Reactions as ex Twitter founder Jack Dorsey locked out of X account

The co-founder and former Twitter, Jack Dorsey has been locked out of his  X account.

The news broke on Wednesday night, when Dorsey via Primal, an alternative social media network, stated that his X account had been restricted with an 11-hour lockout period remaining as of that date.

“We have determined that you have violated the X rules, so you’ll need to wait some time before using X again.

“You’ll be able to unlock your account in: 11 hours and 3 minutes,” Jack shared on Primal.

TheNewsGuru gathered that Dorsey’s lockout has sparked reactions  among X users, though the platform has provided no official explanation.

Reacting X user Patriot Lady @angelwoman501 tweeted, “Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter, has been locked out of his X.

“How does it feel, Jack? We will never forget how you were taking millions from Joe Biden to cancel conservatives. Were you on the USAID payroll as well? Jack, you look terrible.”

Another user, Oli London @olilondontv, reacted, saying, “Under Dorsey’s Twitter leadership, thousands of conservatives had their accounts suspended.”

An X account Tiffany Fong @tiffanyfong_ took a lighter tack: “Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter, has been thrown in 𝕏 jail .”

Western Decline @westerndecline_ replied to a tweet by Dogedesigner, “For all the accounts that were wrongfully suspended while he was the CEO of Twitter… I don’t feel an ounce of sympathy for the guy.”

As of now, X has not released a statement addressing the situation. Dorsey, who also co-founded Block Inc., has yet to provide further updates on the matter via Primal or other channels.

In 2021, Dorsey stepped down as Twitter’s CEO and has remained an influential figure in the tech world. His unexpected account restriction has raised eyebrows, particularly given his foundational role in building the platform that X evolved from.

  • Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey quits Instagram

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey quits Instagram

Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey on Friday (August 18) said that he had deleted his Instagram account.

Dorsey made the announcement about quitting Instagram in a post on decentralised social media Nostr. Dorsey said that he was deleting the account after years of non-use.

“Don’t know why it took me so long,” he wrote. “I think I was in the first 10 accounts on the platform, and one of the first angel investors. [Instagram co-founder] Kevin [Systrom] was our intern at Odeo,” noted Dorsey in his post. (Odeo was the organisation founded in 2005 by Noah Glass and Evan Williams, that later reformed as the Obvious Corporation which ended up becoming the birthplace of Twitter.)

He also said that he stopped using the app after it was acquired by Facebook (now Meta).

Dorsey and Systrom had been friends since they were working together at Odeo. At one point, Twitter even tried acquiring Instagram. But the attempt was rejected. Dorsey found out later that Instagram was being sold to Facebook for USD 1 billion. He then stopped using Instagram reportedly because he was hurt that Systrom didn’t tell him directly.

Dorsey hasn’t posted anything on Instagram since April 9, 2012. It has been reported in media that it was on that day that Dorsey found out that Instagram was acquired by Facebook.

Dorsey quitting Instagram has come at a time when the photo-sharing app is competing with Twitter through its own app Threads.

The former Twitter CEO has been backing other social media networks after and even during he was at Twitter. He incubated Bluesky while serving as Twitter’s CEO. Bluesky said last year that it received USD 13 million from Twitter to kickstart its research and development (R&D).

Dorsey has also put his weight behind Nostr, the decentralised network protocol. He donated about USD 245,000 in bitcoin. He regularly posts on Nostr.

Twitter is now owned by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk who has chosen to rebrand it as ‘X’. The huge changes, including massive job cuts, Musk made in Twitter had initially scared the markets as well as advertisers. Questions on stability and even future of the platform were raised.

  • Twitter to permanently suspend impersonator accounts

Twitter to permanently suspend impersonator accounts

Twitter will permanently suspend users who impersonate authentic accounts on the social media platform, new owner Elon Musk has revealed.

“Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying ‘parody’ will be permanently suspended,” Musk tweeted.

“Previously, we issued a warning before suspension, but now that we are rolling out widespread verification, there will be no warning.”

Musk also said any name change at all will cause temporary loss of the verified checkmark.

The move came after the platform allegedly suspended users who had changed their user names to Elon Musk, including U.S. comedian Kathy Griffin and actor Rich Sommer.

