  • Ihiala LGA Leaders Congratulate Obiano on Anambra’s Examination Performance

The leaders and people of Ihiala Local Government Area have congratulated Governor Willie Obiano on the outstanding performance of Anambra indigenes in the latest Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

According to the figures published by JAMB, Anambra State indigenes won both the first and second overall results in the 2020 JAMB examination for admission into Nigerian higher institutions.

The best performance was posted by Miss Agnes Maduafokwa who scored 365 out of a maximum of 400 marks while the second best result was by David Nwobi who scored 363 marks.

In a statement issued in Ihiala today the “leaders and people of Ihiala Local Government Area are pleased to announce that Miss Maduafokwa is our dear daughter who has made the whole state proud by her prodigious achievement”.

The statement was signed by Barrister Chidi Udemmadu, the member representing Ihiala 1 in the Anambra State House of Assembly; Igwe Emmnuel Nnabuife, chairman of both the Ihiala Local Government Area Traditional Rulers Council and of the Anambra South Senatorial Traditional Rulers Council; and Chief Okey Chukwu, President General of the Ihiala Progress Union (IPU).

“The exceedingly impressive performance of our daughter is consistent in the brilliant account of Anambra people in all academic endeavours”, declared the people, citing the golden prize won by students of Regina Pacis Model Secondary School in Onitsha which two years ago in California, United States, in the global competition in the use of the Internet to solve social problems.

The Regina Pacis students won the first prize with their development of an application to detect fake drugs, a global scourge.

“In the same vein, we recall that St John’s Technical Secondary School at Alor clinched the third prize in the World Festival of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) held in Tunis, Tunisia, between February 21 and 27, last year.

“We also note with pride how schools and teachers in Anambra State last October won four out of the 24 prizes during the World Teachers Day marked in Abuja, becoming the only state in the whole country to win more than one prize.

“Anambra State also went home with two of the four vehicles donated by President Muhammadu Buhari for their academic excellence.

“We remember with pride and gratitude that Governor Obiano sponsored another proud daughter of Ihiala Local Government Area, Miss Tochukwu Anyigbo, to participate in the World Robotics Competition in Mexico in 2018, and her group won the third prize”.

The Ihiala people urged Gov Obiano to award a scholarship to Miss Agnes Maduafokwa for “her excellent result in the examination organized by JAMB, in line with the governor’s most commendable gestures of rewarding Anambra indigenes who bring glory to the state through academic brilliance”.

For public polytechnic, 120 UTME score was approved, while 100 was approved for Colleges of Education, innovative enterprises and institutes.

  • Candidates can print result notification now – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), says candidates who participated in the just concluded 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can now print their result notification slips.

JAMB disclosed this in its weekly bulletin on Monday in Abuja, meaning the results which had earlier been made available to candidates can now be printed free from the board’s website: www.jamb.gov.ng.

“All a candidate needs to do after visiting the site is to click on QUICK LINKS, then on `E-Facility’ where the candidate would be required to provide his or her registration details and the result notification slip would be displayed for printing.

“The printing of the result notification slip is free as it is different from the original result slip that comes with the candidate’s picture.

“Candidates can print their result notification slip anywhere in the country even from the comfort of their homes once there is internet access.’’

According to the examination body, it has, until now, restricted the printing of result notification slips.

It was made available to candidates only through SMS to avoid anxiety on the part of candidates as well as prevent clustering at cybercafés with the attendant risk of COVID-19 contagion all in a bid to print result notifications.

“This new development, however, is predicated on the gradual easing of the lockdown and resumption of economic activities in most parts of the country.

“The board wishes to advise candidates to be wary of fraudulent elements masquerading as JAMB agents stating that it has not mandated any person or group to do the printing on behalf of the board.

“Candidates are to note also that delegating this responsibility to third parties could result in wilful manipulation of their results.

“Recalls that last year some candidates who abused this privilege by attempting to manipulate their scores were caught and are currently saving various jail terms,’’ JAMB said.

The board further advised candidates to note that any attempt to forge the slip would attract stiff sanctions.

It added that the decentralisation of printing of result notification slips was done mainly to comply with the directives of the NCDC and other relevant agencies on social distancing.

“It is against this background that the board is urging candidates to note that it is incumbent on them to adhere to other precautionary health measures such as wearing of face masks, washing of hands, among others, in order to mitigate the spread of the virus,’’ JAMB added.

  • 2020 Admissions: JAMB fixes June 16 for policy meeting

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has scheduled the 2020 Policy Meeting of tertiary institutions for June 16, 2020.

The exam body disclosed this in its weekly bulletin made to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

According to JAMB, the policy meeting is to be chaired by the Minister of Education with all Heads of Tertiary Institutions in attendance.

