moral uprightness. He’s mature and responsible to bear leadership burden based on his experience both in the oil industry and public service. He is not new in facing political pressure as a former minister of works. One thing going for him is his steadfastness. He is an ideal faithful party Stewart. He dedicated himself to his party the APC despite other available options. He is indeed a mature politician. If politics is a game where faithfulness counts then Ogiemwoyi is the man to look out for.

    DR. PIUS EGBERANMWEN ODUBU

A refined gentleman happily married. Immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State. He is a man who exhibited complete loyalty to Adams Oshiomhole while in office. He was a former Governorship aspirant in the 2016 race with the incumbent while he was still the deputy to former Governor Oshiomhole. Pius Odubu is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court. He also has B. A in Political Science. A thoughtful politician never envious of others and ready to suffer persecution than to compromise his believe. Though he had tough running battle with his former Boss over his ambition but Pius Odubu was never found wanting. He is never a desperate Politician and self satisfactory. His ambition set him against his former boss but there was indeed no law that stop him from aspiring. A careful monitor of his utterances withing the period shows that Dr Pius Odubu was a thoroughly breed politician. He was never seen in the media exchanging words with his Boss despite the cold war that characterised the last part of their tenure. He displayed Statesmanship when he abandoned several personal and official responsibility to join the incumbent Governor in campaigning during the main election. In a clime where humility and Service is acknowledge no doubt Pius Odubu would’ve been the man to beat.

    GENERAL CHARLES EHIGIE AIRHIAVBERE (Rtd)

Former Army general with skill and uncommon appetite for knowledge and self development. He spent better part of his life to serve the nation despite multiple options. He is service prone and result oriented. It’s a way of life for general Charles in displaying outstanding leadership quality inherent in him. These quality granted him speed in his service where he grow to become Director of studies, Nigeria Army School of Finance and administration. Deputy Director Commander CFO among many others. General Charles is a member of Several prestigious Professional bodies like : Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM) Institute of Certified Public Accountant of Nigeria (ICPN) etc. General Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd ) is an exposed and well travelled international resource person who has delivered lectures at various conferences on National issues and security matters. It is painful we are living in a society where intellectuals are assume not to have a campaign perfect life. If our society is concern about the future of this generation to wet the appetite of the Youth with creativity and education, then general Charles is the best hand among others to handle such sacred task.

    OSAGIE IZE-IYAMU

Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu is the most controversial Politician Edo State has ever produced. He is either quoted out of context or mention in every dispute. Any Political analysis since 1999 that didn’t carry the name Osagie Ize- Iyamu is yet a complete analysis. That’s the extent of his influence in Edo politics. Ize- Iyamu was former Chief of Staff and Secretary to the Edo State Government during the lucky Igbenedion era between 1999 and 2007 Under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) He was the Director General of Oshiomhole 2nd term Campaign Organization and Coordinator of the Goodluck Jonathan / Sambo Campaign Organization. A brief review of his profile shows a high level of inconsistency. He has deserved an award for decamping from one political party to the other. He was once a National Chairman South -South of the defunct Action congress of Nigeria (ACN). Defection is a major Characteristics of a core Nigeria Politician. Ize-Iyamu is definitely not a learner in politics. He is indeed one of the oldest and most consistent in Edo Political affairs. He has massive supporters and loyalist. He is tough but harmless. If the Political calculation is to handover the state to a core Politician that has taken politics as a career then Osagie Ize- Iyamu is the game master to consider.