After Griffin’s suspension, Musk tweeted that she had been banned “for impersonating a comedian.”

“But if she really wants her account back, she can have it for eight U.S. dollars,” he wrote.

Musk completed his 44-billion-dollar takeover of the platform last week, immediately cutting the workforce and implementing a monthly subscription fee for users to be verified on the platform.

Why I chose Elon Musk for Twitter – Jack Dorsey

Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and co-founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey has hailed Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform and opened up on his decision on Musk.

Reacting to the $44 billion deal, Dorsey tweeted, “In principle, I don’t believe anyone should own or run Twitter. It wants to be a public good at a protocol level, not a company. Solving the problem of it being a company, however, Elon is the singular solution I trust. I trust his mission to extend the light of consciousness.

“Elon’s goal of creating a platform that is “maximally trusted and broadly inclusive” is the right one. This is also #paraga’s goal, and why I chose him. Thank you both for getting the company out of an impossible situation. This is the right path…I believe it with all my heart.

“I’m so happy Twitter will continue to serve the public conversation. Around the world, and into the stars!”

Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey considers stepping down

Twitter Inc Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey will step down from his role and a successor has been lined up, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The company’s board has been preparing for Dorsey’s departure since last year, the source said.

The news comes as Twitter has accelerated the pace of its product innovation over the past year to compete with social media rivals such as Facebook Inc and TikTok, and to reach its goal of doubling annual revenue by 2023.

Twitter was not immediately available for comment.

Shares of the microblogging platform surged 9% in early trading, while those of digital payments firm Square Inc, of which Dorsey is also chief executive, were up 3%.

Trading in the shares was then suspended ahead of an expected announcement.

In his latest tweet on Nov. 28, Dorsey said: “I love twitter”. The “likes” on that tweet surged to more than 54,000 on Monday.

CNBC was first to report Dorsey’s move.

In early 2020, Dorsey faced calls from Elliott Management Corp to step down, after the hedge fund argued THAT he was paying too little attention to Twitter while also running payments processing company Square Inc.

Dorsey fended off the pressure by giving Elliott and its ally, buyout firm Silver Lake Partners, seats on Twitter’s board.

  • FG reveals more details for suspending Twitter

FG reveals more details for suspending Twitter

The Federal Government has justified its action of indefinite suspension of Twitter by giving insights into the several attempts by the microblogging and social networking site to destabilise the country.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, gave the details on Friday when he featured on a live programme of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), `Good Morning Nigeria’.

During the programme, the minister said that Twitter had become a platform of choice for separatists to carry out their agenda.

Specifically, the minister said the platform was used consistently to promote activities that would lead to the collapse of the country.

He said separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who stays comfortably in Europe, had been using Twitter to direct people to attack the symbols of Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The minister said Kanu, the leader of outlawed Independent People of Biafrsa (IPOB), used that platform to direct his supporters to attack policemen, military men, barracks and INEC offices among others.

“Before its suspension, we made several pleas to them to remove the tweets where Nigeria is described as a zoo where all of us are described as monkeys.

“We also pleaded to Twitter to delete the tweet where he said that if a Nigerian soldier enters into Biafra, it is death,” he said.

” Twitter, however, said that those tweets did not offend their own rules.

“It gets out of hand when attacks on police and military formations, police and army officers became unabated and we said at this point, we will need to suspend their operations,’’ he said

Mohammed added that the mission of Twitter and its founder, Jack Dorsey, was suspect as they sponsored the EndSARS protest which almost destabilised the country and led to the death of many, including destruction of public and private property.

He said when he asserted that Twitter funded the EndSARS protest, his position was corroborated by the fact checks made by an online media outfit, ‘The Cable’.

“The online media concluded that on Oct. 14, 2020, Dorsey actually retweeted some of the posts by some of the coalitions supporting the EndSARS protest.

“On the same day, he launched a fundraising asking people to donate via Bitcoins.

“On Oct. 16, 2020, Dorsey launched another Emoji to make the EndSARS protest visible on the microblogging site.

“On Oct, 20, 2020, he retweeted the tweets of some foreign and local supporters of EndSARS,’’ he said.