JAMB added that the 2020 policy meeting is peculiar as it will go down history as the first that will hold online owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It would be recalled that part of the protocols put in place by government to curb the spread of COVID-19 requires that no gathering of persons exceeds prescribed number.

“Compliance with this directive has become imperative as no fewer than 4000 Heads of Tertiary Institutions comprising Degree, Diploma, NCE and NID-awarding institutions and other stakeholders would normally be expected to congregate at a location but because of extant protocols, would now be expected to participate in the virtual meeting.

“The modalities for the meeting would entail the board issuing only one access code to each participating institution to join the meeting. This access code is not to be shared or given to unauthorised persons.

“However, other critical stakeholders within the institutions like the Registrars, Admissions Officers can cluster around a big screen in a location to attend the meeting using the unique access code,” the exam body said.

JAMB further noted that the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, would preside over the meeting with other stakeholders and top functionaries in the ministry joining in from their operational points.

It added that heads of regulatory agencies and other critical stakeholders like chairmen of committees on Education at the lower and upper chambers of the National Assembly were also expected to join the meeting.

“The meeting will discuss critical issues bordering on the advances made in the educational sector in the last one year in addition to setting the tone for the 2020/2021 Admission exercise.

“The meeting will also chart policy directions for the nation’s tertiary institutions, set admission guidelines and make a holistic review of application statistics, performance as well as evaluate the 2019 admissions exercise.

“The meeting, in addition to other deliberations, would take a stand on concessional and acceptable minimum admissions standards to be applied in all admissions to be undertaken by all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

“The meeting would be streamed live on the Board’s website; www.jamb.gov.ng, its face book, JAMBulletin and other social media platforms,” the exam body said.

  • JAMB remits N3.5bn to FG

    JAMB remits N3.5bn to FG

The joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has made an interim remittance of N3.5 billion to the Federal Government consolidated revenue account.

A statement by Dr Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Head of Media in Abuja, explained that the remittance was in line with Prof. Ishaq Oloyede’s avowed commitment to remit wholly, excess funds generated from its operations to the Federal Government.

According to JAMB, a payment of over N3.5 billion had already been made to candidates by way of reduction of N1,500 from the cost of each ePIN sold to each candidate as directed by Presiden Muhammadu Buhari.

“This brings the total remittances this year to over N7 billion with the assurance to remit more as soon as its operations are concluded and proper audit of its books done.

“From the outset, it had been the intention of the present leadership of the Board to return to federal coffers, whatever is left unutilised from its operational imperatives.

“The immediate benefit of the move manifested in the reduction by President Buhari of the UTME Registration fee payable by candidates from N5000 to N3,500 which entails the transfer of over N3 billion to candidates and guardians annually via the reduction in the cost of application documents,” he said.

Benjamin added that before the reduction in the cost of application EPINs, the Board had remitted over N7 billion in 2017 and replicated same in subsequent years.

He said that this could be attributed to the gracious action by the Buhari administration’s unprecedented decision to give back to candidates a percentage of the cost of registration.

“To sustain the gesture, the Board will continue to come up with innovations on ways to ensure that candidates are provided with world-class services at modest cost as obtained anywhere in the world,” he said.

  • JAMB releases 2019 provisional admission list of successful candidates

JAMB releases 2019 provisional admission list of successful candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has published the 2019 provisional matriculation list of admitted candidates on the official website of the board.

The board disclosed this in its weekly bulletin made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

The board also advised candidates who were yet to accept their offers of admission on the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) to do so or risk forfeiting the admission.

According to the board, the list of fully-admitted candidates in all the tertiary institutions in the country is hereby published on the JAMB Website.

“For ease of checking, candidates can visit: www.jamb.org.gov., proceed to menu titled ‘STUDENTS+’, select the submenu ‘CHECK MATRICULATION LIST 2019’ option and search for their names by entering their 10-digit JAMB Registration Number.

“There is a large number of candidates who have been offered Provisional Admission but are yet to accept the admission.

“A list containing their names is also on display on the board’s website and such candidates are to immediately accept such offers by using the CAPS Mobile App downloaded from the Google Play Store.

“With the App successfully installed and accessed on their devices, candidates do not need to visit any CBT centre or cybercafe as doing so would be a violation of the work-from-home/stay-at home order in place in most parts of the country.”

JAMB, however, said that candidates should note that failure to accept such offers of admission on the CAPS platform would result in the forfeiture of such admissions.

“Candidates are also to note that acceptance of admission on any website other than CAPS is not a valid acceptance as any admission not processed and accepted through CAPS is not known to JAMB.

“Alternatively, affected candidates who are not sure of their 2019 admission status can check for such from their phones by sending “STATUS 2019” to 55019.

“However, in the event of any challenges, candidates are to lodge their complaints immediately by using the online ticketing platform at support.jamb.gov.ng under “2019 Admission List Issue.