    GODWIN OBASEKI

Immediately after taking the oath of office Governor Godwin Obaseki declared his intentions to hit the ground running in delivering on his campaign promise he made. I remembered he did promise to increase the revenue based of the State. Reduced the State dependence of crude oil. He did promise to make the State an economic hub through increase in small and medium scale business, Agricultural activities as well as technological environment for industry to thrive. This he said was possible through his police on ease of doing business. He did promise to expand the infrastructural based of the State to be able to carry skyscraper with a vow to build a robust human intellectual capacity. The creation of 200,000 employment and supporting the growth of over 20,000 micro small and medium enterprises with further creation of 50,000 associated jobs were prominent in his resolve among many others. How far was he able to achieve all he promise would play out in the forth coming primary election. If the lives of the people have been impacted the people would speak in his favour. The Man Goodwin Obaseki is a decendant of the famousely illustrious Obaseki families in Edo. He is well educated and attended school in New York where he obtained First degree and Masters. He has an impressive career spanning over 30 Years. He is a serious minded technocrate and an economic Manager per excellent. He has been accused of not playing politics but no one has ever accused him of corruption or mismanagement of the State economy. That is a key factor that may work for the return of Governor Godwin Obaseki. Those were also the qualities that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole saw in him that made him prefer Obaseki above all the above aspirants in the 2016 election. But what has change is left for historian to dig out. But if Edo State is interested in a corrupt free Governor who will not play politics with public interest, then Governor Godwin Obaseki is the best man for the job. Several quality made him to stand tall because i serve in his media team in 2016 but the much i know about him couldn’t be expressed for fear of biased.

There was a time in Nigeria when Nigerians actually enjoyed politics. The rules were clear. The players were matured men as Bisi would say, ‘who knew the worth of material wealth as against the value of humanity. They made their choices and each left their mark. These gentlemen have different kinds of fellowship from whom they drew strength. But today, rather than aspirants drawing courage and strength from their supporters, their supporters are engaged unguided utterances. This was why former President Jonathan emphasised that his ambition or the ambition of any politician is not worth the blood of any Nigerian. The Nigerian Politicians do not demand for blood, it is the Nigerian youth themselves that usually make their blood available for politicians in search for stomach infrastructure. Our youth must not forget that those, whom they are willing to die for; are not ready to die for themselves. And soon as they get into power, everything about them will change. Promises will change, acquaintance will change, language will change and all the weaknesses they are seeing on the incumbent will suddenly become inherent in them. That’s why there is series of falling out between close associates and friends as we have witness in Edo State and other parts of the country. If this is the trend, the Nigeria youth should bear in mind that they got no place in the scheme of things. The Edo people are familiar with all the aspirants in the state and they have enough information to consider in making their choices. They know those who are out for them and those who are coming to test their influence. For those who believe that money will determine the winner in the forth coming Edo Primary election, remember that some of the money that was shared in the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in the last 2016 primary election, some of the dollars and naira did not fall on fertile ground. Some may have fallen on stones and thorns and did not bear any fruit or else Obaseki would not have won in 2016 if their money fell on fertile soul; because those that were against Obaski in 2016 are more than those that are against him today. The game is just starting whether the four other aspirants will arrive at a consensus to battle the incumbent is still an unfolding game because the variable of Political Science are not as predictable as the natural sciences.

N700m fraud: Judge threatens to revoke bail condition for Ize-Iyamu, others

A Judge in the Federal High in Benin City, Justice M G Umar, has threatened to revoke the bail condition granted to Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Dan Orbih and three others if they were to play any antics to delay commencement of trial.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu and others were arraigned on an eight-count charge of conspiracy with themselves to commit money laundering to the tune of N700 million, an offence contrary to section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 as amended which is punishable under section 15(3) of the same Act.

The EFCC alleged that the defendants received the sum of N700 Million prior to the 2015 general elections, from former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Other defendants in the case are Former Deputy Governor, Mr. Lucky Imasuen, a former member representing Esan South East and Esan North East federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Tony Azigbemi, and one Efe Erimuoghae Anthony.

Justice Umar had issued the threat after listening to arguments of defendants seeking a six months adjournment because of ill health of Mr. Efe Anthony.

Mr Anthony had asked for the long till June for him to be able to stand for trial.

He reminded the Court that they have always been present and drew attention to three consecutive times they were in court and the court did not sit.