The minister said his claims were proven rightly by the investigations of the Cable, including the fact that Twitter founder solicited donations to support EndSARS.

“If you ask people to donate money via bitcoins for EndSARS protesters then you are vicariously liable for whatever is the outcome of the protest.

“We have forgotten that EndSARS led to the loss of lives, including 37 policemen, six soldiers, 57 civilians while property worth billions of naira were destroyed.

“164 police vehicles and 134 police stations were razed to the ground, 265 private corporate organisation were looted while 243 public property were looted.

“81 warehouses were looted and we are now saying we don’t have a reason to ban twitter,’’ he said.

The minister said it was unfair to conclude that the operation of Twitter was suspended indefinitely because it deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet.

He said the government was unambiguous that the action was taken because the platform was being used to promote the views of those who want the country to be divided.

On the timing of the suspension, the minister said the government had the right to determine when and where to make pronouncement on policy and action affecting the corporate existence of the country.

  • Why Twitter shunned Nigeria to locate it’s Africa HQ in Ghana

Why Twitter shunned Nigeria to locate it’s Africa HQ in Ghana

American microblogging and social networking service based in San Francisco, California has opened its first office in Africa, it’s headquarters on the African continent, shunning Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Twitter announced opening its first office on the African continent on Monday, after laying the foundation through partnerships with a Nigerian firm and three others in Kenya and Ghana.

In a statement by Kayvon Beykpour, Product Lead, Twitter and Co-Founder, Periscope, a e Uche Adegbite, Director, Product Management, Global Markets, Twitter announced Ghana as it’s headquarters for Africa operations, while also giving reasons for the choice of Ghana.

“Today, in line with our growth strategy, we’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana. As a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate.

“Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa.

“Whenever we enter new markets, we work hard to ensure that we are not just investing in the talent that we hire, but also investing in local communities and the social fabric that supports them.

“We have already laid foundations through partnerships with Amref Health Africa in Kenya, Afrochella in Ghana, Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) in Nigeria, and The HackLab Foundation in Ghana.

“As part of our long-term commitment to the region, we’ll continue to explore compelling ways we can use the positive power of Twitter to strengthen our communities through employee engagement, platform activation, and corporate giving.

“We still have much to learn but we are excited to listen, learn, and engage. Public conversation is essential to solving problems, building shared ideas, and pushing us all forward together. We can’t wait for the next step on that journey,” Twitter stated.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed excitement over the choice of Ghana as Twitter’s HQ on the African continent.

Quoting a tweet shared by Jack Dorsey, Twitter founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Akufo-Addo tweeted: “The choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is EXCELLENT news.

“Gov’t and Ghanaians welcome very much this announcement and the confidence reposed in our country.

“As I indicated to @Jack in our virtual meeting of 7th April 2021, this is the start of a beautiful partnership between Twitter and Ghana, which is critical for the dev’t of Ghana’s hugely important tech sector.

“These are exciting times to be in, and to do business in Ghana”.

  • Trump ban was right but sets dangerous precedent – Twitter chief

Trump ban was right but sets dangerous precedent – Twitter chief

Twitter’s chief executive Jack Dorsey on Wednesday defended the platform’s decision to suspend U.S. President Donald Trump’s account indefinitely, but also said it sets a dangerous precedent.

Twitter banned the outgoing president in the wake of the attack on the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob last week.

“I do not celebrate or feel pride in our having to ban @realDonaldTrump from Twitter, or how we got here. After a clear warning we’d take this action, we made a decision with the best information we had based on threats to physical safety both on and off Twitter,” Dorsey wrote in a Twitter thread.

However, he also said he feels turning to a ban ultimately shows a failure by Twitter to promote healthy conversation.

“Having to take these actions fragment the public conversation. They divide us.

“They limit the potential for clarification, redemption, and learning and sets a precedent I feel is dangerous: the power an individual or corporation has over a part of the global public conversation,” Dorsey wrote.

Facebook has also banned Trump from using his accounts, citing his intent to “undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power.”

Trump has complained that social media platforms are exercising censorship and suggested he may launch a competing platform.