“Candidates are to note that only those who had accepted their offers of admissions on CAPS and whose names appear on the Provisional Matriculation List are recognised as bona fide students of the various institutions.

“By implication, if a candidate’s name is not on this published list which will be sent to all tertiary institutions, NYSC and other stakeholders, his/her application for mobilisation in the NYSC scheme, employment, among others, would be declined,” the board said.

We have not set cut-off mark for 2020 admission – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has said the cut-off marks for this year’s admission has not been fixed yet.

It urged Nigerians, particularly candidates, to disregard any cut-off marks being circulated by “fraudsters,” describing it as “fake.”

The board said this year’s cut – off marks would be decided at a stakeholders policy meeting that would be chaired by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.

JAMB’s Head of Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said this in a statement on Sunday amid reports that the board had adopted a cut-off mark for this year’s admission.

The spokesperson said the board has fixed the policy meeting for June 15th and 16th 2020.

He said: “Kindly disregard any cut off marks paraded by fraudsters. It is fake news.

“Cut off marks are decided at a policy meeting chaired by the Hon Minister of Education with all heads of tertiary institutions, CEOs of regulatory agencies in education and all other critical stakeholders in attendance.

“This meeting has been fixed for June 15th and 16th 2020 if all things being equal.

“Until this meeting is held nobody can talk about cut off mark. Nigerians are advised to disregard any such marks being paraded.”

Meanwhile, the board has de-listed nine computer-based test centres (CBT) used in the conduct of the year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

One of the CBT centres was de-listed for conniving with candidates to engage in malpractice during the conduct of the UTME.

The remaining eight CBT centres were de-listed for “technical deficiency” during the conduct of the examination which held on March 14 this year.

  • JAMB results of another 450,000 candidates out

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released another JAMB results of about 450, 000 candidates who sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on Tuesday.

Head of Media and Information Dr. Fabian Benjamin disclosed this yesterday in a statement.

He urged candidates who sat for the examination on Tuesday to check their results by sending ‘RESULT’ to 55019 and not on the board’s website.

Benjamin said the board has not cancelled the jamb results of its examination conducted last Saturday as being speculated on the social media.

He said that the results of the first day of the examination were placed on its website, adding that some fraudulent individuals were copying and manipulating them to deceive unsuspecting candidates.

The JAMB spokesperson said this made the board to move the results to the mobile platform for candidates to use “their unique phone numbers used in registering for the examination to access their results.”

He urged the candidates to disregard rumours making the rounds that the results have been cancelled.

The statement reads: “The result of the over 450,000 candidates who sat for the exam on Tuesday will also be released before noon today. (Wednesday).

“To check their results, candidates are to send ‘RESULT’ to 55019 and not on the board’s website.

“We urge the public to always cross check information provided on the social media.

“Results of the examination will continue to be released as examinations are taken. In a few days from now, we will be concluding the 2020 exercise and we urge all candidates to be vigilant, as fraudsters, who couldn’t operate successfully, given the security measures put in place to secure our system, would want to use every opportunity of information gap to defraud or mislead unsuspecting candidates.”

Acting Registrar of the National Examination Council (NECO) Dr. Abubakar Gana has petitioned commissioners of Education in the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory to notify them of the alleged extortion of students for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) by schools in their domain.

He alleged that some schools were charging above the Federal Government-approved fee of N9,850 as registration fee for the 2020 SSCE.

Gana, who noted that this was against the directive of the government, vowed to sanction any school found guilty.

He spoke when he received members of the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Services at the Abuja office of the council.

The members, led by their Chairman, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, were on an oversight visit to the examination body.

The registrar said: “Not quite a month, we wrote to the commissioners of education, highlighting that some schools, both public and private, are overcharging candidates. While the NECO fee is N9,850, some are even charging N20,000 in the name of administrative charges.

“Most of these schools are ‘miracle centres’ and what they do there is that they perpetrate malpractices. Candidates who are lazy and don’t have confidence can go to the extent of paying N50,000 to register so they can have their way.

“We are on it. You too have a very critical role to play. We will make sure that in all our activities, we will make you part of the monitoring team so you can see what is happening and at your own convenience, write a report to us.”

He said the council would engage members of the committee to monitor its examination and urged them to report any infraction that would guide the council on appropriate actions to be taken.

Gana appealed to the members of the National Assembly for a review of NECO’s budget, lamenting that the examination body had not embarked on any capital project for the past three years.

Ihonvbere said the Senate and the House of Representatives would approve a review of NECO’s budget to enable it execute its mandate.

He noted that the committee had a lot of confidence in NECO and those managing it.

“We believe that the role you have played, the only way to better appreciate it is to imagine a Nigeria without NECO,” Ihonvbere said.