Lead Counsel to first defendant ,Mr Kingsley Obamojie , that of the Second defendant ,Professor Osas Izebhiuwa and that of the third and fourth defendants ,Mr Paschal Ogbome pleaded with the court to grant the application as the Anthony needed to be a bit healthy to appear in court for his defense.

Ugbome urged the court to be fair to all parties and pointed out the whereas it was inevitable for humans to be indispensable , they had actually striven very hard to ensure that the hearing commenced in earnest .

But the Prosecution Counsel, Mr L P Aso, said the defendants were unreasonable in their application for sixmonths adjournment.

Aso argued that the language of the application attempted to frustrate the prosecution through unwarranted delay .

Justice Umar who threatened to revoke the bail condition adjourned sitting to March 2nd for hearing and maintained that he would not tolerate any form of delay in the prosecution.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had said the accused were alleged to have made cash payment of N60,650,000 to one Henry Tenebe of Estako West Local Government Area and N61,647,000 to one Momoh Andrew Ojo of Akoko-Edo without going through a financial institution.

In count five, six and seven, they were alleged to have made cash payment of N83,473,000, N125,993,000 and N105,000,000 to Deacon Ezekiel Egharevba, Thomas Aroko and Scott Osagiede without going through a financial institution.

  • Attack on Edo APC chieftain: Caution your men, Ize-Iyamu warns Obaseki

All Progressive Congress (APC), governorship aspirant, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu on Tuesday blamed Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki for the attack on the house of Secretary of the APC , Edo , Mr. Lawrence Okah by suspected assailants.

Ize-Iyamu, who was at the scene of the incident on a solidarity visit, warned Obaseki to call his men to order.

He cautioned that Edo should not be turned to a war zone.

Ize-Iyamu, who called the attention of the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, and the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to the attacks in Edo State, wondered why no arrest had been made.

“Since the beginning of these series of attacks on our members in the state, we are surprised that no arrest has been. Will the police say they don’t know about it? We know that if the police want to do their jobs they can do it perfectly, so we are calling on them to do their jobs and save our lives,” he said.

  • ‘Ize-Iyamu may lose C of O for moving APC mega rally to his residence’ – Edo Govt

Edo State Government has warned that any private residence used for the purported rally of the All Progressives Congress in Edo state will have its certificate of occupancy revoked.

However, in sharp contrast with the state’s directives, the organisers of the mega rally had moved the event to the private residence of the 2016 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Pastor Osagie Iye-Iyamu along Ugbor-Amagba road in Benin City.

With this development, there is a likelihood that Ize-Iyamu may lose his C of O for disobeying the order by the state government.

Recall that Edo State Government issued the directive in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie.

The statement partly reads, “having received security advice from the office of the Inspector General of Police. The state government places a total and complete ban on any political rallies, demonstrations or processions in any part of the state.”

He said security agencies are expected to deal firmly with all persons no matter how highly-placed who will act in breach of the directive.

Ogie advised all parents and guardians to also advise their children and wards not to be allowed to be used by anyone as cannon-fodder in the aid of misguided political ambition and ego of people whose children reside and school abroad.

Ize-Iyamu’s defection: How the event happened

The rally at Ize-Iyamu’s residence was attended by APC chieftains loyal to Oshiomhole but Oshiomhole was absent at the rally.

Police sources said Oshiomhole was ‘technically’ kept under house arrest as the police refused to allow him go to the rally.
Imuse formally welcomed Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu into the party and presented him and his supporters with a broom, which is the APC party symbol.

Imuse stated that the coming of Ize-Iyamu and his supporters from the 18 local government areas would add value to the party.

” We are here to celebrate the homecoming of our brothers and sisters from the PDP who have come to add value to our party; not only to add value, they are coming to make our party grow from strength to strength so that we can win at all levels”.

Addressing that rally, Pastor Ize-Iyamu debunked rumours that he was joining the APC to make trouble.

He said he has already joined the APC as required by party regulations at his Ugboko ward in Orhionnwon Local Government Area.

