  • Creators of Nigeria’s first lesbian movie, ‘Ife’ risk detention ahead of release

Creators of Nigeria’s first lesbian movie, ‘Ife’ risk detention ahead of release

The producers of controversial Nigerian flick, Pamela Adie and Uyaiedu Ikpe-Etim, two may be jailed if they go ahead with their scheduled release of ‘Ife’, Nigeria’s first lesbian movie.

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) had fervently refused to approve the movie for distribution, explaining that its content violates the country’s extant law on homosexuality.

Homosexuality is prohibited by law in Nigeria and offenders could bag 14-year sentence if convicted.

Amid the disapproval, Adie had last month said the controversial film will be released this year via an online platform.

It is understood that the movie will be screened privately in Lagos by the end of the month, while its international premiere is scheduled for October in Canada.

In a chat with BBC, Adebayo Thomas, NFVCB director, said the board will prosecute the film’s producers if they eventually release the movie without the board’s approval.

“There’s a standing law that prohibits homosexuality, either in practice or in a movie or even in a theatre or on stage. If it’s content from Nigeria, it has to be censored,” he said

Thomas stated that the board has the right to censor the movie, regardless of the platform it is released, “as long as it’s Nigerian content and it’s telling a Nigerian story.”

“If it did not pass through NFVCB and it is released, the filmmakers will be prosecuted according to the law,” he added.

The NFVCB boss also promised to pull down the film if eventually released, noting that the board had already partnered with several online platforms including Google and YouTube.

“As long as it’s Nigerian content, we will pull it down because we have collaborations with Google, YouTube and other key players,” he said.

Man jailed 21 years for releasing woman’s nude photos

The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja on Friday sentenced one Paul Adesanya to 21 years’ imprisonment for defrauding an American-based woman, Mrs Oluwatoyin Akinwole, of the sum of N36.7m.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission also told Justice Mojisola Dada that Adesanya posted Akinwole’s nude pictures on social media, and thereafter reported that she committed suicide by jumping over the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, in 2017.

The prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, Samuel Daji, said Adesanya acted contrary to sections 1(1) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud Act; as well as sections 278 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

In her judgment on Friday, Justice Dada convicted Adesanya of the three counts filed against him by the EFCC.

The judge said she was satisfied that the prosecution proved the charges beyond reasonable doubts.

“I hereby sentence you to 14 years’ imprisonment on counts one and two, from the date of arraignment. These sentences are to run concurrently.

“On count three, for stealing, the convict is sentenced to seven years in prison,” the judge held.

The prosecutor thanked the judge for “a well-considered judgment.”

  • Man Utd captain Maguire to avoid jail time

It is highly unlikely Manchester United captain Harry Maguire will serve jail-time in Greece, according to Mykonos lawyer.

Maguire spent two nights in police custody after a fight broke out on the Greek island of Mykonos.

The 28-year-old has denied allegations of assault, disobedience and bribery during the incident, in which a police officer was allegedly assaulted.

According to Zannis Panayotakopoulos, a lawyer in Mykonos, via Sky Sports, the Englishman will not be found guilty of any serious offences.

“Bribes are very serious crimes in Greece,” said Zannis.

“But I believe that it has become a misdemeanour. The highest sentence can be five years imprisonment and a fine.

“But most of these crimes have big and heavy fines and definitely not prison time. In Greece, in our legal system, we have second chances.”

  • UK Court jails Nigeria’s oil tycoon for contempt

UK Court jails Nigeria’s oil tycoon for contempt

A United Kingdom Court has jailed the Chief Executive Officer of Rahamaniyya Oil and Gas Limited, Abdulrahman Bashir, after he was found guilty of breaching multiple orders of the court in a pending suit instituted by Sahara Energy Resources Limited.

Justice Butcher of England and Wales High Court handed a 10-month jail sentence to the oil mogul, and has ordered him to comply with requests for the release of 6,400.69 metric tonnes of gas oil to Sahara Energy Resource Ltd. or its agent from Rahamaniyya Oil and Gas Ltd. This was in line with the deal Ultimate Oil and Gas, the trading arm of Rahamaniyya Oil in the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), entered into with Sahara Energy in 2018. In the signed contract, Ultimate Oil and Gas agreed to buy, and Sahara agreed to sell 15,000 metric tonnes in the Vacuum of Gas Oil.

A Collateral Management Agreement (CMA) containing a London arbitration clause was entered into on July 8, 2018 between the two parties and it was further learnt that Rahamaniyya agreed to store the gas oil at its terminal pending payment by Ultimate. Sahara, it would be recalled, delivered a total of 14,967.159 metric tonnes of gas oil to Rahamaniyya’s terminal in Nigeria and also issued invoices for the gas oil on October 26, 2018 for $10,760,728.77.