Amazon had earlier on Wednesday defended its decision to kick the social network Parler from its cloud servers, saying the platform popular with Trump’s supporters failed to delete threats of violence.

Some people used Parler to spread messages promoting insurrection and to plan for last Wednesday’s deadly invasion of the U.S. Capitol.

Amazon Web Services booted social network Parler on Monday in a move that effectively removed it from the internet.

The conservative-friendly platform then filed a lawsuit in a Seattle federal court that demanded Amazon keep Parler on its service.

Parler argued Amazon was driven by “political animus” and the decision was “the equivalent of pulling the plug on a hospital patient on life support. It will kill Parler’s business – at the very time it is set to skyrocket.”

Amazon hit back in its response on Tuesday, saying the case “is not about suppressing speech or stifling viewpoints.”

“This case is about Parler’s demonstrated unwillingness and inability to remove from the servers of Amazon Web Services content that threatens the public safety, such as by inciting and planning the rape, torture, and assassination of named public officials and private citizens.”

Amazon then listed more than a dozen examples from Parler users, including: “After the firing squads are done with the politicians the teachers are next” and “We are going to fight in a civil War on Jan. 20th, Form MILITIAS now and acquire targets.”

BREAKING: FG petitioned to shut down Twitter in Nigeria [VIDEO]

Adamu Garba, a former presidential aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) has petitioned the Federal Government of Nigeria to shut down Twitter, stopping the microblogging platform from operating in any part of the country.

The former APC presidential aspirant, who joined the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in the petition, also asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to slam a USD1 billion fine on the microblogging platform for what he said is compensation for loss of lives and properties, and for convenience.

He accused Jack Dorsey, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Twitter in the petition obtained by TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) of gross abuse of privilege, saying the Twitter CEO used his platform to instigate a protest he said has now turned into a breakdown of law and order in Nigeria.

“Here’s your motion of notice, a fine of $1Bn dollars in favour of Federal Republic of Nigeria, as a compensation for lost of lives, properties & convenience as a result [of] your active support for funding of #EndSARS after the issues is been attended to by the Government.

“You have violated the international principles of nationhood & democracy, by meddling into our local affairs, knowing fully well that these is capable of toppling the democratically elected government of the day, slowing us down from progress on our hard earned democracy journey.

“I trust that the Federal High Court of Nigeria will serve you the motion accordingly. You should get ready and pay the fine as a compensation once you receive the motion accordingly. See you in court Thank you,” Adamu Garba posted via Twitter on Tuesday.

Also joined in the petition are the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Attorney General of the Federation, National Security Adviser, Inspector General of Police, Director-General, Department of State Security Services, the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the #EndSARS protesters.

IT expert Adamu Garba threatens to sue Twitter CEO Dorsey over #EndSARS

Chief executive officer of IT firm IPI Group Adamu Garba has condemned Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey for lending his voice to the #EndSARS campaign in Nigeria.

Mr Dorsey had urged the public in a tweet on Wednesday night to make donations via Bitcoin in support of the cause which has seen many Nigerians take to the streets in protest.

However, Mr Garba, a former presidential aspirant, in a Twitter thread said Dorsey should not participate in stoking turmoil in Nigeria, warning the Twitter executive to stay away from Nigerian politics.

He wrote: “Dear @jack, It’ll do you a lot more good if you stay away from Nigerian Politics. You should know that the so-called #EndSARS protest have transformed into political agitation, capable of breaking law & order in our country. You should not be a moral & financial sponsor to this.

“This is Nigeria, most of the demands initially presented was attended to by the responsible authorities. SARS no longer exist in this country.

“Your support for a disbanded entity was a needless interference. We cannot allow killings again in Nigeria in the name of protests.

“I understand that this may play well to your business, you have more content, more people & more activity on your platform, but to us is about life, peace & security of our dear Country, we cannot allow you to be part of the people sponsoring disorder. We need peace & prosperity.

“I can see you are even sharing a link for people to donate money for this protest, an event capable of escalation beyond our already overstretched security management.

“If this protest continued to evolved into disorder (hopefully not). As a Nigerian citizen, we’ll meet in court.”

As expected, the #EndSARS protesters have condemned Adamu over his comments.