According to him, “For those who are in doubt, the moment I made up my mind to join the APC, I went to my ward and I am proud to say I have registered in Ugboko ward in Orhionmwon local government area”.

“By the grace of God, APC will grow from strength to strength. We want to extend hand of peace. We are not here (APC) to fight anyone. We have come to be your friends.”

Some chieftains that attended were Hon Pally Iriase, Raza Bello-Osagie, Tony Omoaghe, Victor Edoror, Dr. Pius Odubu amongst others.

  • Defection: APC shifts mega rally to Ize-Iyamu’s residence

Defection: APC shifts mega rally to Ize-Iyamu’s residence

The controversial defection of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to the All Progressives Congress (APC), will go ahead as planned, but at a different venue.

The much talked-about Ize-Iyamu’s defection to the APC with hundreds of his associates, has generated more than enough controversy, confusion and chaotic atmosphere in the ancient city of Benin in the last few weeks.

A faction of the party, loyal to the nation chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, had arranged a mega rally to hold at Garrick Memorial School, Ekehuan Road, in Benin, at which Ize-Iyamu and his associates would be received.

But as at Thursday night, it was no longer certain if the rally will still hold or not, following the release of two different letters from the office of the Inspector-General of Police, Abubakar Adamu Mohammed.

One of the letters which was addressed to Adams Oshiomhole, and signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the IGP, ACP Idowu Owohunwa, expressed approval for request for police deployment for security at the rally.

The second letter titled Re: Request to stop the purported All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Benin city, Edo State, and addressed to the State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, was also signed by ACP Owohunwa.

“In cognisance of the security consequences of the proposed mega rally, I am to confirm that the Inspector-General of Police has directed the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, to emplace appropriate security framework that is directed at suspending the rally until further notice,” the letter said.

Hundreds of youths believed to be members of the APC loyal to Godwin Obaseki, also created tension in the state capital on Thursday, as they set bonfires at several spots on the two sides of the busy Airport Road.

Several persons were reported wounded and we’re hospitalised, even as unconfirmed sources had it that two vehicles were burnt down in a reprisal attack by loyalists of Oshiomhole.

As at Friday morning, Garrick Memorial School grounds were empty, except of few police operatives that were roaming the large school field, with the stage still intact.

It was however gathered that the venue has been shifted to the house of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, where the reception will now take place.

An aide of the former governorship candidate of the PDP in Edo state who did not want to be named insisted that the event will hold, not minding the IGP’s order stopping the rally.

“Yes, we are aware of the order from the office of the IGP. But that will not stop the defection of Ize-Iyamu and thousands of his followers.

“The IGP’s order said we should not meet at Garrick Memorial School, but it did not say that we should not meet inside his house. At least we don’t need his approval for that.

“The event is not a hidden one, it will be beamed life on national television channels,” the source added.

As at the time of filing this report, the house of Ize-Iyamu is a beehive of activities in preparation for the defection.

  • Again, Obaseki, Oshiomhole clash over planned rally for Ize-Iyamu, supporters

Again, Obaseki, Oshiomhole clash over planned rally for Ize-Iyamu, supporters

There is anxiety in Benin City, the Edo State capital, over Friday’s planned rally to receive defectors into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

National Chairman of the APC Adams Oshiomhole is expected to welcome the former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mr. Osagie Ize-Iyamu and his supporters into the party.

But Governor Godwin Obaseki, elected on the ticket of the party, but who is estranged with Oshiomhole, said on Tuesday he is not aware of any rally by his party on Friday. He warned against a breakdown of law and order.

Obaseki on Tuesday travelled with President Muhammadu Buhari to Egypt on official assignment from which they will not return until Friday.

Ize-Iyamu contested the governorship poll on the platform of the PDP against Obaseki in 2016.

Jingles have been running on radio and television stations inviting members of the public to the rally.