The payment should have been made by August 29, 2019 but Ultimate defaulted in making necessary payments. In December 2018, Ultimate and Sahara entered into a settlement agreement in which Ultimate confirmed that the value of gas oil that had been delivered was $10,760,728.77, and agreed to make a series of monthly payments for it. Court records showed that some payments were made, in consequence of which some 8,566.469 metric tonnes of gas oil was released to Ultimate. Ultimate, however, reneged in performing the terms of the settlement agreement in full by making all the payments due. After various warnings, on May 10, 2019, Sahara terminated the settlement agreement, notifying Ultimate that its agent, Asharami Synergy Plc. would take delivery of part of the remaining gas oil from the terminal.

Various attempts made by Sahara, according to the court papers, to obtain delivery of the gas oil were futile, leading to the lawsuit which was filed both in Lagos and in the United Kingdom. Justice Butcher, who delivered the third order following a contempt of court judgement, said: “The basis of he sentence was that Mr. Bashir had committed continuing breaches of the order of Mr. Justice Robin Knowles of 1 August 2019 and of the order of Mr. Justice Bryan of 6 September 2019.” There was also a binding indication that the sentence could be reduced to six months if Bashir complies with the relevant order which had previously been breached. He was also fined £500,000 while Adebowale Aderemi, its manager, was fined £10,000.

  • Mosque shooter bags 21 years jail sentence

Mosque shooter bags 21 years jail sentence

A far-right Norwegian man was on Thursday jailed for 21 years for the racially motivated murder of his Chinese-born stepsister and attempting to kill worshippers in a mosque shooting spree.

Philip Manshaus expressed strong anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim views before 2019 attack and was unrepentant at trial.

Manshaus, now 22 years old, shot and killed Johanne Zhangjia Ihle-Hansen in their family home, later explaining he believed the adopted daughter of his father’s spouse posed a risk to the family because of her Asian origin.

He then drove to the nearby al-Noor Islamic Centre and entered the building, firing several shots but hitting no one before being overpowered by a 65-year-old member of the congregation who wrestled away his guns.

“He went in with the purpose of killing as many Muslims as possible,” judge Annika Lindstroem said.

Manshaus expressed admiration for the massacre of over 50 people at two New Zealand mosques in 2019 by a white supremacist who filmed and broadcast the killings live.

The attack also drew comparisons with the massacre of 77 people by far-right mass killer Anders Behring Breivik in 2011 in Norway’s worst peacetime atrocity.

Manshaus wore a helmet camera, filming the mosque shooting, however failed in his attempt to broadcast the attack online.

  • Football fan jailed 90 months for attempted murder

A Universitatea Cluj fan was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for trying to kill a police officer during a Romanian first division relegation playoff match last year.

Vidrean Ovidiu Traian was found guilty of attempted murder after he hit the policeman over the head with a seat during the game in June against AFC Hermannstadt at the Cluj Arena.

The attack had left him unconscious and covered in blood.

The incident took place amid clashes between Universitatea supporters and police with fans throwing seats, stones and other objects at the officers.

A large number of home supporters made their way down to the bottom of a stand.

It was to express their fury at what they described as police brutality following a pitch invasion by a Universitatea fan.

Traian was also ordered to pay 18,000 euros (15,794 pounds) in damages, the Cluj court said in a statement.

The ruling is not final and can be appealed.

  • Sell fertilizers above N5,000, go to jail – FG warns sellers

The federal government has warned those selling fertilizers above the N5,000 approved price to desist from such or risk going to jail if arrested by security operatives.

Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Fertilizer Initiative, Mr Muhammad Badaru, who is also the Governor of Jigawa State, made this disclosure while briefing newsmen on Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI) efforts to make fertilizer available and affordable to farmers.

The federal government had reviewed and reduced the cost of bag of fertilizer from N5,500 to N5,000 to support farmers and cushion the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on agriculture, in line with ensuring food security.

In April, the market price for the sale of PFI NPK 20.10.10 fertilizer to farmers and other end-users was reduced from N5,500 to N5,000 per 50kg bag,

However, the chairman said the federal government has learned of attempts by some individuals to sabotage government’s efforts to make fertilizer available and affordable to Nigerian farmers.

“We learned that some individuals are selling fertilizer at N5,500 per bag which is above the government approved price.

“We have whistleblower numbers on each bag of the fertilizer, therefore, farmers can directly call and report anybody selling the fertilizer above N5,000,” Mr Badaru said.