Denied knowledge of any APC rally in the state after the security meeting with heads of security agencies in the state, Obaseki said he has checked with the state APC secretariat and the party had not announced officially that there would be a rally.

According to him, issues of public safety were reviewed at the security meeting, particularly in relation to the Yuletide season.

He said: “The issue of public safety is a major concern to us as a government and this being the last Security Council meeting for the year; we had to put up measures in place to tackle security challenges.”

Chairman of the APC in Edo, Anselm Ojezua, also said the party had directed its members to stay away from the rally.

Ojezua, who described the planned rally as “provocative and capable of disrupting the peace” in the state, said it was not the APC national body that should inform the state organs about any rally.

He said: “I am not aware of any rally in Edo. We don’t know anything about it. Is it not absurd that the governor of the state is not aware? We are not a party to it and it must not be held in our name.”

The party chairman said in a statement: “The attention of the party has been drawn to information being circulated by some unauthorised people to the effect that the APC in the state is receiving some new members on Friday, December 13, 2019, at Garrick Memorial School, Ekenwan Road, Benin City.

“Neither the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, who is the leader of the APC in Edo State, nor other leaders of the party is aware of the purported declaration rally. It is, therefore, highly provocative and capable of creating breach of peace.

“We urge members of the APC in the state not to have anything to do with the event. The organisers of that event are sufficiently seasoned and experienced as politicians to know the proper procedure and tradition usually attendant to this sort of event.”

But the factional chairman of Edo APC, Col David Imuse, said Edo cannot have two chairmen as there can only be one party chairman in the state.

He said: “As at today, the chairman is Col. David Imuse (rtd). The next line of action is to strengthen the party for the challenges ahead and win future elections.

“We are not at a press war with anybody. The party leadership took a decision and the national headquarters affirmed that decision. So, whatever we do here is subject to ratification by Abuja; the party took a decision here and it was affirmed in Abuja.

“We had a NEC meeting, it was ratified and affirmed. We had the Southsouth leaders meeting it was affirmed and in the meeting of all the chairmen of APC nationwide, it was affirmed.”

“I don’t dwell on illegality. I am a highly focused person so right now the task before us is how to fortified party. Right now we are preparing for the reception of our brothers who are coming back home to strengthen the party.”

Also on Tuesday, the suspended secretary of the party in the state, Mr. Lawrence Okah, raised the alarm over alleged plans by the government to recruit thugs from Kogi and Ekiti states to disrupt the planned rally.

Okah claimed that “over 20,000 leaders of the PDP across the 18 local government areas in the state, led by Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, would be received into the APC by Oshiomhole and other leaders of the APC across the country.”

He said: “We are raising this alarm so that the world will know that governor Obaseki intends to unleash mayhem on APC members in Edo state after he had perfected plans to join the PDP.

“We have informed him of the scheduled rally. His deputy has also been informed but they have vowed to disrupt any event that will boost the strength of the APC in Edo state. This claim that cultists are invading the state is arrant nonsense. We are holding APC rally and we have accordingly informed all relevant authorities.

“We appeal to the Inspector-General of Police, the Edo State Police Commissioner and the DSS to provide security to our members on that day. We use this opportunity to appeal to the governor to toe the path of peace and avoid violence because no blood of any Edo man is worth the ambition of any body.

“We urged security agents to be at alert because since the preparation for this rally, our members are being harassed while many are being threatened and beaten across the state.”

Special Adviser to Governor on Parliamentary Matters, Kabiru Adjoto, denied the allegation of plans to import thugs into to the state.

Adjoto said: “It is unfortunate that such statement will come from Chief Lawrence Okah who is somebody I respect so much and I will be shocked if he actually said so. I am a man of peace, I am a stakeholder in this state and the governor is committed to absolute peace in the state.

“He recently held a security meeting where he preached peace, especially in this Yuletide season for peace in the state and we are committed to that. I am a man of peace and throughout my time as Speaker in the state, we maintained the peace. If actually Chief Okah made this allegation against me, I will seek redress.”

  • PDP National Chairmanship: Dokpesi woos Igbinedion, Ibori, Ize-Iyamu

PDP National Chairmanship: Dokpesi woos Igbinedion, Ibori, Ize-Iyamu

Former Governor of Delta, Chief James Ibori, on Friday described Chief Raymond Dokpesi as a passionate loyalist of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying he had toiled for the party.

Ibori said in Oghara when he received Dokpesi, a national chairmanship aspirant of the party, that the aspirant was enjoying huge confidence of party members because of his record and commitment.

He pledged to give necessary support to the aspiration and prayed that God would guide him.

Earlier, Dokpesi had told the former governor that his visit was to solicit support for his aspiration, saying that Ibori was a stakeholder in the PDP.

In Benin, Edo, Dokpesi visited Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, who said that the aspirant was a dogged democrat and fighter for enthronement of internal democracy and equity in the party.

Similarly, a chieftain of PDP in the state, Mr Ben Edo-Osagie, described Dokpesi as a “brave man with credibility”, adding that in spite of all intimidations, he remained in the party and “gave it his all”.

“Credibility and total alliance is what is needed at this stage to rebuild the PDP. This party requires re-branding, re-packaging and re-focusing to win the 2019 general elections.

“I believe that Dokpesi is the foremost dynamic person to lead the PDP to victory in 2019,” Edo-Osagie said.

Also receiving the aspirant, PDP candidate in the 2017 governorship election in Edo, Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu, said Dokpesi was a party leader that the state was always proud of.

He said that the man had paid his dues in any area required to be PDP’s national chairman.

Ize-Iyamu assured that as a son of Edo, the party members in the state would pull resources to support Dokpesi, adding that it was wrong for anybody to insinuate that he was or would be rejected in his home.

He commended the aspirant for his matured and peaceful campaigns, adding that he had brought flamboyance to the race to the chairmanship race.

He appealed to all the aspirants not to be hostile in their campaigns,”

Dokpesi called for dedication of leaders and members to ensure stability in the party, saying that cohesion was needed for the party to regain power at the national level.

He said that had been to the northern part of the country and the South-West for campaign, and said that the enthusiasm of members for strengthening of the party was impressive.

Dokpesi urged the leaders to support his ambition, pledging that PDP’s credibility and acceptability by most Nigerians would be restored if he was elected.

  • Ize-Iyamu finally concedes victory to Obaseki, assures him of support

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2016 Governorship election in Edo, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has assured Governor Godwin Obaseki of his support as the Supreme Court on Monday upheld his victory as the duly elected governor of the state.

The PDP stalwart congratulated his former rival in a statement personally signed by him.

He said, “Today, the Supreme Court has by its judgment brought to an end our struggle for the office of the governor of Edo State which began on 28 September 2016.

“I accept in good faith this decision of the highest court of our country, which affirms Mr. Godwin Obaseki as the Governor of Edo State. I, therefore, congratulate Mr. Godwin Obaseki and assure him of my goodwill.

“I also want to use this opportunity to thank all our supporters and party loyalists for their immense support for our struggle right from the time of the election to this day that it ended at the Supreme Court.

“Let me assure them of my acknowledgment of their various sacrifices and promise that I will always be there for them.

“I thank all Edo people who have been part of our struggle all the way. In our various ways, we should keep the fire burning in the quest for an Edo State of our dreams.”

Ize-Iyamu, alongside the PDP, had challenged the victory of Obaseki, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the September 2016 poll over electoral irregularities.

However, the Edo Election Petition Tribunal in April dismissed the petition for lack of merit, after which the case moved to the appellate court.

In June, the Appeal Court upheld Obaseki’s victory at the poll, but the PDP candidate proceeded to the apex court.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that at the Supreme Court on Monday, the seven judges, in a unanimous decision, dismissed Ize-Iyamu’s case for lack of merit, putting an end to the governorship tussle between both parties and candidates.
